Title: Problem with the Sharp media player on tkc ROM

Whenever I try to play an mp3 file the playlist view vanishes and I get Qtopia, but the player is still open. If I hit cancel then the playlist pops up. Here is what I get from the command line.

At this point I get dumped to the prompt, but the player is still open. If I click the icon on the taskbar the playlist view comes back up. However I can play .wav files. All the video files work too. In the playlist (and in the files tab) view the mp3s have only a generic documents icon. Recenlty I installed gaim and had a problem where its icon didn\'t show up. I found a post here that gave the following fix.

Don\'t install libpng, instead make a symlink to libqte.

I don\'t if the gaim problem is related to the media player.

The app is not still open. When Qtopia apps crash they tend to leave the icon behind on the taskbar and tapping the icon relaunches the app.

libpng has nothing to do with playing mp3s.
It looks like the media player doesn\'t like how your mp3s have been encoded. I\'ve heard of problems with variable bitrate encoding and bit rates that are less than 64KB/s or greater than 196KB/s. Try a few different combinations of encoding to see if any work.

My MP3s are encoded at 192B/s, and I know this encoding format works because I could play all these songs with the Sharp Media Player before switching to the tkc ROM.

i have the same problem with tkc ROM and the Media Player they provide as optional downlaod.

This is quite normal for all Qtopia/Opie apps. Ignore it (or try something else which does work and see the similarity).

What kind of binary is this? As a guess, you might be running (or trying to) an ARM5 binary (XScale) on an ARM4 machine (SA1110)

Yeah i got tkcROM and installed SharpMedia package that came with it and it does nto work
- someone has to come up with a fix
- what other alternatives are there for MP3 players on tkc ( don\'t make me buy the tkcPlayer ) !!!

I assume Mplayer will work fine (I use it on OZ, and have used it with the Sharp 3.xx roms). Xmms should also work as a gui.

i can not get MPlayer to work either ... maybe i have the wrong version. When i start it .... it looks like it is laoding, but nothing happens.

What does it say to you (as it\'s a console app, and I\'m not quite sure how you\'re starting it)?

That\'s quite interesting - the Sharp Media player worked fine for me on the TKC ROM - but I tried to use Opie Media Player too, and when I installed that, they both stopped working. I\'ve uninstalled OPIE Media player, and the Sharp one works again! Odd!

As lardman mentions and I just found out, the mplayer+xmms combo is the best option for playing mp3s, IMO.  I provided some links in the following thread, the last of which provides links to earlier versions of xmms that work with the Sharp ROMs:

The last referenced link also provides a somwhat dated review of some of the video players available for the zaurus.
