Does anyone have any wireless sniffers working under cacko 1.22? I can't seem to get either kismet or wellenreiter to work with my ambicom card. I don't get any errors and wellenreiter appears to work but it isn't seeing any data when it should be seeing a ton of traffic. I've setup a dummy wireless profile with a static ip and ad-hoc mode.
How do I make this work?
Thanks for all the hard work.
Jon
-
Like this:
1. install the kismet and kismet-qt packages
2. Create dummy Network configuration
3. Activate dummy config
4. Launch kismet-qt
5. From the 'Scheme' drop down select 'Sharp 3x-prism2'
6. Click 'Save' Click 'Restart'
Watch the networks appear.
-
I'm having problems with step 2. When I try to create a dummy configuration, I bomb trying to spoof an IP address. Each time the network app tells me I'm using an invalid IP, since no matter what I enter it thinks it's the broadcast address. Please walk through all the steps: What ESS-IP do you fill in? Infrastructure / Ad-hoc? If Ad-hoc, what channel? IP Address? Subnet Mask? Gateway?
My goal is to get SLapAss and Wellenreiter working, so if you throw in your config files for either of those, I'd be thrilled.
Thanks.
Rick
-
Here is what I do to create a dummy network config:
1. Launch the Network app
2. Click add
3. Set the Name field to 'Sniffer'
4. Go to the Config Tab, uncheck 'Non-Spec ESS-ID: "ANY"'
5. Set the ESS-ID field to 'any'
6. Set Network Type to '802.11 Ad-Hoc'
7. Go to the TCP/IP tab, uncheck 'Obtain TCP/IP information Automatically'
8. Set the IP Address field to '10.0.0.1'
9. Set the subnet mask field to '255.255.255.0'
10. Click on OK.
You should now have a dummy config.
Doing some additional testing I noticed that I do not need to use this dummy network config with my WCF12. I can skip the whole dummy network config step and move straight to running kismet.
-
Here is what I do to create a dummy network config:
You do nothing?
While on the subject of wireless, we really need a wireless-discovery howto badly.
-
When I do this, kismet gives me a 'cannot connect to server' error when I click restart and then the card appears to suspend. I just noticed if I click restart a second time then all is well. Weird... sorry for the odd post.
Thanks, Jon

What card are you using?

Hi,
since cacko 1.22 provides different drivers for the wireless lan (hostap instead of wlan-ng) I don't think you could just use the same "how-to's" for kismet. Even with the "old" drivers there were different ways to set up kismet.
I had kismet 2004-04-R1 installed on my Z when I was using Cacko 1.21b and I didn't set up any "dummy connections". I just used the scripts from kismetQt for init and it worked fine.
Now I installed kismet 2004-10-R1 on my Z with Cacko 1.22. I set the source to
source=hostap,eth0,prismsource
It was not successful and I didn't have time for further investigations yet.
The kismet server says:
---
Source0 (prismsource): Enabling monitor mode for hostap source interface eth0 channel 6...
FATAL: Failed to set channel 6 22:Invalid argument
---
There is also a warning message whwn I use iwconfig:
---
Warning: Driver for device eth0 recommend version 18 of Wireless Extension, but has been compiled with version 15, therefore some driver features may not be available...
---
Hopefully this weekend I will have time to check what the problem is.
Kind regards
Jan
PS: I almost forgot to mention that the wireless connection works fine apart from the problem with kismet.

I deciided to try the new Cacko ROM, as I miss Wellenreiter while using pdaXrom. I've got it working fine using Anton's feed, however it doesn't seem to like running in rotated mode. It crashes if rotated from a landscape start. And won't start if the screen is in portrait mode.
Anyone else see this or is it just me?
Additionally, there are a few png missing for the tool bar at the top right od the screen for starting, stopping the scans and configuring. I've zipped the missing icons to use simply unzip to /home/QtPalmtop/pics It'll create a directory /actions with the missing icons.
Cheers,
Jerry
-
FYI: libpcap is already in the 1.22 ROM
Wellenreiter package in Cacko feed will be updated soon to include missing icons and without a need to do anything from console.
-
The Wellenreiter package on the feed should be fixed so you can just install and use it. You need to have at least one Wireless configuration for it to work other than that it will just work. You can then tweak the /opt/QtPalmtop/bin/wellenreiter script to work the way you want for your system.
Oh, and installing the 0.7.2 versions of libpcap is an exercise in wheel spinning. We have libpcap 0.8.3 on the feed and I promise it works.
Enjoy...

yes, libpcap0.8.3 works.

