Title: sftp problem with Mandrake
Post by: radioz on October 31, 2004, 12:10:19 am
I can connect my Z (5600) via usb to my Mandrake 10 machine just fine using sftp from the command line. I can transfer files in either direction without errors. However, when I try to transfer files using Konqueror on my PC, the file transfer fails part way through and leaves a *.part file on the Z (assuming transfer from pc->Z). It fails every time.

For those unfamiliar with this, you set this up by putting 'sftp:root@zaurus' in the url window. Konq then displays files on the z like any other ftp access. It displays the files just fine; I can traverse directories, etc, but when I try to download a file to the Z it gets part way through and dies.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Have you tried using the fish:// protocol in Konqueror instead?

Um, no I'm not familiar with that one.

I tried: 'fish://root@zaurus' and got "An error occurred while loading fish://root@zaurus: The protocol perl: not found is not supported."

So I assume it must be a Perl package? I don't have Perl installed on my z (I've been playing around with Python and gcc instead)

It's a puzzle that KDE happily connects via sftp: but can't handle the downloads. Has anyone else tried sftp via Konqueror?

Thanks,
radioz

Yep, you need Perl installed on your Z for this to work (according to what I've read about fish:// - http://osdir.com/Article2159.phtml) (http://osdir.com/Article2159.phtml))

I'd be interested to hear if anyone's got it to work though.

I didn't check to see if the entire file got transferred. So renaming the file is all that is required?
It sounds like sftp is buggy in KDE/Mandrake.

Thanks for the tip.

I've made the same expierence with fish,  but with KBearSiteManager I'm able to build up a sftp-connection and actually use it (KDE 3.1.4, KBear 2.1). I've tested it with copying (drag & drop!   ) an ogg-file (3.2 MB) from my PC-partition to the zaurus, deleting it on the PC and copying it backwards from the Zaurus, and finally deleting it on the Zaurus, all with KBearSite, so it seems ok and one can look forward to copy larger data chunks as well, like whole directory trees, etc. But beware of symlinks, I found that scp has problems with Symlinks, maybe sftp faces similar problems. Also, I can not say right now if KBearSite leaves some management data of its own on the Zaurus, I hope not but who knows.. in the long run it could result in memory loss if such thing would happen. But that risk I'm willing to take if I'm spared of typing the same commands again and again therefore.

You might try executing the sync command after the transfer is complete on the target machine.  Maybe the file rename command was issued, but for some reason the final commit is still buffered.  Also, your file viewer may not have updated since the rename occured.  So try refreshing your view of the folders in the file.

Good Luck!

Hi

I guess you are using USB

that is the problem, not Mandrake, perl or Konqueror.

See  https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12086 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12086)

Change to WiFi and all the problems you describe and many more, just disappear!
