Title: Znarau
Post by: tsuribaka on December 29, 2004, 11:35:15 pm
I thought I'd gauge the interest for the kind of app I'm working on. It's a word/kanji dictionary with quiz functions.

Basically, what I wanted to create was a "better wordtank", that is, a wordtank-like program but with the ability to create lists, quizzes, handwriting recognition etc.

How the program works can most easily be shown with a few screenshots which I put up at

http://www.kalhufvudet.nu/~johnny/j/web/index.html (http://www.kalhufvudet.nu/~johnny/j/web/index.html)

The page is incoherent, look at the clock in the screenshots and you'll understand why.

What I want with this post is to see if there's anyone else interested in using a program like this (which means I hurry up a little bit getting a releasable version finished) or not (which means that I continue to develop the program but without any input from other users which would be less fun)

I want it    If there is anything I could help with I'd love to help. I'm a designer and can help with graphics etc... I also have a Zaurus but the SL-C3000.

Will your program's dictionary component be able to read simple text files? I really want a dictionary that can.

Also, if you could tell me how to make stuff like this, we could work together and make even better software for the Zaurus. I like all this open source code stuff and all the people developing stuff for the Zaurus.

If you put an ipk on this page it would be nice. I'd like to play with your software.

An ipkg is not yet available. One will be available sooner or later; if you're a designer and want to help, an icon for this package would be a welcome contribution!

Ok. I just have to find out what the specs are on nice icons 32bit etc...

Also another

One is 32x32 pixels at 144 DPI
The other is 32x32 pixels at 72 DPI

Do these work?
If they do I can start making lots of different ones.

This is also the first time I've actually been able to attach a pic. Every other time the page wouldn't reload properly.

Those are good! thanks, I'll use them.

Don't forget to tell me which one worked best. I'm not sure of the correct icon size/dpi yet. If I can find where the icons are on my Zaurus then I can make the right sized ones.

If you can edit and package software, can you please tell me how to do it? I would love to edit a few programs and add focus short-cuts to lots of the programs I'm using.

I'm also still after a dictionary that can read text files (human readable). Another thread would probably be good.

Can't wait to play with your software.

Have a look in /home/QtPalmtop/pics/ on your Zaurus, you can use those png's as templates for size.

To make changes to programs, you have to have
* The source code for the program
* A cross-compilation toolchain on your PC OR a compiler on your Zaurus
* Good knowledge of the programming language the program is written in (most likely C, C++ or Java)

...all of which is of course beyond the scope of this thread, search the forum for more info. If you're not familiar with programming it's going to be a lot of work, don't let that put you off though.

Sounds like a pain. I have the source code and can edit it but have no idea how to package it on Windows XP. I wish someone could make a GUI for making IPKs.

Back to the Znarau software. When do you think a test version will be ready? In day? Weeks? Or months?

I'll try to get an early version out as soon as possible (a few weeks).

The icon looks nice, could you see if you can make one the size of the other Zaurus icons? The larger icons could be used for the PC version (as the program can also be compiled to run under  *nix/KDE)

The larger icon is 64x64 like the Opera icon but I don't know what DPI to save it at.

If I edit source code would you be able to compile it for me? I was just thinking that the only thing I can't do is package software. I can fix a lot of programs and icons then if someone could package it it would be great.

I can't wait tell your software is finished. I will try to test my icons by replacing the opera.png one tonight.

Does *nix/KDE make an EXE file?

I think it's about time to give up on this project and move on. There are plenty of other ways to study the language.

Hey, winners don't quit, and drugs are bad.  I've released a preview now, a real beta will follow.

I know this was a year ago.  But it would be nice to have a version of kanjinirvana made for the 640x480 screen zaurii.  The fonts are way too small on the current one.
