I just discovered that the USB cable for the Cradle does not fit into the UDB port on the 6000. Bummer we have to pay for another cable (when it becomes available, have not seen one yet.)

I found the needed cable:
http://www.serialio.com/info/zaurus/notes/...SL-6000USB.html (http://www.serialio.com/info/zaurus/notes/SL-6000USB.html)
-
i think he is talking about the MINI A usb Connector on the 6000, you need a Mini A to standard USB cable.
-
I found a Mini-A to Std-B USB cable here...
http://www.vss.com.sg/ (http://www.vss.com.sg/)
I am trying to find out about retailers. If I can obtain it, I will try some of my devices e.g. 120MB USB 2.0 (I know Zaurus is not 2.0) drive.
-
I thought that I posted a message about this before but here it is.You can get \"QuickConnect\" cables from Staples for about $26.00 and they have all the pieces you need for about any configuration. The company rep sent me one before they hit the store and right now they are trying to work out a deal with sharp for a bundle package.
-
Is Staples going to sell the SL-6000 as well or just cables?
-
Just the cable. I was talking about the QuickConnect company rep.
-
Thanks for the information. However, I looked on the Staples web site and didn\'t see anything obvious. Is it possible that it hasn\'t \"hit the store\" yet? Do you have any more information that would help be find it. I searched on QuickConnect and went to Computer Accessories-]Cables...-]USB Cables.... Thanks!
-
The cables are pretty new to Staples About 2 weeks old ,so it might not be on their web site just yet. FYI Staples doesn\'t list alot of their things on the web site and some employees might not know that they have them.
-
I purchased the cable at my local Staples. It was in a display case pretty close to the front of the store.
The good news is that when I plug in my 120 GB External USB 2.0 drive, the Zaurus \"sees\" it as evidenced by dmesg.
The bad news is that I can\'t yet figure out how to get it attached to /dev/sda1 or some such and then mounted to /mnt/usbstorage or some such. I\'ve been doing compares of /etc/hotplug between my Zaurus and my Red Hat Professional system. I\'ll keep trying...
-
I spoke too soon...
I just took my Zaurus out of the dock and plugged in the external drive. dmesg says it saw it and attached it to /dev/sda1. I had modified /etc/fstab to have the line
/dev/sda1 /mnt/usbstorage auto noauto,owner 0 0
cloning from the /dev/mmcda1 line. I did a
mount /dev/sda1
and a
cd /mnt/usbstorage
ls
I am now looking at the directory listing of the files on the drive.
-
Cool isn\'t it. The cable is worth every penny.
-
Does anyone have a external dvd drive to try or a CD writer? What happen\'s when you plug in a USB keyboard? Thanks. Just dumb questions from someone who is still saving for a Z...
-
this the cable? it looks neat.

I\'m still confused by the discussion here
http://www.serialio.com/info/zaurus/notes/...SL-6000USB.html (http://www.serialio.com/info/zaurus/notes/SL-6000USB.html)
regarding the POSSIBLE use of the usb connector on the Z for sync. The article says, of course, that is better to use the ZThinCable BUT implies you could use the other. I would think that if you tried to use the usb connection on the Z for sync that both the Z and the desktop/laptop would try to play \"host\" and nothing would happen.
When I plugged my Z in to my laptop like this, nothing, in fact, happened.
I would appreciate any clarification here. Thanks in advance.

My external USB drive, which I normally have plugged in to my laptop, has its own external power. I can\'t speak for drives which don\'t.

sorry, I didn't notice you were speaking about sl-6000 IN the sl-6000 section... ME-DUMB

Actually, it is theoretically possible to get a USB host card in your CF slot. There\'s a few sold for PocketPCs, so getting it to work on the Z would basically be a driver issue. I don\'t know of anyone who has tried it though...
-
Just bought assorted usb connector kit from Staples today and followed richmitc\'s instruction to make my Zaurus to recognize s USB SD reader (Lexar JumpDrive Trio).
When I was in Staples, I also saw a Delorme Earthmate USB gps for $120. Now that Zaurus can recognize a USB storage device, what are the odds it will have the drive for the gps? I looked under /dev/usb there are only two entries:
canoncam (?!)
host_ohc1 (?)
Now this is not exactly encouraging news to a Linux newbie. Any pointers?
Thanks

After a little websurfing, I found the QuickConnect set for $8-11 (depending on length) at cablesplususa.com. For some reason their advertised price is much less than everywhere else.
-
I know that the zaurus 5500 doesn\'t have a usb connector, but the cradle has it, and from zaurus I can see all usb modules working as needed, is it possible to convert the cradle connector to a usb male connector, so that i can connect any usb device?
-
Will the Quickconnect cable work with the SL5600?
-
The 5500 itself can not be a USB host, you can add a CF USB host card tho.
-
I ordered 3 of those cables from cablesplususa.com. They didn\'t charge for shipping which was odd but they did require a purchase of $10 or more. I wish there was a 3\' GoldX but beggars can\'t be choosers.
-
They didn\'t charge for shipping
They will. If your experience mirrors mine, it won\'t appear on the email invoice or the printed packing slip that comes in the box. The first I knew about the shipping charge was when the credit card bill came. I paid about $7, which seemed a little steep since I ordered just one cable. However, I probably still came out ahead vs searching for it at Staples. I wouldn\'t call it a \"scam,\" just an irritating oversight in their software.
-
Ack... yep, $12 shipping on the 3 cables.
-
I just ordered 2 calbes from cablesplus...the 6\' is still $8.10 and does nto show the shipping but even if it is7-10 dolars that is still bettehr then the 19 I was looking at at other places on the net...
Has any one had problems with thier cables yet or do they work well with teh 6k?
-
Has anyone found a retractable cable with the mini-a connector?
-
There is only one type of Mini-USB receptacle for On-The-Go (OTG) devices. This receptacle accepts both Mini-A and Mini-B connectors. The USB mode of the OTG device is selected by the connector: Mini-A sets the OTG device in host mode, Mini-B sets the OTG device in slave mode.
[img]http://www.semiconductors.philips.com/buses/usb/products/otg/images/roles.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]
(from the Philips Overview of USB On-The-Go (OTG) (http://www.semiconductors.philips.com/buses/usb/products/otg/overview/))
There does appear to be a considerable amount of vendor confusion when it comes to labeling Mini-USB connectors. 5-pin Mini-USB connectors are Mini-A. 4-pin Mini-USB connectors are Mini-B.

-
Oh well...just got the retractable USB cable from Black Box and (altho it says a min-a adapter is included), there is no mini-a capability with this cable.

