Title: Artists Wanted
Post by: dz on October 02, 2004, 10:16:16 am
Hey Guys

For those that aren't aware, I'm creating a brand new Zaurus Software Index for the community.  If you haven't already, the link to the board where it's been talked and discussed is here: https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...p?showforum=114 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showforum=114)

Anyways, the reason I am posting is that I am requesting you graphic designers and artists out there to come up with a layout

Here is the current one I'm using: http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/ (http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/)

It's one that I just put together quick and it works for now.  Anyways, I know there are some talended people out there, so I'm requesting that some of you try and come up with some concept layouts for the ZSI2.

Here are the requirements:

- Must be able to fit in 640x480 for those of us using clamshell and also be able to stretch as far out as needed.
- Must come up with a variant that is made for 320x240/240x320, for the non-clamshell Zaurus owners.  Try to keep it the same style/colors.
- Must have enough space for a banner on the top so org has the option to try and recoup some costs from this.  I believe the min size is 468x60, but I'm not positive.
- In the layout that I created, if you look at 'my.jpg' you will see little 'Z2' icons on the side of 'Personal Information' and 'My Projects'.  I need you to create a button like that will a rollover state.

You will get full credit for the layout design, but by submitting a layout, you must agree to let us fully use and modify your layout to how we need.

You dont have to create any of the HTML or anything.  Just fire up Photoshop or whatever you guys use and create me a neat looking site.  I'll take care of turning it into a webpage.

I'd like to have the page up and ready for testing within the next 2 weeks, so the more you submit the better.  When it comes close to going live for beta, I will hold a vote to see which layout the community likes most.  As well, you have full permission to use the layout in any kind of portfolio that you may have of graphic work.

Any questions, feel free to message me on here or just ask in this post.

Thanks Guys  ~

Roy

So, I figured I'd start this off with some layouts I've thrown together of my own:

http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/contest/layout1.jpg (http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/contest/layout1.jpg)
http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/contest/layout2.jpg (http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/contest/layout2.jpg)
http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/contest/layout3.jpg (http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/contest/layout3.jpg)
http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/contest/layout4.jpg (http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/contest/layout4.jpg)

I'm going to try and make as many as possible, but obviously I can't win this contest so you guys gotta outdo me

A *very* simple design I created... (Hey, I'm better at coding and compiling than art...)

630 across the larger one (so it's sure to fit on the C-series screens with ease), and 230 across the small one (again, to fit on the 5500/5600 with ease).

I definitely do not expect to win. But hey, might as well give it a go, huh? Might add another one or two sometime later.

Very nice, however, on the final version I would suggest that you chop up the image.
The middle part of the image is essentially the same thing so could be chopped up a small tile which could be repeated on the page, this may bring the image size down from the current ~50K to probably around 10K (or even smaller). Much faster loading for the guys browsing on GPRS.

HTML would then have multiple references to the single tile image to construct the wide banner.

Does this make sense ?

For the 320x240 version, I've decided that you only need to compensate for a 'Browse Software' link at the top and a 'Full Menu' link.  That way the user isn't listed with a huge list of menus, but if they want it all they have to do is click 'Full Menu' and it's shown.

Just thought I'd let you know

Uhh, all these designs look really nice, but I'm not sure making the ZSI2 that image intensive is such a good idea. A simple text page, with maybe one or two images at the top is all I'd need for visual excitement.

It just makes it faster to load, and fast loading is a major bonus on any Zaurus...
Title: Artists Wanted

I know it might look fancy, but there is very little to my design. I chopped it up real quick just to see and the total bytes come to just 9.49KB that will take around 5 seconds to download using a 28.8kbps connection. And just now I realized I forgot to optimize the images first. I'm sure I could reduce that total to about 7KB. Also i could create a flat design, which can be toggled on or off, so on your desktop it can look pretty and on ur Zaurus it can be lightning quick.

