On the calendar on the cacko rom (1.21b) there are what looks like little pinned notes on some of the days. I haven't figured out what these correspond to. They don't seem to relate to the todo items, as days with todo items sometimes have the little notes and sometimes don't.
Any ideas?

I think, what you are describing is the document journal.
This essentially replaces the document tab that you used to get on the old Sharp ROM.
Select the day that has the note, go to day view and you will see a three card index view, The Appointment card is at the front (Alarm Clock Icon), the Alarm Summary is next (Single Document Icon) and the Journal is the last tab (Multiple Document Icon).
Select the Journal tab and it will show documents written on that day.
Was this what you were seeing ?

If you are talking about the "pinned" notes that appear in Month view of the Sharp Calendar, then they are new files that were created that day. Any files in /home/zaurus/Desktop, /mnt/card/Desktop (SD Card) or /mnt/cf/Desktop (CF Card) will apear on the Calendar month view as a Pin (possibly useful if you are creating docs on the Z at a rate of only a couple a week, but damm annoying if you copy a large number of ipks for installation.
The reeaalllyyy annoyying thing however is that for Calendar view to work, it must have read access to all files and directories in the above mentioned places. If it can't read a directory then the Calendar crashes when changing to Month View.

....OK well that's another way of putting it.

Just to add to what Stubear told you: you can turn off the pinned notes for files located on the SD & CF cards (but not RAM) by going to Calendar > Options > Link File and removing the checkmark(s) next to the card(s). Helps prevent crashing
