Just got my new Z (3000) from Conics the other day!
Extremely fast shipping from Japan to California (3 days!)
Anyway, first impressions....
So far great!!
Having had a C760 & C860 not a radical change....more evolutionary refinements...
feels very much the same/familiar overall...
While not a great difference in size, it is noticeable....mainly seems a bit chunkier...but not a big deal at all.
Display and overall performance seems the same as my previous Z's...
However, wish Sharp could have made the display a tad larger. Would have been a nice touch.
Really like the new keyboard, new keys , and 'navigation ring' (cursor keys).
Separating the On/Off button from the 'OK' & 'Cancel' buttons is a good idea as I used to often hit the wrong one on my old 'Z''s....
The new USB sync cable is good too.
It's nice knowing that I have lots of storage space onboard.
Bottomline for me....
GREAT 'little Z' in the tradition of the earlier 'Z''s,
feels a bit more refined if a bit more chunkier...
However, it also feels (physically) more substantial somehow...
More mini-laptop/TabletPC than a PDA...
However, if you've got a C760 or C860 and happy with it, probably no compelling reason to upgrade unless you want/need really large storage built-in or you just want to have the 'latest and greatest'...
But just my 2 cents.....however, YMMV....

Hi Archimark,
Did Conics do the English conversion for you?
Have you tried any peripherals yet like Wifi, Bluetooth?
Other 3000 users:
Has anyone bought from www.pricejapan.com? If so, what was their reliability and delivery time like?
Thanks!
J.
Prospective 3k buyer.

Hi Bombur,
No, I did conversion..
It's real easy if you download 'mcconvert' file from Conics.
Just put it on a SD or CF card, insert in Z, double tap on file, install, and reboot Z!
Done!
As for BT, haven't tried it...
Have WiFi card, haven't tried it on 3000, but worked fine on C860...
Did use my Socket Ethernet card today and worked first time....
Can vouch for Conics, have made quite a few purchases and always had good experience.
HTH,

Archimark:
All of your thoughts on the C3000 eerily mirror mine... Now I don't have to do a review!
I will post some of my observations later after my girlfriend releases me from creating a gift (wedding) registry with her
Bombur:
Conics will convert the C3000 to English only if specifically requested. In other words, they won't ask (well, they did not ask me). However, the conversion is so easy for even a Linux/Zaurus newbie to do that it really makes no difference either way.
Any CompactFlash peripherals that worked on the previous C-series Zauri should work with the C3000. If you were refering to USB peripherals: I personally have not yet gotten a chance to test the USB Host functionality. I will be looking for the proper cable tomorrow, and will report my results here after I have had a chance to perform some testing. I do not expect much at this point, though, because Conics.net reported that the Sharp ROM currently does not support the USB Host functions.

Just bought an SL-C3000 today at Bic Camera in downtown Tokyo. The battery is charging up now. Price was Yen 79,800. Although I have owned computers since the early 1970s this is my first PDA.
-
Wow, 7J1AIL, since the early 70's!!
That predates me...
I got my first computer (Amiga) back in '87....
Must been a real speedster....
Anyway, welcome to 'ZLand'!
Hope you have fun with your 3000....
Great way to start....
Let us know if you have ?'s

Well, here's my first newbie question -- how do I find the unit's MAC address?
I want to register it on my WLAN.

Prospective 3k buyer.
I have a wificard (asus) but didn't tried it yet (worked with my 860, so i'm sure it will work).
I bought from PriceJapan (to france) , because Kaneda(Sales director) was the cheapest (80000 yens with insurance, fee, transport (EMS) ...)
sent on 11/11, arrived 11/15 on the morning.
Very good work.

Well, here's my first newbie question -- how do I find the unit's MAC address?
I want to register it on my WLAN.
MAC address means that you have a Network Device.
if you have a clamshell, you don't have MAC address :
For example, I have a CF Wifi card, and the MAC address is written on it, not on the Device.

Well, here's my first newbie question -- how do I find the unit's MAC address?
I want to register it on my WLAN.
I got all my wireless card mac addresses by using the admin interface on my access point. Basically, I turned off the function which prevents unknown mac addresses connecting, connected my new card and then queried the AP for a list of connected mac addresses. I have a D-Link access point but I suspect most APs have such a function.
-
ifconfig will also show your HWAddr - which is the MAC address of the card...
-
Yep, I figured it out when I got to the Network Setting menu and it grabbed the MAC address off the Buffalo flash card I presume. After some monkeying around I got it to connect to my D-Link 900AP+. However, it does not seem to like WEP. That might be a problem on the AP side. I do have the AP set up to only accept certain MAC addresses so I have a bit of security.

I have the agree with the rest the C3000 is a wonderful little device. Unfortunately, this is my first Zaurus so I can't really compare it with the older models. In the near future (hopefully) I want to see if I can get a BSD on the C3000. For the curious, I purchased my Zaurus from www.lolzer.com.

