instructions on the pdaxrom site are a bit out of date, so i updated them for an install on a c760, should be easy enough to adapt to your own model.
Extract the 3 files - initrd.bin tools.tar updater.sh - to the root of your CF or SD/MMC card.
Make sure the Zaurus isn't plugged into AC power.
Remove battery for at least 5 seconds.
Replace battery (replace battery cover, lock cover), plug in AC power.
Press and hold the "OK" button on the keyboard.
Turn the power on, you should see the Japanese service menu.
Select option 4 (flash/update).
You then have four options (1. USB, 2. CF, 3. SD, 4. Back)
press the button on the left with the 'Y' in it
Choose either option 2 or 3, depending on which media you put the files on.
the pdaxrom installer is launched.
choose option 3 NAND Flash Utils
choose option 3 fix sharp loader NAND 64MB limit (sl-c760/c860 only)
fix is applied, then you reboot
go through options again
chose option 1 resize root partition
enter 121
reboot
choose option 1 install new rom
the rom is flashed
reboot the z
at login prompt, log in as root
then startx
then calibrate the touchscreen
enjoy

on a 750
After the Rom is installed and I reboot, I get kernal panic:
VFS: Unable to mount root on 1f:02

im up and running, i had bad partition sizes, oops

I am going to update to RC-8, but you can you tell me if there is any way to avoid all my files installed on / from being erased? I have made various changes (which I can no longer remember) to various things in /etc, .fvwm, and installed many packages on / that I'd like to avoid re-installing.
I don't think the update affects /home/root, but please tell me if I am wrong.
What do other people do? Install to the SD card?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

What is the sweet spot for Root size on the c700 now with RC8?
Tried 40MB and got a flash RO system error
Tried 47MB and got a mount error on initial boot
Im trying 42MB now and zeroing in on it, but its taking a while wondering if someone had this info quicker than my flashing (and juggling my two year old).

many thanks to the pdax team..

Just tried RC8, and I really can see some improvement from the last one !
Just one thing: I can't login with ssh on the Zaurus, he asks me for a password for root...

Duh.. Should have tried 45MB, that worked on my C700. I used to have it set at 40MB before and that was working on 1.0.5. Thanks for the info!

That's due to a default config security bug that's been fixed. It's not good practice to allow logins for root when the password is blank. If you set the root password on your Zaurus (just run 'passwd' in a terminal window) then you'll be able to ssh in using that password.

zonyl -- I think I have 45 on my 700. I tried various 1.1.0-rcX and 45 was the only
one that seemed to work. I tried 47, 52, etc.
sriram -- I highly recomment using rsync to rsync the entire pda to another box.
Personally, I rsynced my 760 + 256mb sd... put 1.0.5 rom.zip (the rom it was using)
and the entire feed... onto a sigle 650mb CDR.... burned two copies, etc.

46 here on my 750 works fine, but df indicates me my / partition is 99% full...
any bigger and i have the "VFS: Unable to mount root on 1f:02" error... how i wish Ashley's script had been integrated...
-
the 750 and 700 have size issues may be a rom could be made without some of the apps, like dilo .this could just use more room and use a sd card to run apps

OK thanks for the info! I thought it would be OK by setting the AllowRootLogin and AllowBlankPassword to true, but no...

Hi, all!
The C750 Kernel in tools.tar includes a bug which limits the / size to 45MB.
After I installed the C760 Kernel on my C750, It seems to work good.
My C750's / size is 57MB now.

hine : this is something i did when i used RC3 but i reverted back when i flashed RC5 because it didn't work on my750.
Now, i'l tryinng to flash RC8. I putted updater.sh with mdpart and mdtweak (from the new installer on the first page of the post you point to) wih the files from pdaxrom rc8.
Yet i have no "option 4 : update the 750 kernel" i used to have in the modified installer.
Did you flash your kernel with the RC8 version of pdaxrom ?
UPDATE :
Oki, i tried with the 1.05 version, and it doesn't change anything. It must come from thhe installer. A bit down in he thread (page 2) Ashley deals with a specific installer for the 750 but the attachment isn't here anymore.
Does anyone have this file ? the new_installer-0.3.tar.gz ?
-
found it : http://es.geocities.com/vrsgazquez/new_installer-0.3.tar.gz (http://es.geocities.com/vrsgazquez/new_installer-0.3.tar.gz)
curently testing. i'll post feedback.
UPDATE : doesn't work... i've got a "flash pattern not recognized" error...
working on this...

Sorry but i give up... the maintenancekernel flashing messed my Z so much that it needed a nand restore ! Plus i was on my own as i've been kicked from #zaurus irc by someone (i won't say who, i don't like that sort of thing) who thought i was wrongto be worry about this precious and expensive tool that i use EVERY day for my studies, and especially tomorrow...
Dear hine, could you precise how you manage to modify your partition ?
Dear pdaxrom : could the maintenace kernel updating process be integrated in Katherin Official ?
Thanks !

Hi, Alan.
How to install RC8 into my C750.
On Linux PC(or your Z)
1: Extract tools.tar
tar xvf tools.tar
2: Copy the C760 kernel on the C750 kernel.
cp ./tools/kernel-c760/zImage.bin ./tools/kernel-c750/zImage.bin
3: Remake tools.tar
mv tools.tar tools.tar.orig
tar cvf tools.tar ./tools/
4: You will use this tools.tar to install RC8.
On Your C750
5: Boot Installer
6: Fix Sharp loader NAND 64MB limit
Select "3 NAND Flash Utils" -> "3 Fix Sharp loader NAND 64MB limit (SL-C760/C860 only)"
7: Reboot Installer
8: Change root partition size
Select "3 NAND Flash Utils" -> "1 Resize root partition"
Input "57"
9: Reboot Installer
10: Install RC8
Select "1 Install new ROM"
-
Yeah ! Hine, you rock !!!!
Only 78% used space after a flash !
The only strange things that happened was the z not automatically rebooting during installation, but i guess it's not important.
-
Sash is looking into a solution right now.
-
pleaaaaaaaase, let me try it on my C3k
I didn't have time to try it on my C860 before I sold it
pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease !

Is there a way to upgrade the ROM without having to re-install from scratch? I don't want to have to back-up the data and re-install all the programs I have again.
Thanks.

I'm sure you do this too --
but I tend to install larger programs like gimp, firefox, gcc, etc...
to sd, that way, when I reflash, those are still there.
Of course, this doesn't matter when so many apps get a
version update -- you need to upgrade them anyway.

I decided to flash RC8 over RC5 on my 860. I started to follow the instructions from Philo but seem to have missed out setting the partition size . Anyway install seemed to work OK and the Z works OK. Should I start again and make sure that I set the partition as in the instructions or will it be OK as it is?? What is the likely impact of leaving the partition as it is?
Any comments appreciated

I don't think you need to repartition. (I didn't do it)
Just take care when you install an application where you install it, if the destination is /,
then its on the root partition if it is /mnt/user it will install on the user partition.
You can check the size left by issuing 'df' on a terminal.
If the root partition is full then you will most likely have some problems.
Some (a lot of) people prefer to have only one big root partition, because then you don't have to take care of this. A drawback of repartitioning might be that it might be more difficult to flash another rom image (OZ) afterward.
BTW I don't think there are any modification to this regard between RC5 and RC8 or any release. And if you had repartition the flash before I don't think you need to do it again.