Hi richmitc,
I did exactly what you did - I have the quickconnect cable, I've connected my usb diskonkey, I've mounted -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb, and I could ls.. But that's not all - I then tried to copy and it got stuck. dmesg showes me:
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
I get no response from the terminal. I can't rmmod (in use), removing and reputtnig the usb key doesn't help. Some of the file gets copied (correctly I think), and then it gets stuck.
Did you have any such problems?
Appreciate any help,
Alon

Hey
I found a USB to mini A cable that works on a SL 6000.
You can plug USB peripherals such as keyboards, mice, externally powered USB hard drives and card readers into the Zaurus.
http://www.dcables.com/catalog/1_8_meter_u...in__3239068.htm (http://www.dcables.com/catalog/1_8_meter_usb_2_0__plug_type_a_to_mini_usb_a_plug__4pin__3239068.htm)
-
Yo-hi.
I've happily got a new Zaurus6000L.
Imported from US to Germany.
(I had to pay $650 + €80(german tax addon))
I'll buy an usb-mini-a adapter this week.
FOR GERMANS:
There exist http://reichelt.de (http://reichelt.de).
There you get an
1.8 meter USB-MINI-A to USB-A cable
for just €0,80 !!!
and male/female/a/b adapters for €0,45 !!!
But minimum payment is €10,-(€100,- outside of germany) and postage €3,60.
So you should buy additional stuff. (i.e. to tinker a mobile battery charger out of big batteries and a tension-regulator-7805)
FOR AMERICANS(and the rest of the world):
I'm sure, in usa exist several cheap shops for electronics, too.
Look for internet shops with linux servers (use telnet/netcat on port 80 to find out).
And ask students tinkering with microcontrollers. (Search for microcontroller-forums.)
Most big companies are really expensive, so do not trust those with heavy propaganda. (i.e. CONRAD)
Prices of electronic components differ from shop to shop between 30% and 20000%. The competence of those shops, too.
You should not sell much more than $1.00 for such usb cables an adapters -- or you've been had by a big MS-like company.

I spent three hours today driving to every electronics story in the greater Seattle area, looking for at least the scent of a Mini-usb A connector, to at least pirate onto the end of one of my other cables. I ended up at Fry's. I don't know if you have a Fry's near you, but they are a huge electronic store (literally, almost a warehouse) that seems to have almost everything... they even have a motherboard display.
I poured through the four sections of the store (cameras, PDA accessories, computer components, and the cable isle) and pulled up nothing. Four different service reps brought me usb-b cables. When I asked at the repair counter if they had any "special" phone numbers for Sharp, they said they couldn't help me with anything that I didn't buy there, or that they carried. so I got pissed off and started pouring over every electronic device they had in the store looking for something that had the same socket as the tosa.
Finally, success... the new iRiver PMP-140 (a 40 gig media player) had two mini usb inputs in a pop-out door on one side, one was a mini-b, and was labeled something like "USB client" and right next to it was a mini-a, that was labeled "USB Host." I assume this would be used for the iRiver to play from external HDD's. I thought it had seemed absurd that Sharp would include hardware that could not be used in it's product due to an unavailable accessory, and surely iRiver couldn't make the same mistake, RIGHT?
I pretended I was interested in buying one, and managed to get the rep to pull a boxed unit out of the back of the store, and among the contents listed on the bottom of the box was "USB host cable adapter."
here I am ten minutes later, feverishly thumbing to you after finding this cable available on the iRiver accessories page. I ordered four.
Here's the link to the iRiver store (https://secure5.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=iriver&BusType=BtoC&Count1=320583522&Count2=237723946)
They're only FIVE BUCKS!!!!
-
Good job dude.
Lexar makes a Multi-Card Reader that is about the same size as a pack of cards, is blue and silver and reads seven kinds of different memory cards (they don't include any better identifyiers like model numbers on these products, darn it). It includes a three foot cable that looks like it has mini-A male to standard-A male ends on it. Someone with a 6K might try to see if this works as well. If I upgrade from my trusty SL 5500 I will update this thread.
Good to hear that Fry's is still satisfying the techlolust of the west coast, I am in NYC now and would like to hear if there is anything comprable in this area.
- Edit 12/2/04 -
I have verified that this cable does not work with an SL 6000L.
-
Great find. I almost bought the QuickConnect "ensemble" from Staples.
I didn't want another long cable and multiple connectors to lug around, so I waited for something better.
The iRiver adapter is much more like it. So I just ordered one. $10 including shipping.
-
I just ordered 126 pieces (to reach the €100)
I will be offering them back at cost here in the forum.
Any one interested contact me.
I think the price will be around $1 or $2 shipped to any U.S. address.

~ May Peace be Upon You ~

UPDATE
Shipping is exorbitant to U.S.A
I had to cancel order

Great find!....
I also found the GoldX QuickConnect at Staples but I returned it.
I found this ... GE H097920 "USB 2.0 6-in-1 Cable Kit - 6 ft." at MicroCenter in Tustin, CA for $20. It contains a mini-A Male to A Female adapter about 2 in. long which works fine though it won't allow the Z in the cradle. The cable kit is white cables / adapters with silver ends.
And then I found this .. GE H097912 "USB 2.0 6-in-1 Cable Kit - 10 ft." at a Goodwill store in Fullerton, CA for $8.00 previously opened with all parts. The cable kit is black cables / adapters with gold ends.
Even though the the mini-A Male to A Female adapters don't fit with the cradle I prefer them to the proprietary ends on the GoldX cable.
I've tried a USB keyboard with embedded hub (still trying to work out the special key mapping) and a USB thumb drive and have others to go. It is _very_ cool to have USB host capabilities.
I'll need to get a couple of those adapters from iRiver too.
Dave

way to go on ordering a few... I don't want to be babying this thing like oh-so-many dongle adapters I have lying around... "oh don't move the laptop it's on the ethernet" etc...

I have a multi-card reader in my desk at work which I believe is a lexar. The plug looks the same but does not fit my SL6000. Its so close that just looking at it you would think it would work. Maybe filing it down would get it to fit but I decided to just go ahead and order a cable for the Z.

I don't have a Lexar but I do have a multi-card reader. It has a mini-B connector. Please don't modify the mini-B connector to fit in the mini-A plug of the Zaurus. They are not electrically compatible. Just like you can't modify an A connector (goes into your PC) into a B connector (the large "house" shaped connector) which goes into devices.
Mini-A is new connector for smaller host devices. Smaller than PC's at least. In the USB world there are host devices and client devices and the cable ends for each are intentionally different. We just have one of the new devices which have the mini-A connector.
Get the mini-A Male to A Female connector from IRiver or the GoldX set or one of the two GE sets I mentioned.

Actually you can modify the mini-b to fit the mini-a because I did it in March when I got my Sl-6000 but be careful in doing so ,also I wrote a thread about the mini-a adapters and different devices to use with the Z so try a search and see what comes up. The Lexar is one of the devices that I plug into my 6k.

firstly, i just want to say great job!
now, i may just be dense, but i've scoured the iriver link in the first post but i can't find the cables you mentioned. do you perhaps have a part number so i can search further for it? i've just spent the last two days trying to figure out how to connect my mp3 player to my 6000L so i was very excited to find this post.
thanks.

I tried to hunt down your earlier postings on modifying mini-B connectors into mini-A connectors but no luck... searched under "coolass" and mini-a or usb. Great stuff but nothing I could find on mini-A.
Any specific pointers?

No you can't sync because both are acting as a usb host and they cancel out both the usb upstream and downstream.