Like I mentioned it's even in the ROM itself. I had to include libpcap in the base ROM because some applications we have built-in depend on it, for example wpa_supplicant and tcpdump.
-
apparently libpcap isn't in the ROM though.
SO to get Wellenreiter to run, you need:
Libopie 1 and 2.
Libpcap
and Wellenreiter itself.
edit: checked, and it works fine this way. Some complaints in the Wellenreiter logging, but that should be directed at its author anyway. THe wellenreiter fonts are *really* small though. Both prortrait and landscape seem to work fine
Tell me if I'm wrong. All the packages are on the cacko feed, so you won't have to hunt them down (nice job )

libbcap 0.8.3 IS in the ROM, trust me However some programs may be linked specificaly to version 0.7, so you may need to create a link:
/usr/lib/libpcap.so.0.7 -> /usr/lib/libpcap.so.0.8.3
-

so libcap and libpcap are the same thing? joy, didn't know that
I do look like an idiot now eh?
I'll check the link and edit.
What's weird is that wellenreiter complained about the missing libpcap on a default install, and I fixed that by installing .8
I vill furzer test, jah!

Watch the networks appear.
Thank you very much, I followed your advice and got kismet working on the first try! Very nice
But oddly enough, I can't seem to connect to a network in the "normal" way. Meaning I can't connect to the WiFi service at the book store and surf from there (I should be able to get to their subscription page and sign in, but I can't connect).
And for some reason, my CF WiFi card shows up as a "Zcomax XI-325H 200mw" instead of what it really is, a "EZ Connect SMC2642W"
In /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf the config lines for the two cards are nearly the same (with the "manfid 0xd601, 0x0005" line being commented out on the SMC entry.
I tried deleting all of the other config entries except the SMC one but then the card wasn't recognized at all. Now I'm commenting out the "manfid..." line from the zcomax entry to see what happens there.
Nuts, it didn't help. Couldn't recognize the card.
Any thoughts on this?
John

This whole libpcap confusion is really my fault folks. I was not paying attention during some of final ROM builds when libpcap was added to the base ROM image. There is only a link to libpcap missing:
/usr/lib/libpcap.so.0.7 -> /usr/lib/libpcap.so.0.8.3
Some apps compiled against an older libpcap look for this older version of the library. Since in my testing libpcap 0.8.3 is compatible with libpcap 0.7 just the link is needed. This will be fixed in the first hotfix and the libpcap package will be removed from the feed as it is unnecessary. So, if you must...curse my name.

You are obviously incompetent.
Thanks for figuring it out.

I just installed the updated wellenreiter from the feed and it works great from the command line (don't even need kismet running first anymore or run it with sudo), but it refuses to run by tapping on the icon. Ok, maybe I shouldn't say refuse; the light on my network card turns on and if you do a ps -A it shows it as running, but it never comes up.

Remember that you need to restart pcmcia subsystem after editing configuration files:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart
Or reboot your Z.
Also check that version field exactly matches the string you get with cardctl ident for your card.

Yes sir, I rebooted it each time (I backed up the original and tried a few intutitive variations that I mentioned with no luck).
Here's what cardctl ident spits out:
#cardctl ident
Socket 0
product info" " ", "SMC2642W 11 Mbps Wireless CF Card", ""
manfid: 0xd601, 0x0005
function: 6 (network)
Socket 1:
no product info available
Here's the SMC entry in hostap:
card "SMC EZ Connect SMC2642W 802.11b card"
version " ", "SMC2642W 11mMbps Wireless CF Card", ""
# manfid 0xd601, 0x0005
bind "hostap_cs"
Here's the Zcomax entry:
card "Zcomax XI-325H 200mW"
# version " ", "IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN/PC Card"
manfid 0xd601, 0x0005
bind "hostap_cs"
Cardctl thinks it's a SMC2642W (which is correct) but the applet in the tray thinks it's a Zcomax XI-325H 200mW card.
The card works great for Kismet, but doesn't work at all for browsing or for Wellenreiter (the connection times out and gets aborted).
Btw, thanks for the great ROM and thanks for your help
John
-
Ok, try to comment manfid 0xd601, 0x0005 for Zomax and uncomment for your card (commenting version field at the same time)
-
Or delete Zomax entry completely...
-
Okay, I now get the correct device listed. Thanks!
Wellenreiter seems to be working (I'm not near a working wireless connection so I can't be sure).
Not sure about Opera, should the settings for the network be the same as for kismet?
Thanks again
John

Stupkid:
Nice work on the updated Wellenreiter (FYI, I updated without downloading the entire feed )
I'm experiencing the GUI crashing if resolution changes. Anyone else having this problem? It'll work fine in either landscape or portrait as long as it is started in that mode.
Tip for those that run Qtopia in root mode, edit out the sudo commands in the start_wellenreiter script & it runs fine.
Cheers,
Jerry

Hi,
Appreciate someone can help me out. I am a totally noob here. I managed to get Wellenreiter working. However, when I launch it, it says "You have started Wellenreiter as non-root. You will have only limited functionality. Proceed anyway?" If I click Yes, I am still able to detect the WiFi networks but certain functions are grey out, such as Intrusion etc..
I have already check the Execute with root privilege box.
Any idea? Help...

