Title: 6000L for $399 -- Amazon.com
Post by: akpoff on September 30, 2004, 04:04:12 pm
Amazon.com have dropped the price (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001W17H2/ref=pd_pym_ka/104-6208390-3735168) on the 6000L to $399!  It's a great time to buy or upgrade!

Also, I bought the 6000 earlier this month at the higher price.  I called Amazon after I saw the sale price and they cheerfully refunded me the difference.  Way to go Amazon!

Wow -- they're all gone.  I went over to the Amazon website to get a picture of the Zaurus for my blog and found them listed but with a message that they're out of stock and discontinued.  Good job ZUG.  We cleaned them out!     Now if only they'd drop the price on the expansion adaptor.

On a related note, previously I had sent an email to Randy over at japan-direct.com asking whether they could ship the 6000W to the US.  He got back to me today.  They'll ship the 6000W to the US for US$1041.  Too rich for my blood but perhaps Amazon.jp will have a huge sale there as well.

What is this thing (obviously I don't own a 6000, though it would have been nice at $399.

What does this do? (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001WJ2AG/ref=pd_sbs_e_1/103-6847838-0957440?v=glance&s=electronics)

It's an expansion sleave.  It has an extra CF slot and another battery.  The 6000 has grooves running the full length of the Z along the bottom.  There's also a special expansion sleave connector just above the normal Zaurus serial/sync plug on the bottom.  I don't have the expansion sleave but it looks like you remove the cover over the second connector, slide the sleave on and enjoy.

The extra CF slot sounds sweet.  Not having the model with built-in bluetooth I could envision the odd need to have two CF slots.  One for a CF memory card the other to have a bluetooth CF card.  Of course on long trips a built-in second batter could be sweet to have as well.  One thing I've noticed is that on thhe 6000 if you type 'ls /usr/mnt.rom' there are two directories there for the cf slots: cf1 and cf2.

Someone here on the ZUG pointed out it would have been extra cool if the expansion slot accepted a PC Card rather than another CF.  I can see the point but would find having another CF just about as good.  The only benefit I could see for myself would be if a PC Card USB 2.0 or Firewire card would work in that slot.  Of course there are options around even that problem (http://www.semsons.com/comflastopcc.html).

Know someone in the USA, tell Amazon to ship the 6000 to him then ask him to send it to you  That's how I'll do (if I can get in touch whith the friend of a friend who live in the US before the 600 are all sold so please let one available for me  )

Yes, it's back and I just ordered one...

Can't believe they are really doing this. Sharp must have dumped on Amazon all the inventory they had set apart for the "corporate market"

It's an unbeatable deal. The closest (VERY figuratively speaking...) thing available on the market is the new iPAQ hx4700 with VGA screen, at the tune of $650 and it doesn't even have a keyboard.

I'm sure it comes with all the Microsoft bugs for free, though....

Amazon just raised thier price and now thow in a $5 SD card  !!!

SD is so cheap now that it isn't worth buying anything less than a 512MB

I would think better deals will come from Ebay in the near future as those who got them for the lower price, decide to sell them (although I am sure most will keep thiers, there is always buyers regret....or we can hope !)

Yeah, don't you just love it when places raise their prices so they can include "free" bonuses?

Got in yesterday, just in time.  Although it's still a good deal at $450.  And when the free SD promotion ends after 10/31, maybe they will lower it again (if they still have stock).

Geminiabode,

look at the estimated shipping date on your order page on Amazon. I ordered mine on Oct 14th and they gave me an estimated shipping date on October 20th............
When October 16th came and of course no shipping, I just couldn't resist. I changed from free shipping to regular shipping (only $4.99) and they shipped it on the 17th with an estimated delivery between October 21st and October 23rd.

If you are going to lose your sleep over this, I suggest you spend those five bucks!!!!!!

FYI, I just called Amazon Customer Service.  Explained that I had placed an order and that a free SD offer had appeared the next day.  After a couple of minutes confirming the status, the representative added the SD card to my order for free.

So the deal gets even better (if you ordered before the 18th )!  Of course YMMV on whether all CS reps will be so accommodating.

Ordered it Sunday, here Wednesday...even though it was only a few days, the wait was torture.

But not quite as torturous as waiting for it to charge. I had to turn it on to make sure there were no dead pixels, though. Such a beautiful screen! I was scared to death when I saw a few specs, but they blew away easily.

I can't wait to throw a screen protector on it and to start using it.

OK I just ordered one.  Thanks for telling me about this guys.    I can't really afford it right now, but I have the feeling that when these are gone there won't be any more.  (After all, Sharp is discontinuing Zaurus sales here in the US.)  I hate paying an extra $50, but its a lot cheaper than it was a couple of months ago.  I guess I'll sell the crumby "free" 128MB SD card for $15 and get something back anyway.

Now that I've spent the money, I'm wondering what are some good apps for it.  Any suggestions?  Is there going to be an OZ for the 6000 anytime soon?

Ummm, please stop.  You guys are making me want one, and I hardly use my C860 enough to justify ownership!!!  Heh heh.  I will resist on this one.

But really, there isn't all that much software for the 6000, is there?  Even less than the C7xx models, right?

With the SL-6000, the choices are currently pretty limited.  Unless you are going to build your own ROM from source, you can choose from:I would expect within the next few months (especially if the price cuts on the SL-6000 bring more developers on board) that the OZ-based images will really shake out nicely.  The plan is for tosa support to be in 3.5.2.

So if you want to machine to use rather than play with, I'd stick to the stock ROM right now.  If you want a usable system but want bleeding edge and don't mind some serious problems, consider Opie OZ.

the software index or zug should have a few choices for a console apps.  qconsole is the first one that pops to mind.  You can just download and install.

The CD contains a terminal program.  You need to get it onto the zaurus somehow and then install it with the add/remove programs thing.

I must say, I feel like a dumbass reading this thread.  I ordered my 6000L like a day before this thread started, and paid the only price I could find, $729.  I've now placed an order with amazon and have an RMA issues for the one I've had about a week.  $499 is a pretty significant savings.

I ordered from Amazon and did get the credit.  I originally paid $679 on September 2nd.  About 10 days later they dropped it to $629 and issued me a $50 credit at my request.  When I started the thread at the end of September Amazon had just dropped the price to $399 and again issued me a credit for the difference.  As before did have to call in to ask for the credit -- no automatic refunds (now that would be sweet but probably too much to ask).

Sorry for the wrong assumption.  You stated it cost you $729 which is above list (and higher than Amazon has ever charged) so I assumed it must have come from elsewhere.  But $679 makes more sense.
