Title: Sl-6000l On Amazon For $300 Right Now!
Post by: neuroshock on December 02, 2004, 01:37:49 am
There's only one but it's supposedly *New* in the box.
Heres the link:
$300 Zaurus 6kL (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001W17H2/qid=1101969111/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/102-4615614-2837706?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846)

If you follow the link and its not there then someone beat you to it.

Good Luck!

I was able to order one about an hour ago.  My CFO (wife) approved this 3rd Zaurus.  This one I think will start life as a webserver.  It's too big for the pocket (the 760 will remain the main pda), but it should be a good backpack companion (use full size keyboard).

yes, I deleted it, because you shouldn't start a new thread about the exact same subject... see my PM.  We don't need three different threads on the same 6000 deal at amazon.

if you want to post updates about a thread, do so in the same thread.

$300 price is still there.  Kinds strange though, I mean how could someone (besides Amazon) sell then so cheaply ??

But at least there is the Amazon guarantee behind them.

Will Amazon cover the difference between $379 and $300, or does that only apply when Amazon itself sells it at $300?

They would not cover that difference, only applies to Amazon.com pricing.  You can always call and see...can't hurt.

So did I, ...

relax, usually Amazon vendors should provide good service otherwise in case of problems, Amazon takes the responsibility too - since your payment is made thru Amazon.

This just gets stranger and stranger. I ordered at $499 on 10/24. Two days later it went down to $479 and Amazon refunded $20. Several days later it was offered at $379 and I requested an adjustment and Amazon refunded an additional $100. On Friday I saw the thread about the unit offered at $300 and I again requested a price adjustment and today Amazon credited my credit card ANOTHER $79!!

So... in a week's time they've given me $199.99 in refunds. I think I love Amazon.com!!!

Steve - Who would have enjoyed his new 6000L even at $500 let ALONE at $300!!

YOU got VERY lucky as Amazon only Price adjuts to THEIR OWN prices, not third party sellers.  I think you must ahve gotten a cust service Rep who was ill-trained or full of the holday spirit (or scotch   )

Good For You !!!!

PS(I suggest anyone getting the 6000L for $300 to call Sharp and give them the serial number and make sure they are not refurbished...I mean, they are probably nice anyway, but the warranty might be shortened, and it's a good thing to know in any case...oh yeah, and post here and tell us what you find out !!).

Seeing the success of fiveinarow, I wrote Amazon customer service and asked for a refund of the difference between my cost I paid early last week of $379.99 and the $300.00 it was offered for later in the week.  I got an email back from them today saying I'm getting a refund of $158.00 (I bought 2 SL-6000Ls, one for me, the other as a gift to OZ developer Mickeyl).  So it's not just fiveinarow getting lucky.  I guess I'll get a 1GB SD card with the extra money.

Thank you for writing to Amazon.com.

I have checked the item "Sharp Zaurus SL-6000L Handheld" which is
currently unavailable on our website. The discounts we offer on items
on our web site do vary from time to time.  However, please be
assured that lowest price of this item on website was $379.99 the
amount your credit card has been charged.

Also, please note that some prices listed on an item's product detail page are offered by Amazon Merchants, or by individual sellers
through Amazon Marketplace.  Because Amazon.com does not have a
price matching policy, we cannot match the price offered by another
seller on our web site.

I got shotdown. not as lucky as your guys.

Edit: Just looked at sellers ratings over last few days: in the 1s and 2s. Another buyer complained that seller did not return e-mails. Are we smelling a possible scam?  My Dec 1 order hasn't shipped yet. Am very very worried.  The deal was really too good to be true!

Oh geez...I think I'm gonna be sick.  I just read the most recent posts on the other thread that popped up about this, and yes, it's starting to smell like a scam to me too.
I'm really sorry, I feel terrible- I was the one that brought this to everyone's attention.  Until now I'd never heard of a single scam by an Amazon vendor, I just assumed since it was listed on their site it would be bulletproof.

I'll be  praying that this mess will clear up and he'll deliver on the sale, the ZUG members in general, (many whom I now count as personal friends), deserve much better than this!

I'm deeply sorry for anyone who may be harmed as a result of this thread.  I promise next time I post on something like this I will temper it with appropriate warnings if it is from an unproven source.

Be well,

I too ordered the $300 "deal" before the negative feedback started showing up.

As long as Amazon comes through with the A-Z guarantee, if I don't get it, I'm disappointed but okay. I was especially looking forward to seeing the benefits of USB-host and the improved screen over the 860.

I didn't have fiveinarow's success either.

"Please accept my sincere apologies for any misunderstanding regarding the price listed on our website.  I have checked with our website and found that this item is not listed with any discount.

Also, please note that some prices listed on an item's product detail page are offered by Amazon Merchants, or by individual sellers through Amazon Marketplace.  Because Amazon.com does not have a price matching policy, we cannot match the price offered by another seller on our web site."

... and that e-mail came after a phone call to Amazon's 1-800 number too.  Just to make sure.

I was on such a premature high that I bought a 1GB Lexar SD card and a 128MB Viking CF card at eCOST for a cool $57 (after rebates, of course). I thought the savings justified it. Oh, well.

Sorry to hear about the bad news on the $300 Z6000Ls.   I sincerely hope the issue gets resolved soon.

Hello all-- I also placed an order for the $300 unit on Amazon last Thursday hoping to get back into the Zaurus after previous ownership of a 5500 and C700.  The seller's name was Jack Pettins and his email is "jpettins@yahoo.com"

I emailed him before I went through with it and he let me know that they were brand new (his response came within 5 minutes).  I also emailed back after my purchase to see when it might ship and his response was "it went out priority about an hour ago."

Given he said this early Thursday afternoon, a Priority Mail shipment should have arrived by today.  He also has not responded to my email from this morning.  Given that others feel something is up, I may call my credit card tonight as I don't feel like waiting for 30 days for Amazon to sort this out.  If anyone find out something, please post it here...

Anyone ever dispue an Amazon 3rd party seller charge before with the Credit card company.  If so, how did it work out?  Is it better than the A-Z Amazon protection thing?

I've disputed a PayPal credit card charge for $900 for a laptop I bought on eBay from a guy who scammed over 20 buyers.  They reversed the charge and since law enforcement was involved, it was eventually settled in my favor.  That's one reason I will *always* use my credit card with PayPal.

With Amazon, I expected that sellers were better vetted than this, if this truly turns out to be a scam.  However, Amazon does have the final responsibility given their policies.  You can dispute *any* charge with your credit card.  This will temporarily take the charge off of your account so you don't incur finance charges.  It will also launch an investigation.  Typically, most credit card companies require you to wait until it has posted to a statement before allowing a dispute.

p.s.  I've also used Amazon's A-Z guarantee (for a $10 stylus order from a seller that never arrived) but that took almost 6 weeks to resolve.  Not something I want to wait for regarding $300...

The credit card company can (and usually will) do a charge back.  The tricky thing here is that the Amazon A-Z ... says that if you innitiate a charge back via your CC company then the A-Z is no longer valid so you had better make SURE your CC company is going to side with you.  I don't know how long CC companies give you to submit a claim.  If you're really in a hurry to get your money back it might be worth using the threat of a CC chargeback to get Amazon to wave the 30 day waiting period, especially if this turns out to be fraud rather than just a dispute.

Wow, I consider you lucky.

Disputing credit card charges with PayPal may or may not work--so my rule is don't bank on it.

I also was scammed by someone through paypal. PayPal didn't even respond to my complaint. My credit card company, which has always backed me up many times and often for very high charges (always resolved in my favor, too, so not like I go around disputing appropriate charges), claimed they were unable to do anything because the seller is a third party.

PayPal actually states this explicitly in their TOS. The CC pay PayPal, not the seller. PayPal pays the seller. So from the CC point of view, a dispute wouldn't resolve in the buyer's favor anyway since the chargeback would be to PayPal (which fulfills its obligation when it relays the money to the sellre).

I don't know if your case was recent or not, or if you got lucky, or if PayPal actually resolved the issue through its own dispute management channels (especially since ebay has protection channels, as well). But please check carefully before putting all your faith in the power of credit card disputes. I also thought exactly like you did before this occurred. I was unpleasantly surprised and actually quite upset at my credit card staff and supervisors for a little bit. But they've always been good to me up until then and I didn't want to burn my bridges.

Basically, I don't use PayPal for anything I don't feel comfortable losing money over.
(sorry this doesn't help the current posters having trouble on amazon).

I did find this out however, and then I'll read through the entire thread to determine the details: hopefully you purchased the product through official amazon channels. These scams run on amazon a lot. I went through a similar thing with a laptop that was priced too good to be true.

I contacted the seller via email as requested in the description (which was my second hint to watch myself, the first being the low price). Then he replied (actually I repeated this process for three other low sellers to get a feel for what was going on). and wanted the money sent through Western Union. At that point, I contacted Amazon's and reported the activity as possible fraud. The description stated that the products were elligable for protection, but if the transaction isn't processed through Amazon's official channels, they aren't liable for anything. I wish amazon would monitor this type of behavior more closely, but I think these scammers pump multiple accounts and items into the system throughout the day, which makes it very difficult if not impossible to track it all.

sorry for the book! but I hope this helps in some way. my bad for not posting this sonner, could have saved some people some trouble it looks like. I just kept passing over the thread, sorry for that.

Thanks smooth.  I was lucky with my PayPal case as the scammer gave me his phone number and I was in contact with him before and after the auction (making it seem legit).  After he skipped town with everybody's money, his landlord was left with angry calls from buyers.  Since I had addresses and names, I was able to contact the local sheriff and found out that identity theft was involved as well.  PayPal finally "confirmed" the fraud, but since the money was gone they couldn't "provide any compensation."  Luckily I disputed the charge early and provided all the info to my credit card company.

Does anyone find it curious that we are all having problems accessing our Amazon accounts?  I'm wondering if Amazon "freezes" your account access if you have a "problem" order...

CSR stated their computers were down when I called in.

I hadn't said anything about my order, so I could have been calling in for a book for all he knew. So I don't suspect it's account specific.

NeuroShock,

Don't worry about it.  I'm one of the people who ordered the $300 Z's but I certainly don't blame you.  I started getting worried right after I started looking at the seller's details.  If I had only done that BEFORE placing my order just like I would on Ebay I would have passed.

agreed. i had confidence in Amazon. not your fault if they screwed up---at wors we'll get our money back. at best it's ok and we'll get our z's.
If it was a scam, by the time we get refunds, 6k's 860's and maybe even 3k's might be easier to come by. At the very worst it is an inconvenience, Keep posting good deals you notice... overall we'll be better off for it.

Today was the first day that I realistically could have received my package but there are lots of small clues.

1.  He's only been selling on Amazon for about a month.
2.  He started with many small / cheap items (cheap way to build up positive feedback).
3.  Some of the feedback looks like it was written by the same person.
4.  His name and email address seem not to appear anywhere on Google

FWIW I sent a note to Amazon yesterday asking them to look into this guy.  I don't know if they'll do anything so soon but it's a good idea to get the ball moving.  I may contact Yahoo as well and ask them to keep their logs related to this customer in case an investigation is needed later.

Even I ordered from Amazon marketplace with the seller as "jpettins@yahoo.com"

Amazon said that I would not get a shipping cofirmation seperately (which is so frustrating not to know when and if the product has been shipped).

So toady (after reading these forums) I emailed the guy "jpettins@yahoo.com"
to check wether my order had been shipped, but sadly till end of work day now, I haven't reveived any reply from him.

It would be too bad if this sweet deal didnt work out after all.

Actually, another product I bought from Amazon already got shipped (the normal free shipping option, nothing express delivery there) and I just got it delivered toady at home too, but the Zaurus which I had ordered together with the Amazon direct order, has not gotten delivered (This is surely not express delivery in that case, if its a delivery at all).

odd. I don't think i had an express delivery on the z.
anyway, this could (at the risk of sounding like pollyanna) be ok.
I have gone a few days without my email-- he very well could also.
Amazon likely keeps decent vendor info. as a scam this seems kinda risky for a failry small payout (under $6000) a zaurus is a weird thing to run a scam on... a bunch of suspicious and savvy techies would NOT be my first choice of targets for an internet scam. As we have seen, we're ready to set the dogs loose on the guy 4 days (less really)after we ordered. not too much breathing room for our would be con-artist.

