Post by: Momo9394 on November 22, 2004, 08:04:12 pm
Hello,

I bought this unit on a whim to learn more about the Linux os.  I have no developer experience but am relatively tech savvy.  I would like to get advice from you experts out there ona few general topcis:

1) How do I synch this unit with Outlook 2003 runnign Windows XP?
2) What are the best sources for 3rd party apps?
3) I have a Buffalo wireless CF card.  Does anyone know how to configure it with this device?
4) The OS is english but I hear there are some really good OS out there that can be loaded.  Does anyone have a recommendation on the best English version out there?
5) I woudl liek to get my e-mail set up ont his device through a POP3 account.  can someone help me walk through this?  Similarly, how do I get web browsing set up on thsi device?

Any advice would be welcome!  Thanks.

1. Sorry, don't do windows.
2. Zaurus software index here (http://killefiz.de/zaurus) has an extensive list of available apps.
3. Don't know about the Buffalo. Isn't it working out of the box? Most wifi cards do.
4. I am not sure if the alternative roms (for the c860 cacko and pdaXrom) have been tested/ported to the C3000 yet. It will be announced in the ZUG once it happens.
5. I don't use the mail app (I use ssh) so I don't know, but try starting it and it might prompt you for the relevant information. As for web browsing, if you are online, just start the browser (Netfront).

Congratulations on your new Z and welcome to this forum.

I don't have a 3000 (I have a SL-C860), but I'll try to help as best I can. Others can chime in.

#2. Go to http://killefiz.de/zaurus/ (http://killefiz.de/zaurus/)
It's the most comprehensive site for zaurus software.

#4. I have heard that the new 3000 Zs cannot run any of the other ROMS (Cacko 1.21 or pdaXrom) because it is so new. These ROMS must be compiled for your Z. So you may be left with the original ROM until the community produces a version for the 3000.

#5. My experience with my 860 was pretty simple with browsing the web wirelessly. I had to go into the Network settings to add my wireless CF card to the list under the "Services" tab. I just tapped the "Wireless LAN Card" button and hit the "Add" button. Then it shows up on the list. Then a globe icon with a red X in it shows up on the task bar and affter tapping that, you're connected. Then launch your browser.

The Qtopia Desktop on the cd should sync with outlook. Install the drivers on the cd, and Qtopia Desktop, and attach the zaurus to the cradle/sync cable.

1. as lpopter mentioned - Qtopia desktop is the desktop component for synching with stuff on your computer.

2. www.killefiz.de/zaurus - is a great source for mostly free zaurus apps and links to other apps too.

Also handango has a Zaurus section with paid apps - some are very good.
at www.handango.com - go to the linux (or Zaurus) section.

3. Most wifi cards wrk out of the box - do a search on this forum in the peripherals section and I am sure you will get some relevant info.

4. You will have to be patient here - since the C3000  has a different processort from the older machines - hance all those new ROMs (like Cacko etc) will have to be tweaked and recompiled for the new platform - and that will be after the source for C3000 roms have been released.

5.  There should be an email client on the default ROM - which does POP3.

Go to the email app - menu -> Mail -> Account and add a new account
setup the accoutn name, SMTP server and Incomming mail settings etc and you are good to go. Be sure to put in the settings with you get from your ISP.

On the settings page - add a Wireless LAN card entry and set that as the previous poster mentioned.

Once your wifi setting is enabled and email is working, the browser is just a question of launching and going to the address bar, type in a URL and bingo...

All the best and have fun and enlightenment

I really apprecaite the guidance and advice to get me started.  Is there somewhere I can get Qtopia in English.  The CD I have is all Japanese and I can't read it.

Check the downloads section of the ZUG site....

Supposedly, you can use the English software for the SL-5500/SL-5600...However, I think it's been recommended that you still use the drivers from the SL-C3000 CD...

Mark

Congrats on your new handheld! I have an SL-6000, so I'm not sure if this applies to the 3000, but with mine, you install Qtopia Desktop on the Windows XP PC *IF* you don't have MS Outlook already installed. If you *DO* have Outlook installed, then install Intellisync instead. My instructions say that you cannot install both. Both also include installation of the necessary drivers.

Hi Mark,

I have followed the discussion thread in the forum on syncing the SL-C3000 with the english version of the driver software and Qtopia Desktop. Is it safe to conclude that syncing with the english software is not possible? I haven't read anywhere that somebody managed to get the english syncing working.

The alternative seems to be going for the syncing drivers on the SL-C3000 distribution CD, but there too the is the issue with jap fonts.

If syncing with the english software is in the mean time possible, please forward me relevant pointers.

Thanks in anticipation,
Ashu

Ashu,
why do we write manuals when nobody reads them
In the startup manual ([a href=\"http://www.trisoft.de/en_c3000howto.htm]C3000/C1000 manual[/url]) is a big
paragraph regarding the sync. This points to the
C3000/1000 Sync Step-by-Step guide (http://www.trisoft.de/download/c3000sync.zip)

Get these two documents and you should be able to
sync your Zaurus with Outlook soon.
