Does anybody know if kismet works with the socket driver

If you mean the Socket CF card (the older one which is a Spectrum 24), not the original driver.  There are patches to add the monitor mode (and a few other things).  That one does work.  These patches were originally by Pavel Roskin, but I think they have been merged into a more recent orinoco driver.