You need a nice nail file a pair of needle nose pliers ,(pointed tip) and a little patience. First place the mini-b to the Zaurus port so that you can see the fit and then slowly start rounding the top corners all the way back for a good fit. The newly rounded corners might need to be slightly pintched together to give it a soft arch on top of the plug but be careful. If it is done correctly it will fit both the Z and the base. I take no responcesiblity for any damages done and I'm just sharing my experience. Use at your own risk.BUT it's not to risky anyway.

Hey
I found a USB to mini A cable that works on a SL 6000.
You can plug USB peripherals such as keyboards, mice, externally powered USB hard drives and card readers into the Zaurus.
http://www.dcables.com/catalog/1_8_meter_u...in__3239068.htm (http://www.dcables.com/catalog/1_8_meter_usb_2_0__plug_type_a_to_mini_usb_a_plug__4pin__3239068.htm)
Do you realize that their page specifically states:
Please note: This cable is not compatible with the Sharp Zaurus SL-6000.
-
I have a CP Technologies 4-in-1 USB Card Reader which has a cable that is normal USB on one end and mini USB on the other. I don't yet know what the whole mini-A vs. mini-B thing is, but I do know that the mini-USB end does not fit my 6k. :(
I really would like to get one of those adapters that's male-female so I can plug a keyboard or whatever straight into it. I didn't see a gender changer in the USB kits and I can't seem to find the iriver one that was mentioned earlier.
-
hm... i was worried about this... i think we've encountered the same issue that scared me off chiefing a mini-b connector to fit... before mini-b became the absolute standard (also before there was anything handheld that could behave as a usb host) mini-a, mini-b, and the mini-four pin connector (looks like a very small full size B) were all competing to become the standard. I have an old mp3 player with the mini four pin, which is already hard to find in stores. I don't think mini a ever made it off the ground as a client, but the cable on that site is for that use. When a mini host plug was needed they just decided to use a shape that was already defined. What you're looking for is a five pin, not a four pin. The i-river cable i linked to in my other post is listed as a mini host cable, and it's just a pigtail that gives you a full size a female to plug your peripherals into... as soon as devices with full WIMP interfaces get too small for the full size usb A, we'll see companies come out with mini-mice and the like with mini-a males. Fujitsu and sony laptops have already gone to the four pin 1394 female, which is the mini version of "firewire" that you see on DV video cameras.
There seemed to be some confusion over the link to the host pigtail in the other post, so I won't post it here, but it's found over on the iriver site under accessories (picture of headphones), then portable media player (picture of a mpeg playing handheld). it's at the bottom of the screen.

Has SL-6000 an OTG host or simply an USB-1.1 host?
-

I just got in my CablesPlus order. I ordered:- GoldX QuickConnect, 5in (GXQU-05)
- GoldX QuickConnect, 6ft (CPCGXQU-06)
I received:- GoldX QuickConnect "Bonus Pack - 2 Cables", 18in and 36in
- GoldX QuickConnect, 10ft
So certainly a good deal (3 cables instead of 2, a more expensive 10' in place of the 6'), but a bit odd. Looking more closely, the packaging for the Bonus Pack is indeed marked GXQU-05, so I'm guessing the "5in" is just an error on their web site.
-

OTG is basically a limited usb host but depending on the peripheral it can also act as a client.

What blows my mind is that the 6000 comes with a great USB to mini-USB cable. It was difficult to convince myself and several other people that this was only for the cradle. Attempts to plug it into the Zaurus itself seemed so reasonable yet futile. Scouring the net, I could find absolutely no source for the correct plug with which to make my own cable. I thought of snipping one off of something else, but couldn't figure out what. The iRiver is a good lead, but their website is remarkable in its badness and I only was only able to find what I believe is the exact same USB cable that came with the 6000.
I love my new Zaurus 6000, but I'm still having severe difficulty finding a way to use my USB Happy Hacking keyboard with it.
The dream is 1. Vim, 2. Less than 1/2 kilo, 3. touchtyping..... I'm 2 for 3 now......
-
I realized that the reason why I had trouble finding the adapter on iRiver.com is that I was looking through their PRODUCTS section. You have to go into their STORE then under portable media and accessories to the bottom of the page.
Mine is in transit.
-
came today, Rio Carbon mounts as 5gig harddisk.
next to see if a mouse will work with GPE...

Mmmm...USB Happy Hacking keyboard. I use a USB sub-keyboard with my Z6K that's about the same size as the HHK. Is it everything you thought it would be? I've almost ordered one. The price is a bit steep but worth it if it delivers the goods. Any comments, critics or complaints?
Thanks!

Received my cable from iRiver today (actually 2 since they were cheap). Very very nice! Worked like a charm with my keyboard. Small enough to stick in my PDA case.
Great find!
-
since i happen to be in korea at present, i was able to find the usb host adapter cable at the iriver product store. i bought 2 host cables at 4000 won each (just under us$4.00 each), and tried connecting my iriver usb mp3 player to my 6000L. everything seems to be working ok -- that is, the 6000 recognizes the mp3 player as a usb based drive, but i can't figure out how to mount the drive.
so in short the cable works like a dream, now i just need to know how to mount the drive so i can read and write to my mp3 player.

Does the mp3 player mount to your PC as usb storage???
- Install the terminal program
- Start the terminal program
- su (go to "root" user)
- mount /dev/sda1 /usr/mnt.rom/usbstorage
then you'll be able to see the stuff on /usr/mnt.rom/usbstorage. It even shows up in the Files tab as "Storage /dev/sda1'.
Don't forget to unmount before disconnecting with
- umount /dev/sda1
I haven't seen an app to simplify this.
Dave
-
you could script it if you do it that often and don't like opening the terminal... but just to pull out some characters, dev/sda1 is in fstab already, so
mount /mnt/usbstorage
or
mount /dev/sda1
do the trick.
-
I also ordered the iRiver USB host cable. It is a tiny little cable, great for carrying around without the bulk of the full-sized cables. So far, I have plugged in:
1. a Compaq USB full sized keyboard, and it worked without any configurations of any sort! Just plugged it in, and opened Hancom Word, and started typing.
2. a Targus numeric keypad. It also worked beautifully without configuration of any kind.
Other USB devices (Gravis GamePad Pro USB, Belkin USB Optical mouse, Logitech USB WebCam) also detect, and possibly will work if drivers and application support are worked on.
-
Add the PNY Attache USB thumb drive to the list of supported USB devices. You just need to type (as root) mount /dev/sda1 /usr/mnt.rom/usbstorage to use it as Dave said for the mp3 drive.
Wow, USB host is so great!!! I am digging up all the old USB devices I can find to see what does and does not work. Keep you posted.

usb.c: USB new device connect on bus1/1, assigned device number 19
usb.c: USB device 19 (vend/prod 0x4e6/0x1010) is not claimed by any active driver.
Zio usb cf adapter doesn't work. Neither will my minolta digital camera. Apple's keyboards work though. Hey! The quecat barcode reader works! No translation software so it just inputs garbage but it will scan...