(gift-registry thing put me to sleep last night)
My C3000 First-Impressions/Observations (Hardware Only)
Audio: The speaker in the C3000 beats the C760's in both maximum volume and audio quality. I'm sure it helps that Sharp put a speaker grill in the C3000, instead of hiding the speaker somewhere in the unit like they did with the previous C-series.
Interesting fact: When the C3000's volume is turned up to the max, vibrations can be felt in the base of the unit.
Keyboard: The keys of the C3000 do not have quite as audible of a "click" as the C760's. IMO, this is a good thing; all that clicking on the C760's keyboard annoyed me greatly. The keyboard framework of the C3000 is solid, whereas the C760 keyboard would flex when a key was pressed, especially around the edges. Also, the keys on C3000's keyboard are softer, so it seems less tiring to type on.
Build Quality: The C3000 retains the excellent build quality of the previous Zauri and improves on it. The metal hinge of the C3000 should provide better structural integrity than the previous C-series. The C3000 does away with the space-wasting large-battery cover of the previous C-series; now the base of the unit is one piece (except for the small battery cover). My only complaint is that the battery cover flexes and creaks when pressure is applied.
Accessories:
-The included USB sync cable is a standard USB Mini-A to full-size A adapter that you can now find in any electronics store.
-The EA-BL11 battery included with the C3000 is 1800mAh; the large-battery included with the C760/C860 is 1700mAh. Both batteries are electrically and physically compatible (tested by switching batteries between C3000 and C760)
-The C3000 comes with both a plastic CF and SD card insert to protect those slots when not in use.
-The included plastic stylus feels cheap and light. Do yourself a favor and pick up some metal replacements.
-The included EA-72 100V AC adapter is the same as those used with the previous C-series Zauri
Other Observations:
-The IR port, having been moved to the left side of the unit, will either be a help or a hinderance, depending on the position of the IR port on the devices you need the C3000 to communicate with. This works perfectly with my Nokia 6230 because I can now position the 6230 to the left of the Zaurus so that it is facing me (IR port is on the right side of phone)
-The email light of the previous C-series has been turned into an HDD indicator light. I find it facinating for there to be such a thing on a "PDA", and it is mesmerizing to watch! There is an option to revert the HDD light to an email indicator, though.
-The I/O port's cover is not easily taken off; there is only a small hole through which a paper clip must be inserted and pried out. I seems as if Sharp does not want the user to open it. I have not tested the I/O port of the C3000, and will not do so until I can be sure that it will cause no damage.
-The LCD position sensor is now below the hinge. Therefore, the screen will switch to portrait only when the LCD is fully rotated and locked into place.

Does someone who has one of these things want to comment on the new Japanese dictionaries? They are of great intrest to a student of Japanese like myself. Thank you.
-
I haven't used the new dictionaries that much yet, but a few points I noticed (as compared to the Cx60 models' sljisho and dictionaries):
- The new dictionary program, zdict, feels very similar to zten.
- As with zten, search options include exact, start of word, and end of word; there are other search modes, such as 'combine' and 'multi', though I have yet to mess with them.
- Some entries provide links to other entries.
- Zdict has an option to bookmark entries.
- Other dictionaries can be added (zdict uses the same format as zten uses).
- Zdict seems _slower_ than sljisho; when switching entries, a 'Please Wait' dialog is flashed on the screen. Granted, though, the new dictionaries provide a lot more information than the old ones.
- The kojien dictionary has entries for individual kanji, which includes stroke order diagrams, explanations (Japanese-only), and sample compounds.
- Sljisho provides separate tabs for Japanese-Japanese, Japanese-English, English-Japanese, and Katakana, making it easy to track down the definition that you want (especially when you type in a Japanese word and want an English definition); zdict does not provide such functionality (the closest you can get would be to go to the settings and uncheck the Kojien dictionaries, leaving only the Genius dictionary for searches).[/li]
Overall I think that zdict and the new dictionaries are nice, but I still plan to continue to use a combination of programs, including sljisho.

Thank you very much for the explanation. I'm going to be studying abroad at Waseda next year and need some kind of electronic dictonary. It sounds like a C-3000 Zaurus loaded with Zdict and sljisho is a better value than buying a seperate $350 denshi jisho. Plus it has Kanji handwriting input.
-
Ashikaze, you mentioned that zdict uses the same format as Zten.
Does this mean the 3000's dictionary files will work on a C860 running Zten?
-
Does this mean the 3000's dictionary files will work on a C860 running Zten?
Yes and no. The C3000 dictionary files seem to contain some sort of security measures (encryption?). The files will not work with the current release of zten.
However, it's possible to make it work by recompiling zten and linking it with the libraries libeb.so.3.3.4 and zsecurefile.so.1.1.0 from the C3k.
Note also that the C3000's zdict can run on older models, but requires a newer version of libsl (Sharp's library). This file cannot be simply copied over the old libsl as it will break other programs (such as the Add/Remove Software app). Instead, you would have to run zdict with a (bash) command like "LD_PRELOAD=/path/to/libsl.c3k.version zdict".
Of course, doing any of this without actually owning a C3000 is probably not exactly legal.

Thanks for the information ashikase.
I was hoping for Sharp to sell the multimedia dictionary app as a standalone package (like they did with Picsel Viewer). I tried the 3000 (at Biccamera Shinjuku)and really liked the new dictionary. From your explanation, it seems quite unlikely that they will. What a pity.

rokugo:
I believe that the Genius and/or Koujiten dictionaries can be bought separately on SD, though I don't know if they are the same versions as those available on the C3000, and, if I remember correctly, they are rather expensive (over 10,000 yen).
As for the dictionary program itself, Sharp released the source code for zdict today. You can download it at: http://developer.ezaurus.com/sl_j/source/source_dl.htm (http://developer.ezaurus.com/sl_j/source/source_dl.htm)
Note that you will probably still need libraries from the C3k to compile it (libeb, libzsecure, libsl, ...).

thanks again ashikase.
yes, I did try searching for similar EPWing-format dictionary packages. The closest match to the C3000 set seems to be this one:
http://store.nifty.com/goods/goods.aspx?goods=00801FMW1433 (http://store.nifty.com/goods/goods.aspx?goods=00801FMW1433)
But after going thru some reviews off the net and getting my sensei's recommendation, I bought this Daijirin package instead (which also happens to be cheaper) : http://www.sanseido-publ.co.jp/publ/ep/cd_ep_daijirin.html (http://www.sanseido-publ.co.jp/publ/ep/cd_ep_daijirin.html)
As for compiling Zdict for use on the C860, I'm afraid thats way over my head