So.. enough of a profit to rate grand larceny and violate a ton ( I think) of inter-state regulations committed against a large company with at least SOME info, and deep enough pockets to persue the matter...and motivation to "set things right' -something like this could really injure confidence in Amazon, and they'll see it that way---
doesn't sound like a real winner of a scam. It will be interesting , if it really is a scam to see where it goes.
anxiously anyway,

...(continued from above--weird, hadn't meant to actually post until I was done).

Anyway, I had accepted the risk and was very hopeful.  I'm obviously going to be EXTREMELY disappointed if this turns out to be a scam, but it isn't the end of the world and particularly if many people are hit by this identical thing, it'll be a no-brainer for Amazon to reimburse.  It's not like a single isolated transaction, it was a mass offer with "stockable items" (by which I mean there seemed to be a limited number that was used up).

I still haven't given up hope, although I'm certainly expecting a lighter Christmas than I was hoping for... snif...

Lol... I had this thought earlier, actually, not that it's any sort of real hopefulness... but if I was a scam artist, I would do this for something more popular and less focused on an intelligent do-it-yourself audience.  He told a zugger that he had 17 units, so you're looking at, as mentioned, only about $6k profit or so (ah, the parallelism... selling some z6k's for about $6k...).

Still... to go from selling $1 movies to a bunch of $300 Z's does look suspicious.  I'm suspecting scammage, but it'd be awfully nice if it came through.

Actually, do a google search for jpettins.  A number of hits come up, everything from $1 movies to $99 palm devices to QuickBooks pro ($125) to AutoCad 2005 ($298), all through Amazon.  A very varied selection of products (since Amazon is having trouble, clicking on any of the links shows all sellers as "not available", but if you take the cached versions of the pages, you'll see "jpettins" from VA showing up a lot).

It is CONCEIVABLE--unlikely, maybe, but CONCEIVABLE--that our friend Jack is hawking a variety of products, is swamped with the load, and simply has too much traffic to respond to individual emails.  Given that he responded very quickly to questions BEFORE purchase, that's doubtful, but you never know.

...I'm not holding my breath, but it's CONCEIVABLE.

Used to be selling...

Check out what (S)He is hawking now:
http://www.amazon.com/seller/jpettins (http://www.amazon.com/seller/jpettins)

That's right, not a single thing.  That's been like that since before Amazon's problems started this morning so I doubt it's just their database.

In addition, I ordered my unit the second day they were available and by attempting to add 100 units to my Shopping Cart I was able to discover that jpettins claimed to have 49 available at that time (When you attempt to order too many Amazon shows you an error and then reduces the number in your shopping cart to the number actually still available from that seller).  So the payoff for this scam maybe a bit more than $6K.  Perhaps the "17 units" sold so quickly, jpettins thought to put another 50 up for sale.

I know we need to give this time and see if anyone receives their unit in the mail, but I think I've actually convinced myself that this is a scam.

Well, given the change in email responsiveness, I'm leaning scamward as well, but I think Amazon's a little borked.  I just did an amazon search for "zaurus 6000" and tried "see this seller's other auctions" and only one of them came up with ANY auctions (and that one included the Z6k).

Ah well.  Maybe I can upgrade from my 5000D after Christmas when I get my $300 back (grin).

His auctions are all gone , so I bet Amazon knows already.

With Amazon's current problems, I am sure they won't give it much thought.

Besides, you need to wait like 30 days before amazon will consider the item undelivered (anyone notice this guys shipping was listed as Media Mail?)

On the flip side, if you wait 30 days your CC company could say "too late"

My guess is wait a week, and in the meantime, gather evidence and write down your thoughts , the 17 units vs the 49, the priority mail shipping, the lack of any product now, etc.....they all go toward your case of fraud.

What would be useful from Amzon is the Sellers full address to contact local authorities in a week or so.

Or freeze his accounts (bank).

What occured to me is that this he might have been selling the 5600 under the wrong  Ad...that would explain price.  As for the loss of any new ads, that could be becuase he sold alot of units....amazon stops you based on some sort of "velocity limit" when selling fat moving items.  As for his lack of response, he said he had the flu when I asked him about shipping.  ie: "I will ship next day, I have flu so not today."

It's probably ALL B.S., and we should all start looking for 6000L elsewhere, worst case it comes, and we have two!!

What does everyone think is a Good (but realistic) price for one of these.  I mean it MSRPed at $699 and I think we all got spoiled by the  $300 and $379 prices.  I am just curious where the real bargain price lies in most peoples minds.

Honestly, I think it is too early to tell. It would be helpful if Amazon was open for business-so to speak.  If we do a collaborative document --essentially pasting the threads here nto a document along with our own particulars reimbursment should be easy.
as too the price argument why is 379 "legit" and 300 not?  for theat matter where did all the z that suddenly apperared on ebay come from?
It seems to me that there really was some kind of corporate zaurus dump. Thus it seems possible that pettins could actually be moving z6ks
we shall see.

For me the dead ringer is the feedback.  I'm glad someone had a link.

I saw the positive feedback and once I heard from him via email--and saw that the purchase was guaranteed by Amazon--I thought I couldn't go wrong.

Now I see that he's only been "selling" for about two weeks before "dumping" a boatload of Zaurii.  Couple that with the bogus DVD's he sent a few folks last week, sudden unavailability and cleaned out store, and I'm 99% sure this is a scam.

I'll give it until mail comes tomorrow--VA to Atlanta should takes 2 days Priority and tomorrow will be 5.  Then I call Amazon and my card company.  I'm wondering if Amazon has a policy for when it is an obvious scam or if they make everyone wait 30 days...

Well I just got off the phone with Amazon and explained the situation.  Since they are doing a computer upgrade, account info is not accessible at their end either.

However, the rep did say that given the circumstances about a possible fraud (unlike the normal misdelivery or item not as adverstised) that they would start an investigation and potentially refund us all within a few days.  He told me to call back tomorrow when the system should be back up.  Hope that makes a few people feel better...

If anyone buys at a higher price directly from Amazon and it goes on sale recommend you contact and ask for a refund. I bought mine on the 17th of November for $499. It arrived on the 1st of December (remailed from Fla to Kyrgyzstan where I work) at that time it was $379 on Amazon. I contacted Amazon and they refunded the difference because it was so soon since I bought it.
BTW I sold my Sigmarion III and bought the Z6K, one of the better decisions I have made. The S3 was a good machine but had MS to the core and kinda fragile. The Z6K rocks and I'm glad to be actively back into Unix. Anyone know of a Picsel Browser for Qtopia??

Seems like surewest.com (or level3.net ) is the interner provider for jpettins. So, we have the IP and the TIME. So,  these guys can map the COMPUTER who was running on that IP at that TIME..

hmmm.
maybe.
he needed a credit card to be an amazon seller.
That would require somekind of traeable name--even if it wasn't his, there is something at the other end of the amazon account.  would it make sense for him to use an id that matched his CC record with amazon?

and it might, just maybe be that he exists too....

My order says the same thing.  I don't think Amazon actually knows when someone ships it, they just put that there because by taking your payment and notifying the Seller that you paid, they have completed their part of the transaction.  It is still up to the Seller to ship your item and I don't think they get a chance to modify the status of the order.

Its quite easy to set yourself up as a seller in Amazon. I did it with no trouble at all. Of course I already had an account with Amazon and they have my credit card numbers and address.
The part about payments is interesting:
Quote
3. Receiving Payment and Creating Refunds

Amazon Payments charges your buyer's credit card and deposits the funds
in your Payments account. Funds deposited in your Payments account are
automatically transferred to your checking account every 14 days. After
your first 14-day billing period has passed, you may manually claim
your
funds once every 24-hours by clicking the "Transfer now" link in your
Payments account.

Please note that whether or not you disburse funds from a sale to your
account, you are still required to ship the item within two business
days of order notification. You can manage your Amazon Payments account
and view your transactions at:

www.amazon.com/seller-account

As the seller, you may create a refund through Amazon Payments if you
and your buyer agree that it is necessary to do so. We have created
online tools for you to do this easily and quickly.  For help with
creating refunds and other payments issues, go to:

www.amazon.com/seller-help/payments
It is possible that the seller set himself up as an Amazon seller for 2 weeks and then went in for the kill.

That's the sticking point.
IF we could get amazon to investigate now there would be something on the other end of the creditcard/account info. The longer the delay the liklier he will be lost for good.

holy shit... adf and f1oyd1an have doubled the posts in this thread just in the last 2 hours

might you guys be obsessing?  Not that I don't blame you... I got a very quick email from him (posted somewhere in the begining of this thread) about the z's being out of stock... he replied in like 5 minutes saying that he'll "add more".  I thought it was great that he had so many in stock... I suppose it doesn't take much to change the qty available as an amazon merchant.

I've emailed him twice now after the purchase, and no response.  I thought it was such a great deal, I bought two... crap.. this is going to really suck if it turns out to be a fraud deal.

Quote
If you've already contacted jpettins and they failed to resolve the problem, don't worry--Amazon.com can help. You can either...
1. File a reimbursement claim under Amazon.com's A-to-z Guarantee if: You don't receive your order by December 10, 2004
2. You received a damaged or defective item
3. You received a different item from the one you ordered
4. You want to request a return, refund, or exchange

You'll be able to file a reimbursement claim beginning December 26, 2004
When you return to this page, you'll find the "File a claim" button in this space.

I'm going to keep my hopes up and see if it actually gets shipped.  Besides, I never saw anywhere that (s)he was going to send them via priority mail... I just saw "standard shipping" with a delivery estimate of December 10, 2004 - December 24, 2004.

If we all do, and send'em the thread (anyone know how?) maybe some progress will be made

You're not going to find out much my tracing the IP's especially if he's using Yahoo webmail.  Also, it's highly unlikely there's a real Jack Pettins--if so, it's probably a stolen id

Anyway, the best strategy with Amazon is to *call* them and say that your order looks fishy for the following reasons:

1) The seller has only been active two weeks
2) Previous items with positive feedback appeared to be small value items used to build up a rating
3) The item in question was offered at an extremely low price (below typical market value)
4) He was selling a *large* quantity of this item (only Amazon knows how many)
5) He provided *instant* communications just before and after the sale
6) Said the item shipped but did not provide any tracking or delivery confirm #
7) No replies to emails since last Friday
8) Negative feedback has started to show up on the seller
9) You know of many other buyers with the same concerns

Ask Amazon to begin an investigation on jpettins.  If we all do this it will quickly flag his account as a problem that they will check out.  Most likely, he and the money are gone.

Was on the phone with Amazon support. They said that the seller had "issues" and asked me to contact them on the 9th to process their A to Z guarantee.
The delivery estimate was between Dec 9th and 23rd. So it seems that at least it might be possible to get back the money fairly soon.

true offroad... I tend to obsess.
BUt... sometimes an idea is worth persuing.
in sum we have:
a good deal
the seller vanishes -no return mail for days after we have paid (though he COULD turn up)
The seller moves el cheapo stuff for 2 weeks -gets good feedback..then after big sales get listed as a fraud and a cheat (alarm bells?)
ALL of the seller auctions are suddenly gone (that makes me worry)
the seller says they come from va... but his mail is routed through a yahoo server in Cali
(that MIGHT be a yahoo thing though)
Maybe this should be examined and looked into?

Hi everyone. I'm a new user here, and I happened to have purchased a couple of these from jpettins before I found this website. You can imagine my relief at finding a bunch of other users who are in the same situation as myself.

It doesn't make it better if we get ripped off, but I have to say I find comfort in the fact that Amazon cannot possibly give us a hard time about a refund with this, since there are so many of us who are in touch about it.

Thanks to all of you who are doing the work to try to track this guy down. As soon as I know it's a fraud, I can start looking for other sources for new Zauruses (read: ebay).

I just sent them this e-mail.
should I call for a 3rd time today do you think?

This Item was sold inexpensively by a seller who had only been on amazon for 2 weeks. His previous items seem to have been low budget, sold to build a rating. His recent ratings, since his large sale of expensive pda's, have been bad. Amazon's at-a-glance rating system didn't indicate the brevity of his membership. All of his sales are closed. He has not responded to emails since last friday. There are quite a few other customers that are concerned that this is a probable internet scam. I would like the seller jpettins to be verified, as NO customer has been able to verify his existence since last friday- perhaps amazon's additonal info will make it possible. If the customer cannot be verified to currently exist and intend to complete his transactions by amazon ie if this is a scam, I would like a refund speedier than the usual A to Z 30 plus days in view of this being a crime rather than a botched transaction.