Here are the quick chopped files:
[img]http://hexinteractive.net/zsi/parts/bar.gif\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /] [img]http://hexinteractive.net/zsi/parts/drop.gif\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /] [img]http://hexinteractive.net/zsi/parts/fox.gif\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /] [img]http://hexinteractive.net/zsi/parts/gem.gif\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /] [img]http://hexinteractive.net/zsi/parts/grad2.gif\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /] [img]http://hexinteractive.net/zsi/parts/logo.gif\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /] [img]http://hexinteractive.net/zsi/parts/peng.gif\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /] [img]http://hexinteractive.net/zsi/parts/tab.gif\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /] [img]http://hexinteractive.net/zsi/parts/tab_l.gif\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /] [img]http://hexinteractive.net/zsi/parts/title_bar.gif\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

Is that small enough for ya?

keep the comments coming

What do you think of this? I created a logo for ZSI2 as well.
The text in the bars are supposed to be just plain old css'ed fonts, the gradients can be chopped up into tiny file sizes, and the button bars are also fairly easily chopped up.

New logo is very cute. I like it.

offroadgeek & yasen: thanks!

yasen: There's no real "reason" I used the blue gradient... I was just going for a very simple design with as few colours as possible (to keep it clean). The colour gradients can be modified to pretty much any colours quite easily. In fact, the page could have many colour schemes. I'll generate a few colour alternates for the logo tonight as an example.

http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/piii/ (http://www.dangerz.net/dz/zsi2/piii/)

A new layout I'm testing.  As well, there are some screenshots there of parts of the ZSI2.  One is the 'enter comment/vote' form.  One is the 'edit license' form.  One is the 'manage categories' part in the admin section.  The final is just a project page.

I was just playing and I wanted a change from programming, so I decided to throw a quick layout together.

Okay, here's an attempt with the my first logo. It's kind of an "ice" theme...

For those that worry, the whole page as one big picture is only ~28kb. Once cut down to chunks, and stuff changed to css etc, it'll be tiny.

I wanted to address some of the new layouts etc, however, you're site seems to be down dz...

Thoughts?

dz & amrein: Thanks for the nice words! I wouldn't worry about graphic sizes, as the palette's easily fit into 7bit colour gifs/pngs (and can be quite small).

Here's a version I made (in about 20 seconds!) with a different colour scheme (for those that don't care for the blues). It's a "gold" theme:

Thoughts? BTW, any suggestions would be great. I do think that my designs are somewhat "standard", but that's only because I didn't want to go too nuts (miniaturizing elaborate designs can be difficult).

it doesn't have a defined end date yet... but it won't be carried on for many more weeks.  basically, once I finalize getting the server environment setup for dz to put up the site, we'll do some testing, get feedback, etc.

so, submit your design soon!

Ok, let me know what you think of these layouts (http://beazco.brinkster.net/zsi2). The first two should fit well on an 800x600 screen but it's flexible enough to shrink to 640 or stretch to whatever. The last one should fit on a 240x320 screen. If these go over well, I can create some specifically for other dimensions. Also, let me know if you'd like to see these in other color schemes.

I've been meaning to post up the 320x240 version of one of my designs... so here it is!
Note, in the picture, the Drop Down list is transparent and truncated - this is just for legibility's sake (so you can see the table beneath. In usage, this would be where all the categories and options could go (depending on login, etc).

If you have any questions, holler!

Just wanted to let you guys know that the contest will end Saturday, November 20th.  That gives about a week to finish up whatever layouts you have.

Afterwards, we will vote until December 18th.  On December 18th, whomever has the most votes shall be declared winner.  In the event of a tie, a fight to the death will occur between each contestant.  Winner of that gets the 5500 (+ life).

Someone indicated to me that my original design at 320x240 was "too busy". Here's an alternate.

Notes:
1) The inner scroll bar is just an idea. If people would rather scroll with the browser scroll window, that's fine too.
2) I made the drop down list opaque and minimized now as it's been demo'ed in my original 320x240 design.
3) I intend the user login/pass option to be a separate page that's accessible from the User options page (along with all the other stuff like categories, etc).

Thoughts?

Here is my second layout this one i based off the markings of a king penguin.  I also have a few logo options, personally i like the logo without any text, I think logos shouldn’t have text unless absolutely necessary. The next image is another option for displaying the categories, it would appear at the top of the page as if it were the first project displayed. The last image is of the PDA version of the site.
