Title: A few questions about current (RC5) version
Post by: iamasmith on October 08, 2004, 10:37:22 am
It sounds like PDAXROM is getting tantalising close to being what I want to run but I have a few questions....

Does your libSDL stuff actually run under X ? - can I just do a regular build of most SDL stuff (assuming no OpenGL etc.) and will it run ? - Tried PDAXROM 1.0.5 and found that things like ScummVM you had to drop out of X to run. - A bit offputting.

Are the latest versions of KDEPIM/Pi, KoPI, KaPI etc. available for PDAXROM. If so then I could put up with whatever synchronising quirks there may be and run that.

In all seriousness my most useful bit of stuff that my Z runs is QwikiWiki and it sounds like all the Apache bits are ready to go and I would get a much better browser on the Z to work with the Wiki on board - My necessary config though would mean a reasonable number of manual steps to get everything back up and running that I need under PDAX that I have under Cacko. Are there relatively simple update steps between RCs or is it a blow it away and start again approach with each update ?

Regards,

Andy

Oh and do you know if you can suspend/resume without having to start up X ?, like if you are in a hurry to put the Z away.

I know that the power button doesn't work on 1.0.5 when you are just runnning the console.

Cool, I know there were some suspend/resume quirks with various versions. have you tried this with RC5 or is this from 1.0.5 ?

Actually apologies if you are thinking 'Why doesn't this guy just try it'. I've got quite a lot of stuff on my ext3 SD card which is the only thing that I have that's big and fast enough for me to NAND backup onto.

Just want to be sure that I'm not heading into a 4 hour round trip to nothing if I have to tar everything off (or maybe dd it), reformat to FAT, NAND backup, install, try all the things that I want to try and then decide I'm into my rollback position.

All responses greatly appreciated.

Thanks again Alan,

Anyone got any ideas on the SDL stuff ?

+ Anyone know if a 512Mb SD card is enough to do any reasonable porting stuff with the onboard dev kit ? (sick of apps that take a LOT of hacking to cross compile)

I'm itching to have a go at getting ClanLib working with SDL and seeing if we can finally get Pingus working. - sorry but Gnus just doesn't hack it graphically.

Is that icon set and matchbox theme standard ?

(can't believe I'm getting worked up about eye candy)

All those icons come standard except for the Doom icon, I found that on the web somewhere.

OK,

Getting to the point of going through my Cacko ROM install and working out what I can do without for a while if the release cycle means losing everything each time I update PDAXROM.

One thing though, is anyone actually running the kdepim stuff ?, does it alarm ? I know there was a seperate applet for Qtopia to make it do this.

I think I've gotta go kdepim, certainly for the address book. Took a look at the standard AB application for Kathrin on my desktop machine... can't believe that they chose one that doesn't have 'Company Name'.

Good luck!

I can't say anything about the PIM elements of pdaxrom, I never use them.

Code: [Select]
apm -s is enough for suspending in shell - if your not running the GUI.

Basically all the current IPKs have been tested and should work (including standard KoPI sync etc.)

We (read Sash) have fixed many "behind the scene" bugs and we are no focused on making it more user friendly and add new features like taskbar, blanker applet, battery low warning and more internal problems also need some more work :-(

But basically I think its ready for normal daily usage and fun :-) But please notice that Apache2 etc. isn't yet ported as far as i know.

Try ssh'ing in - often the xwd crashes when ran locally together with SDL apps - we are looking into it.. Other Xwindows apparently have the same problems..

No such luck, here's what I get through ssh when I'm playing a video in xmms:
Code: [Select]
# xwd -display :0.0 -root -out screenshot.xwd
X Error of failed request:  BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request:  91 (X_QueryColors)
  Value in failed request:  0x157f0
Serial number of failed request:  172
Current serial number in output stream:  172

OK, looking GOOD, so far, got address book and stuff onto it, got bluetooth bits installed... pin gets rejected at the momement on my phone but I've really only 'thrown' things on.

This HAS come a long way since 1.0.5, now, if I can just get the SDK up and running I can rebuild Ruby and all the other stuff that I need.

Thanks for the encouragement guys.

OK, that was an interesting 'try out'.

I think that PDAXROM isn't quite right for me just yet. The main thing for me is that the handheld is running Linux and can run Apache etc. which PDAXROM can but having got that going the display server stuff is kinda incidental, if I have a fast, functional browser and my Apache PHP I can do a lot whichever display server X, Qtopia or whatever.

Things like general loading speed are a bit offputting and I guess some of the RC5 feed hasn't been completed yet but it still seems a little lacking in apps. + the decision to make it ALL IPK based rather than use some cramfs stuff for some of the larger core stuff means the flash fills up alarmngly quick. - Some guidelines on partitioning and recommended targets for install would be good here.

* SUGGESTION * - why not add (possibly in an IPK comment that the installer picks up) a suggested installation target for each package rather than have the users trying to place on root/home/sd etc. ? This would allow core stuff to be kept to a minimum on the distro whilst cards could be used for larger installed apps (Quake etc.)

That all said, I think the ROM looks GREAT and Quake rocks on this build.

I think I will wait for the final live release, wait until the feed stabilises and has all the packages that I need and will give it another try then.

But GREAT work guys, I look forward to taking another look in a while.