GEEZ! Hadn't checked up on this thread for about 24hrs and DANG it's huge!  LOL, I see offroad's point of view- we are DEFINITELY acting like a bunch of Linux/Mac no-life geeks that have begun a holy crusade against the monuments of evil!
On the other hand this particular person IS evil in my lowly opinion, so suffer our divine wrath he SHOULD!  In a strange way this threads activity since my last post has lifted my spirits above the humiliation point and now I'm just friggin ANGRY.  ANGRY beyond all reason that someone has violated the trust of my friends and myself.
Keep the facts pouring in, I mean heck, if the ZUG crowd can't provide enuf info and data to get this guy clamped then I doubt there exists a group that can. Before I forget I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who ISN'T mired in this mess for pitching in the expertise and time to help those who HAVE been victimizedby this crook.  Once again this kind of brotherhood spirit is what makes this community so great.

Keep your chins up,

I really would like to have the refund immediately, but this is better than 30 days I guess...

Keep at 'em.
as far as we can tell, we are victims of a crime.
Amazon is surely investigating this.
If it DOES turn out to be a crime we should have a right to know and any future opportunity to press charges.
Amazon should NOT be sheltering an interstate fraud behind their policy, and should be told so.
You might also mention vetting vendors and buyer confidence.......

I already sent 'em another mail to this effect when they responded to my last mail by telling me only that pettins has no open items...... 9which I alredy knew thanks to p

But seriously, I am also damm pissed that this pettings guy turned out to be a fraud. Actually even the $300 Zaurus was just too good to be true.
And to top it off, I already ordered my iRiver USB connector that was mentioned in amother thred for the 6000L anticipating the arrival of my Zaurus at the same time.

Not to insult anyone's desire for justice, but I think it would be a waste of time--the only info any of us have is the email address (again Yahoo=untraceable). The IFCC would have to go through Amazon to get any real details.  Amazon is the best advocate anyway since they have a financial interest in the matter.  Again the most important thing to do is to call/email Amazon and press them to refund your money ASAP.  If the rep you talk to isn't helpful, then call back or ask to speak to a supervisor.

At this point, I'm now 100% sure of the fraud (as there was no package today) so I'm just going to take this as a lesson learned and move on...

Hi,
Im reading this thread since beginning and have seen it grown

Here my 2ct

I had ordered the SL at $300 cause I missed the 380 offer
but only ordered at someone I didn`t know anything about
cause of the good reputation and specially the A-to-z Guarantee
from amazon.com.

The second reason has been the easy way to do the payment
using my credit card to pay at a privat persons offer
no Western Union, Moneyorder or anything else

So crying "victims, shoot the gangsters.." an so on can`t be the way,
reading the posts amazon offers earlier payback than the 30 days
even if it`s not clear what`s going on shows to me that amazon
is quite a fair partner in shopping.
So let them time to do their job, they ore their insurance have to
pay the bill

Victims of a crime are IMHO people that have been harder hit
for their health or money.

We tried a game - the trophy has been a cheap gadget - the only risk
a little bit of frustration and our money for a short period not in our pocket.
So what.

I got a little bit more lucky cause the payment with my german credit card
doesn`t work for this deal (nobody could explain that to me until now)

 kind regards

Wolfgang

Because of Amazon's A to Z guarantee, we won't lose money. Amazon will. So they should (and probably would) pursue the fraudster and not us. So basically for us we simply didn't get the candy that we wanted. (booo hooo)

Just spoke with a very rude "Team Leader" from Amazon's cutomer service. Now she says that the refund process can only be started 3days after the estimated delivery date. Since my estimated delivery date is between 9th and 23rd Dec, this means that I can only ask for reimbursement on the 26th. There goes my Christmas!
Title: Sl-6000l On Amazon For $300 Right Now!
Post by: adf on December 07, 2004, 01:25:15 pm
I have yet to see the reimbursement from amazon.
The a-z guarantee seemed really  devised to be  more of a botched transaction protection than a way to handle known fraud. Amazon needs to check into this and act quickly. NOT hang on to money (they get a small cut remember) that was gained through a fraud they facilitated.
Don't get me wrong, I like amazon, appreciate their guarantee and will buy books and movies from them in the future.  Nonetheless, I gave my money to THEM, to pay a vendor THEY authorized. As soon as they know that this is a scam they should repay every cent plus some small compensation out of sheer embarrassment.  I wouldn't have even looked at this deal from "cartrunkreseller.shady.com."  I bought because I had confidence in AMAZON.  That I will eventually see my money again is only partial (though admittedly a very large part) justification for that confidence.
This was my first electronics purchase from their site, and my 2nd transaction with a 3rd party seller on Amazon. I am not left with a good feeling. especially in that I was not planning to upgrade yet, risked the wrath off my wife, nearly sold my 5600 all over a good deal from a site that I had thought to be reputable, a notion of which I am now disabused.

yeah it isn't the titanic, I'm not gonna die, we'll all be ok. sure. But that doesn't make any of it ok.  only Amazon can do that and a refund 30 days after a fraud facilitated by them doesn't really cut it. we'll see. I hope they do the right thing I even tink they might....

That was unhelpful and did not contribute in any positive way to this thread, and I'm sure it hurt Wiz, (heck I winced and it wasn't even directed at me.)

That was a pure flame, that had no other content except the flame itself.

This violates expected forum conduct in every way shape and form, and brings embarrassment on the ZUG community as it can be viewed by members and non-members alike.

I am disappointed.  At the least stay focused and only contribute things that are benefitial, helpful, or continue the continuity of the thread.

I would be interested to know how many (tally?) have contacted Amazon.

My son (Paul) purchased 2, I purchased one.  Paul called Amazon this AM, and was treated pretty well.  I called just a few minutes ago, and asked the rep if she knew of any ongoing investigation of this guy or this incident.  She acted really *dumb* and said she'd make a note of looking into this.

I assume that, in order to transfer funds to JP Amazon would have more info, more trackable info, on this guy.

Lastly, a comment to Dave Anderson: unless I were Bill Gates, I'd rather not have $300 tied up in something--even if I were sure I'd get it back.  Be nice.

Guys

Although I understand you're all pissed, please try not to turn this into a war against eachother.  You are all in this together and there's no point in arguing against eachother.

If I may make a suggestion, why not just call your credit card company and tell them what happened.  Tell them you think it was fraud but aren't sure.  That way if you do end up receiving the Zaurus, you just tell them and they'll hand the money over.  If you don't, they can put a hold on it.

Remember, the credit card company has more money than all of us combined and they have a team that's more than ready to handle this kind of situation.

That's the thing. They should KNOW by now. they have his account and contact info. They should (and surely have?) have made an attempt at contact. In which case they surely know that we have been defrauded by now. (or otherwise, but I doubt it). Doesn't knowing this, having been the broker of the sale,  and not doing anything for us in some way make them a party to it? Not that I mean they intend to rob us or even intend to withold our refunds, but rather that more action and more information should be required of them at this point.
I appreciate their guarantee, but I think their responsibilities are maybe more immediate under such circumstances.

I agree with adf. Once Amazon receives complaints it should initiate an investigation, and probably has, but does it have to be so secretive about it? I think that we as the consumers have a right to know. A simple mail from Amazon that they are looking into the matter would be acceptable, I guess. IMHO they are acting pretty irresponsibly regarding this, acting like it is not their concern.

Amazon is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, e'tailers in the country.  This Marketplace thing is just extra gravy for them.  This is one of millions of transactions they do every day.  As far as they are concerned, jpettins may just "have the flu" as he told one of the buyers, and they expect that most transactions eventually work out.  As with PayPal, they give the seller the benefit of the doubt (unlike the buyer who is out of money) and a fixed window of time to respond to allegations.

From an casual observer, this case stinks of fraud, and follows all the classic signs of typical eBay/auction fraud.  Until their fraud department puts all of the pieces together and the window to respond has elapsed, I infer that they won't do much, unfortunately, and this may take a week or more.  And I'm sure he followed all the loopholes (14-day limitation on fund access, etc.) in order to maximize the fraud.  And it's probably likely that the funds were diverted to an account that was created by ID theft so even if it fell through there would be no implications.

Again, it's sad and frustrating for everyone involved.  With all these folks, it's too bad we couldn't do a group order of Z6K's from Sharp or a wholesaler at a great price..

So I snuck out of my vendor meetings just now and called amazon.  The guy was generally nice, and told me that I would need to wait until December 27th before I could officially request a refund (three days after the latest possible ship date).

The amazon rep however did take a great deal of information, after I gave him the about the seller (thanks to SHaubner).  He said that the information is being sent to another department, and they should be contacting me within 1 - 2 days (via email).  And it's possible that this other department could issue a refund sooner than what's stipulated in the a-z guarantee.

I'll see what they come back with.

Would it be possible to have the people who have ordered a 6k from this jpettins to PM me with the following info:

Name (real not nick)
email address (same one that amazon has - so they can get your account info)
qty ordered

I would like to compile this and send it to some management at amazon, that way we can present some kind of unified front.   I would also be happy to look into a group buy after all this crap gets worked out.  Even if everyone gets refunds by their own efforts, maybe Amazon can give us a group deal or something because of the trouble...

Thanks

Guys, relax.  I did not mean to offend or insult anyone; I apologize if I did.  I just find it amusing that someone would claim their Christmas would be affected by this.  But I stand by my claim: Don't spend the $300 if it's going to hurt that much.  Why you guys are bringing Bill Gates up in a $300 conversation is beyond me, but whatever.  I'm a far, far cry from rich myself, yet I'm responsible enough to know whether or not I can afford $300.

I understand you spend money and expect to get something.  That's cool, and that is a separate issue.  But if you're spending $300 - on anything - and it's maxing out your card or putting that much of a cash strain on you, I recommend that you don't do it.  Of course it's your money and you may do with it as you please.  I'm just putting in my $.02.  I almost jumped on this deal myself, but decided that I couldn't afford to part with $300 at the moment (just spent a ton on DVDs at the Deep Discount DVD sale), but also on my own decision that the 6000L would be no comparison to my C860.

Again, no harm intended.  I invest a lot and tend to offer financial advice when I shouldn't.

Offroadgeek, that a constructive step and I applaud your initiative on this.

Even I called Amazon, and got the same reply - wait for 3 days after the 23rd and then call for refund. Policy matter. But the guy was very understanding and friendly.

If this group buy thing works out, nothing like it.
Boy here I was drooling for the Zaurus 6k (and even smooth talked my wife into supporing me saying its Christmas time and we should make love not war   :-) and kaput goes my dreams... Of course when I told her how deal failed, she showed sympathy, but must have been laughing inside saying "good for him".

I don't know how that was meant, but I'm serious now when I say stop the flamewar.

Just drop the issue,  Ok?  If there's any hard feelings, PM me personally and we'll deal with it as such.

I wrote to the FBI earlier this year about a Nigerian scam I kept getting emails on.

When you report to the FBI you can cut/paste/type details into a textarea for them to read.  I recommend reporting a complaint to them since its easy to do & we need to get them on this as soon as possible.

I only hope that an investigation is started before Yahoo deletes any logs that might be helpful.

While I currently have no interest in purchasing a 6000 I was formerly employed as a customer service representive at Amazon.com.

Amazon WILL refund you your money through the A-to-z Guarantee if you don't get the Zaurus you ordered.  If you have any problems with this, ask to speak to a supervisor.  Supervisors are one above a "Team Lead" and you should have a choice to speak to a lead or supervisor when the call is escalated.  They may not get on the phone, they may have to call you back.  (Triple sucky, but while I was there they always called back within 24 hours)  You may have to wait the 3 extra days past the estimated delivery date but they will give you your money.  If you make enough of a stink you can get a small gift certificate too.

The department that deals with 'sellers' is completely seperate from the general customer service you get when you call.  For privacy reasons information flows primarily one way.  Even if they are shutting this guy down, they can't tell you for 'his' privacy.  Sucky I know.  However, if he gets enough complaints against him he will be shut down.  (Since I didn't work in that department I'm not sure about the whole law enforcment thing.)  I think it's three guarantee claims for new sellers as he obviously is.

