Title: SL-5500 - hardware to buy
Post by: twpd on October 04, 2004, 07:58:00 pm
I'm waiting for my SL-5500 to arrive and I've ordered a D-Link DCF-650W wifi adaptor for the CF slot for hooking up to my network at home.

I was wondering about what options to pursue for internet access away from home. A CF slot modem or a bluetooth card for use with my mobile phone? I guess the former would be better in terms of call costs and it would not be dependent upon a decent network signal.

Does anyone have any recommendations for any particular cards?

I'm intending to use the SD slot for storage but, I might buy an additional CF card for backup etc. Is a high speed as in 40x or 80x  CF card likely to be of any benefit with the Zaurus or would I be best off staying with a cheaper 8x or 12x card?

I am not sure what ROM the Zaurus comes with - but in any case I'll probably flash it to a recent and stable ROM.

TIA.

Nige.

I have a Pretec 56K Pocket PC CompactModem™, which I bought on Ebay for about 10 pounds (That's about USD $18 to our colonial friends). It worked straight out of the box for PPP and sending/receiving faxes (with efax). I find it indispensible when travelling.

I have a Bluetooth card too but I find it more fiddly to get the connection up, so for ease of use I prefer the modem.

Cool. I was looking for a modem as well but, I haven't found one that cheap as yet. New they are silly, used they seem to be fetching £20-£40 on E-Bay.