just a silly question from newbie.
Will the iriver usb host cable work with Z SL-5500 ?
-
just a silly question from newbie.
Will the iriver usb host cable work with Z SL-5500 ?
the 5500 lacks the usb port that the 6000 has
Isn't the USB host plug on the bottom of the 6000 a mini type B, not mini type A?
It appears to have 5 pins, not 4.
If so, I think that this piece will work, too...
http://www.abccables.com/ca-000306.html (http://www.abccables.com/ca-000306.html)
however, it lacks the short length of wire that the iRiver adapter has, which is nice for reducing strain on the port
but abccables will also ship internationally, whereas iriver doesn't
-
mini-a is a five pin.
-
yes, you're right.. sorry about that
here's a very versatile one instead

yup, just to add to that, i did see the quickconnect at the university of washington bookstore yesterday. i'm sticking with the iriver adapter, i'm more likely to carry it around with me.
-
I ran across this thread earlier today, and stopped by staples to pick up the goldx quickconnect adapter. As irony would have it, I bought a Rio karbon last summer, and I was eager to try this out. Sure enough, the rio came up as a usb drive (although /dev/sda1 was not in fstab as aformentioned). I also used the adaptor to connect to my usb keyboard. Besides a few keys being in the wrong place, I am a happy camper.
Thanks for the information!

Could someone with a 6000 please look at the following pic of the C3000 (from Conics.net) and tell me if it is the same connector the 6000 uses for USB host (USB Mini-A)?
link (http://pda.conics.net/c3000/nov-10-2004/Dsc05593.jpg)
-
It's close. Mini a and b are sooo close it's hard to tell.
-
I looked at the other pictures on that site, and they were hooking up the 3000 to a mouse, and they comment on the host adaptor... so if I understand correctly it should be an A. However, I have a hard time telling the difference between A and B from looking at it, and would recommend getting the specs for the 3000.
-
quick note.
h00ligan: It's not in fstab if you just plug the sucker in, but I believe it is reconized during boot and added to fstab. you have to do a hard reset.
BarryW: bad news... from what I can tell that is not a standard mini a OR a standard mini b. I've looked at these suckers as much as the next guy, and a and b are pretty easy to tell apart: on an "a", the "wide" part is "taller" than the "narrow" part, on the "b", the "wide" part is shorter than the "narrow part.
in other words, the b looks like a rectangle with little wings, the a looks like a wider rectangle with a slice of cheese on top.
looking at that picture, it appears to have beveled corners. god knows what will fit. in a perfect world, that would be a special socket that both a and b would fit into, but whatever.
-
That's what I mean I'm looking at a b and an a right here and it's just barely different.
-
I found definitive answers to all my questions at usb.org (http://www.usb.org/developers/onthego/)
The USB receptacle on the back of the C3000 is actually a Mini-AB port. It can accept either a USB Mini-A or Mini-B plug. Which plug is connected to which device determines the role of each device (host or slave). Download the OTG Supplement (http://www.usb.org/developers/onthego/OTG1_0a%28PDFs%29.zip) (See OTG_0a.pdf) to read all you would ever want to know (and then some) about the USB On The Go spec. See sections 3.8-3.11 and 4.5 for connector and adapter info, and section 4.6 for plug and receptacle diagrams.
-
Where on the iriver site do you find the host adapter?
-
in the store,
under Accessories
then under Portable Media Player Accessories...
bottom of the list
yes, its sorta hidden
-
After receiving my USB mini-A to female A cable from IRiver, I discovered that I also needed a USB male A to USB male A cable. I found one for $2.59 +s&h at www.lsmicro.com
-
Another success story- I picked up a "Storage Box" USB laptop drive case and 40G hitachi laptop drive from PCClub last weekend. The case was $30, see:
http://www.pcclub.com/product_detail.cfm?itemno=A3326312 (http://www.pcclub.com/product_detail.cfm?itemno=A3326312)
I am waiting ont he iriver adapter in the mail, but with the goldx adapter I am not able to run the drive without external power on the Z. The drive runs OK on any other machine when powered through the USB cable, so I'm hoping that the problem lies in the GoldX adapter. The drive enclosure is slightly wider and about 1" shroter than the Z and so far works great. 40G for $120, not bad...
Cheers, JJ

Anyone got any idea where I can get hold of one of the iRiver host adaptors in the UK?
iRiver's European website doesn't list them as a separate item, and their US site won't accept orders from Europe

cwaig: where are ya dude? I'll be in south wales in late december... would be happy to throw one in the mail while i'm there. like i said before, i bought 4!

Received external laptop drive enclosure ordered from eBay link (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5141390327&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT) today. Used this with iRiver USB host adapter and could not get led's to show green (they only blinked red) I guess it needs more power than it can receive from usb connector. So my guess is that if you don't get enough voltage with goldx adater, you probably won't get it to work with iRiver adapter either. (Not to downgrade the iRiver adapter. It is a great little accessory.) Laptop enclosure works fine with desktop PC, so it is not a total waste. (Only $4.95 anyway plus shipping.) I will keep trying usb devices with this adapter and post results.
-
I don't know if there is another way to order or get an hand on these iRiver adapters, but shipping and handling charges to send in Canada is 25.00$ for 5$ gizmo. A little bit pricey...
hubcapboy: Don't you have a tranfer in Toronto or Montreal????

Hi, Im also interestet in the iriver cable, where can I get it in Germany?
The german iRiver support dont answers on email.

Is this the Cable that everybody is talking about from iRiver ?
BTW. This is on the US site under Accessories/Hard drive and all Accessories page
This cable is compatible with:
PMP-100 series
H300 Series
H140
H120
H100
iGP-100
iFP-800 series
iFP-700 series
This cable has a standard USB 'A' connector on one end, and a standard "Mini-B" plug on the other to connect to your iRiver player. This USB cable is identical to the cable bundled with the H series, iFP-700, and iFP-800 series players and is approxmately 5' in length

here's a link to the page for the actual item..
iRiver PMP USB Host Adapter Cable (http://https://secure1.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/product_detail.asp?CS=iriver&RowID=104&All=)
This page is supposed to appear in a frame, so not all of the links work properly.
But hopefully this will serve as a guide for those searching to find it.
Or you can search for "PMP USB Host Adapter Cable" from their estore homepage.

Thanks, just bought it yesterday
:-)
Now just the wait for the Zaurus 6000L to arrive.
and migrate my existing Zaurus C750 to PDAXROM.
-
I just bought the 5in and 6ft cables from cablesplus.
Total was $30 with shipping.
I post what I receive when they arrive.
I'm thinking of getting this, too. If anyone wants to go in on an order for Southern California (Orange County or San Diego), please let me know and we can combine orders to save on shipping.
-
I have an SL-600L with expansion adapter, and would like to connect a USB storage device to the expansion adapter's serial port. This would let me dock the Zaurus in it's cradle while leaving the USB key connected.
It's a piece o'cake to use the Zaurus' main USB port for USB storage devices, but before spending even more money on cable adapters, does anyone have thoughts on USB-host-capability of the 6000-L expansion adapter serial port? Or for that matter, for the serial port on the 6000 itself?
-
If you get a small USB hub you can connect up a bunch of stuff to the Z while in the cradle. Plus if you find a powered hub you don't have to supply power to the accessories you plug in- the hub will power them. I currently use the iriver host cable to connect to the hub, and have a keyboard and USB HDD plugged in. The iriver host adapter cable works well in the cradle- something that my original GoldX cable would not do.
-
Ooot - I hadn't noticed that the iRiver USB host cable can be left on the Zaurus while docking / undocking.
Thanks, freshroastedpeanuts! This makes things much easier.

