Title: Real format playing possible?

I\'m looking into a way of playing Real streaming on a C860. I haven\'t been able to find a player that would do the trick.

The national broadcasting company here in Denmark makes previous broadcasts available in Real format, so I am looking into a way of playing those streams on the Zaurus.

An alternative could be to play the streams on another system and pipe that player\'s output into a converting tool that would convert the stream into a format that is playable by the applications that are ported to the Zaurus (XMMS, MPlayer and friends).

Is any of this possible?

The RealNetworks codecs have not yet been ported completely to arm/zaurus. Nor is there an easy way to play.

I see. Do you know of any tool that can \"suck\" in the Real stream and convert it to a usable format (through a pipe to another tool, maybe)? I could do this on another system in my LAN and later access the resulting file via FTP or HTTP.

You can use mplayer to dump the stream to disk like this:

mplayer -dumpfile -dumpstream
I haven\'t tried it with real audio but I don\'t see why it wouldn\'t work if you have the codecs. Now whether those codecs will compile for the Zaurus, I don\'t know. Perhaps that\'s what lpotter is referring to. I think you should be able to convert the file mplayer gave you to mp3 with mencoder. Maybe there\'s a way to dump the stream straight to mp3 from mplayer; I\'m not sure -- I don\'t know a whole lot about it -- and I don\'t have the man page handy (and mplayerhq.hu seems to be down). But I hope that\'s some help.

Well,

Work is a Solaris/Linux shop and a zaurus would fit nicely. However, for home use I\'m just looking for something to play all that non stateside commerical music. Much, if not most of what is available seems to favor Realplayer.

Anyone have some feelers out there in regaurds to a timeline?

The solution is Shoutcast.  I have done this before.

You get Winamp and Shoutcast set up on a computer (some components require a Windows computer).

Then you setup Shoutcast to broadcast from the output of your sound card.  Now anything that can be played on your PC can be streamed to your Z as an MP3 internet radio stream.

Also check out Icecast & darkice if you want to do some of the work on a linux box... I\'ve got this setup getting ready for mlb.com radio so I can stream broadcasts to my Z wirelessly.  Mplayer on the Z works great for streams.  It\'s command-line, but I hope to have a quick python/qt wrapper for it soon.

I am using it for the exact same thing!  I got Shoutcast working but I may try Icecast, too (since it gives the option of streaming Ogg Vorbis and I can use my Linux box for my server).  I just have to wait until I get my Linux box out of storage.

I also use it to stream to my home stereo using prismiq media player.
