Title: SL-C3000 Support?
Post by: ZeeUser on November 11, 2004, 01:14:31 pm
I will be receiving a C3000 from Conics.net in a few days, and would like to dump the Sharp ROM ASAP. I know that most of these issues will require research and testing on an actual unit, but I want to get an idea now of how difficult the porting process will be. I will, of course, help out in any way I can (non-technical user).

Potential Issues:
-C3000 has 16MB Flash ROM, versus the 64 or 128MB in other C-series Zauri.  The 4GB Microdrive is designed to take the place of the user memory (storage), but it is not yet known if any of the OS files reside on the HDD.
-C3000 uses the Intel 2700G (http://www.intel.com/design/pca/prodbref/300571.htm) graphics chipset (unconfirmed); other C-series Zauri use the ATI Imageon 100
-C3000 has USB Host capability, not present on other C-series Zauri.

We have not yet got our hands on C3000 :-(

Does the team absolutely need a SL-C3000 in order to port pdaXrom to it? I know it would be more difficult, but could you not just work with the C3000 owners?

I suppose the C3000 early adopters might be willing to pitch in to buy a C3000 for the pdaXrom team, but that would take a while (the C3000 is not well received by most on these forums)

"Of course" we don't need it - but if you have a "toy" your more likely to be interested in it :-)

I see your point  ;-)
Well, then, could you set up a "buy the pdaXrom team a C3000" fund on the main page of the pdaXrom site?

Or maybe the regular donat-o-meter could "overflow" to a "x $ to buy a C3000" in one of the months.
(Gosh, I want a C3000... =)

Just in case anyone missed it there's a thread in the general discussion area with this link:

I'm very interested in this picture:

If they can replace the microdrive with a CF card, then I would assume it would be possible to put in a (modified) CF wifi card.  Add a 2GB SD card, and a 5GB microdrive, and you've got a wireless Z with 7GB of storage!
what wifi card do you know of that could fit (or be modified to fit)?

@ Xumbi

(at the risk of the continued hijacking of my own thread   :-P    )
There is also the matter of the antenna on the WiFi card. I would expect that it would cause some major interference to the circuitry of the Zaurus and/or vice versa. IMO, a much better solution would be to strip down/hack a USB WiFi adapter to fit in a smaller enclosure and plug directly into the mini-USB port of the Zaurus.

My socket cf wifi card is pretty small.  I'm not that electronically savvy, but I bet someone could get it to work by taking it apart and making it fit.

Also, in case anyone missed it, there was another thread confirming that the 3000 has usb host support.

@ Xumbi

I am sure the circuit board of most (if not all) WiFi cards runs the whole length of the card. Even if the casing was taken off, you would still have a circuit board that is too long to fit in the internal Microdrive slot. Someone would have to basically desolder the chips from the board, design and build a shorter board, and solder to chips to it.  Even if an individual was capable of the design part, most would not own or have access to the specialized equipment and resources needed to build that complex of a circiut board from scratch. I remember reading an article in PC Magazine about a company that offers such services, but the cost of building just a few boards would probably be prohibitively expensive.

My idea for the USB WiFi adapter would add bulk, but it would solve most user's complaint of having a WiFi card extending beyond the CF slot and making the unit difficult to hold.

USB wifi sounds like a good all around solution, I hope someone gets it to work.

Does anyone have any details of how other handhelds have solved these problems (i.e. size and antenna)??

What about the 6000L?  Has anyone looked inside one?  I wonder if they used the same trick for this (i.e. using the second CF port).  If so, maybe the "internal" cards are already available somewhere (maybe even from Sharp themselves as replacement parts)?  How did Sharp handle the antenna problem in the 6000L?

The 6000L actually registers the wireless as part of the usb host as opposed to the secondary CF slot. The secondary CF slot may be used by plugging in the expansion adapter.

Laze:
Could you please clarify your position on pdaXrom support for the C3000? Will you set up a fund for the purchase of a C3000 for the pdaXrom team?

I now have a C3000, and am williing to provide any information and perform any testing  needed to help port pdaXrom to the C3000 (within my capbilities and while keeping my Zaurus reasonably safe from being bricked)

We are currently working on making the pdaXrom as compatible as possible - we are currently looking into making a C3000 fund - but hopefully it won't be nesseary. I will maybe contact you later.

By the way, I want pdaXrom on the C3000 because it is one of the major reasons I decided not to abandon the Zaurus altogether and switch to the OQO. I would not be bugging you about this if I did not think that pdaXrom and the pdaXrom team are awesome

It has been mooted in other threads on this forum - https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...?showtopic=8602 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=8602) - and I just think that we, as a community, should make available C3000’s to each of the ROM developers.

Failing which then I feel it very unfair that we should be requesting software to be produced. How can we hope that Cacko, pdaXrom etc. be developed if the hardware is not in their hands?

Having said that, I would prefer that such a gesture is made in the spirit of appreciation of what has been done for us to date and not to imply any future obligation on the developers’ part.

