Title: kphone won't display on Zaurus X-server
Post by: seachicken on October 20, 2004, 10:18:26 am
Have successfully built kphone for RC5.
It runs and worked successfully with the echo server 612@fwd.pulver.com

BUT I was testing it sending the window to another X-server.
When I try to display on the Zaurus X-server, kphone crashes: "Broken pipe".

Any ideas why this might be (the application linked to the X and QT libs)?

sorry - I don't have a solution for you, but I've always wondered, who can you call with this program?  Just other kphone users? Or is there a bridge out into the phone system so you can call anyone?

You hit the nail on the head. PC-PC is not so useful (at least to me), but PC-Phone is.

I've never done this, but there seem to be services that allow you to make and receive calls to and from real telephones. The rates seem competitive with callback services.
It seems a very handy capability to have especially when travelling.

Here is a list I found of providers. None are a recommendation in any way since I have yet to use any service.

Some SIP Service Providers (http://www.xten.com/index.php?menu=ippstn)

Update: kphone is now working on my Zaurus display

I'll sign up for a SIP VoIP service and try to use it to make a real international phone call tomorrow. It looks like I'll be successful, calls to various information lines / echo servers have been working.

kphone rocks on the Zaurus, the windows are nice and small (apart from one configuration dialog box which is manageable).

If it works out I'll put up an ipk on the RC5 unstable (http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/) feed in the next day or so.

One question:

Which version did you compile?

Antoher question - which model of Zaurus do you have? What will you use for a mic / speakers?

I've built the latest version of k-phone (4.04) and I have the 760 model.

I'm in Japan, so I'm going to get a Japanese mobile phone hands free headset today.
These are supposed to work. I've already signed up to www.sipphone.com

I am not sure how easy it will be to get working though. I am able to place a call though to my home phone.. I get a "we're placing your call now" audio message from sipphone, then my home phone rings, I answer it and there's silence (i.e. speaking into the real phone doesn't result in that speech coming out of the zaurus) for 30 seconds or so, then the call disconnects on both ends.

I guess the good news it that it's looking like a configuration problem rather than a problem with the kphone app.

I've made an ipk and uploaded it to the RC5 unstable feed.
I'd be grateful for any feedback.

The 30 seconds pause IS the Kphone app!

But the good news is:
I solveld all the problems running KPhone on the Z!

The result is:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...ckage_id=125452 (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=104103&package_id=125452)

KPhone/Pi 0.9.7

It is based on KPhone 4.0.3 and fixed a lot of ugly bugs in KPhone.

I have contacted the KPhone 4.0.3 developers about my changes, but never got a reply.

KPhone/Pi 0.9.7 should be compileable without problems for pdaXrom.

Please download the sources from the above link and use the
kphone_pi.pro
file for creating Makefiles.
The kphone_piE.pro file is for building KPhone for the Zaurus Sharp/OZ Roms and will not work.

It would be great, if KPhone/Pi would eb available for pdaXrom as well, it is a really cool and useful application.

To the others, who are reading this:
If you are running Zaurus with Sharp/OZ Roms, download the ipk from the above link.
It will work on the Z 5500 as well!
If you have OZ 3.5.1 running, please install KPhone/Pi 0.9.7 from the OZ 3.5.1 feed.
There is a version available compiled with GCC 3.xx.

Hi,

I've built KPhone/Pi 0.9.7, and it seems far better than the kphone 4.04 I built.
Very nice job there.

The kphone I made chopped the first second or so off the audio. I assumed that was the way it was but obviously it was a bug. The fonts and windows are also the right size.

Unfortunately it doesn't make it as far as the 4.04 when making a call to my home phone using the sipphone service. I get an "Connecting your call.." voice but then instead of ringing my phone the "Dial/Disconnect" dialog box vanishes and that's the end of the connection attempt. The output says something like "forced disconnect".

I'll try tomorrow to get it going, it's most likely to be a configuration problem, and I'll pull the 4.04 package from unstable since I realize now it's not working well.

Discovered that Japanese mobile phone headsets although they appear to be just the job are no good. The plug on them is 2.5mm and the Zaurus takes a 3.5mm plug.
I do have an idea or two about what to do. The first one is that it may be possible to use one earphone of a set of headphones as a mic. The second is to use an adapter that connects two mono mics into one 3.5mm stereo jack plug. The third is to solder my own plug onto something.

Anyway, thanks for pointing me to this package.. it seems very promising and hopefully it can be made to work on pdaxrom.

Hi,

I pulled the kphone from the unstable feed because the kphone-pi 0.97 (see above) worked better. However I haven't been able to complete a call to a real phone using the sipphone service. I get all the way to having my home phone ring, answering it  .. then silence and after 30 seconds or so a disconnection.

I am looking into what the problem might be.

I've put up the ipk for kphone-pi on the unstable feed.
I'd be grateful for feedback on what it can and can't do.

I can't get any of the versions I can find to work with the pdaXrom. I get it installed ok but libqpe missing or libXm*** or it won't install as there are some problem with the tar. Can someone please explain a bit more clearly the steps, libraries and locations if they have time.

Done it

I had to manually install the files from the ipk in the unstable feed and it worked.

Attached version 1.0.0 of KPhone for pdaXrom RC11/12
I haven't tried it out myself yet, so you have to see for yourself if it works or not.
It starts ok, that's all I know for now  .
