Title: Japanese Kernel For Cacko Rom 1.22
Post by: maslovsky on December 31, 2004, 09:16:47 am
Japanese Kernel is a special version of kernel image for Cacko ROM 1.22. The main difference is that it doesn't have the two Japanese keys mapped to Ctrl and Alt, allowing for Japanese input methods to work properly. Full release notes are available below.

Download Japanese kernel here: slc7x0-Qtopia-1.22-j-1349311204.zip (http://www.elsix.org/downloads/cacko-rom-1.22/slc7x0-Qtopia-1.22-j-1349311204.zip)

Happy New Year!

Update: kahm provided an excellent Japanese HOWTO for Cacko ROM 1.22:

 - Control and Alt keys are not mapped to the hardware buttons, which allows to change Japanese input methods
 - Japanese NLS support in built into the kernel
 - Japanese boot meessage

Thsis kernel can be flashed during update process of Cacko ROM instead of English kernel,
simply use tools.tar from this kernel package and inird.bin of Cacko ROM.

Also it can be flashed on top of existing Cacko 1.22 ROM.

Hi. The new rom looks great, but I'm having a little bit of trouble.

1. When I try and install the ipk for Japanese support it isn't working. Error message is "No application is defined for this document. Type is application/ipkg."

2. I'm stuck in the "Files" menu. (ie files tab only). I can't see the tabs for applications, network, PIM, etc. The "home" button doesn't bring the other tabs back.

3. Could someone link the location of the files to restore Japanese support? I think I've got the right files but I got them a while ago and want to make sure. Also this would be useful for everyone else.

Cheers

Go to the Cacko feed (http://www.cacko.biz/cacko/feed/). There you will find the Japanese support ipk.

You then need to install it.

After that on the Control panel tab, you will see an icon for Languages. Open it and then select Japanese. This will restart Qtopia and then Japanese support will work no prob.

Please, reflash your Zaurus again with English ROM(inird.bin and updater.sh) and Japanese kernel (zImage), then install Japanese packages from Cacko feed (preconfigured in Package Manager) like rehorrericha suggested.

The translation program is called "translator" and unfortunately isn't included in the Cacko japanese-support files. It's found in /usr/QtPalmtop.rom/bin on the Sharp rom.

You may also want to get the applets as well (/usr/QtPalmtop.rom/plugins/applets/libtranslator.so.*)

You may also need to create a sljisho.conf file to get the dictionary to work properly

Is this all that's needed for the translator progrem to work?  If there is anything else, please, let us know and we'll update Japanese support package in Cacko feed.

Uploaded as translator_new.tar.bz2 (please ignore the first translator.tar.bz2 as it didn't include the necessary libs)

I haven't included the dictionary/tranlsation files needed for the app to work as they are available on the C860 CD (and they are 47MB)

The dictionary does need an updated sljisho.conf in order to work (The one included in 1.22 doesn't seem to have any dictionary files registered)

The one from my sharp rom seems to work okay, so I've (hopefully) attached it to this message for possible inclusion in an updated dictionary ipk.

On a related note, is there any way to get Japanese font support for the translator and dictionary programs without having to swap to the complete Japanese environment? I suspect swapping in a different font would work, but which font do those programs use?

EDIT:
Apparently the forum move made my file go bye-bye. I'm reuploading for those interested.

The unifont package should work for this purpose.

Something else that might be useful for those people using the Japanese support in Cacko is the Japanese version of the addressbook (so you can order by kana) and the Japanese postcode data ipk.

I can upload the ipk that came with my C760 CD if you want, but the one from the C860 or C3000 might be slightly more up to date.

Good idea!  I will create packages of original Japanese versions of addressbook and email app - they both use kana ordering (email does that when performing a lookup).

Moving some observations/question to the Japanese thread as per maslovsky's suggestion ...

Having switched Language to Japanese, jisho, Hancomsheet and others work fine with Japanese input but Hancom Word refuses to accept kana via the keyboard, it only works using the inputmethods. Not a major problem for me but might bother some people.

It was mentioned that you can use Japanese input without changing language by installing the unicode font. Can anyone report that this works ?

Some strangeness when changing the date/time. Using the up/down arrow buttons on the LCD to change the hour/minute or pressing on OK will sometimes bring up one of the Japanese input methods (JpnSymPad).

Cheers

I'd noticed the Hancom Word problem but hadn't thought much of it. I use Zeditor for editing anything in Japanese anyway.

I'd also noticed the issue with the Time/Date dialog.  I haven't found anyplace else that does it, so I'm not too worried about it.

Just installing Unifont with *not* allow you to use Japanese input without changing the language locale. I'm in the process of writing a Japanese support howto for Cacko which will detail all the options.  I'm personally using Zstyle to change the default font which seems to work pretty well, but it doesn't install cleanly on Cacko. I'm going to look at repackaging it but I haven't got around to it yet.

I'm having problems with the current ipk for japanese-dict (1.02).
It won't install either through qinstall or ipkg at the command prompt.

Using qinstall I get the dreaded "ipkg said something went wrong sorry". With ipkg it gets to configuring japanese-dict ..... then a bunch of "bad header" errors show up. ipkg dies but it thinks japanese-dict is installed but only half of the files are there.

That is a huge package (17MB compressed).  You will need approximately 51MB of free space to perform the install (17MB package + 34MB uncompressed).  Do you have sufficient space in your /home/tmp filesystem?  What I usually do is symlink my /home/tmp to an SD card.  You could also change the path of tmpinst in your /etc/ipkg.conf:

dest tmpinst /home/tmp/ipkg/inst

This helps with large package installs.  I've uploaded the package again just in case the one on the server was corrupt, but ipkg should be able to detect if it was.

I thought size was the problem first off, so I removed the original japanese-dict  and a bunch of other stuff till I had 60+Mb free, I also tried installing to CF and SC (both with over a 100mb free) using ipkg so that it installs to tmp on the SD/CF. The data.tar.gz file would throw errors even using just tar (both on the Z and my desktop)

I'll give the newly uploaded one a try and report back.

thanks

I have a 750 so i dont have enough room on the internal for the japanese dictionary files so i cant seem to get any of the japanese to work, I am willing to try the symlink or changing the temp install on my sd card formatted to ext2 but i dont know how to without someone holding my hand, I am hoping to be able to get the translator to work too possibly on a 700 also.
so I am fluttering my eyes now hoping for some help, do i use a text editor or konsole or........... just sit here looking dumb

being my first post I would like to add thanks for all the great work with this rom, been using cacko for about a year and waching it bloom into a great work of art,I wish the big companys cared as much but I would also like to add the olny thing i can think of to improve the rom would be if you could make money come out of the cf drive!

Post by: Surreal on February 01, 2005, 08:53:26 pm
Both of the options that you would use here are the same as on a Linux desktop.

For the symlink (symbolic link) use konsole, and the command to create the symbolic link to a tmp directory on your sd card:

ln -s /mnt/card/tmp /home/tmp

The first path is the source directory that you want to link to, and the second path is the name of the destination directory that will point to the source.  Make sure that you have the source directory on your sd card.

In order to change your /etc/ipkg.conf, use a text editor and change the path to one that's on your sd card.

New version works fine, don't know if I just got a corrupted version or what, but it worked fine after I redownloaded it.

Had to install it manually to the sd card as it wouldn't work via iqinstall either from cacko feed or locally. Ended up installing it to main and moving it /mnt/card/QtPalmtop/dic manually and creating a symlink to /home/QtPalmtop/dic

qinstall would fail to install at the very end - I would get the "this package depends on others, plaease intall them" message, then the dreaded "ipkg says something went wrong, sorry" message and it would then delete all the files it had just installed - damm annoying

When you say you got the symlink to work do you mean that japanese-dict ipk was successfully installed?

If so then you probably need to edit /home/zaurus/Settings/sljisho.conf or make another symlink from where the files are installed to /home/QtPalmtop/dic

What I did was to create the directort /home/QtPalmtop/dic and cd to it. Then I ran the following command to create symlinks between the dictionary files on the SD card and the /home/QtPalmtop/dic

Code: [Select]
ln -s /mnt/card/QtPalmtop/dic/* ./
If this is done as root while you are in the /home/QtPalmtop/dic directory you will get symlinks to all the dictionary files in /mnt/card/QtPalmtop/dic/ and not have to edit the sljisho.conf file.

If you haven't (or can't) installed the japanese-dict ipk, then you can unpack the ipk manually to your SD/CF card. The ipk is just a gzipped tarball, so the following command will unpack the ipk and give you 3 files (data.tar.gz, controlo.tar.gz and debian-bianry)
Code: [Select]
tar xzf japanese-dict-x.xx.ipk - of course make sure you put the real name of the ipk.

You can then do the same thing for the data.tar.gz file to unpack all dictionary files and then move them where you want

I also had problems using the Package Installer to install the translator data files to my SD card. Didn't do any real investigations as to why, but possibly because the pathnames within data.tar start with "./opt" ?

Anyway, for the translator, you need to download the following files :

translator_1.0.0-1_arm.ipk
translator_ej-data-data_1.0.0-1_arm.ipk
translator_je-data-data_1.0.0-1_arm.ipk

I guess you'll be quite happy to install the translator program to Flash, in which case it will install fine using the Package Installer. Unless the data files have been fixed, you'll need to download them to the SD using wget before installing them.

Use the procedure mentioned by Stubear above to unpack the files. You should end up with 3 directories (I think) , eljisho and ejtable (for English->Japanese) and je (Ja->En). Move these directories to /mnt/card/QtPalmtop/translator. Then give the translator a try ...

Having said that, I've found that whilst the English to Japanese translation is working fine, when I try a Japanese to English conversion, the program just bombs. So maybe these instructions are incomplete.

I'm reliably informed that the English to Japanese translations aren't too hot anyway, so I may go look for a better translation program.

Should be

translator_1.0.0-1_arm.ipk
translator-ej-data_1.0.0-1_arm.ipk
translator-je-data_1.0.0-1_arm.ipk

available from the cacko feed at http://cacko.biz/cacko/feed (http://cacko.biz/cacko/feed).

Suggest you try installing them through the Package Installer before resorting to wget, though.

The Zstyle package involves scripting specific to various Z versions. The latest hardware it supports is the 860, as I have yet to try it on the later versions, never mind update it. It's fairly simple to try, but I don't know how well it'll deal with the new kernel. (Remember - this package originated on the 5x00 series.)

Once Cacko is running on both devices we'll be rebuilding a bilingual version, hopefully with ZStyle running properly.

Ok, spent the entire evening yesterday reinstalling Cacko with the new patch plus all the rest of my software and user settings (urgh..).

Had a bit of a scare when I couldn't get the C-Guys SDIO drivers to work on Cacko, but it turned out my Windows PC had corrupted the sdiomgr script.

So now everything's working flawlessly, plus I gained 30 MB of free internal storage

Thanks again Maslovsky.

(Now I need to find some time to update my conversion guide)
