I'm a little dense, but what exactly needs to be done to point to fluxbox in .xinitrc?

Comment out the line that runs openbox and replace with one that runs fluxbox instead.

Try "fluxbox-generate_menu"...

Is there a screenshot of this?  This is so cool.  I'm a gentoo-fluxbox user and these new wms are making me drool.  I'm waiting for the rest of the kde pim pi to be ported before I can even think of going pdaxrom.

Fluxbox rocks... I just finished compiling vdesk and torsmo, and the look is awesome. I will post a screenshot when my battery is fully charged again.

There is only 1 problem: the CTRL-key doesn't work good, I have to press both SHIFT and CTRL to make the CTRL key work. Any idea?

Thanks for Fluxbox. I am partial to its approach of generating a menu where you point when you need it rather than always losing screen space to a panel. It's working well. The generate-menu feature finds a lot of apps and saves time though most will want more customization.

To try it out without editing .xinitrc, you can simply run startx with the path to fluxbox as an option:

Code: [Select]
startx /usr/local/bin/fluxbox

The japanese key between Fn and Space, closer to Space, works as the Control key for me, but I haven't tried it in many applications yet.

I've been pimpin' my desktop in my free time, but i've not tried fluxbox

am currently using ROX + XFCE

(sorry for my poor english )

Edit:
i forgot: the taskbar shown in your screenshot is really cute!  i use xfce's taskbar, but it's kinnda ugly.

does that taskbar supports notification area (or whatever that's called)?

THANK YOU!
It's beautiful!!!

However, my function key doesn't work*.  xev shows it as an alt key, same as the ones with the Japanese characters.  Is this just something in a config file that I can fix?  I have all sorts of wonderful plans for the fluxbox keys file, but I need this to work first.

*Doesn't work: keypresses are read as normal even with function key pressed.

how about including a battery indicator.
does the ~/.fluxbox/keys work as well as the desktop version
are there keycodes for the jogdial and ok/cancel buttons

I use fluxbox as my windowmanager in linux, nice to see that I can use it in the zaurus too.

Hi bastichelaar

i've installed the packages you've given in the first post (fluxbox and the theme). then i've backed up my .xinitrc and created a new one that only contains "exec /usr/local/bin/fluxbox"

then i start X by using "startx" and the fluxbox taskbar appears, but not the desktop, so I just can see that gray-grid background from the X server

What should i tweak to get the fluxbox desktop or set the background?

there's a script called "fbsetbg" in your fluxbox ipk. i figured out it was for setting the background, so i gave a try this way:

Code: [Select]
fbsetbg -f /path/to/my/background/image
but then appears an xmessage that says it can't find an app to set the wallpaper with, and suggests me to install Eterm. No wallpaper is set

any hint?

thanks

Jenn:

Go to this url: http://www.dangerz.net/dz/xinitrc (http://www.dangerz.net/dz/xinitrc)

If you want, you can wget that from your Zaurus.  Use that as your .xinitrc and that'll should everything for fluxbox.  Comment out the trosmo and vdesk lines tho if you dont have/use them.

For those whose function key also may not work,

Code: [Select]
xmodmap /etc/X11/kb/corgi.xmodmap
Solved my problem perfectly, thanks dz!

thanks dz! but still no background image, neither a way to set it

Changing system styles works fine, but when i change to the only one user style that is present, the wallpaper does not appear. where in the theme config file is defined that image?  is it possible to define a wallpaper anywhere in the fluxbox menus? does fbsetbg actually work? yeah, i know, RTFM

i'm getting the same no background problem as you

and when I launch aterm, it launches in a transparent window (which is nice) but the shape is all messed up, tall and narrow instead of like a box

Jenn:

Make sure you have the following libraries:

imlib 1.9.15
tiff 3.6.1
libungif 4.1.3

wget http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/imlib_1.9.15_armv5tel.ipk (http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/imlib_1.9.15_armv5tel.ipk)
wget http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/tiff_3.6.1_armv5tel.ipk (http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/tiff_3.6.1_armv5tel.ipk)
wget http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/libungif_4.1.3_armv5tel.ipk (http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/libungif_4.1.3_armv5tel.ipk)

Install those and that should fix it.

jenn - dz helped me out... apparently I was missing a few libs (due to feed not working correctly, I had to wget and install ipks one at a time).

just install the following and it should work:

libungif_4.1.3_armv5tel.ipk (http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/libungif_4.1.3_armv5tel.ipk)
imlib_1.9.15_armv5tel.ipk (http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/imlib_1.9.15_armv5tel.ipk)
tiff_3.6.1_armv5tel.ipk (http://www.pdaxrom.org/unstable/tiff_3.6.1_armv5tel.ipk)

For the background I use Esetroot, downloadable at my website. fbsetbg calls to Esetroot or any other background setter.

have you run fluxbox-generate_menu yet?

after that, there is a file in ~/.fluxbox called 'menu'.. edit that

bastichelaar,

just curious... since you originally posted FVWM, i have been using that and find it an extremely good window manager.  very flexible and configurable.

how is fluxbox better?  after tweaking FVWM for a while, why would i (or you) switch?

after playing 2 hrs fluxbox (first time )
the toolbar and menu are bit small for Zaurus

i always click the wrong thing

is there any way to make it larger? for easy access?

i ran 'pmonobut' and 'mb-applet-volume'
both work fine

but again.... too small for the toolbar

anyways
it's a great Window Manager

Sorry for crossposting, but I figured this question would be better placed here:

Is this version of Fluxbox supposed to work with RC5? Because I'm getting the following error: "fluxbox: relocation error: fluxbox: symbol __floatsisf, version GCC_3.0 not defined in file libgcc_s.so.1 with link time reference".

Quite a mouth full

Anyway, it looks as if either it expects a different libgcc version, or it's compiled with a different float setting (which changed between RC5 and the previous version). Or is this just a matter of upgrading a package?

Any help is appreciated.

i grab it off from unstable feed

For setting the height of the bar:
edit /home/root/.fluxbox/init
find the line :

session.screen0.toolbar.height: 16

and change the 16 to something like 24 or 32 and reload the config or restart X

For getting the menu to popup with the menu key
edit /home/root/.fluxbox/keys
and add a line:

None XF86Start :RootMenu

and reload the config or restart X

The pb is that the menu appears under the mouse cursor, a nice hack to fluxbox could be to make the menu always appear at 0,0 instead. I think it will be more usable this way.

Add belows to /home/root/.fluxbox/keys and restart X

Code: [Select]
None XF86RotateWindows :exec chkhinge

Before editing, check this.

Code: [Select]
xmodmap /etc/X11/kb/corgi.xmodmap
If you want rotation manually, just 'chkhinge' in terminal.

Hi there,

i just installed fluxbox with vdesk and torsmo.
Fluxbox runs, torsmo the same, but vdesk seems
not to function. I can´t drag&drop folders or files
on the desktop, which is annoying!

Furthermore i didn´t find where to add "$battery"
so that torsmo also shows the battery-status.

Any hint/tip would help me...

Thx in advance,
Nico