I have an iHP120, and the cable you show is used to connect the player to a Windows box, in slave mode. I've been searching high and low for the host cable that iRiver says came with my iHP120, but though I believe I've found everything else I cannot find the short cable, nor do I remember specifically seeing one.
The other thing is that the shorter, host cable on their site has a female, full size connector on one end. This is to accept the standard, male A of the slave device. I don't think the cable you show will work as a host connection though I have never tried. If I had a female to female coupler I would, but alas I don't.
If someone could confirm or refute this, what I'm thinking is that the host cable may have male pins that fit into the center-most female receptacle, which is white, on the port on the bottom of our 6Ks (and my iHP 120). If true that would be the difference between the host and slave cables, because the slave cables do not have pins, instead they have an edge connector that rides under that white center connector.

Well, I just got my iRiver cable today. It has the mini-A on one side, and a female "normal" USB female on the other (like what every USB port on the back of a PC).
I plugged it into the Zaurus, inserted the cable in my Archos Jukebox Recorder, hit the power on the recorder and the 6000 froze solid! I had to hit the reset on the back and reboot. Repeating led to the exact same results...
Anyone know what is going on here?
This is the cable I got:
http://www.nexternal.com/iriver?Product=104 (http://www.nexternal.com/iriver?Product=104)
-
I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but I've had the same reaction plugging in a keyboard that is connected to a ps/2 to usb converter--Z locks solid and bricks itself for a while--even the power light won't come on. Scary as heck; eventually a hard reset fixed the problem.
I haven't tried to verify, but MAYBE this is related to a sudden power drop when you plug in the USB device on battery power. Have you tried plugging it in only when the power is connected?
Of course, in my case it's still academic since the symbols on my keyboard don't work, but I guess you can't have everything.

Well, I have my Archos Jukebox recorder working now on the Zaurus with the IRiver cable.
I still have the problem where when I plug it in, the Zaurus will freeze - even if the Zaurus is on AC power. WHY?? This is a *BIG* disappointment
However, if I turn on the jukebox and attach it prior to rebooting the Zaurus, it will boot up ok.
Then I can:
modprobe usb-storage
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbstorage
And hear the drive spin up!
Files show up in /mnt/storage/* - 20GB drive on the Zaurus!
Now to figure out how to avoid entering the commands (I just want to plug and play)

This works nicely also

Wow! I like that connector better - don't need two cables.
I wish I knew sooner, since we have a TigerDirect right in town here, and I waited a whole week for the iRiver cable.
I think I'll pick up one of those retractible ones.
Thanks for the link.
-
Fascinating thread! I have an Archos Jukebox Recorder as well and can't wait to try hooking it up to the Z!
I have the Ziplink USB cable (which works well with the Archos Jukebox). I have an additional adapter cable that will let me connect the Z to the Archos.
Does the cable have to be a "host" cable? I'm not sure what the differences are.
Thanks.

Note that the Tigerconnect cable is not labeled Mini A to A. Instead it says A to Mini 5-pin. That 5 pin could be a mini b, which is not much different physically. You have to look carefully or compare them side by side. But electrically they are very different.
I have two of the iRiver cables on order. Can't wait to get them and see if my thoughts on the pins turns out to be factual.
When you think about it, it's kind of lame of Sharp to sell a device that has host capability but not sell a cable to take advantage of it. Of course given the fact that they don't even support the device itself outside of warranty work it shouldn't come as a big surprise. After all "Sharp Minds" don't necessarily have time to consider the more mundane aspects of Customer Service. Not that I'm bitter mind you
Regards,
gdog

Another update - it turns out the Zaurus will not freeze up if I turn on my jukebox prior to inserting the cable in the Zaurus. If I insert the cable first then turn it on, it locks up the zaurus.
Also, I added this line to my /etc/fstab:
/dev/sda1 /mnt/usbstorage auto noauto,user 0 0
So now I can (as root) do "mount /mnt/usbstorage" after plugging it in.
Can this be fixed so:
1) I don't have to be root
2) I don't have to manually mount it
-
Good info jbruno, especially the fact that it will not freeze if powered up before connecting it. I've got a cable coming and I'd like to try a few things. Don't want to have to reset my Z...
Thanks,
gdog

Gdog, try rereading that tiger direct header again it says Male Type A-Mini USB 5-Pin to Male Type A Connectors where do you come up with B ??
I have this and it works plain and simple

Hi everybody
Is there anybody living in the USA who could sell me the "iriver cable" ( http://www.nexternal.com/iriver?Product=104 (http://www.nexternal.com/iriver?Product=104) ) and send it to me in France ?
-
Gdog, try rereading that tiger direct header again it says Male Type A-Mini USB 5-Pin to Male Type A Connectors where do you come up with B ??
I have this and it works plain and simple
binjinx,
This is what I see
"Zip-Linq's uniquely designed retractable USB A to mini 5-pin cable is a must for mobile PC users that require one of the most advanced space-saving technologies available."
and this, lower down
"Connect your computer to a digital camera, MP3 player or any other USB device that requires a mini 4-pin USB connection. Easily extends to more than two feet by pulling both ends. Durable ABS plastic housing is less than four inches long when retracted! The perfect 4-Pin Mini USB cable solution for mobile users on the go!"
Of particular importance there, aside from what it doesn't say, is the fact that it does say it is a 4-pin connector. I believe, though I may be mistaken, that the host cable requires and uses 5 pins...come to think of it, the top description contradicts the bottom description. Says 5 pin on top, and 4 pin on the bottom.
And I don't see anything there about it being specifically a Mini A cable.
The reason I said it may be a mini b is that the mini a and mini b look very similar, but are incompatible both physically and electrically. And there is much confusion surrounding even the mini a host and mini a slave cables. I have an iRiver iHP120 that came with a mini a slave cable, which is used to attach the player to a pc for the purpose of dragging and dropping files where the iHP is a slave device, but it cannot be used a host cable to connect peripherals or other hdd's to the iHP. The same port on the device is used however. So before I plunk my money down on yet another cable that may or may not work I'm going to make darned sure it is described in such a way that it will provide a host connection between my device and another. Which is why I've ordered two of the iRiver cables that consist of a mini a male to standard a female.

