Title: SL-5500 vs. SL-B400
Post by: acpkendo on October 15, 2004, 10:12:02 am
The reason I ask is that, because Sharp has discontinued the Zaurus in the U.S. (and we can therefore not reasonably expect any updates to the stock ROM), is it possible to use the ROM's for the B400?  Wouldn't it be simply a matter of changing the default setting in the "Language" section to English?

I'd be very interested in this, not least of the reasons being the Japanese handwriting recognition.

Ashikase, maybe you have some insight on this?

Correction, I guess that's B500. . . no wonder it wasn't Googling. . .

acpkendo:

I think you mean the SL-B500; there was no SL-B400. The SL-B500 is the Japanese version of the SL-5600, not the SL-5500. Therefore, I wouldn't suggest trying any of the B500 roms (specifically kernels) on a 5500.

As for Japanese input, have you tried installing the Japanese support ipk that is floating around? It was built using files taken from the C-series devices, so I have no idea if they'd work or not on a 5500, but it's worth a shot. If you try this, please let me know the result.

I have, and it doesn't.  I did manage to create an ipk using files from the A300, which I believe is equivalent to the SL-5500 in that they both run StrongArm and use the same base Qtopia version (1.5 I suppose?).

More than anything I was hoping for a source of updated ROMs and/or Intellisync for the 5500, since I doubt Sharp USA will release another one.

Thanks for your help. . .

From my understanding the A300 is the 5500, except in a smaller sized device.

That is my understanding too, although I'm a little leery of trying to flash a ROM from it. . .

Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens with OZ, or else get a new job so I can finance a new SL-C3000.