Sounds like you may not have the most current wellenreiter installed. If you installed opie-wellenreiter, remove it and install wellenreiter from the cacko feed. This version includes a wrapper that will run wellenreiter using sudo which will remove the error message you're getting. No need to write your own script or enter cardctl commands in the konsole before running Wellenreiter. Checking the "Run as Root" doesn't work for Wellenreiter.
Cheers,
Jerry

You give me too much credit Maslovsky did most of the work on wellenreiter I just packaged it up. I noticed the problem with crashing when switching screen orientation. Not sure what that is about.

Then thanks to you both
I wonder if the GUI resolution change problem is related to all of the QPixmap errors that it throws when loading. Appears there are four images it can't find when loading.
Thanks again,

I noticed the problem with crashing when switching screen orientation. Not sure what that is about.
I figured it out turns out the problem is that the binary "wellenreiter" doesn't have an icon associated with it, the wrapper script does but that's not enough. If you create an icon for the wellenreiter binary in the Tab applet when you run the wrapper and the icon shows up in the task bar and rotation works without problem.
So you may want to update the ipk to also create a icon for the binary too.
Cheers,
Jerry

Hmph. The best laid plans of mice and men I suppose.
I was hoping to not have two icons or to allow the user to start the app via the Qtopia icon. I will update the wellenrieter when I get a chance or see if there is some other way to fake out QPE.
Thanks jerrybme!

Does this happen with the most recent version of wellenreiter package I've sent to you (with binary in /usr/local/bin)? This version should display icon in taskbar properly.

The current package on the feed has been fixed. Qtopia needs to have a .desktop file, which lists the executable's name to not loose the icon. Kind of cheesy, but it works.

I've installed kismet-qt from the cacko feed using ipkg, but kismet package hasn't been installed. Is the package needed to run kismet-qt? I have to install it? If this is correct, it should be a dependence package of kismet-qt, correct?
Is it necessary to modify the launch icon to execute it with root? or that was only necessary in previous versions?
Thanks.

Hi stupkid,
I installed kismet-qt directly from the feed with the commandline. With gaim there was no problem, but kismet-qt didn't install kismet. Now I've installed kismet and all libraries with no problem.
-
I have some problems with both Kismet and Wellenreiter on my Zs, (SL860 Cacko 122 lite and 5500 with TKC).
With Cacko and my 860 the Kismet packages work fine if I install locally. If I install from the net I end up with the gui icon and an icon for the command line and i just get the 'cannot connect to server' message.
With Wellenreiter on the 860, installed over the net, it claims to be scanning but produces no results.
A working Kismet gives me results. On one occasion, in a shopping mall hotspot, Kismet reported 15 APs! Wellenreiter gave no result whatsoever.
The same lack of success+ with Wellenreiter occurs on my 5500 and the same success with Kismet!
Yes I've read the tutorial and will again, but there must be a short answer somewhere!
-
If you are having problems with Kismet or Wellenreiter please state what driver you are using and what driver you configured Kismet or Wellenreiter to use.
Thanks!

thanks for the prompt reply stupkid,
On my 5500 I use earlier versions of Kismet and the Kismet-gui and it uses the standard Prism drivers that come with the tkcrom.
I've just started to play with Hentges 3.5.2 rom on my spare 5500. This 'pre-installs' Wellenreiter and I've just run it next to my 860 and it detected it! The configuration claims hostap and I just let it do its own thing.
With Kismet running on my 860 it detects the 5500 when it is probing... no joy with Wellenreiter tho. I'll play a bit more!
When I use the local install on your packages for Kismet I have no problems on my 860. I'm assuming that Cacko defaults to hostap and that the prism drivers that I choose in the Kismet gui are the right ones. At least it works.
With Wellenreiter I ask it to 'autodetect' and it says it is using the hostap drivers and that the wifi0 device is the correct one.
It doesn't seem to matter whether I plug in my Zonet or my Pretec device.
(As an aside on that, the Zonet cards seem to get and hold wireless connections much more reliably than the Pretec.)
With Wellenreiter I get the same results as reported in another thread, it claims to be scanning but no results show up.
Cheers
(by the way compliments and thanks to you and Anton for the feed and super Rom!)
-
I know it is annoying, but I still need to ask this question because I am very new to Z and Linux:
How to edit the /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf ? I need to get my Symbol wifi working.
Please advise.

An update: now using Hentges 353 on my 5500... Wellenreiter works well!
But while looking at the configuration of the sniffer on the 5500 I got a hint for Wellenreiter on the Cacko rom with my 860. I altered the configuration to use eth0 instead of wifi0 and it just started working .....

Okay, I am trying to install kismet-qt.
I've installed kisment and I'm onthe Cacko 1.21b rom for the C3000.

After that I tried following instructions exactly but could not get kismet to work.
I isolated the problem to this:
