Title: ANN: Mplayer 1.0pre5
Post by: bastichelaar on November 08, 2004, 02:12:58 pm
MPlayer is a movie player for Linux (runs on many other Unices, and non-x86 CPUs, see the documentation). It plays most MPEG, VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, FLI, RM, NuppelVideo, YUV4MPEG, FILM, RoQ, PVA files, supported by many native, XAnim, and Win32 DLL codecs. You can watch VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, DivX 3/4/5 and even WMV movies, too (without the avifile library).

What advantages does this version offer?  I'd really like to be able to listen to real audio streams with mplayer, I wonder if this new version can do that.

Have you tried enabling the GUI? It would be really nice for pdaxrom to have the GUI-enabled mplayer, along with some default skin and everything else already set up to be instantly usable without any command line at all.

AFAIK real, quicktime  are played back through the binary windows dll ie native code for i386, so unless
an open source codec is written (unlikely, and there may be licensing problems) or real or apple provides lib for arm I would say that the chance to play these file on the Z are 0.

I really don't know what the advantages are, I only tried to compile against the AtiCore library. Maybe I will update this package with a gui or something...

how do we find ipks and downloads on your website?

http://zaurus.xerys.nl/ (http://zaurus.xerys.nl/)

main page seems like it hasn't been updated since august 17th...

download/ipk shows like 3 programs... daliclock, etc.

do you have any large[r] screenshots?

His mplayer ipk & fluxbox theme is in the unstable feed @ pdaxrom.org. Looks like he's been too busy compiling aps to update his website

At my website you will find an updated version.

New features:

- GUI
- you can change the volume now with the "*" and "/", just add "-af volume" to the startup line...

New MPlayer looks pretty promising!
But I discovered I can no longer playback vorbis music wrapped in ogg container.
I'm wondering if this release would require me to specify something explicitly, or maybe ogg/vorbis support is just not compiled in ?

I had a couple of problems installing this package but that was due to bugs in the CONTROL/control file (please remove the spaces from the end of the lines, and add the dependcy to libungif ).  I also had trouble with mplayer not finding its font, but I fixed that by creating a symlink:
Code: [Select]
ln -s /share/mplayer/font/font-arial-iso-8859-1/font-arial-18-iso-8859-1 ~/.mplayer/fontIs there a reason why the fonts and skins are installed in /share rather than /usr/share?

The ability to change the volume is great but is there a way to rebind the keys so I can use / and . rather than / and *?

Is it just me or does the gmplayer GUI make playback unbearably slow?

BTW, is it compiled for 1.1.0 RC5? Or just 1.0.5?

i guess it must be for RC5 only as compilation process has changed, but it needs confirmation

Don't know, I compiled it using the latest SDK.

just a point: you said quicktime videos should be played through win32 dll... that's not true, since we can actually play them with mplayer on pdaxrom.

i tried this 1pre5 on my 750 rc5.

I have a few pb

while i could play some files (divx3/mp3/25fps) of mine quite well with the mplayer version installed by default in rc5, i can't play them smoothly anymore... When i use the xrandr trick, the video gets stuck on what i guess is a key frame. Yet, i can use fast foward, and sometimes it plays some frames, but then once again gets stuck to the next key frame...

This pb doesn't occure without switching the resolution in X, but in this case, even when using the -framedrop switch, the video displays something like 5 fps...

Outside of X, no way to play the video, only the audio part plays... It complains about not being able to open display   (bis)

I'm considering downgrading as the only solution for now, as it worked not perfectly but better than this before i tried an update

Any idea ?

Hey, mplayer 1.0pre5 use mp3lib to decode mp3 streams. You can use ffmpeg or libmad library to decode your audio.

To use ffmpeg, add "-ac ffmpg2" option. Use "-ac mad" for libmad. Both codec can play video smoothly and mad seems use less CPU.

Hi bastichelaar,

Thanks for mplayer 1.0. It works fine for me. However, it will be better if it is compiled to include SDL video output (i.e., -vo sdl) to play video in console mode and ESD audio output (i.e., -ao esd) to here the sound raised by other programs such as gaim while I am watching video in X windows.  Thanks.

Edit: Oh... I need fbdev as well. The existing -vo cannot play the video and sound in sync.
