Hi,
I have installed the latest version of the Cack ROM for the SL5500.
Apart for being a bit slower in loading things from the SD, which was expected, I saw anoticeable slowdown also in resuming and in samba activities.
When I resume the unit, it takes around 5-10 seconds, after the unit is lit, before it becomes useable (ie: I see the gui, but it is frozen)
And when I connect the Z with samba, all the file transfer activities are noticeably slower comparedto my previous experience with the TKC ROM copying to SD.
I do not know if the resume problem is related to the slow SD, but the samba problem should not.
Any iea on what could I do to improve the system speed?
Thank you,
Ciao,
Adalberto

Yes,
I do
I installed the ROM on my C700 and noticed also that the device was a lot slower afterwards.
What was the problem? Cacko makes a lot of apps \"fast load\" by default which costs a lot of memory, thus slowing down the device. Simply uncheck the \"fastload\" box of the apps that you don\'t use so much!
It seems that replacing the Cacko Kernel with Sukoshi\'s Kernel could speed up the device significantly, but I haven\'t found out how to do that. My question in the forum remains unanswered so far :cry:
Greetz,

The Sukoshi is for the CXXX devices, right?
I could not found any reference to it with the search function.
My problem is that I have a 5500
Thanks for the suggestion, altough I find it strange that a fastloaded app slow the operations down. This is the same with the standard 32/32 ROM, and it is definetly not so slow!
Even considering the SD slowdown, this is too much!
I got back to the tKC ROM1 and created a 20mb swap in RAM.
Now I have almost the same available ram but a much more responsive system!

@kuijer001
1) download the sukoshi-kernel
2) untar the tools.tar from the cacko-rom
3) replace the kernel in tools/sl-c700 with sukoshi\'s kernel
4) backup your Z
5) relash your Z
hope this helps...
@amdonati
i experienced the same slowness with my c700 when samba was active. undoing \"fast-load\"
didn\'t improve things and I never figured out how to solve this...

Samba may be slow because it is doing a regular \'sync\' when writing files. This is how it is setup as default in the Sharp ROM, but Proto turned it off in the tkcROM.
In the Sharp ROM at least there is a Samba config file: /usr/lib/samba/smb.conf
In that the following lines must be commented out
strict sync = yes
sync always = yes
If that file does not exist, you could try creating it and putting the following lines in it:
strict sync = no
sync always = no
As for the slow resume and suspend, what is in /etc/apm.d/resume.d and /etc/apm.d/suspend.d if those directories exist at all?

Cider101
thanx for the response, now I\'m getting somewere. Just one more question: do I hace to re-tar the tools-dir after replacing the kernel?
-
cider101,
the kernel, is that the file called zImage.bin, located in the tools/kernel-sl-700 dir?
-
@kuijer001
yes, the zImage.bin is the kernel
use \"tar -cf tools.tar tools\" to recreate the tar file
@tumnus
it\'s not the file-transfer which feels slow but the whole Z
top shows 4 \"qt-samba\" processes consuming most of cpu&ram....
-
Cool!
Thanx cider101. I\'ll let you know how things work out

Sorry the last reply, that was me.

I noticed a slowdown when resuming, especially when you\'ve got a bluetooth CF card in the slot. I end up waiting about 20 seconds before my Zaurus is usable.
-
Foxdie, I am in the same situation as you.
I have a BT CF card in.
At the end I went back to tkc rom1, it is the rom that worked better for me!
While waiting a ROM with the a 2.6 kernel that will allow me to use my Hitachi microdrive without the \"resume/suspend\" issue.
