Title: step 2: 860 to english, or just flash?
Post by: gen2 on October 06, 2004, 05:16:50 pm
I've got a bunch of kanji everywhere, on the cdrom, on everything, and of course I'm lost.

You guys are freakin geniuses I'll tell you that, cause I'm swimming!

Please help me take first baby steps...Should I waste any time trying to convert this default kanji to english? I'm going to end up flashing anyway, this is going to be a kismet platform...

How are y'all englishers doing this without a scrap of english?

this

is not working for me -- I'm supposed to already have an SD card i guess?

Any pointers for my first few steps much appreciated. 4 years of BSD is doing nothing for me right now...

THANKS!

Just flash a new ROM.

Personally I'd recommend OZ (but I'm biased). You may also want to try pdaXrom or Cacko.

For OZ take a look here: http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.1/c7x0,c8x0/ (http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.1/c7x0,c8x0/)

The 860 is called a Boxer, but for OZ you should use the 760 image (Husky). So rename zImage.bin.forHusky to zImage.bin; rename opie-image.rootfs.img to initrd.bin and copy both and the updater.sh to the cf (or sd/mmc) card. Then follow the standard instructions (as shown in the wiki/HowTos).

The links on this page explain how to convert the Sharp rom: URL=http://downloads.conics.net/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/]Conics help page[/URL]

The easiest way is to save mcconvert to a compact flash or sandisk card, then follow the instructions.  There are nice screen shots to help you work your way through the kanji.    If memory serves (too much Iron Chef!) there's a bad line at the bottom of the script (i.e. mcconvert) but it's non fatal and pretty easy to edit out if it bothers you.

That said, I've switched over to Cacko, the Sharp based version, and it's very nice and not to hard to flash, so long as you follow the instructions in the "from brick to back" post to solve needing three hands to get to the service menu.Conics help page (http://downloads.conics.net/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/)

Since links have been posted, here's my take.

I didn't bother converting. Wasn't worth the time for me. That's me. I went to pdaXrom, then OZ, then Cacko, and that's there I'm at now.

If you have the time and inclination, it'd be a good experience to convert it (once you manage to install the terminal (when I couldn't find one by default, I said the heck with it and flashed)), but I don't know that it's experience you couldn't find elsewhere, if that's something you're interested in.

If you're planning on flashing anyway, I'd say give every rom a try and see what you like. Kismet will run on all of them, so that's isn't exactly a defining factor between them. I love the clean look of Cacko, but I really like the options of having an X server. Decisions, decisions.
