Title: Keep An Eye On Ebay 4 Cheap 6000l's!
Post by: neuroshock on December 01, 2004, 05:42:16 am
I counted no less than fourteen Ebay listings for SL-6000L's a few minutes ago.  While most are "Buy it Now" at around $480-$500 there is a very good chance that since the supply is so plentiful in the listings that any that happen to be No Reserve will go for exceptionally low prices.  Amazon is fairly tapped out on thier supply (less than 5 left) so if you can't get one from Amazon, Ebay might be a last chance to grab a great deal.

Happy Hunting,

Please note: I have NO connections to Ebay and do NOT have a Zaurus listed myself, this post is just a kind "heads up" to help others out.

I wouldn't put too much stock in Amazon's inventory numbers. They were at "2 Used & New" on Thursday and look, they found a box in a forgotten corner of a warehouse out in the remote reaches of cyberspace!

"New and Used" are Non-Amazon Sellers.  So number of sellers for a given item can fluctuate constantly.

It is very much like ebay except that Amazon offers certain guarantees and acts (as much better IMHO)  mediator between buyers and sellers.  There listings are not as active as Ebay becuase their commissions (Amazon's) are much  higher (to sellers).  However you tend to get  a MUCH better level of service when it comes to order/seller/buyer problems....should they occur.

Kinda get what you pay for type thing.  Given two items on Ebay and Amazon, if both had the same price/condition, I would go with Amazon as they are more reputable and safer....for both buyer and seller.  (Seller's becuase payment is done immediate through Amazon's credit card system and buyers becuase Amazon has an A-Z gaurantees)

The cost to the buyer would be the same, but the seller would pay more in commissions, which tends to atrract higher quality sellers and less problems.

Suffice to say, if you buy from either (Ebay or Amazon), you probably will be fine 99% of the time, but that 1% will be when going through Amazon will make all the difference in the world.

Just my two cents.

I just don't see the market "bottoming out" on these 6000L's in the near future.  At $379 they sold out in one day on Amazon.  I bought one and so far I'm pretty happy with it but not nuts about it.  I'm pretty confident I'll be able to dump it for at least $300 in the next few months.

I agree completely sk3tch, they are way undervalued currently.  Further I believe that after Christmas once the "flood" of 6k's being resold on Ebay from Amazon dries up that the price will stabilize at around $425-465 range or maybe even more.  This is dependant on Amazon and any other well known name brand retailer not getting more in from Sharp and dumping them at artificially low prices on the market.  I have an extra one I intend to sell in January myself.
Still even though it's postponing me getting my money back out of my extra Zaurus for a month or so it's my lowly opinion that these sales have been a great thing for our community.  It has allowed many older Zaurus owners to upgrade and has brought many new users to the Zaurus/Linux/OpenEmbedded community. Making our family bigger  and enabling our members to get great hardware at affordable prices can only be a good thing for our future.

Maybe.  I am expecting the prices for most of the Zaurii on Ebay to drop after Christmas.  Some people will get new ones as gifts but won't know what to make of them (these are great but probably not quite what the average Joe expects) and also existing Zaurii owners will receive newer models. I had been planning on waiting untill Jan and picking up a 760/860 for this reason however the $300 Amazon deal was too good to pass up.  I'm not sure how much any of this applies to the newest (6000 & C3000) though and with the 6000 being sold only to corps. I wouldn't be surprised to see their prices fluctuate quite a bit.  Interestingly enough Ebayers are still paying 400-500 (last few sold for around 425) for the 6000 and nearly 600 for the 760/860 even though pricejapan.com has them new for something like 535.

The 6000L floodwaters are still rising, with no less than 23 Zaurus 6000L's listed on Ebay at this moment.

I agree with your assessment of the older Z's, I was speaking solely about the 6k's.  I have also noticed that even regardless of the gobs of 6k's listed simultaneously they have consistently sold for $425-$460.  Ironically only auctions are selling with nobody touching the "buy it now" listings, and in at least two instances the auctions have ended up higher than the lower "buy it now" counterparts.  I've been keeping tabs on all 6k's and clamshells auction ending prices for the last two weeks and continue to do so through Christmas.
The only real change is the severe drop in 5x00 prices, I think it's possible to see sub $100 5500's post Christmas.  Even as old as they are that is just a huge bargain for what you get, I hope it draws even more Zaurus users into the fold.  Funny isn't it that Sharp abandoning the US market has prompted record numbers of new Zaurus users... and many were predicting the doom of all future community growth and development only a month or so ago!  With all the new hardware and ROM developement lately, its just a plain exciting time and looks like the greatest days of the Zaurus may now once again be in front of us rather than behind!

