Title: Going to Japan
Post by: toshi on September 28, 2004, 04:52:59 am
Hi,

I'm going to Japan later this week and I have a couple of questions.  I currently have a 5500, Sharp rom.

1) Can I buy a 760/860 from Japan and use it in America(Hawaii)?  Do I have to load another rom like OZ.  I've never tried that yet on my 5500.

if 1) is true, which I think it is

2) Can I use my 5500 apps on the 760/860?  I've bought some from the Kompany and I assume I would have to get other ones since they seem to have a different pick.  Are all apps like this?

3) I'm going to be staying at Ikebukuro, but I 'll go any place in Tokyo to get one.  In another post some people were saying that 7xx were going for $350 and the 860 is going for $700.  From what I read, the major difference between the 760 and the 860 is the ram, but what about the 750.   Does anybody know where the $350 760's are sold?

4)  Do all versions (750/760/860) have a usb host?

Thats it. Thanks.

Aloha
Rich

You can use the stock ROM easily enough with an english conversion (eg on this page http://www.wbcd.org/zaurus/guide_teil7.html) (http://www.wbcd.org/zaurus/guide_teil7.html)).

I got my 860 at sofmap in akihabara for about 55,000Y, several months ago.

You should be able to find one for 50,000, but you may have to poke around looking for the cheaper shops:

Only the 6000 has built-in usb host capabilities, but the clamshells will work with a cf usb host card like the one sold by ratoc- as long as they have the drivers

You can convert most of the stock software to english without reflashing.

This depends on the app. Much of the Kompany's stuff has C7x0 specific versions, but most apps should work fine.

The only major difference between a 760 and an 860 is the software ( the 860 has some different software) and the color scheme. Other than that they are identical. The difference with the 750 is the ammount of flash ( storage space) and the size of the battery that is in the box

None of these devices have usb host support

Well I got it.  Fantastic machine.  I bought a new one for 58,000 Y.  Sofmap had them for 43,800Y.  They were actually a little hard to find new.  Now I know why.

Anyway, a couple of questions.  I tried the english conversion of the regular rom, but I decided eventually on the Cacko.

I have a Lexar 512M SD card and I'm having a problem that it thinks the card is locked.   I am unable to write to it.  I've reformatted it as ext2 and msdos.  I tried fdisking it.  Nothing seems to work.  Any ideas?  Yes I checked to make sure its not lock.

Question #2 is syncing with the Qtopia desktop.  I previously had the 5500, so I'm trying to sync against that Desktop software.  When I try, it claims it wants a different version of the software to sync.  I've read some messages in these forums that lead me to believe I can sync my 860 against the 5500 Qtopia desktop software.  Is this true?  If not, which Qtopia desktop software do I need?

Thanks

Posting to myself.

Well, I solved the write permission problem.  The /usr/mnt.rom/card permissions were drwxr-xr-x.  I just gave all write permissions and now I can write to the disk.

Thanks.  Still don't know about the Qtopia desktop problem.
