Title: wireless.opt , network.opts , and LAN tool
Post by: gen2 on October 12, 2004, 01:39:50 pm
Seems as though LAN tool overwrites what's in wireless/network opts files...

How do I set up multiple network profiles, especially for wifi? The gui LAN tool doesn't seem to "work reliably"...I'm having a hard time understanding how it handles multiple accounts.

Can I just tweak a config file instead? Where is the config for LAN tool?

Thanks!

I have been able to successfully use the 'Lan & Wifi' app to manage multiple wifi profiles (home, kismet, travel, etc.).

On the 'Network profiles' tab:

I simply click the 'Create new' button, then it asks for a name.  Then I click the 'Wireless' radio button.

Then I go to the 'TCP/IP & DNS' tab and enter in the details.  I have found that I need to check and then un-check the DHCP box and DNS box in order for the tab to let me enter data (because I run static IPs at home).

Then I go to the 'Wireless' tab and enter in the necessary data there.

When you're done entering in all the necessary info, go back to the 'Network profiles' tab and click save.

To change between profiles, I just launch the 'Lan & Wifi' app and select the appropriate profile name (from the drop down) and click 'OK'.

It's been 100% reliable for me!

Yeah! That kind of thing!

Where is it?

All I have for network setup in the GUI is a system tool called "LAN".
In there are provisions for everything you speak of EXCEPT the "New" button and the "Network Profiles" tab.

There is a dropdown where profiles should go, but something is definitely missing...

Gen: what version of pdaXrom are you running?

Offroadgeek: I will look into the uncheck/check problems..

Hint - once you have setup the profiles you can also use the
Code: [Select]
cardctl scheme PROFILENAME from term to quickly switch between different settings :-) We are working on making that into the wireless applet and making the wireless applet more stable.

thought I was running 1.0.5, but I'm new at this so perhaps not. It seems clear that whatever this is has been fixed in a subsequent version, so thank you for that.

I was digging into that crdctl scheme stuff earlier today and could only get the 1st profile to fire, the 2nd (dhcp style) just hung there. I'm new to the wireless.opts file, so I screwed it up for sure. The redundancy of entries in network.opts and wireless.opts is strange for me. More reading to be done...

many thanks

gen2 - I would definitely recommend re-flashing with the new rc5 rom.  You will enjoy the bug fixes, and the more reliable network app.. it's the best ever!