New record high for 6000L auction listings. As of 9:56pm Wednesday, December 8, 2004 there were 36 active listings for Sharp Zaurus SL-6000L's.

Out of the last 13 that have successfully been sold, 8 have sold for $411 or less.

It is starting to make me curious is there is another source other than Amazon pumping them out and we haven't discovered it yet.  I would have expected the high water mark to hit no later than last weekend, and at this point there is no end in sight to the ever increasing numbers being listed.

I also find it interesting that almost categorically the auctions have ended for no less than $400, and most averaging around $425 or so.  I would have expected their value to have been much more volatile regardless of the supply, the demand seems follow it perfectly.

This is a really nice test case scenario that will easily break most classroom economic statistics models.

I don't know what it means but there seem to be a lot of inexperienced Ebayers bidding these up.  It'll also be interesting to see what happens to these sellers with $400+ opening bids.  That's gotta really eat into their profits, especially when they don't sell .

yeah the @$350 5600's aren't moving at all
very weird--both the high minimum bid and the clueless bidding
is there some cult of zaurus resale value we don't know about???

Well I feel that a definite part of the issue currently is that individuals who are buying them on E-bay recognize that even at just over $400 they are still getting it cheaper than any vendor I know of currently is selling them for.

Now as to why the resale value was so high DURING the time ebay was selling them at $379 just plain baffles me.  The only thing I can imagine is that they were ppl who were unaware of Amazon's pricing or were just too lazy to search elsewhere.

Questions, questions everywhere and not a drop to think...

As it turns out the pricing thing might be that there are more savvy people on ebay who are skeptical of amazon prices representing actual hardware willing to pay more for goods that actually get delivered.

just got my delivery on the 6000L from ebay.

far better than the Amamzon reseller crap.
I was quite sceptical at first and heckled the ebar seller pestering him for emails, tracking numbers, date of delivery, tentative date of arrival etc, having once been bitten at Amazon.

But this seller took it pretty patiently I should say and indded tru to his words I get delivery in the same week.

There seem to be a whole load of 6000's on USA Ebay being sold by 'auctionsbylizzy'. He/she did not say how many they have, but there have been about 6 so far and it sounds like they aren't going to stop anytime soon. One gets listed about every week. They seem to be going for more and more each time, which is interesting.

They are ALL new, boxed, and unused!

:'( They're all too expensive for me. (plus i can't get payment to them and I can't afford to pay import tax or international shipping)

Yes, I have noticed this too. I recently saw one 6000L sell for US$750- just do an advanced search on "closed items" with a minimum price of say 200 to see the trend.

Back in December with my wife on maternity leave, I had no money at all, but I wish I'd hit the credit card and paypal because now one of those 6000Ls would be double the money - I could have bought three and now sold two and had the third one myself costing nothing.

I suppose Sharp need to sell Zaurii by the thousands to make it worthwhile, so even though they can fetch a premium price, it simply costs too much money to have an official sales channel outside Japan. I wonder how long the Olympus one will last? The Yopy seems to have never been more than vapourware!

You can buy 6000Ws (wlan + BT), Ls (wlan only) and even Ns (no wireless or BT)  from PriceJapan, but  I imagine you would almost certainly have to pay import duties :-(

Me, I'm lusting after a C3000. Just waiting for some money to come my way. Donations accepts. I'm selling my Palm T3 to get some cash together - anyone interested?

It seems the ebay'er shanetso is selling these beauties for $899...close to the original retail.  I notice this same seller put one up on amazon.com for $999.

I can just say WOW!

I've seen them sell on ebay for close to $800, so I suppose he hopes to capitalize on the impulsive nature of human geeks!

Mine just arrived at work this afternoon...so I get to go and play tomorrow!  I'm sooo excited!

I don't  think the price can remain this high too long.  Keep your eyes open!

I think the reason prople are blowing out the 6000 is simple.  Word on the street is that Sharp is doing another blowout in the next few weeks, "March?" thus the push to unload these at inflated prices, "suckers?"  Like all good tell-tales I'll share a source.

SL-6000L $549 shipping SOON (http://www.1oel.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=7651)

They're not shipping yet but I'm seeing more of these pop out of nowhere fast, 2/14/05. Tempting  ..