This does smell a little to me, because at $300 he'd only be able to sell eight a month due to limits put in place by Amazon.  That's a little less than the 17 he claimed to have.  Also I read he said he sent some priority.  That's pretty unusual if you asked for normal shipping.  Shipping can get expensive and he doesn't get the full 3.95 or whatever it is they charge on electronics for shipping.  Amazon takes a cut out of that too.

Thanks for the info gretchen.  Somehow as a new seller he seems to have bypassed the limit of 8 sales.  It appears that there are well over 17 people who have posted here who ordered from jpettins and some ordered more than one unit!!!  Also, you are right about the shipping--that should have been my first clue that the shipping was too low and was "media mail" (the only option provided).  He claimed to have shipped it Priority, but that would have cost him well over $10-15 (and would have arrived by yesterday!)

I guess if you weren't planning on sending anything it wouldn't matter...

Just an update and some comments.

So far this is what I've done:

Contacted the seller to ask about shipping arrangements (media mail didn't seem right).  No reply.

Contacted Amazon and asked that they check into the seller.  Didn't ask for a refund.  Got back a (canned?) response asking me to wait until the 26th and bug them for a refund at that time.

Used the helpful "this didn't resolve my question" link in the above reply and tried again to get them to start looking into this seller.  Pointed out that this was potentially criminal behavior and that acting quickly might help them get THEIR money back and prevent future victims.  Hopefully this one goes a notch up the food chain but who knows.  No reply yet.

Sent an email to abuse@yahoo.com asking them to please hold onto all logs related to this user because he may be running a scam and the authorities may need them.  No reply yet.

obsessively checked mail, email, and this thread.

We are guessing that, if this is a scam(which we pretty much think it is) that he meant to be and was gone by saturday morning, right? No word since friday?  Cds ordered on the 1st would require no great explanation as to their whereabouts on the third.  He, if he didn't care and intended to be gone. could have not shipped a thing. who'd have known? What would he gain by actually sending even a single cd by that date? NOTHING could have arrived in time to help his scam..  he'd just have lost postage.

Maybe he is a moron who saw the sales potential and lost his head? Was legitmately selling cds...
and got caught in a whirlwind of selling 50 or so (how many is our count offroad??) copies of MAYBE 1 Z he actually had gotten a hold of once he saw the cash flowing in... or some other gadget set him into a frenzy of fiduciary fiction... who knows.  But it is not very consistent with the theory. It isn't so great an objection that it makes the theory, just on the merits of the cd, much less likely, either.

Hi,
me again
wizzard asked for the details

I´ve ordered the unit at 2nd. Dec. 16.01 (PST? don´t know whicht time amazon uses)
and got an auto confirmation about the unit. So this has been at 11 PM at GMT i`d
gone to bed. Next morning my order has been canceled 2 hours later cause of

"Your order included the following items:

1 of Sharp Zaurus SL-6000L Handheld [Electronics]

On occasion, an Amazon Marketplace purchase cannot be completed.

In this case, the seller is currently unable to accept payment."

I used a U.S. delivery adress and a german credit card earlier used
for amazon.de and a flower shop in the U.S. (via phone)

asked amazon via mail later for the reasons of canceling.
They told something about problems to charge my card and that they
sent me a mail for resubmitting payment. Never got any other mail
and at amazon.coms webpage there is something written about
reacting within 3 days and not 2 hours.

So if I get time I´ll call my bank and ask for the problems of the
deal.

So I don`t think amazon has any idea of getting in trouble with the
seller, maybe a communication problem with the bank or something
else.

Sorry for can`t giving any further hints
kr

So, Ive spoken to my bank.
amazon.com asked for the money at dec 2nd and got
a transaction-id, this id ist still valid, so if they wants to they still
could get the money
I asked jpettins 14 hours befor the order if he could deliver to
germay directly maybe he saw my order and rejects cause
fearing some trouble with german banks, I don`t know how
the payment/getting money really works for sellers at amazon marketplace.
But this order is getting more and more sensless, why amazon
is canceling an order with valid payment, Ill aks them later this day.
So now trying to earn some more money for new gadgets

Are you're refering to the feedback posted today that claimed he delivered something within 5 business days?  We don't know:

1.  If this person posted the feedback the day the item arrived or a week later.  For all we know this could be for an item that was delivered a week or more ago.

2.  If this is even a legitimate feedback.  I'm sure a scammer wouldn't be above buying a few cheap items from himself.  A few of the feedbacks actually look fake to me although I don't want to read too much into a few broken sentences.  One of these possible fakes lists an email address but the domain doesn't exist.

3.  How long he was planning on running this scam.   He may have expected to have a week or even a month to run his scam and he probably would have if the deal hadn't been posted here.

That is very weird.
I don't see why pettins would worry about german banks though. What was the worst that could happen?  He gets our money, and not yours...and still is sought for fraud? One more angry bank surely wouldn't deter him if that was what he was up to..

Curiouser and curiouser.

especially, if, as the theory goes, he was planning to bug out on the 3rd.
There wouldn't be shipment confirmation issues till the 6th realistically. That couldn't have been his worry.
He certainly could have collected (I think) but even if there was a chance he couldn't... why would he care? It isn't like he would lose anything.... That makes it absolutely worth his while to take wolfgangs offer, and no discernable (to me ) reason to refuse it.

Maybe he plans to steal some zs and ship 'em? and doesn't want to get caught by customs? HEhehehe.
What else would fit this?
Along with the cd buyers?
I guess either he intends to sell... or intended to. Or is a scam and kinda messed up and unorganized (!) I don't get the weird incidents of responsible behaviour?
why send ANY cds?
why reject a foreign customer? (was it the date/time? Maybe he wouldn't be able to colect that one it as was so late and gave you a break?)
BUt why disappear? why no auctions? (the magic 8 works mysteriously it appears)
Of course maybe that is a con thing.. break the pattern a little for better camouflage.....

I feel like some kinda geeky extra from agatha christie.....

I'm sorry for the miscommunication.  The limit is a dollar amount not a fixed number of sales.  Due to legal reasons I'm not sure if I can give out the exact amount...  Lets just say 300x8 plus a few other orders comes out to a nice round number.  The system is not perfect and as it looks like a bunch of people ordered at once    A few orders may have gone through before the 'over the limit' registered.

I looked at the $400 deal from the new amazon seller (which is gone by the way), because it looked like maybe too good a deal also. What I found interesting was looking at this sellers other items for sale. Among them was a brand new Canon EOS-1D Mark II 8.2MP Digital SLR, which normally goes for about $4,500.00 from reputable discount camera dealers.

If my memory serves me, this person was selling it new for about half the going rate. When I looked at other sellers, the cheapest was for a brand new camera at $990.00. Now that I think about it, I've been wanting to upgrade to a digital SLR . . . .

What is also interesting is that many of the sellers for that item also claim they don't take amazon payments. It looks to me like potential fraud being conducted over amazon is bigger than I ever thought possible.

That's another odd detail about pettins, too. One of the reasons (besides the at-a-glance 12 month rating that seemed to imply he'd been there a while and been good) I thought this deal was ok was that I could and did pay through amazon. If he'd asked for another channel of a payment I'd have dropped him immediately.
Maybe we should set up a thread (here or elsewhere on fraud at amazon, and having collected some info turn it over to a big news paper. soon. during the christmas rush.
I'm kinda mad at amazon about this, and I think maybe we could save some others who likewise trust amazon the grief  and annoyance of being robbed there. Kinda lik,e pointing out that a shopping center is in a high crime neighborhood, and directing folks elsewhere....
Amazon.com  the ghetto of e-commerce hehehehehe

speaking of which offroad, how's that coming? about ready to send 'em a "class action" notice of being ripped off via their website?

and--totally off topic-- looking at your current z collection I'm surprised you did 2 6k's instead of  of a 3k. Personally, I think I'd be happier with a 760 than with a 6k to begin with.  No offense, just musing on form factors. or was it like my "purchase" just too good a deal...?
I don't think we're ready for that yet... I'm still getting PMs and updating the tally.

I've split that tally post of mine into a new pinned thread in the deals forum... that way it's easier to update and for people to reference.

regarding my current z collection, and why I bought the 6k..  I hadn't actually wanted a 6k before, as I'm pretty partial to the clamshell design, but at $300 I just couldn't pass.  I would like to get a 3000, but it doesn't add much more functionality than what I have with my 760 (except for usb host and the 4 gb drive).

I bought two because I figured my brother would like to upgrade his 5500, and even if he didn't I thought I could easily get what I paid for it.

I would recommend (as I'm sure adf and others would agree) that you continue to contact amazon individually.  As they will probably only speak with the account owner directly for refunds.

I'm not certain that we can actually do anything with the consolidated data of who purchased from jpettins, but minimally the data can go to amazon to solidify our case that he's a fraud, and possibly get in on a legit group deal.

Personally, I'm not concerned at all about the refund.  I'm confident that amazon will pull through with the a-z guarantee and I'll get 100% of my money credited.  Though I'm willing to wait until end of December to get it, others who are looking for the refund sooner might be fighting a difficult battle.

I am sure that we will get our refunds; but I think it'll take till the end of Dec. Of course, if Amazon decides that a fraud has been perpetrated they might refund the money sooner, but I don't really believe that it will.
Will it be possible for us as a group to pressurize Amazon to sell us Z6Ks at least at their advertised lowest price ($379)? How many ZUGers would be willing to go for that price?

One thing that is bugging me is that although Amazon has responded to me twice now neither response indicates that they actually read what I sent them.  It's almost as if they have some sort of (buggy) irc bot scanning the posts for keywords and spitting back pre-formatted text to match whatever keywords are found.  It seems like they may not even be aware of a problem untill after they've paid out on their guarantee a few times.

As I said yesterday, Amazon is a huge company and I'm sure that customer service is a semi-automated process where reps are sitting in a big cubicle farm and expected to quickly process 'x' number of responses per hour.  The only info they have is what pops up on their screen.  Furthermore, one of the three people I spoke to over the last few days was obviously in India, who was using a script and couldn't even understand me.  I'm sure the email processing is similar.

But he still screwed up that order!  And the other sale was misadvertised as well.

Anyway, looking at offroadgeek's tally thread the current total is 17 (Dec 8-14:00 EST)

That's 17x$300=$5,100 which is a lot more that the "limit" that gretchen said was in place, and the tally doesn't even count a few of the other folks that mentioned they had bought, nor any non-ZUGers.  Again, not sure for what duration this limit applies.

Ok.. so we have amazon not really complying with it's own policies. One of us should sign up as a vendor to verify the policies btw. Their failure (if the policies are currently what we understand them to be) cost us as a group about $2500 ( the other half being lost to fraud committed in accordance with their policies  (if we look at it that way.. and based on the sales arising from a post within our "association's" communication system ...ahem... I think we might) maybe there is some hope for cutting deal with Amazon.
My guess though is that at the end of December we will be having very annoying bureaucratic conversations with amazon trying to get our money back before the Christmas '05.

Re the e-mail. I have also spoken to India.
I have twice posted that the matter is not resolved using the link they suply in the email for that purpose.
I expect a future email from amazon about how glad they are they have resolved this to my satisfaction and that yak hair sweaters are a great gift idea.. for sale now used by attila@weaselface.net..  ...would I like to make a one click purchase?

1. Communicating with Amazon.com

Be sure to check the Seller Announcement Board daily to stay current on
scheduled maintenance updates and other important information.  We also
post important messages related to new feature launches and helpful
tips
for the seller community on our Seller Success Board.  You can find our
announcement boards at www.amazon.com/seller-resources.

Many Internet Service Providers and private e-mail accounts use
aggressive spam filters that may inadvertently block some of our
e-mails
before they reach your inbox.  In addition, many free email programs
(such as Hotmail or Yahoo) may send our messages to your bulk or junk
mail folder unless you add our address to your Address Book.  Please
take the time now to add payments-messages@amazon.com to your personal
address book in your e-mail program.

To avoid missing any new orders, you should check your Amazon Payments
account at least once a day for any newly completed transactions. This
is the best way to ensure you don't overlook any recent orders because
of missing e-mail notifications that might have been blocked by SPAM
filters. Also, this ensures that any order notification e-mail you do
receive from Amazon.com is legitimate.  You can manage your payments
account and your transactions by visiting:
www.amazon.com/seller-account.

Be sure to sign up for our Seller Success Newsletter and have important
seller news delivered directly to your Inbox.  Sign up at
www.amazon.com/delivers.