The other option is for us to simply make direct donations and if they choose to buy a C3000 for themselves then they will.

Thinking about this, I am inclined to prefer the latter option as it fulfils the criteria of donation without obligation.  This work which benefits us all has been done freely and I just feel that our appreciation should be shown equally as freely.

You probably all know this already but the direct donation links are

pdaXrom: http://www.pdaxrom.org/ (http://www.pdaxrom.org/)
Cacko: http://www.my-zaurus.narod.ru/cacko.html (http://www.my-zaurus.narod.ru/cacko.html)

Sorry if the tone appears presumptuous, I realise now that I have used this thread to help me clarify my own thoughts but I shall post it anyway in case it is appropriate.

I shall wait a day or so to see what responses there is to this topic and, all else failing, shall make equal donations to Cacko and pdaXrom.

rebski,

Actually, I and a few others made a contribution a while ago to Maslovsky for the C3000 version Cacko ROM. This was noted in the Cacko ROM forum section and was acknowledged by Maslovsky.

So if you're interested in the C3000 version Cacko ROM, please PayPal Maslovsky whatever you can (I and others did $20 each) and then post that you did it (for the C3000 versio) in the Cacko ROM forum section.

The same offer (see pdaXrom forum section posts) was made to Laze for the pdaXrom and at that time, he said not to worry about contributing.

Hope this helps clarify things....

Mark

Thanks ArchiMark,

I was already aware that you had made donations, it is just that on the same thread there was another suggestion to actually buy C3000s and hand them over and I wasn’t sure what to do for the best. I emailed the individual who offered to act as agent asking for an update but didn’t get a reply

So I shall stop dithering, follow your example and make equal donations to Sash and Maslovsky.

Now I just need to get myself a C3000 to replace my 5500 which has gone missing presumed stolen.

My condolences on your 5500, but think of it as an opportunity!

You'll really like the C3000, they're great!

Having had a 5500, C760, and C860, I can tell you the clamshell series are the best IMHO....

Also, glad to hear you'll support the ROM developers, hopefully that'll help speed things up for all of us with C3000's...

BTW, glad to answer any questions I can about C3000, etc if I can be of help....

I just bought a C3000 for christmas, as an upgrade to my sl5500. I love my 5500, and I am very pleased with the c3000. However, as of now I consider my c3k to be little more than a fancy mp3 player, and a nice paperweight. The sharp rom is useless. Until cacko, pdaXrom, and OZ developers get these things in their hands so they can do what they do best, it will remain so. Everyone appreciates what these guys do, and I know they do it purely for the pleasure of the accomplishment. I personally know how rewarding it can be to know that you turned your ideas into a useable solution to everyone's problems. These guys are personally responsible for turning a bunch of glorified calculators into fully functional pocket sized linux boxen! If we can all afford $600+ to enhance our nerdery then surely we can afford the relatively small amount necessary from each person to create a donation pot large enough to purchase at least one shiny new zaurus.  I'd be happy to donate a little cash, and let me once again beg and grovel to thee oh mighty overlords of the zaurii. May caffeine rain down on you from the heavens as you struggle ever so valiantly to restore our c3000s to their proper glory.

Does OZ/OE work on the 3000?

It's not pdaX, it's not perfect -- but I'd take it over the sharp rom in a heartbeat.
OZ makes my 5600 useful.  You can run zdebian, etc... so the 3000 is useful,
even if your preferred rom isn't available for it yet.

Scott
ps: hell, even with sharp, if that was the only choice, I'd run zdebian! That alone
makes the Z worth it.

There was a post about this today on mobilenews.ne.jp; it seems someone has created a package of pdaxrom (rc8) for the C3000: available here (http://www.piro.hopto.org/~piro/zaunikki/pukiwiki.php?cmd=read&page=%5B%5B%A4%B6%A4%A6%C6%FC%B5%AD%2F2005-04-09%5D%5D)

The packager notes, however, that this should be considered EXPERIMENTAL. Also, it seems that the packager had problems getting some of the softfloat things to compile, so the package may not be 100% complete.

The installation looks simple:
1. format a CF card to ext3, then extract the archive to the card. (apparently it can be installed on hdd3 as well, though I personally wouldn't recommend it).
2. replace /sbin/init with the provided init file (must mount / as rw to do so). The new init will provide a menu for choosing which ROM to boot.

Again note that this is experimental. I have not tested this personally (I don't have a C3000). Use at your own risk.

Short notes from my attempt this morning:

It didn't seem work off an SD card, and one of the special kernels (to get the full booting up sequence) is necessary as I couldn't even see what was wrong.

- Just tossing my in two bits ... pdaXrom looks enticing, to say the least, but until I got a C1000, it didn't seem viable.  The 5500 just doesn't have the keyboard, display, processor power, or memory to do X right, imho.
- But now that I do have a C1000, I eagerly await the ability to give this a spin.  Until then, while everyone complains about the Sharp ROM, I find it usable.  Sorta like a Metro is usable transportation (guffaw)...
