Title: Desktop screenshot thread!
Post by: informer on November 01, 2004, 06:07:35 am
Do show us your ZAURUS desktop screenshots!

Would be useful for people interested in buying a Zaurus.

I know you can put fancy wallpaper and stuff, but I think seeing applications in action would be useful.  The Kompany screenshots were cool (http://www.thekompany.com/embedded/rom/screenshots.php3) , any others?

Hi,
this is 3.3.6-pre1/hentges/opie1.1.4/OE Kernel running on a SL-5500.
Since this is an outdated rom I assume the new OZ 3.5.1 looks nicer

The Applications:

People,

Thanks for contributing.

Teletubbie - very nice!  In portrait form, you have to use the pen and not the keyboard.  How do you chat with this method?  Do you use the pen to write your messages on the screen like on a Palm?  Do you find that you have to scroll a lot?

DZ - interesting, looks very functional.  I think I'll probably end up with functional than a pretty screen.  Do fancy icons and wallpapers slow down the Zaurus during daily activity?

Jerrybme - nice!  Looks a lot like Windows hey! (not a bad thing).  About the quake/doom games, I assume they won't play on a full screen?  Is there such thing as a sidebar like in windows?   I'm a bit confused in your second set of screenies (mainly the taskbar).  Seems cluttered to me.  Is that how tasks are represented?

BTW, can you set your desktop to an offline/online webpage like on Windows?  If one could run a self running web server on their Zaurus and get it to view a funtional page, that would add functionality (something like a self made sidebar, or links to daily documents).

Anyway, keep them coming!  They are useful!

Hi Informer,
I always use the Keyboard for Chat (Well, not on my TabletPC). Note it is a 5500. Like the 5600 and the 6000 you have the slide down Keyboard. The lanscape view is not useful with the Keyboard on these models.

@ The other Guys:
Amazing screenshots. The transparent console is really bleeding edge for my understanding of a PDA. Real eye-candy.
Cheers,
Sam

informer: I'm sure having a wallpaper might slow it down a little bit as it now has to render an image.  I don't think it's much of a slowdown/battery hit though

To the rest: amazing looking screenshots   You're making me want to switch back to pdaXrom.

informer: Quake does run in full screen in the latest pdaxrom release, you just need to do a little scripting (I could find the thread for you), and it runs at about 16fps.

The desktop manager and the file manager is ROX.
The window manager is XFCE

The icons on the bottom center of the desktop are manually arranged to emulate the feeling of OS X

ROX lets you to define a custom icon to a particular file or directory or to a mime type, what is cool

XFCE gives you the option to change which window buttons are displayed and their position

The icons are taken from GnoMetal, an iconset for gnome2 i found at themes.freshmeat

The xmms skin is xTunes, also found at freshmeat, i guess

I think a fluxbox howto is in order.
It's not really hard, it's just a pain to have to do the conf yourself.
After installing pdaXrom, and noticing the thing is absolutely unusable (oudated toolchain, unmapped keys, the works), I must say I expected a bit more.
I'm reflashing the Z with cacko to extract the termcaps, etc to try and get it more comfy. It's irritating to have to do everything from remote, just because the damn thing hasn't mapped ALT and CTRL. (Joe without CTRL is... particular).
I litterally had to setup a native+cross compiling env just to get the tools I needed. Weee.
At the same time, it's showing a LOT of promise, since the basic functionnality is there, and from now on it's just a matter of tuning. Let's hope RC6 makes that easier.

The fluxbox ipk should work right away, just install and install the libraries tiff, ungif and imlib. Then for the keys you can edit /etc/kb/corgi.xmodmap. ant /home/root/.fluxbox/keys. Then everything should work!

Is this version of Fluxbox supposed to work with RC5? Because I'm getting the following error: "fluxbox: relocation error: fluxbox: symbol __floatsisf, version GCC_3.0 not defined in file libgcc_s.so.1 with link time reference".

Quite a mouth full

Anyway, it looks as if either it expects a different libgcc version, or it's compiled with a different float setting (which changed between RC5 and the previous version). Or is this just a matter of upgrading a package?

Any help is appreciated.

Where does everyone get those cool icons/wallpapers/other graphics from?

[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div] (http://index.php?act=findpost&pid=91010\")
I got them from Mac OS X itself    And also quite a few from xicons.com. Installing them is pretty easy, and I'm kind of kicking myself for not doing it sooner.

Take the icon you want and drag it into [a href=\"http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12307]Pixadex[/url]. Then select it in Pixadex and export it as a .PNG -- I've found a resolution of 48 pixels works best on my 6000. Name it something memorable.

FTP over to the folder "home/QtPalmtop/pics/" on your Z; or you can use the Z's own Filemanager run in root mode and transfer the files from somewhere else like an SD card. Drag and drop the new PNG icon files in there.

Go to the "Tab Setting" customization application on your Z. Select an app to edit, click on its icon, wait while it loads the picture library, and then assign your preferred icon to it. It will display in red to mark the change. Exit the app and you're done.

Of course, you could always figure out what the Qtopia icon files are called and then replace them with your own icons of the same name, but I always like to be able to undo my tinkering if necessary.

To maybe make things easier for you, I've uploaded the icons I used on my Z to my iDisk. Click here (http://homepage.mac.com/ericjiannelli/FileSharing4.html) and then download the macZicons.zip file under the Zaurus rubric. That'll cut out the first few steps.

These icons are high-quality and aren't size optimized, so if you were to dump them all into "pics" they'll eat up about 500K on your internal memory. Personally, I'd rather that than symlink all of them to SD. If you find a way to symlink an entire folder from the pics folder (my attempts failed), please let me know how to do it.

Very sweet screenshots.
I've recently installed Cresho's OSLINUX theme, however I would like to drop in a background similar to the grey one in your second screenshot.  I think that would bring out the detail of the icons and respective shading better.
Where could I get a hold of that background wallpaper?

Thanks.

I know the feeling  Sadly these screenshots can't show off all the animations and other eyecandy

Anyways, there's still a loooong way to go for a useable release of OZ/E17 (if there will ever be one)
Currently it's just sitting there and looking (damn) good.

The current image size is ~50MB uncompressed (ext2) which is a problem for
devices with <128MB of flash. However, the work on it has just begun and we may be able to shave off a few MB's.

Oh, and while FireFox sure is sweet, it isn't really useable. It's a slow memory hog which pulls down the whole system when running. Ok, might have been a side-effect of of the way the rootfs was mounted (but I highly doubt it).

enlightenment?  eeesh!  never thought it would look so good after many tries of ugly desktop environments for it.

I really wish there were more linux users and developers diving into the zaurus line.  I could'nt imagine what else can come of this.  I do want to thank sharp(japan) to giving us something to look forward to.

thanks for the picks coredump.   and i also wish you had more help in finishing this project.

you ever thought of making an installer were the core files can run off the internal and secondary files that arent dependent run of sd without needing to modify the sd to ext partition?

for example... make the image install to internal.  the operating system is all that is needed with no basic anything for it to help it run unless you include kopi which needs to be installed internally since it runs all the time.  Then have ipk's created and put out in a feed were people can download what they want and installable in sd.

my zaurus.  i swear i have over 250mb excluding Qxt running on a 1gb sd.  i can eject the card and not worry what is dependent to the main os which makes my ejecting card seemless.

is it possible?  i think there is no need to have a openzaurus that will include everything.  Just make the openzaurus with a system windows for configuration and network and also, installer.  People can download konqueror, opera, mozilla, xmms as they please and install to sd.

Brian:

Any way you could pass on your procedure for getting pdaXrom onto your 5500?  I've been thinking of moving in that direction, but wasn't sure I had the hardware.
Thanks.

Nice screenshots, chal.  Good collection of programs, too.
I noticed Konqueror. I've recently somehow lost opera.  Is it possible to run Konqueror on Sharp ROM?

Yeah it'll run on tKc. Not sure about the stock sharp, as I haven't used it in a while. It takes up a little less space than Opera. Some people have reported having problems with both of thes, but I had no problem with either. I'm not sure what the difference is in web browsing, because I only use it offline to view HTML Bibles and reference docs.

I'm not sure, but you may need the kmicrokdelibs. I already had KOPI installed when I installed Konqueror.

... oh and excuse the horizontal lines in some pictures... i dont know why they exist (but they are not from the zaurus... i cannot see them there. maybe it is because of the screenshot application). and also excuse the jpg low-quality. also the screenshots appear a lot darker than it is on the zaurus itself.

Please, please, please tell me this will run on the SL-5500s (OZ/Hentges)...I've been running Enlightenment since before the initial release (DR0.3) about 7 years ago. I would dearly love to have it on my Zaurus...

I'm up for that, too!  Sweet Looking.

I'm still considering installing E17 on my linux box at home, but haven't decided if I want to take the plunge of possibly screwing anything up.

It should be possible to run on a 5500, though it will require some pruning to the flash image as even e-image-core comes out at about 30Mb (and e-image was c.80Mb iirc). You'll definitely need an ext2 formated SD/MMC/CF card handy

Wow... pdaXrom has come a long way since the last time I tried it. With Xfce and ROX, I finally  can have a functional desktop on my pda- and killer apps to run on it. I used to have a lot of people tell me how cool my Zaurus was, but now when they see it running a real X desktop, their jaws drop. I've been working on a custom theme, it's come a long way but still has a bit of tweaking to do. I'm using the NOX (Noia on ROX) icon set, and a custom skin which was inspired by H20-gtk2-Saphire. I'll try to get the whole works bundled up for anyone who is interested. With pdaXrom as good as it is now, I have no reason to go back to the other ROMs.

Stuffman, What Z you have there? Seems you're using your Z a lot by the looks of what you got going on that desktop... have you run into any snags with pdaxrom? I've got a C3100 and really have to use it for work and what not so I've been leery about going to pdaxrom.

Here is a "Mac-like" screenshot, made on:

* Sharp Zaurus C860 with Sharp ROM (other models look the same)
* running X/Qt and QuantumSTEP
* the Qt menubar can be hidden leaving the top row menu bar

Please note that this is "work in progress", so be patient with the layout and graphical design (we currently focus on functionality and compatibility and hunting bugs).

I have a 1GB and will get as large a card as is available. In fact, you have me all jazzed, I'm going to install it on my laptop...

Is it configured to run under OZ/GPE or as a replacement for Opie?

I have a good 'ol C860 (soon to celebrate it's second birthday, and still to be surpassed by any other non-Zaurus PDA). I usually don't do all that stuff at any one time, it was just that way to show off the desktop. So far, pdaXrom has been pretty impressive, and even more so with Xfce. If you use the default desktop manager, things are pretty nice and stable, and for the short time I was using it I had no problems whatsoever. Xfce is really nice, and things seem to work well also, but there are a few issues when using the ROX filemanager (the most annoying being that if you forget to close any windows showing what you have on removable media before you eject it, the whole thing crashes and you have to start it up again with the terminal. Other than that, being able to use KO/Pi and Ka/Pi are wonderful, and running Firefox is awesome, though it's a somewhat old package and really needs a going-through to slim it down as much as possible (it's pretty slow and a memory hog). pdaXrom has come a long way, so I'd recommend giving it a shot. Just do a Flash backup before you install, so if you don't like it you can always go back to your previous configuration.

It's a separate image - so it's OZ/e17

Great minds think alike, eh?  I made this theme about a year ago and always wanted to post it somewhere.  It was inspired by a Mac OS 8 theme from mmhart.com.

Sweet looking screenshots, Cresho.
Btw, you ever get that steel theme for the 5500 available?

(Dear Santa,
I would like a more affordable SL-C1000 for Xmas.
I've been very good this year.
Your buddy,
Psion)

i just finished the mokey one........

and started now on the steel one.  the steel is gona be done first for the c series and ported over the the sl series....

hmmm..

maybee not.  I found the folder.  Its almost done.  I put it aside to complete the gant for the c series.  Now i am working on the sl steel theme.  I am debating on the background though since silver is hard to look at with certain wallpapers.

Got a screenshot of your steel theme?  Maybe we can get some input for a suitable background.

BTW: I noticed on your site a screenshot of the Gant icons that appears to be on an SL-series, however you only have icons for the C-series.  Or can these icons be used on the SL-series?

Thanks for all the hard work.

Here's my CL-750 with pdaXrom & fvwm. I'm using Zumi's scripts for switching from landscape to portrait with a modified fvwm config from Jefklak (http://jefklak.suidzer0.org/) The icon on the desktop in the 2nd screen shot is an iconified screenshot representing a minimized window -> Midnight Commander running in mrxvt. The thumb-nailing process is a bit slow (~2 sec pause after minimize button is clicked) but I like the effect.