************************************************************************
2. Account Security

Amazon.com will never e-mail or call a customer and ask that they
disclose or verify their Amazon.com password, credit card, or banking
account number. Such information should only be submitted when
completing an order on Amazon.com, registering for Amazon Payments,
contacting Amazon.com directly, or when making updates to the Your
Account or Seller Account areas on our site. You may read more about
conducting secure transactions with us at:

www.amazon.com/help/security

************************************************************************

************************************************************************
4. Listing and Canceling Items, Managing Inventory, and Fulfillment

Amazon.com makes listing an item a snap. Visit www.amazon.com/sell to
list an item on our site in 60 seconds.

Any listing you create is available for purchase by buyers on our site
within minutes.  However, there may be a delay of up to several hours
before your listed item appears in Your Seller Account.

To cancel a listing, go to your seller account at
www.amazon.com/seller-account and click the "Open" link next to the
platform you are selling on (Marketplace or zShops).  Find the open
listing that you want to cancel and click "Edit" and simply follow the
instructions for canceling.

For additional help with listing items and managing your inventory
please visit:

www.amazon.com/seller-help/manage-listings

When an Amazon Marketplace sale is completed, our system automatically
sends you e-mail notification from Amazon.com with the words "Sold -
Ship Now!" in the subject line. This e-mail is your notification that
the buyer's credit card has been successfully charged for an order and
that it's time to start the shipment process. While the e-mail will
include all the information you need to fulfill the order (and a
packing
slip you can clip and include with your shipment), you should confirm
the transaction by logging on to your seller account at
www.amazon.com/seller-account and clicking the "Sold" link for
Amazon.com Marketplace.  For more information, please visit:

www.amazon.com/seller-help/fulfillment

************************************************************************
5. Interacting with Other Sellers

Amazon.com has created forums where all sellers can interact with each
other, swap tips and insights and share experiences.  New sellers can
ask questions of experienced sellers, and everyone can discuss
firsthand
how exciting it is to sell on Amazon.com. You can view all of these
boards at:

www.amazon.com/seller-resources

************************************************************************
6. Seller Best Practices

Amazon.com was founded with a vision of providing an extraordinary
experience for buyers.  Customers have come to expect this quality of
service--that is what keeps them coming back for more purchases. As a
seller, you now control the same experience for your buyers. To help
guide you, we have put together a list of best practices used by our
most successful sellers. These include the following:

* Keep checking for new sales at your Amazon Payments account online at
www.amazon.com/seller-account.
* Check the seller announcement and discussion boards before contacting
Amazon.com about a particular issue--you may quickly find what you're
looking for at www.amazon.com/seller-resources.
* Have valuable news sent directly to your inbox by subscribing to our
Seller Success newsletter at: www.amazon.com/delivers.
* Provide high-quality customer service, which includes handling
refunds
and returns in a timely manner. Refund within 48 hours an order that
you are unable to fulfill.
* Always ship within 2 business days of order notification. (That's
required!)
* Know your feedback rating and constantly strive to improve it - this
is one of the most important metrics that buyers use when making
purchasing decisions.  You can view your feedback by logging into your
seller account.
* Review shipping resources at
www.amazon.com/seller-help/shipping-resources.
* Review our shipping and packaging guidelines at
www.amazon.com/seller-help/ship-pack-guide.
* Send buyers a ship confirmation e-mail after you ship their order,
and
include tracking or delivery confirmation numbers if they are
available. Also, encourage buyers to leave feedback at
www.amazon.com/feedback.

It may be that jpettins signed up or transitioned his seller account to "Pro" since he was "offering" items in bulk

www.amazon.com/promerchant

It may have provided for a higher seller limit

Again, looking at Amazon's policies, after 14 days he would have been free to transfer the funds to his checking account at will.  He could have transferred everything this past weekend, and then withdrawn the money and closed his checking account (most likely under a fake ID) on Monday--just as folks would have started wondering where their packages were that supposedly shipped on Thursday...

About the feedback, it sometimes takes *me* weeks to post eBay feedback so these items may have been received over a week ago.

The thing that is just killing me is that amazon could easily verify his continued existence as per several requests. This isn't outlandish.. they brokered and guarantee the deal after all.
I'd take guaranteed  refund on the 24th with notification from Amazon that he is no longer available.
Or an explanation that he has been contacted and we should just shut up and wait.
Their refusal to simply verify that he is there, given the circumstances, is really appalling.

Of course.... the ebay z's are probably a scam too....  but at least one could arrange one's own escrow and give the seller safe take it or leave it offer.

Most ebayers with established feedback ratings are legit.  I looked at a few listings, but they are typically over $400 at the end and with shipping around $430-$460.  Might look into a used c700 again.

Agreed.  It looks like I'm going back to my previous plan of waiting untill after Christmas and trying to pick up a clamshell from someone who has just upgraded.  Many (but not all) of the 6k's on Ebay right now are from people who have been selling there for years so I wouldn't hesitate if the price were right but they're really not selling for less than $400.  It's a shame though,  I've already got a SD card, screen protectors, and a pair of USB cables on the way.

I sent a link of our discussion here to Mike Magee, editor of The Inquirer (http://www.theinquirer.net).  If he writes an "Online Buyer Beware" piece for the holiday season using our experiences with Amazon as the foundation for his article, it might embarrass Amazon into taking some action on our behalf.  Mike Magee's email address is:  ()

I wish i were a little more solvent or less onliged to buy stuff for people just now. I'd buy one   of those too.... and when it came up as a fraud after all this, sue amazon or something.  If this one is bs too Amazon bears the resposibility, I think. They have no reason to keep us in the dark and keep our money.
Actually, I think amazon is justified in keeping the money and holding to their a-z policy.  And it makes sense that its based on the latest possible receipt date, otherwise, people could initiate a refund on items bought too early and that person could end up with a refund and the item purchased.

I'm sure that as a company, Amazon doesn't want to be too quick to denounce a seller as a fraud.  I know it's hard, especially when we're possible victims, but I think we should be as patient as possible, and let Amazon follow their processes.

should I try to buy this one?  My wife would kill me if she ever found out what I was doing (or even about the other two).

Best case scenario, I get a 6000.  Worst case scenario, I get duped again and will eventually get a refund.

I agree with that for the majority of situations where the seller may just be slow in shipment.  However, as I stated before, there is just too much info here to dispute that this is not a fraud.  There is a big difference between selling a few used DVD's for $1.33@ for 2 weeks and then pushing $300 consumer electronics in bulk.

Amazon has a responsibility to protect its customers from getting involved in situations like this in the first place.  They should provide a few days for the seller to respond and then if no contact is made then let the customer know that there may be a problem with their order.  How many of us would still be waiting for our Z6K if it weren't for this board?  How many poor folks are still out there waiting? I expect to be left out in the cold with eBay, but not Amazon.  The *least* they could do at this point is to acknowledge that an investigation is merited and not send a form email.

I agree with you, I just don't think it's realistic for Amazon to react extremely quickly on this.  We do have a lot of supporting info on jpettins being a fraud, but there is still an extremely slim chance that he may just be really busy (maybe traveling with work), and just hasn't had a chance to respond to a single email or ship the items.

Hopefully this will all be worked out soon though.

The pettins stuff is links back to amazon.
the thing to do is find that last december 8th poster..get info if possible.
_radu_ seems to have been on amazon for about 5 years writes reviews and stuff. Would be the best resource.... if possible.

And as to waiting out amazon's corporate policies.  BS!
If this was a brick&mortar would we have to wait?  I understand that it would be folly for them to persue every complaint. This situation is clearly a problem. several of their reps have said so.  They have the capacity to verify the existence or flight of pettins. I think that they need to do so and to notify us.  If they can't pay us back until the day after the last shipping day, that I could understand. BUt they should make arrangements quickly and not leave this haning over our heads and then put us through the wringer to claim our refunds a month later.

We should have feedback from amazon. If they also cannot confirm the viability of the seller then we should have all of our claim stuff filed and done and sorted by amazon to make a nice easy refund on the 1st day it is allowable.  Now maybe it is too early to expect them to do any of this. Maybe a week or so would be a more reasonable timeline.

In the meantime can we find nothing else about the elusive pettins?

I am showing amazon bashing currents.
the reason is simple.

I bought from their page with their logos all over it. They really can't direct me to a vendor and then say caveat emptor. They brokered. they will refund, I am sure.  I just thought they had a better class of vendor-- I had an expectation that they were more careful of fraud that they currently appear.

I agree that I should have done lots of reading and found out That shopping at amazon is more like shopping at a gas station in the south bronx, regardless of the corporate logo in the sign, than it is like shopping at a well patrolled quality controlled suburban mall.  My perception was askew.

Lot's of reading?  The A-Z guarantee is very clearly and concisely spelled out on the link that is shown with every single merchant listing.

I realize it's human nature to lash out at the visible middleman when the real culprit has disappeared.  But Amazon has always done well by me.  And I have had to use the A-Z guarantee before.  They fulfilled their obligation precisely inline with their policies and kept me as a satisfied customer.

If I'd been unhappy with anything short of an instant refund, policy be damned, I'd have given up on a vendor that has since treated me very well.

But it's your right to steam.  I might well be doing the same in your shoes.  And there is always the possibility they will expidite things if they get enough queries to show up more on their rader.  Best of luck.

I almost jumped on this "deal".  Had one in my cart.  Decided against it purely because of funds.  But I never worried about losing money as I knew Amazon was a safe bet.

Borak, you are right I am taking this kinda personally.
still, I didn't shop for away to send my money on vacation, Much as I do appreciate the a-z I would like more than "wegotta gurantee waddya whinin about..shaddup" in reply to a fair number of reports of problems with a single vendor to the point of the appearance of possible fraud. Based on this I will tend to avoid amazon 3rd party sellers.  Money back is nice, but I like a chance to get what I pay for too.

    Hi
I just saw your listing. Is it unopened and in a sealed box? Also what are your return policies.
Some friends of mine are also interested so it'd be good to know how many of these you are selling. Also, if we buy, how fast can you ship?
We just got scammed by a seller in Amazon so we do have to be careful. Hope you understand.
I'll wait to hear from you.

What on earth is Square Trade? Looks like another scam? These are not available any more on Amazon.

I don't believe he was even an Amazon seller of ANYTHING as early as Nov 10.  I think the dates you are looking at are the dates that exact item showed up on Amazon from any seller.  I can't see it now in his profile but I'm pretty sure it said "member since Nov 15" or something very close to that.  He definately wasn't selling in November.  The cashed pages you are looking at were captured on Dec 2 so all we can really say is that he was selling expensive items as early as Dec 2 which of course we already know.

Here we have a situation where many people are complaining to Amazon about the validity of one vendor who sold them the same item over a very short period of time.  One would like to think that Amazon should quickly realize the nature of the problem and act accordingly.

The comments in this thread are born of frustration in that it appears as if the perpetrator of the scam is not being brought to justice and that Amazon doesn't seem to care if the perpetrator gets away with his crime.  For those who have had their money stolen, the crime is of a personal nature, and they want to see some action taken on Amazon's part to make this thief account for his misdeeds.

Now it is understood that Amazon might be working on the case, and it is understood that the victims will eventually be receiving a refund from Amazon.  It is also understood that large corporations such as Amazon are impersonal, filled with bureaucracy, and slow to act.  Still we hope that we can somehow affect the course of events through both our individual & collective efforts.

What is this forum if not to share our experiences and solutions?

Well said, johnw...my sentiments exactly.  As with adf, I don't have a beef with the A-Z, but am really upset that Amazon's setup is so shoddy as to let this happen.  They've been around awhile, so there should be no excuses.  They should have a contingency for when a mass fraud like this occurs.

I'd suggest you contact Amazon & let they know the

Things that failed to ring a bell based on my prior knowledge of fraud:

Apparently you can get a 12 month rating with one transaction over a period of a few minutes.
-ver misleading--- amazon's screw-up.

I paid through amazon.... I expect fraud to be through escrow or western union or money order.....or even credit card or wire...  good and bad. It lent false respectability, but is does guarantee the safety of my money (for wich I am thankful)

Amazon's "new and used" is a sort of recommendation from amazon.. a "look here this is good"  Very different from an auction, and I think should carry greater weight. certainly it carried weight with me.

Amazon's shipping confirmation email.  Is just bs, but could allay suspicions till a criminal had goten safely away.

