Title: Good Linux forums for newies
Post by: tawalker on January 05, 2004, 05:01:50 am
In the last few days, I finally got around to installing Red Hat Linux 9 on my main PC at home. Whilst I have a basic competency in Linux, thanks mainly to my Z, I have quite a lot of questions which probably wouldn\'t apply to this forum (at this time, mostly concerning updating applications which were installed with RH9).

Could anyone please suggest some useful Linux Web forums, which are likely to be better for relatively new users?

Many thanks,
Tim

First of all I would suggest that you look out for a local LUG (Linux User Group) - or, if you don\'t have one in your area, see if there is some sort of Unix User Group. They are very often welcoming Linux users also.
If you have already done that with no success, you could try advertising locally (high schools and universities would be a good place to start) for other Linux users and try establishing a LUG yourself.
If you change your profile in this forum so we can see which part of the world you\'re from, you would increase your chances of getting in touch with fellow local Linux users.

Here are some links to websites that may be of help to you:
http://tldp.org/ (http://tldp.org/)
http://people.debian.org/~psg/ddg/ (http://people.debian.org/~psg/ddg/) (in case you are considering using Debian)
http://www.linux.com/ (http://www.linux.com/) (Good articles from time to time)

Best regards.

I am a regular at http://www.mandrakeusers.org (http://www.mandrakeusers.org)

It\'s mainly a Mandrake Linux forum, (which is arguably the best istro for home users to learn on) but there is also an \"Other distributions seciton there and people are always helpfull.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I ended up finding a local Linux user group, and have subscribed to their mailing list, but haven\'t got around to introducing myself yet

I\'ll keep these URLs for future reference, as I\'m sure to need them before too long.

Thanks again,
Tim.