You're right pldrouin!!! It does say that. Bad habit of mine, I almost never look at my title bar
Now binjinx, when you say "it works plain and simple", are you referring to using it to connect to something in slave mode, such as to your pc to run "Zaurus File Transfer" or in host mode? If you are using this cable to run your Z in host mode, what device are you connecting to the full size male A connector on the other end of this retractable cable?
Thanks,

That's not a host cable, that's for plugging into your Z into your PC.

I think I found a better adapter. No cable at all! Picked it up tonight at Fred Meyers but found it on the web here (http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4008213).
-
Another pic.
-
nice and compact... good find
did you have to buy the whole kit? (I know you said Fred Meyer, but the link is to a universal kit from JandR)
I sorta like the short bit of cable on the iRiver for the same reason I like the 2.5->3.5 adapter from Seidio.. to mitigate extra stress on the port.
That said, I might still be interested in getting one if one can just buy the single adapter and not the whole kit.
-
I've been reading the various posts concerning the USB connector on the 6000L. HDs, keyboards etc.
So, if we are using the USB port on the bottom of the 6000L, the Zaurus is the host and any client hardware can be plugged in, correct?
And IF the drivers are available and installed we should expect everything to work.
This is wishful thinking.
-
Have to get the whole kit. I've never been able to find the adapter by itself.
-
Ok, I hope that someone can help me out here. I have an Archos Arcdisk and an Archos AV340. I have been able to successfully connect and use the AV340 and various USB thumbdrives as external HDs for the Zaurus via the USB host and cable from iRiver. But for some reason I can't get the ARCDISK connected.
Here is the process:
1. Go to terminal and login as SU
2. mount /dev/sda1 /usr/mnt.rom/usbstorage
And I get:
Mounting /dev/sda1 on /usr/mnt.rom/usbstorage failed: No such device or address
This command worked for the AV340 and the USB drives. I can also go to system info and it lists ARCDISK USB2.0 under USB devices. When I reboot and disconnect the ARCDISK it doesn't show, so there is some kind of comm happening. Any ideas?
I am fairly new to Linux. I am learing. As soon as I get comfortable with on the Z I will most likey go to it on my desktop as well. I would also appreciate any help on getting these USB devices to automount if possible. I think that I understand that it takes editing fstab, but not really sure how to do it. I know vi is an editor I can use, where can I get help on using vi? Or are there others that are better/easier?
Oh, one more thing, I have tried the ARCDISK with and without external power. I also verified that it is fine by connecting to 2 different PCs, one running 2K and the other XP. Both recognzed and used the ARCDISK no problem.
-
The only thing I've used with the USB port so far is hard drives. It works with a mount / unmount command very well. I hear many USB keyboards work very nicely too.
Others -- well, it's a driver thing. USB mice need work, from what I hear.
-
BarryW - I found that same part in a smaller adapter kit from G.E. that I got at a closeout store in Pennsylvania. If you look around enough, you would be amazed at what you can find.
mpers3 - Here is the url of a page of vi commands that I find very helpfull.
http://www.chem.brown.edu/instructions/vi.html (http://www.chem.brown.edu/instructions/vi.html)
-
Qtopia does not support USB mice, it works only with touchscreen. Use X11-based ROM instead.
-
Does the USB cable from Sharp ('part CE-UC1) work with the 6000L ?
The cable seems to connect to the port on the bottom side of the 6000L if inserted face down, but when I do connect the 6000L to my windows XP box, the new hardware popup does not come on and windows doesnt detect the 6000L at all.
My C750 did work though with the same box and same cable.
I just want to enable VNC between XP and 6000L.

I got my connector from iRiver for my iHP120. Strangely enough it does not fit into my iHP120, but it does fit nicely into my 6K. I've connected a USB keyboard, without rebooting and it does work though some of the keys are either wrong or do not produce anything at all.
But I was wrong about the configuration of the connector itself. It does not contain separate pins that plug into the inner, female connector on either my 6K or my iRiver. Rather it is an edge connector that slides under the edge connector of the mini A port on my 6K.
But I guess the important thing is that I can now use the 6K as a USB host, providing of course I have a need to connect something to it. I'm hoping to find a keyboard that works correctly for all keys, without having to do a reboot of the Zaurus each time I connect it.
Think I'll try my USB compact flash adapter when I get home and see if I can mount a card that way.
-
The port on the bottom is for USB host mode only. As far as I know, USB networking is available through the cradle only. I just bridged my ethernet card and SL6000 together and made sure that the USB device was set up for DHCP.
-
How does one connect the Zaurus 6000 to the WinXP desktop for file tranfer/VNC etc ?
I dont want to use the HUGE cradle that comes with it. What other third party cable do work with the 6000 i/o PORT at the bottom ?
Even though the I/O port at the bottom looks the same as the I/O port on the C750 (excepting its faced downward), the USB Cable for C750 "CE-UC1" does not seem to work with the 6000L.
My desktop just doesnt detect a new hardware connected when I plug in the 6000L with the C750 cable.
Does SerialIO have any cables (small and sleek with keyboard usable that they are stil selling for the 6000l) ?
Thanx for any pointers
-
There are a few options available that I know of.
1) Use the built-in wi-fi to connect.
2) Get a TCP/IP CF Ethernet card + twisted pair cable and use that to connect
3) Obtain the ZThinCable USB (Link (http://www.serialio.com/products/adaptors/ZThinCableUSB.htm)) for serial port -> USB transfer.
Normally I use standard TCP/IP (wi-fi or ethernet) methods.
-
Thanks Soundwave...
Too bad Sharp went and changed the I/O port on the C750 and the 6000L otherwise I guess the C7xxx series USB cable (I have the part as CE-UC1) would have worked directly.
I want to connect to the office machine, so Wifi is out and Ethernet is not an option because of security, so that leaves me with the cradle or some thirdparty cable as you linked.
As a side note : Is there any adapter between the USB cable end which plugs into the Cradle to the USB receiver end at the bottom of the Zaurus ?
Damn - sorry but thats a USB host, forgot...so that wont work either.
I guess somewhere I read that the Serial cable for the earler Zaurus would work on the 6000 with the side holder clips sawed off. Is that right ?
-
Nilch,
An I/O cable for a sl-5500/5600 will connect a 6000 to a pc without the cradle (at least in Win2K, WinXP and Fedora Linux). The difference is that the connector in the bottom of a 6000 is turned 180degs from a 5500/5600 (the physical connector, not the connector pinout). However, unlike a SerialIO thincable, you can't use the keyboard on the 6000 while it is plugged in.