I looked at the overall rating in at-a-glance, saw 12 months was sound, saw that I could pay through amazon and completed the transaction--thinking it was all cool.  Was this careless or was I somewhat misled?

This is not an isolated incident.  I watched the SL 6000s go down to $400 the first time and back up with a lot of frustration.  I wanted to upgrade from my SL 5500 for a while, but I didn't have the money.  When I got the money, I jumped on the first sale I saw on Amazon for less.  On Nov. 5th someone using the acount name kevinkassebaum posted an SL 6000L for $390 when the Amazon store price was $499.  They were a new seller with no feedback.  I took the plunge knowing that I was taking a risk of tying my money up for a couple of months if it was a scam.  I ordered and nothing happened.  I got no reply emails and nothing shipped.  I filed my A to Z(aurus) claim and am waiting for resolution from Amazon.

I would bet there is a fair amount of fraud like this on Amazon and other e-tailers.  Amazon's  policy of lowering and raising prices sets up a clientel of people who are willing to take risks to get expensive items at the previous lower prices.  Someone who reads News.com or The Register would not have a hard time keeping track on which gadgets are being droped from distrubution and clearanced on a regular basis.  The old saw about a deal that looks too good to be true holds up well here.

I did buy a SL 6000L from the Amazon store when they went down to $379 (WoW lookit the screen, and with the sled, it is _truly_ HUGE, froth, drool, froth, drool pant pant pant _breath_).  I would say to all who wanted a SL 6000L at $300 to get one on Amazon or Ebay now or in the next month or two and be willing to spend $400 to $450 or so.  Otherwise, we as_a_community should try to set up a group buy of the SL 6000_W_ through Pricejapan or some other importer once the bluetooth drivers are cracked.

But that is just my opinion.

Guys. I think you guys will be better off by filing charge back with your credit cards ASAP. I had a bad experience with Paypal/Ebay (yeah, full guaranty my a$$), and am feeling that if you wait too long, you'll lose your dispute right.

The law is on your side, so take care.

in other words amazon's policy insists that you wait beyond the date you can contest.... then ....gotcha! ?
I hadn't heard of any problems with the a-z,  and I did debit card, not credit card, but I will see what my bank says this afternoon.

Then I think we all collectively and individually need to write them.
what shall we say?
that we would perfer that amazon find and deliver z6ks for less than or equal to $400
the remaining funds to be disbursed to them upon verification of the availability of the goods and viability of the source?
should we not name a price , but say, at a group discount rate, since we have been affected as a group..and are making a lrage purchase?

let's sort this out and get on it

Hi,
we have been going over and over this. But it is pretty clear to us, and you, that jpettins@yahoo.com was not a legit vendor, and that this was a scam.
many of us who attempted to purchase zaurus 6000's from him were directed to his sale by Amazon supplied link and 'best price' directions, and he was an amazon vendor. We would prefer, rather than a refund, that amazon find and supply us with the devices we intended to purchase at the best legitimate price at the time amazon directed us to this fraud. the bes t delivered price at that time was $379 per unit. We would like to put our refund against this and supply the difference once amazon has has verified the goods.
this is fair in that we would have bought at this price had amazon not redirected us (and our confidence in amazon very much facilitated the bad deal). The benefit to amazon is that amazon retains our funds in this transaction, rather than refunding us cash at your expense and having us go to e-bay or pricejapan to buy our zauruses. I am putting together a list of those interested in such a large discount group purchase. you should hear from us collectively and singularly. Collectively we make several thousands of dollars of business for amazon, and as members of an international computer users group (the group member purchased 17 of these devices, and nearly 7,000 reads have been listed

The price for one is 350 $ without shipping cost. Transaction must be made trough Square Trade because is safer for both of us . Please give me your complete adress to find the shipping cost and to start the transaction.

Guys,

After today, I threw in the towel with Amazon.  I wanted to wait just incase it was shipped on the 6th.  I figured from Alexandria VA to Towson MD should take no more than 3 days (less than 100 miles).

I hate to say this but I think we all need to forget about Amazon.  I'm sure the group purchase/reimbursement would be against company policy anyway.

I just got off the phone with my Credit Card company and they will take it from here.  I will have the credit posted on my account within 48 hours.  Amazon SHOULD do this but WON'T.  If that is how you paid, I would recommend it but, it's your money.  Their legal department is much bigger than mine.

This is a huge black eye to Amazon (at least in my opinion) and could say that they have lost much more than just this transaction.  They have lost credibility, reputation, etc.  I have now more faith in Ebay (and that's not saying much).

It royally sucks, since like others I bought the expansion sleeve and the USB cable and had hoped to be upgrading my trusty 5500 soon.

Some might say that this was a third party sale and yea, I got the expansion sleeve in 3 days from their inventory but you know what, Amazon's name was on the other transaction.  Amazon got the credit.  Amazon was told over and over there was a problem.  Amazon DID NOTHING.  Maybe a stop payment will get their attention.

I could go on and on about this.

Hello Ebay...

This is what I told folks to do on Monday, particularily if you used a debit card and have actually funds withdrawn from your account.  You may give up your A-Z rights, but so what if you get your money back today.   What is Amazon going to tell your bank--that the product could still arrive?  They already know the score and are just following their bureaucratic procedures at this point and earning interest on your money (while you pay it!).  If your bank wants more proof, print out a copy of this entire thread for their investigation

I would also advise other folks to look at some of the eBay auctions if you are serious about a Z6K since you could probably get one with shipping for about $420--that's only $40 above the magic $379.

I am persuaded. I called my bank. it will be 10 business days before they finish processing this (debit card). That seems better to me than to begin processing with amazon on the 29th of december. screw it. I can get a 6kfor a decent price someplace, or at worst an 860 from pricejapan (not a bad worst, is it?) I want my money back and i want quit of this whole thing. I ended up here because I wanted x window stuff on a vga screen, on a box with 64 megs o ram .  The fastest way to acheive that (within financial reason) is the best.
I'll let you k now how it comes out.
others who get chargebacks and refunds please post (maybe with the name of the card or bank?) so we have evidence for companies that are skeptical?
That means a refund the 23rd for me I hope.

last letter to amazon:

I have contacted my bank to retreive my funds. since you are aware that you brokered a fraudulent sale, and already intend to apply the a-z guarantee and refund my money, and since the a-z refund process cannot be started until the 29th, this seemed best for me.  I understand that your regulations do not allow faster processing, despite your recognition that this is a scam rather than a sale. Nonetheless, I do not see that you have a right to $305.99 of my money for a second past the time your vendor disappeared.  In recognition of the fact that it is MY money, I have initiated steps to collect it.  This is not a condemnation of Amazon.com or its a-z policies.  Please do your best to expedite this process.

Well,
I can't say I blame you all. To be honest, unless Amazon offered me some reason to wait until THEY sorted it out to get my money back such as a gift certificate etc. I would have bailed through my CC company on day one.

I will say this...  It will be no terrible thing if you let this experience poison you against Amazon. However do yourselves and your pocketbooks a favor and don't let that disfavor carry over the the SL-6000L.  It was just as much a victim of circumstances as you all were.

I see some of you in the wake of this disaster are thinking of maybe buying a C860.  I've owned/used both the C860 and the 6000L and due to the MANY advantages it offers I ditched the C860 and purchased (3) SL-6000L's (I use two and one is new/never been out of the box to be sold eventually).  For the details on why this is so, just click on my member name and read my back posts.

The MAIN reason I'm saying this to you all that were hurt in the scam is that the 6k represents the BEST financial option to what you were hoping for at the price you were hoping to get it.  Do the EBAY thing, purchase from trusted vendors, or put ads up in the ForSale/Wanted forum here on ZUG- My bet is there are also a LOT of ZUG members that for some reason or another heard about the huge Amazon sales before the masses because of this and bought extras like me. Even at the current going Ebay prices it is at least $125 cheaper than the high end clamshells.

Now having said all this if the situation were reversed and the C860 were cheaper you may wish to go that route.... but because of the advantages I personally would STILL purchase the 6000L!  YMMV but after you've made your decision and the money is gone.... you might find yourself wishing you had taken the other pill.

So screw Amazon!  Just don't screw yourselves in the process.

Good Luck and God Bless guys!

-NeuroShock

This is my first post... I have been lurking here for a while....

I own a computer business in Mexico...  Figuring that the $379 Z was at a hot price I ordered 8 from Amazon (for resale).  They were split into two orders of 4 each.  Apparantly Amazon had a max order total of 4.  Well after seeing that the Z's were for $300 from this jpettins guy, I cancelled my order with amazon and ordered 8   Z's from jpettins.

This happened on Dec. 1st. Have not seen anything as of today, and I am out over $2440!!!!

This is the first time that I have been scammed, it sux.  At least you guys that only ordered 1 at $306, should feel a little better knowing that I lost 8 times the amount of $.

So jpettins made off pretty big.  How much?  18 from offroadgeek's tally, 1 from taronish, 3 Alloutte+son, and now 8 from milo617.

That's 30*$300=$9000 plus probably a whole lot more we don't know about.  Not bad for a couple days "work"

Post by: adf on December 10, 2004, 10:08:18 am
Neuro,
I don't think pettins was a zugger. I think the Fla vendor of z's for 300 might be the same scammer as pettins. But I think pettins was pretty simple.... looking at hes dec. 2nd listings he had a bunch o stuff in the 300 range. he moved it till amazon cut him off.. and he split.. by evening iof the 3rd.
The NY vendor who knew our thead might wee be someone who reads inhere, but my guess..afte I last posted, was that he assumed that pettins had been busted from a cursory reading of the thread.. You are right that pettins almost certainly CAN't have been busted yet...and probably won't ever be....
There was no need for pettins to string us along. he just answered his mail for 1 day and then left... It just seemed worse to us.

I was hoping to do a power book thing too .. maybe I spooked the 3000 fla selller??

I'll keep at it. anyone else with free time should too. Just be sure to use a yahoo or hotmail address (one of the reason's isuspect the guy above) and fake info to ave yourself the risk of identity theft in your dealings.

I would SO MUCH liked you guys to have been able to string him along like the famous P-P-P-P-Powerbook thread!

Heh.  P-P-P-Powerbook... heh... (that WAS a great one).

Well, being a patient person, I'm going to go through Amazon to get my money back.  However, I folded and grabbed a 6k from eBay since the seller was close by and I could meet in person for a cash transaction (lol--I felt almost illicit meeting this fellow, walking over to his car, and exchanging a fat envelope full of bills for a nondescript box of Zaurus, but we were both very OK with the deal, he let me open the box and look at everything before accepting, and I counted the money for him and included a business card--sean_wxx on eBay; I think he may have his last one on sale now).

What a disappointment from Amazon.  I feel like we just aren't able to contact the right problem-solvers in customer service; I think Offroadgeek's attempts are the right way to go, though...

vputz,
I'm sure you'll get you money back.
As to Amazon, I think they crack down on this stuff sporadically. There doesn't seem to be much of a system... and they don't really care- as far as I can tell. They have their guarantee, and so the customer has some assurance- and I guess this stuff doesn't make their books bad enough for them to do something about it. Are they still spending investor's money, or do they turn a profit yet?

This is an update on my earlier post to this thread.  I was the victim of a similar scam about a month ago.  I bought and was credited for my SL 6000 on Nov. 5th.  I was able to file a request for a refund on Dec. 1st.  I received an e-mail notification from Amazon today (Dec. 10th) that I had been refuned the total cost including shipping.  However my credit card company does not show the transation yet.  This should give people an idea of the response time in these cases.  I hope this helps.

$400 cash.  I figured if I bought the $379 from Amazon and paid for same-day shipping, it would be about as much, and I had the satisfaction of meeting my buyer, who seemed like a nice fellow.  So while it wasn't a $300 Z, I was still satisfied.

Now I want to slap OZ onto it, but I'm nervous about the suspend/resume problems I'm hearing from the OZ message board, so I'm not doing ANYTHING with it yet... lol.

Theres a few Zaurus 6000l at Ebat for around 375 - 400.

What is the general consensus - is it worth going for it, or is somebody who is aware of us fools falling for $3000 Zaurii is now baiting us with a more realistic but juicy price of sub $400 ?

Should I go for ebay ? How reliable is it ?Like with Amazon I know my money will be refunded, I have never really used ebay for puchases.

Ebay has some type of insurance, but it is pretty lame, and low value I believe.

If you buy via ebay and pay thru paypal then paypal will back you for up to $500 (Conditions apply, see paypal for details).

I noticed that some of my transactions had this gaurantee and some did not (tells you for sure right before you go to pay).

I personally have used this system and it is okay, but not great, and they don't cover "Quality of Item" issues.  Like if the screen is all scratched, then you are pretty much on your own.  However, there is still the Credit card  avenue with paypal (just make sure that the money is extracted from your credit card and not you bank account and not through "paypal funds" you've built up....only credit card withdrawels are covered by credit card companies.)  To ensure this, you could setup a NEW paypal account under a spouses name and use a different credit card.  Then the money would have to be extracted through the card.  Still all very comlicated though, since you essentially need to work everything through the other persons name, just in case.

Best bet is to get a seller with a good history and a LONG history on Ebay.

However, I would be wary of anyone selling these for less than $400 (unless they are used/opened).  Resaon being is that a new one at $379 would have to be sold above $400 to make a profit,  Both Amazon, Ebay and Paypal take a commission, so unless the seller bought the unit for themselves and tried it but never got into it (and willing to take a loss),  I can't see  how a person buying/selliing could make a profit on a new one unlesss it sold for more than $400.  (Closer to $425 at a bare minimum (before shipping)).

This guy looks pretty Legitimate.  (I have no association with this person, not even as a customer...so there is still (always) risk involved):

This seller fits the criteria for a relatively low-risk buy at a decent price (although  insane shpping cost).

1) He's got long history
2) Lots of feedback (not perfect, but read the negs and see what the issue was, I haven't).
3) Selling at a profit (assuming a $379 purchase)

oh, crap, just noticed a $25 shipping fee.....OUCH.

Damn !!

Well, here's the link if anyone doesn't mind the $450+ price tag:

Click here for a Seller on Ebay with many unit and with a 7900+ feedback  (about 22 negs total) (http://search.ebay.com/sharp-6000L_W0QQsofocusZbsQQsbrftogZ1QQsorecordsperpageZ25QQfromZR10QQsacategoryZ-1Q26catrefQ3DC6QQsotrtypeZ1QQsotrvalueZ1QQsellerZ1QQsassZcircuit4sureQQsosortproyZ1Q26sosortorderQ3D1QQcoactionZcompareQQcopagenumZ1QQcoentrypageZsearch)

Well, personally I've been buying and selling on Ebay for 5+ years and this was my first experience with Amazon Marketplace.  My next Z will almost certainly come from Ebay unless I see one I like in the "For Sale" section of this forum.

Some things to keep in mind about Ebay though.:

1.  Expect to be on your own.  Although there is some kind of insurance you should plan on it being useless.  I actually do expect Amazon to eventually live up to their guarantee.

2.  The real action on an auction doesn't happen untill the last few hours/minutes so just because there some Z's for sale at $400 currently don't think they are going to actually end up at that price.  In fact when I've sold things, the ones I started out low are the ones that finished highest. Because of this it's not unusual or a sign of a scam to see an expensive item start off at $0.99  or whatever. Check out previous completed auctions to see what the going price is.

3.  Newbies especially tend to overpay on Ebay.  There's always another one out there.

4.  Look at the seller's history, not just the score but look at what the problems were and what kinds of things the seller was selling.  To me a seller who's been on ebay for a year or more is better than one who has only been around a few months but has racked up a high score.

5.  Don't assume anything.  Dont assume anything!   Also don't buy complicated things like laptops unless you really know what you're doing.  People won't tell you that it's missing the power cube or whatever unless you ask so if it matters to you then ask.

6.  There are some really great folks on Ebay.  I  bought some Laserjet printer repair kits from ricks66gs on Wednesday and had them in hand on Friday.  That's better than Newegg!

Well, because I was stupid enough to leave a my PM screen open on my browser and walk away, my wife took one look at how much the 6k was worth and that I had one laying around unused and spazzed.  She is making me list my extra 6000L for sale immediately rather than waiting until January as I had planned.  (Wiz had innocently inquired as to when and how much I would be selling it for.)

It is now listed in the "For Sale/Wanted" Forum here on the ZUG and it will remain there for a week or until it is sold, whichever is less.  It will then be listed on Ebay for the masses.  (The only concession my wife allowed me was to give Zuggers a shot at it first.)

It isn't a $300 deal by any means, but it is a very safe transaction from a known source if anyone is interested.  Maybe it will take the sting out of someone done wrong by jpettins.

*sigh*  It totally SUCKS to be in the dog house during Christmas time!

I already emailed that one...
I'm really not sure it is a network... it "feels" more like some morons learned a few tricks and repeat them.. kinda the way homo erectus spred the use of fire, I think.

I'm not getting a sense of sophisticatio, adaptability or polish from these guys.  In fact they really seem....like stupid ignorant criminals.

We are like the people in those folger's coffee ads.... "You took a date out for an expensive meal and are trying to show off..how'd you like the coffee?"  We were blinded by circumstance. thinking that:
 A. Amazon is pretty reliable
. Linux people are generally honest (opensource n stuff..)and Z is a niche product..we are outta the line of fire.
 C) Amazon's "rating"system was meaningful and thet their long term at a glance stuff reflected some identifiable reality.

remember..jpettins was at least rated.

these guys are brand new.

Anyway, take away the assumptions..be looking for fraud and it is completely transparent.

We were working within those assumtions and looking for Zaurii, not fraud.....
But like the guy in the commercial saying the feezedried coffee was amazing, we tend to think the scammers are sharp because they scammed us.  Not so.

Do not order from amaz_s25.  The following are with amaz_s16...

I asked it was available still (amazon showing 0).  He said it was, but I would have to go through "SquareTrade" ...  I was over zealous and gave him my shipping addy before I did much more research.  I looked more into "SquareTrade" and sent him this e-mail

>disregard.  I am no longer interested in this transaction.  I'm sorry, but as square
>trade is a mediation service and not an actually buyer protection program, I will
>have to decline unless you would care to conduct the transaction through paypal,
>ebay, or amazon.

I haven't heard a word from him since.  I also had conversations with facibine16 and read that ridiculious "western union is only accepted payment because it lowers risk of fraud" excuese.  After I turned them down, I heard nothing further...

Steer clear of any of the itterations of facibineXX or amaz_sXX.  They both are scammers from what I've seen.

The dam seems to have broken that held back the millions of amateur scammers and they are obviously out in force for the holidays.  But I agree with the above assessment, these guys aren't in the same league as jpettins.  These are rank amatuers in comparison.

On a brighter note, the 6k I was selling above was purchased by a family that had been caught in the jpettins deal.  They had actually purchased several of them and had been fortunate to find replacements on Ebay from a seller who had a long standing good track record of dependability and from  myself.  I'm very happy they have been able to put this debacle behind them.  Their Z's have ended up costing them a few more dollars but at least the space under the Christmas tree won't be quite so empty.

My hope and prayers are that the rest of you will find financial resolution by Christmas Day at the latest so that this won't stain your holiday any worse than it already has!

I wish you all the best of luck and I'm really grateful for all the work you guys are continuing to do in identifiying the scammers for the rest of the ZUG community here during the Holidays.  It's become a very positive outgrowth of a very negative experience.

God Bless you all and Many Thanks,

God, how awful can Amazon be at this.

They should just stick to selling DIRECT and not encourage or involve 3rd party sellers.

The ebay is eBay and Amazon is Amazon and never the twain shall meet ....

Anyways, I moved on over to ebay and hooked a 6000L at  $415 (including shipping). Actually this seller seems genuine, cause I mispaid (paid lesser) and he refunded the earlier payment and I made the new payment again. If he was a fraud, he could just do away with the 5 dollar lesser amount and not bother refunding etc just for that small amount.

BTW, he seems to have another unit left too, so anybody interested
can email the seller
ebay2600@hotmail.com.

I am in no way affliated or even know this seller, and I am praying and keeping my fingers crossed that this does turn out to be a clean deal... after getting burned by Amazon.

Too bad I couldnt get a 6000L for $300

ah, not realy - at least not right now, and certainly not even thinking of it till I ACTUALLY get my 6000L in my hands.

God, it seems this 6000L is a slippery product for me to lay my hands on nice and clean...
Planning to port the PDAXROM over to the 750 and use the 6000L as a standard workable handheld.

Is everyone waiting for Amazon grace period (for the seller to scram), contacted their credit card company, or something else?

Seller had some positive feedback yesterday. More astroturfing? Preparing for a fresh scam? Any way to track those leaving feedback?

We've done some of that.  Basically Amazon has to handle these things better. The feedback is almost certainly bogus.  None of us has received any package nor notice nor anything but the by now famous amazon blow-off. I contacted my bank. It looks like many or even most of the people here did too, and already bought other 6000's. I am watching 3000 prices on pricejapan and thinking it over.

I'm waiting for amazon to provide the refund.  Even though they should know this is an obvious scam, they probably have to wait out the period as described in the a-z policy for insurance reasons.

From whom did you get it? I won a bid on one on Sunday from shanetso, who seems a reputable seller. I would get some peace of mind if got it from him...
Thing is I was also going to get one from Amazon the last night the $378 ones were on sale, but I'm in Guatemala Central America. First I had to get the physical address of a friend who lives in the US so I left the purchase pending until the next morning but then they were gone! Then I was tempted to get one from jpettins. Thanks God I did not! I checked his background and he had been selling ET novels for $0.01 to build up his rating! So I did not trust him.
Wanting a Zaurus so badly (I have been using Linux since 1993) but not happy to pay $700 for a Zaurus I just came to the ZUG on December 1st, when Amazon had sold their last one, jpettins was doing his thing and OZ finally supported the 6k. I then decided to go the ebay route but it is my first purchase there. Being abroad makes you think not twice but many times to go on a bid.
I hope my 6k deal comes to an end nicely as yours did.
PD: I got mine for $395 on a slow Sunday bid. All the other I have tracked have been sold for $405, I always losing them for 5 to 10 bucks.

Hey Borak.. with the brand comes an implicit assurance of quality control. we've been over this. I agreed to buy from a 3rd party seller they endorsed...  their endorsement turned out to be worthless.. More to the point they know that there is no product in shipment. The point at which they know should be the point at which their guarantee kicks in.  I don't owe them loyalty or money or a right to control my funds given that they steered me to a fraud under their brand, and they do not take immediae action withintheir policy to rectify the situation, but rather employ the letter (one possible interpretation thereof) rather than the evident intent implicit inthe gurantee to my least advantage. I have posted several nearly identical frauds on this thread in part as a demonstration of amazon's poor quality control and/or indifference to its customers.  I agree that they have a right to be bad at business.. I do not agree that I owe them charity or support as a result, nor that this interpretation of their transaction guarntee is correct. In fact, in my account, on that order, I am theoretically able to aplly for the a-z now..according to them. yet not so by their recent email. which is is right? The one that lets you make snide comments?  They are a mess. Period. I want my money out of their hands and in mine, where it belongs.  Do you really have a problem with that?  Did you miss the part about 2 business day guarntee shipping as part of their policy?  Do you beleive the z's were shipped? If not and all parties know that to be the case what does that imply, given that it was written as a guaranteed part of my transaction?  do you just beleive that whatever a big business says must be true because they are big...even when they contradict themselves?

Sorry, didn't mean to be so subtle.  It was a reference some of the earlier hyperbole where a vocal few seemed willing to settle for nothing less than Jeff Bezos' head on a platter, policies be damned.

I questioned the logic and rationalism of such a stand, but certainly respect their right to rant, human nature being what it is...

I just finished going through this thread.

Man, am I lucky!  I ordered a Z from 3rd party Amazon, then found a seller on ZUG 15 minutes later.  All this happened in Late Nov, before Pettins got on board.  It took about 5 emails, but this completely different seller looked legitimate.

Well I just got off the phone with Amazon.  At this point I am really disappointed with Amazon's response to this case.  A-Z gaurantee, blah blah, it's not past my latest possible delivery date, blah blah.  The person on the phone actually tried to tell me I might still get my item by the 24th.  I laughed at her.  I realize she's just a phone drone and doesn't care about the situation, but still.

C'mon, give me a break.  You know that chances are Amazon is the one that closed jpettins shop down and they probably caught the fraud before he got a penny of the Z monies.  Now they are just sitting on our cash and giving us the A-Z bullplop story.  Ya gotta wait 4 weeks, no really.

I believe that I'll be able to get my money back from Amazon, but damn, I wish I didn't have to deal with it during my holidays.

12/19
on amazon.com stoobieselectronics ( a new seller) is selling a z6k for 498
on ebay.com stoobie777 (stoobies electronics) is selling the sam thing for 413

The appear to be the same seller, unless the amazon one is a clever "id mimic" using a proven ebay vandor not currenlty on amazon.
what does that say? That the general concensus is that amazon buyers are..dim? gullible?
sigh.

PZee's theory would go a long way tyo explaining why amazon doesn't have a few simple, obvious, fraudstopper policies in place.  I had wondered why similar frauds seem to keep cropping up, ie scummsucker@yahoo,com addresses. If it was not in amazon's interest to prevent them  eg--they were good at catching them and held payments for a tiny profit over a  month anyway this would be  "good business" in the contemporary American sense (no responsibilty/maximize short term yeild at any future cost--hire Arthur Anderson).

Oh BTW, I noticed on Amazon's site that when you attempt to invoke the A-Z gaurantee through the web site (Through that "Problems with your order?" link) it says you have to wait at least 30 days from the day you placed the order.

On the phone they have been telling me (and I assume others) that you need to wait a couple days after the last delivery day which is only 23 days or so.   I've tried to submit a claim but it yells at me over the 30 day thing.

Next week, when the delivery period expires I suggest that everyone call Amazon rather than try to submit online because it will probably deny your request and tell you to come back in January.  I hope that next week the CSRs don't tell me to call back in Jan, I think I'd throw a fit

  Hello,

The company i reprezent only accepts Western Union Money Order , due to some frauds which took place in the past. In order to provide you with safety also , we decided to colaborate with Amazon on concluding the deals as following.
We have an account opened to Amazon , which provides secure deals and insurance for buyers which make the payment by Western Union. To proceed with this , we need your personal details ( Name , Adress, State, City , Zip , Country ).
We deliver the product to Amazon , and as soon as they receive it they are sending you a confirmation about it , and that you can safely send the payment to us using Western Union Money Order. As soon as we receive the payment , we contact Amazon about delivering the product to you.
In case we deny that you have sent the payment , you can prove to Amazon
that you made it by your receipt for Western Union , and they will return you the lost funds at once.
We believe that this way is working great for both parts and safe at the same time.
Thank you and waiting for your reply at once

Hey Guys,

Hmmm...lets take a few moments out and have some fun with this.

First of all yes it would be illegal to make a fake WESTERN UNION financial document of any kind.  It is NOT illegal however to make a WEZTERN UNION document, and as this writer is obviously a non native English language speaker I'm sure we can come up with something similar that would probably be close enough to pass muster with them. (notice he likes to use Z's instead of S's? Probably a Russian or a Breakaway Soviet State citizen.)

Having said this, let me clarify myself a bit as I have sat on a jury that decided a case where a similar thing was done illegally.  The law specifies that it is illegal to make a document with the intent of using it to financially defraud the recipient by using intentionally deceptive methods.  While this language seems pretty concrete it is actually pretty ambiguous and far reaching when you get right down to it. But forget all the misc. stuff about the legalities and simply understand this:

1.  In order to be legal it cannot be an exact duplicate as I stated above, (but something different but close is fine).

AND

2. We cannot use it to defraud this Amazon "Vendor" of his money or any item he may be selling for "financial gain". (read: if he actually SENDS us the Zaurus we must immediately return it. And we would need absolute proof/evidence that we indeed did return it- certified mail return receipt requested etc.)

My instincts are that we won't have to worry about returning it because it will never arrive.

Now here is the downside of the plan.  Every Western Union money transfer has an identification number, (it's plainly on your receipt), and surely what this guy would do is to call Western Union and check to see if the number is legit- especially if he is in doubt.  That would sink us UNLESS one of us actually BOUGHT a REAL money transfer from WU (sending the money to a safe destination such as your wife, parents etc.) for the exact amount we need.  Then we simply copy the id number over to our "Weztern Union" document, this will make it seem more legit.  Just do NOT have your relative cash it until after the joke is over because if they do call and it's already been "delivered" and cashed they will tell him on the phone.  So if anyone decides to do this they will have their $300 tied up for a few days and will be out the price of the transfer fee.

Ok I've had a bit of fun telling you how to manage some of the details so now I've got to pull the rug out from under you and show you why it'll never work!  It's simple.  He sells his product through amazon.com.  You buy it and send the money order to AMAZON.COM not to him.  So he'll never see the "fake" document and Amazon will pass the attempt directly to the FBI the moment they see it and it all blows up in your face!  And Irony of Ironies - you the innocent citizen who was trying to punish the "scammer" go to jail, while Amazon.com's system completely protects the "Scammer" from not only the fake money order but also from our best attempts to give him the spanking he deserves!

Welcome to AMAZON.COM!

Where you can get less for more.

Again, just for carrying on the fun (and relishing in the though of giving the scammers back in their own coin)

The email quote from the scammers says
"We deliver the product to Amazon , and as soon as they receive it they are sending you a confirmation about it , and that you can safely send the payment to us using Western Union Money Order. As soon as we receive the payment , we contact Amazon about delivering the product to you."

So the "Weztern Union" money order does go to the vendor and not to Amazon, I make out.

Just received an e-mail from Amazon saying that they've refunded the $305.99 to my card after processing the A to Z guarantee . I forgot how many times I had to call up before I could get them to process this before their stipulated time. Anyway, for my pains they gave me $ 15 + 20 + 20 = $55 worth of promotional certificates ( on 3 different occasions).
One thing I found interesting was that whenever I called Amazon during the daytime, I always got CSRs who were not very helpful and in fact one of them was outright rude; but whenever I called at night (I am located in the Midwest BTW, EST), I was able to speak to CSRs who were polite and genuinely tried to solve the problem and even offered me the above mentioned promotional certificates. The fact that these CSRs were Indian, as I am too, did not have anything to do with this, I hope
Here's to hoping that the rest of you who were duped too get refunded ASAP.
Happy Holidays.

I just called Amazon to process their a-z guarantee, and I pretended to be very upset about the whole thing and the guy said I would get reimbursed (for both orders) within 2 days.  He said that I would get an email within an hour with the details of the reimbursment.  I'm not sure why he told me 2 days vs. the 1 - 2 weeks others are getting.

When the first guy was done processing the reimbursments, I asked to be transferred to a supervisor.  I told the supervisor that I knew at least 20 people who purchased well over 30 Zs from this fraud jpettins and asked if there was anything that Amazon could do for all of us.  At first he said that each individual should call into Amazon and they would process the a-z guarantee.  I reminded him that they would do that anyway, and asked if there was anything else that they could do for the group.  He said that he couldn't give out a bulk gift certificate, but that he could do the following...

For each person that was screwed by jpettings, call into 1-800-201-7575 and tell them to view the comments for the following order number:  058-3867722-2293929.  The comments should tell them to give you each a $20 gift certificate.  They will of course need to check your Amazon account to make sure that you did indeed purchase a Z from this jpettins.

It's not much, but at least it's a small consolation for the crap everyone went through.

Happy Holidays!

You are a champ ORG.

That worked like a charm - initailly the Amazon guy just wouldnt talk to me about another order so I asked for the supervisor too, and then he went in saying he couldnt disclose whatever was there - I said fine, but unless you look at it you wouldnt know what is in there in the comments. After a lot of huffing-and-puffing about it he did at least agree to look it up and also did give me the gift certificate.

But its still the 1-2 weeks refund period for me.

So thanks to you, even it its a small consolation for such crap that we took for nearly a month (with the A-Z processing time and all that).

Afterthought :  After checking that I did indeed get the $20 gift certificate, I went ahead and donated $20 dollars for the US Red Cross for the Asian disaster relief (thru Amazon). At least that makes the whole sour deal seem a little less sour for me.

You'll hear from us within the next 1-2 weeks.
That bastard... he specifically told me 1 - 2 business days!  Oh well, I figured he was mis-quoting the policy, as everyone else here was saying 1 - 2 weeks.

Since I'm bored at work, I figured I should call amazon to complain (that's what americans do when we're bored, right?).  I acted very frustrated and asked why the previous guy had quoted me 1 - 2 days for processing.  Long story short, he gave me a $20 promotional certificate.

I wonder how many I can get out of them if I keep calling in to complain?

I just called them back and spoke to a team lead (sudhir).  He confirmed that the notes the previous team lead about issueing $20 promotional gift certs to each of the persons screwed by jpettins is indeed in my contact comments

Maybe Heather B was just lazy or simply didn't like you... who knows, people are weird (all except me).

Sudhir said that each of the 20 people should do the following:

1.  Call Amazon at that nifty 800 #
2.  Provide your order number (the one for the 6000 purchase with jpettins)
3.  Confirm all of your security crap (how many security questions do they *really* need to ask???)
4.  Demand the $20 promotional gift certificate
5.  Refer the amazon person to my order number, and specifically to the "contact comments" area:
058-3867722-2293929
6.  Be happy as a pig in shit (or as happy as you can be after all this)

BTW - I let Sudhir know that I never received my first $20 promotional cert from the first team lead, and he gave me one on the spot... actually read me the code over the phone.

Also, he was a really nice guy.    We were chatting and he mentioned that he lived in a coastal town in India, and that the residents of this town were ordered to evacuate because they are expecting more trouble (I think another earthquake, though I'm not sure).  Apparently he (and his family) have decided to stick it out.   I found this out near the end of the call.... after I had complained and complained about people not getting, and how Heather B. called me a liar, blah blah blah, me me me.  All the while this poor guy (and many others) are being as sweet as they can to complainers like me while their whole livelihood may be in jeopardy.

Thanks, will call.
I must, however, reflect for a moment that the southern, or perhaps texan heather b. probably makes 10x what sudir does, and she doesn't even do her job. yipee global economy.

Ok. got it. Thanks. Very much Offroad.
As a hint to others experiencing difficulty, I still had to really push the csr to actually read offraod's order comments. If I hadn't been extemely inistant I would yet be living by the word of Heather B. Once again, some ( a decent enough guy in the end though) one from the southern us.

FWIW when I called  I spoke with a CSR named Carl and he got the ball rolling on the refund without any fuss and he told me it would take 1 to 2 weeks for my refund to show up.  I then mentioned the possibility of a $20 gift certificate for my troubles and asked him to look at the notes in the order # provided by OG.  He asked me to hold on a minute and when he came back he was willing to give me that $20 as well.  I don't really know of course if he actually read the notes or just went for coffee but I didn't push it.  The gift certificate (signed by Carl) showed up within 15 minutes and a confirmation that my A-Z claim had been filed showed up right after (no sig).   About 10 minutes later I got a second confirmation from a CSR named Lauri who also claimed to have filed a A-Z claim for me.  This second confirmation read more like it was a response to one of my earlier emails but that would be a heck of a coincidence.  I'm not sure what to make of that but it does look like I have at least one refund coming.

I called amazon not long after ORG posted the details for the certificate.  I had no problem with my CSR.  I didn't post earlier because the account is under my wife's and she just confirmed the confirmation emails.

Amazon claims to be processing the A-Z guarrantee and I got the promotional certificate without any fuss.

The two lessons I learned are: (1) Be wary of third party selllers on amazon.com and (2) pick up the phone and talk to a CSR. After my third round of e-mailing amazon support telling them that their canned/scripted responses to my queries were not acceptable or helpful, they stopped responding. I was hoping to see how long it would take to actually get a real human-generated e-mail response. Maybe, I'll never know.

On the other hand, the  Indian woman on the phone that handled my A-Z request was very courteous and professional.

Because of the holidays I was not able to file the A-Z guarantee until the 27th although I could have filed as early as the 24th.  I called in today to check on the status and the CSR Cindy said that it would be a few more days.  She did give me the $20 GC after checking the order mentioned in the previous posts.  Still have to wait to get back my $2440!!!!!!!!

Supposedly I get my refund the 10th. 39 days after the purchase. somewhere between 32 and 38 days since the fraud was known.  It will be nice to get the refund. I am less than thrilled with the time.

Got my refund. yippeee.

It is nice that the A-Z really works and that Amazon kept their side of the deal.  I would wish for better fraud response, but this is at least reassuring.

I will research 3rd party sellers much more closely now, though.
