Title: Authoritative information about Linux with Zaurus SL-5600.
Post by: troywill on January 01, 2004, 08:58:31 pm
Hi,
I\'m a Linux user ( Mandrake 9.2 ) who has been trying to sync my Zaurus SL-5600 with my Linux computer. Ironically, Sharp has no software or documentation about syncing the SL-5600 with Linux. There are some web pages that mention networking/syncing a Linux computer with a Zaurus but I think they only work with the 5500 model, not the SL-5600.

I have a web page at http://grantlinux.com/sl5600.html (http://grantlinux.com/sl5600.html) where I am putting some links to authoritative information about the SL-5600 model. If anyone has a link or some useful information to pass long please email me ( troy AT troywill DOT com ) and it will put it on my page.

In particular, I believe that:
1. There is no way to ftp a file to stock SL-5600.
2. There is no way to sync with Qtopia on a Linux computer.

I bet there are people wasting time trying to do these 2 things when they are in fact impossible.

Troy

1. try using samba on linux to connect to sharp roms v 3.1 (whats on the 5600), or install ssh
2. For Sharp rom true. If you use OZ, it will sync using Qtopia Desktop from Trolltech

Try looking through the Howtos and FAQs on this website.

The problem seems to be that the Howtos and FAQs are outdated (for the 5600). For example, there is an FAQ that states the Zaurus has a ftp server running on port 4242. Well, I think thay may apply to the 5500, but the 5600 has no running ftp server, not even a ftp binary. I wonder how many schmucks like me have spent hours trying to ftp into the 5600 because of that? If I am wrong, and there is a FAQ or HOWTO that adresses ftp on a default 5600 please point it out to me.

Whatever the case, I\'ll put the answer about ftp at http://www.grantlinux.com/sl5600.html (http://www.grantlinux.com/sl5600.html)

The FAQs and Howtos should be fairly up to date as a few others and I trawled through them about 3 months ago.

If you have some examples that are misleading then please point them out and I will fix them if someone else doesn\'t get to it first.

BTW, the SL5500 with the latest Sharp ROM doesn\'t have FTP builtin either.

mandrake 9.2 did not uninstall software. It\'s just small bug in menu, just type in xterm (as root) command: ]update-menus -v
It will recover lost menu items. There is a way to do this from GUI, I do not remember comletely, but it is something like:
  edit menu -] save
Hope it helps.