Hi there,
I am using a MiniSync cable from Boxwave. They're not too expensive and you can find them here:
Boxwave (http://www.boxwave.com/products/minisync/minisync-retractable-cable-sharp-zaurus-sl-6000_501.htm)
I use it for file transfer, sync and VNC. They delivered in about 4 days to Canada.
Regards,
Doug
-
Thanx. Just ordered the BoxWave miniSYnc cable. Looks nice and carry-able too.
-
As already mentioned, a G.E. USB 2.0 6-in-1 Cable Kit (stock number HO97920) is being sold in closeout stores. I found it in a Big Lots store in Georgia, priced at $7.99. It includes a 6-foot USB extension cable (male A to female A) and four molded adapters that can be attached to the cable. One of the adapters is mini A to female A. I've just used this adapter to attach an iriver h120 player to the 6K. Using directions posted earlier in this thread, I was able to mount the h120 drive and read from it.
-
Cool thing about the Zthin cable from SerialIO is that it can be used to charge the Z, and the keyboard can be used while connected (assuming one connects it after the keyboard has been slid open first). Now if only Sharp had not made the Z require a proprietary driver and software and instead just let it show up as a mass storage device....
-
Hey
I found a USB to mini A cable that works on a SL 6000.
You can plug USB peripherals such as keyboards, mice, externally powered USB hard drives and card readers into the Zaurus.
http://www.dcables.com/catalog/1_8_meter_u...in__3239068.htm (http://www.dcables.com/catalog/1_8_meter_usb_2_0__plug_type_a_to_mini_usb_a_plug__4pin__3239068.htm)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=39904\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
No, it does not work for SL 6000. They say it on the web site clearly. Too bad I notice that after I placed my order.

"miniSync simultaneously charges and synchronizes your handheld".
I don't see why you can't use keyboard with the miniSync as with the Zthin

The only solution I see is to carry a usb thumbdrive, as you probably would anyway , with the sharp drivers loaded in it. Anybody got better solution?
-
Just got the Boxwave miniSync cable yesterday, fired it up today at office and everythiing works fine - File transfer (which is so damned slow) and VNC. It does also charge the Zaurus (so I can possibly keep the charger at home).
Note : it also seems to work fine thru my USB hub on my monitor.
I really do miss the USB storage feature that my C750 (Caco ROM) had. That was so nifty to tranfer files between my HDD and Zaurus. Allright the Zaurus file transfer utility does do the same, albeit you have to start off a new app (it does not work integrated in the File explorer as USB storage feature) - but its sooooo slow and flaky.
I tried the Qtopia Desktop (I dont really need sync) to just sync the Documents tab - so as to use that to tranfer files to the Zaurus, but this Qtopia desktop doesnt seem to have any Documents TAB sync at all - just the regular Addressbook, Calendar and Todo sync.
Well I guess we got to wait till we have a Cacko rom for the Zaurus 6000L too (but has Sharp released the source for the 6000L ?)
Last thought - will give the FTP method a try by installing an FTP server on the zaurus, that should be faster and stabler than the crazy prorietary Sharp file Transfer thingie.
-
I'll second that comment about the Zaurus file transfer being slow.
With my SL5600, I was able to mount the Zaurus (in the cradle/USB) as a remote drive from my Windows box. It was much faster and you could drag and drop files betwen the PC and the Z. In addition, since it was a logical drive, you could edit files right off of the Z's drive (for example fire up Excel to edit a worksheet stored on the Z's SD card.
THe bad news is that I can't figure out how to make it work on the 6000. I've been back over what I thought I did on the 5600 but the 6000 does not work the same way. I cannot mount the Z as a drive. If I'm running on my WIFI network at home, I can see it and mount it after tweaking the Samba stuff. But it does not work over the USB/Cradle at work.
I do notice that when I put the 6000 in the cradle, the qtsamba program starts but I still cannot make the connection.
-
I don't know if there is another way to order or get an hand on these iRiver adapters, but shipping and handling charges to send in Canada is 25.00$ for 5$ gizmo. A little bit pricey...
hubcapboy: Don't you have a tranfer in Toronto or Montreal????
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=54484\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
did you ever get one of these? if not, let me know and I'll ship one to you for free
-
I'm very temped by the Boxwave minisync. But wondering if there're any better options out there. Are the Zthin cable's transfer rate any faster then minisync?
I'm planning to include THIS (http://www.boxwave.com/products/batteryadapter/index.htm) battery adaptor for minisync if ever going to pull the trigger.
-
Since 6000 came with Samba installed, I just use that to copy files to Zaurus. I don't think it can be any easier.

Hello
Can you access the keyboard while charging with boxwaave minisync on a SL6000 ?
That would make it very interesting to me.
Regarding mass storage emulation, I have that working on my SL6000. I did create a separate 128 Mb partition on my 1 Gig SD card, which makes my Zaurus a big USB key :-) That's the preferred method - if you try to access/mount the partition from a PC and the Zaurus at the same time, it crashes often. Using /dev/mmcda2 is a nice workaround.
I also created a small script to switch between usb net/storage modes.
It's just a matter of taking your C750 scripts on your 6000 and using my kernel - I recommand you don't use the ffpe version (some ppl experience bugs) and that you create /etc/modules before starting, or you may experience SD/WIFI problems.

Sadly you cant use the internal keyboard on the 6000 while using the boxwave minisync. It just blocks the keyboard from sliding out by a little margin.
I would be inetrested in the USB NET/sorage switcher script and try your new kernel too for emulating the USB mass storage feature.

Can you pull out the cover of the keyboard first, then connect the cable? If not, is it possible to shave down that margin without damaging it? Last question, can I use the serial port on the side of Z6K sled with minisync? no access of internal keyboard certainly offsets the advantage of having this cable.
-
I think I found a better adapter. No cable at all! Picked it up tonight at Fred Meyers but found it on the web here (http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4008213).
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=59662\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Just a caveat; this is a nice adapter if you plan on using the device outside of the cradle.
However, I have just today gotten the iRiver adapter, and it works fine in or out of the cradle; the piece of the cord in the middle allows the end of the adapter to hang out of the conveniently placed gap in the cradle. This adapter shown above would not work from the cradle.
-
just got my iRiver adaptor. haven't got any keyboard or mouse working. But my no name (actually there is a name: US Modular) usb pen drive got recognized instantly. very impressed.
-
If you don't see usbkbd.o after you open a terminal and type lsmod then you may need to do the following:
(I'm assuming that you're using the default Sharp Rom)
bash-2.05% su -
# modprobe usbkbd
And that's it. My logitech wireless keyboard seems to work great. As far as the mouse is concerned... I'm not really sure about that one. I haven't found any clear way to get the mouse to work yet.

Hi,
Beeing in Italy, i've could not find iRiver cable, as well googling for Mini Type A Male -> Type A Female in any syntax did not bring anything.
I found a Mini Type A Male -> Type B Male on www.lindy.com, ordered, recieved today and checked. Works.
So, the cable costs 3 euro, delivery (DHL) 9 euro, total 12, which is cheaper than iRiver, at least for Europe, and is still usable if you buy an USB hub (10-20 euro), which I condider a highly useful device. As well, there is a lot devices except hubs that have Type B female and B/A F/M adapters/cables.
Here is the link:
http://www.lindy.com/chit/productfolder/03/31627/index.php (http://www.lindy.com/chit/productfolder/03/31627/index.php)
And the pictures:
-
1. Go to terminal and login as SU
2. mount /dev/sda1 /usr/mnt.rom/usbstorage
And I get:
Mounting /dev/sda1 on /usr/mnt.rom/usbstorage failed: No such device or address
Given the error, and that it works on Windows systems, I'm going to guess it has an NTFS file system. If I'm right, that's the problem - the Z does not support NTFS.
-
This works nicely also
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...21182&CatId=445 (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=521182&CatId=445)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=58407\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
can you qualify how it woks nicely and with what device?
I just received the zip-linq connector, and the mini usb connector does not connect to the 6000. The mini usb connector is different than the iriver connector.
This may work nicely with my digital camera, but I bought it with the thought of using it with my 6000.
I actually bought 5, thinking that if they worked, I would keep one and give away the remaining 4.
-
For those who have success connecting hd to z6k, do you use external power or use the power from usb? I borrowed one from my friend and found that my z can't provide enough power for that hd.
-
I have successfully connected both of my Toshiba 2.5' HD (one 20G 4800rpm, the other 40G 5400 rpm). Both of them need to have external battery supply. My usb cable for the hd housing came with two usb male connect at one end (one for data&power, the other for extra power). I guess z usb host end can't supply enough power for the 2.5' hd, kinda like an unpowered usb hub and things in that class. The new 1.8' hd can suck power directly from the z as mentioned in the other thread. Rio carbon connects no problem. So I'd guess items with their own power like rio karmar, Zen Xtra, iPod would probably work with Z too. But don't take my words for sure.
dmesg spits things like scsi simulates usb mass storage. then I mounted /dev/sda1 to /mnt/usbhd. that's it.
-

Thanks Crazy, but no that is not the problem, I just double checked, it is FAT 32. With external power it will sometimes mount, but I get errors when trying to write to it, again since I am new and learning linux, this may have to do with permissions. I am in the process of moving back to the states from overseas right now, so don't have a lot of time to work on it right now. But I have made some progress, thanks for the help.

mpers3: You may want to try the mount command with the -t switch. As in
mount -t /dev/sda1 /usr/mnt.rom/usbstorage
You may have to add the following line to your /ect/fstab file.
/dev/sda1 /mnt/usbstorage auto noauto,owner 0 0
I have been able to mount a usb thumbdrive and an Archos AV 340 using these techniques. However I am not able to get usb cf or sd cardreaders to mount. When I try I get an invalid argument error. Does anyone know how to do this? I know, the 6000L has cf and sd slots, but I have stuff installed on the cards in thoes slots, and I don't want to pull them if I don't have to. Thanks.

You need a mini-A. They sold you a mini-B. There is no mini-A ziplinq I'm aware of (else I'd be purchasing it in the minute)
And it's nearly impossible to create one (when my javeo ebuds died, I figured I could open the central part, and put a mini-A to A instead... nope. there's a spring that one can hardly put back in)
I will tell you if I ever find a mini-A ziplinq (my hopes are low :-(

Tired of lurking ont the net all day long for a cheap solution I broke my moneybox and bought this from conics.net : http://conics.net/shp/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/i...ost-diag_en.jpg (http://conics.net/shp/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/images/host-diag_en.jpg)
It sure is expensive (40$ : http://conics.net/shp/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/sl-acc.html (http://conics.net/shp/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/sl-acc.html) ) but the € is strong and I got it for 34,95€. I ordered it a week ago and received it this morning. All excited I turned the 6000 on pluged the cable and pluged the only usb device I had at hand : my usb-key. A look at dmesg and a mount after I was browsing it
Now endless possibility arise back home I'll try with my external 250GB drive (external power), my iRiver H120 (could put whole OZ feeds on it instead of them eating big space on SD/CF), my camera too (I think I saw some gphoto2 ipk for OZ somewhere). Hey! anyone tried with a mouse ?! Un fortunately I don't have (yet) a USB keyboard...
The only drawback is that I have to find a place to put the cable along with the 6000 and not loose it...
As an old philosoph said (Droopy) : "You know what ? I'm happy !"
EDIT : http://openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.....1.4-r0_arm.ipk (http://openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.2/feed/console/gphoto2_2.1.4-r0_arm.ipk)

anyone tried with a mouse ?!
Don't know about OZ but it works great with Sharp ROM + fast kernel

Finally got a 6000L today, but very confused about the usb host port.
Firstly, the mini-B connector on the back of the docking station (the one sharp gives you a cable for)- is that for usb host or slave?
Now, just what type is the port on the Z? Loads of ppl say it's a mini-A, and I've got several mini-B cables, none of which fit, but the port is for OTG (On The Go) USB connections and should, according to the spec, take mini-A and mini-B connectors, which will decide whether it is a host or slave. So why don't my mini-B connectors fit (not that it is much use to me as a slave port)?
Does anybody know where I can get a suitable cable for a reasonable price in the UK?
Iriver won't sell/ship outside US/Canada.
I am also interested in a [insert zaurus port type here] to mini-B cable- anyone know where I can get one?
Thanks
Simon

Thanks for the link! This place sells other, similar cables as well, and has worldwide offices. I ordered two cables (mini-A->B, mini-A->mini-B - covers most USB devices w/o attached cables) and got them 3 days later (US). iRiver is currently out of stock; claims it will remain so until July.. Also, not in your post: the cables I ordered are 0.5M and very flexible, so they are pretty compact.

i think he is talking about the MINI A usb Connector on the 6000, you need a Mini A to standard USB cable.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=19846\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
What is the correct name of a standard USB plug? Is it "A" or "B"?
Jon Loldrup
-
"A" I believe. the boxy things with the cut corners are "b" the little ones that conect to your card reader (for example) are mini-b
-
Has any of you guys have any luck with USB 2.0 flash drives?
I picked up one of these (http://www.lge.com/catalog/prodmodeldetail?actType=search&page=1&modelCategoryId=CTG1000663&categoryId=CTG1000506&parentId=CTG1000439&modelPrefix=400000&globalCode=UBIU+1GS01&globalSuffix=000000&model=NOTHING) little beautys (only $60 for the 1GB version at Sam's).
They are quite small with the retractable connector feature, and you can't beat the price.
Except that I can't get them to work with the Z. Hotplug doesn't even recognize when its plugged in! The docs says that it does support Linux w/ 2.4 kernel, and I can mount it without problems with my Compaq Presario running Slackware 9.1.
Perhaps it is an issue with the USB 2.0 interface?
-
Have you tried mounting it manually ?
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbstorage
where usbtoarge is a existing folder under /mnt
it should normally work at USB 1.1 speed.

Is usb-storage module loaded? If not try loading it manually that should force the kernel to see the drive.
Also this might be a silly question but are you using a USB host cable (mini-A) to connect the USB flash drive? It won't be recognised if you are using the black usb min-b cable that came with the zaurus.
Stu
P.S. iRiver Japan has the iRiver USB host cables for 520 yen (http://www.iriver.co.jp/estore/details.php?3,9,118) for those of you in the Land of the Rising Sun who were wondering where to get a mini-A usb cable from. I walked into an iRiver store and picked one up right away

Thanks for the link to Venier. Since I think I also located a possible adapter kit with mini-A 5-pin female I thought I'd share it, although the Vernier $5 plus shipping looks pretty good.
I found the following possibility (also available in 6 foot length?) which looks interesting:
