Title: streaming to the Z with VLC.
Post by: pgas on November 06, 2004, 04:49:14 am: If you have a desktop pc powerfull enough, you can stream real time transcoded video to you Z
using vlc (http://www.videolan.org/).

Go to open file (advanced), chose your file,
click on output check box and in parameters
choose click http and put the ip of your pc (ie 192.168.0.1)
choose MPEG 1,
mp1V for video codec, 512 kbps, scale 1
mp2a 96 kbps

then on your Z use your mplayer favorite options (I think -framedrop is a must,

and open http://192.168.0.1:1234 (http://192.168.0.1:1234).

I choose mpge1 as I think its decompression is less cpu intensive, with
the above options video (a cartoon) was watchable, try by yourself there are lots of other choices

You can also stream a DVD an watch it on your Z this way

Anyway maybe some will find this usefull.

Unfortunately my version of vls under Debian Unstable didn't come with a configuration GUI and I can't figure out how to get those options you mentioned into a vls.cfg file. Are you able to post your vls.cfg file?

I think these days vlc offers more streaming possibilities than vls...
(though i didn't check vls since a long time)

Ahhh now I get it! I'd never used VLC before so just assumed I need the server to stream files to my Zaurus. I just tried it using your instructions and it worked perfectly. Thanks again!

I tried your thing, pgas, it kinc of works, but i have a few questions :

1) I segfault everytime i try to use anyother audio codec than mpga, i crash or just can play (only the video) after i stopped vlc on my linux box. What library does mp2a depend on ?

UPDATE : i segfault only when i try to reduce the number of channels to 1. Playing the video with mpa is impossible : i can hear the sound, but i can't watch the video unless i use a very low bitrate, but then, it's only 5fps. mpa seems to be much too high cpu consuming. I need mp2a !!!

2) Is a usb connection fast enough for that kind of transfer ? I think it is, but i'm not sure. What connection do you use ?

2) I think the rate with usb is something like 1Mb but with the overhead of the tcp/ip stack it can be less

That runs soooooooo great !!!!!!! A usb port of mine is nearly dead... it came from that !!!

So, i use

MPEG PS
video : mp1v | 512kbps | scale 0.5 |
audio : mpga | 128 kbps | 2 channels |

and same as pgas for all the rest...

And in order to celebrate lord pgas, i'm streaming Saint Seiya Hades to my zaurus !!!!

To watch streaming movies on the Z one can use VLC to stream to the Z, but also easy'er is to use a web server. Mplayer can stream through http. Just remember if you go throug firewall to export http_proxy=http://your.firewall.ip:port before you start mplayer.
