It seems like the latest version of this application is at the following location:
http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net/download.html (http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net/download.html)
However, the arm ipk's there seem to be for familiar and not zaurus rom.
Does anyone know whether version 1.0.8 has been packaged for Sharp roms?
If not, can someone please compile this (ideally this would be a nice addition to Cacko feed but any location with working ipk would be great).
Thanks for any help in finding this.
-
will be interested too :-)
-
so did anyone find ipk's that work?
-
zroadmap_1.0.1-1_arm.ipk seems to work, but it doesn't recognise the maps ... the maps available on the web site seems to work only with 1.0.8 and above... So where are the "old" map?
I found a zroadmap_1.0.8-r1_arm.ipk on the net, but it is not for the sharp rom... ipkg don't wnat to install it. ??
I don't know if zroadmap is what i need, but it seems to. i 'm trying to have a basic MapInfo equivalent. Any other soft could do that on the Z?

The .ipk you have is good.
I'm using the next newer version (available here: https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=336) The old maps used to be available on the http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net (http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net) site, but they seem to have been removed.
I have the older usdir.rdm.tgz file, and the maps for Michigan and Virginia.
PM me if you want those and we can figure a way to get them to you.

is it possible to have Europe maps on zroadmap ? i'm leaving in ITALY !!!!
-
I emailed the authors, and offered some "donations" hopefully they can get it compiled for the 5500/1000/3000/3100 z's

Is zroadmap the best map/gps program for the Zaurus. I am interested in getting a CF GPS card but if there is not some really good programs to mate it to i might just wait. i have heard of qpegps or something like that. Anyone have any experience with other programs and their maps?
-
nope mail got returned to sender, alas there is no hope, this sux....bummer
-
Don't give up yet -- The author (Pascal Martin) indicated (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=14758&st=0&p=107229&#) a desire to see the program running on the Zaurus. He's hasn't responded to email recently, but I don't think that necessarily means he's given up on us.
Also, even if we assume that he has, that doesn't mean there's no hope -- it's an open source project. Just grab the source (http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=74158) and compile it for yourself. That's what open source is all about. If there's something you don't like, don't complain... Fix it! I was planning to put together a development environment and do that myself before I saw his post -- I don't see any reason not to continue.
Of course, the fact that I have a 3 week old baby makes time something of an issue, so don't hold your breath waiting for an .ipk from me either

There's some European Roadmap maps here (http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net/maps/dcwENAS.tar.gz), but I don't know whether those maps work with zRoadmap, as it's older than the current version of Roadmap. Also, note the caution on the website: Caution: the maps for the non-US portion have been built from the Digital Charts of the World (DCW). The official horizontal accuracy of the DCW is 2040 meters: the resulting maps are therefore unusable for car navigation in their current state.
We're trying to work with the author to get an updated version of Roadmap compiled for the Zaurus. When that happens, those maps should work, but I don't know whether they'll fit your needs.
There are other GPS programs available that will let you make your own maps. The nice thing about Roadmap is that it uses vector maps, so you can keep maps for a large area in memory. If you use graphical maps, you'll just need to have a larger number of smaller maps made. Look at qpeGPS (http://qpegps.sourceforge.net/) or GpsDrive (http://www.kraftvoll.at/software/) for that.

I tried to compile roadmap on cross development environment and falied, also tried on my sl-c3100 and missing a header file... if any knows a way, or the full source with QPE code all there, please let me know

I'm using the old old 1.0 version successfully on my C1000. Have not tried GPS because I don't have one for my C1000. I do use the old Radio Shack Digitraveler with my SL-5500 old us rdm and odl maps - works great.
I also would be interested in more development on Zroadmap. Can you give a donation link so I can help out and encourage the original developer and any others?
Thanks.

I also have the 1.0 version, but the IPK is actually "zroadmap_1.0_2_arm.ipk"
I can get maps to display of towns in Illinois if I input the correct street address for an address that exists in the database. I downloaded the Illinois package.
I've been reading the documation, and there seem to be 2 additional programs in the i686 linux version. These are:
---------------------------------------
buildmap
A program that takes the US Census Bureau files as input and produces the map files used by roadmap. This application is to be run once on a desktop or beefed-up laptop to prepare the map files and is not needed when using roadmap.
and
buildus
A program that takes a set of roadmap map files and produce a directory file that helps roadmap choose the map(s) to display according to the location or city. This application is to be run once on a desktop or laptop and is not needed when using roadmap.
----------------------------------------
It seems like you have to use these 2 programs to get usable maps with the ability to save/access maps directly from Zroadmap. Otherwise zroadmap only seems to be able to display the current map that was loaded during the street search. These are zoomable, and you can scroll to adjacent towns, but if you try to save it under a different name, the next time you open the new filename, you will be presented with the original location, (which was found in the street search).
Jon
EDIT I'm just using it as a map reader with the ability to zoom. I don't have a GPS.

I was just looking at that too. It appears to be a version for OpenZaurus. I don't think it'll work under the Sharp ROMs.

javahack,
The link that dbowden posted is the same place that I got my Illinois map from. Also make sure you download a file called "usdir.rdm.tgz.gz" (It has "usdir.rdm" inside the archive, which is used as an index file for all the State files). It should be at the bottom of the page where the other files are located.
ant,
I tried that version. It doesn't appear in the install dialog when loaded onto a SD card.
I use Cacko 1.23. I think "armv5te" means it is for pdaXrom, or like dbowden mentioned, it's "a version for OpenZaurus"
I downloaded the "i686 linux version" of "roadmap", not "zroadmap" to get the small utilities I mentioned in my last post:
buildmap & buildus
I tried to install the program onto my other computer, which has "damn small linux" on it. DSL linux won't let me install it, so now I'm downloading an ISO of Debian linux. I download overnight while I'm sleeping. I don't have any linux machines, other than my Zaurus. I want to get the above program installed, so I can try those 2 utilities which I mentioned.

Anyone managed to make it work on CX models ?
I've downloaded :

and I'm getting the following error:
bash-2.05# ipkg install zroadmap_1.0.12-r2_armv5te.ipk
zcat: zroadmap_1.0.12-r2_armv5te.ipk: not in gzip format
zcat: stdin: unexpected end of file
ipkg_install_file: ERROR unpacking control.tar.gz from zroadmap_1.0.12-r2_armv5te.ipk
Anything I'm missing ?
-
mbaush,
Are you planning to use it for maps for Quebec? (out of curiosity)
-
I have an old version working on my C1000 - it's zroadmap_1.0_2_arm.ipk. I'm attaching it to this message in case you would like to try it. It works with the older maps - don't know if it works with the new ones.
I'm also attaching the old usdir file which is needed to get zroadmap to work with any US maps. I had to name it usdir.rdm.zip in order to upload it to the forum so be SURE to rename it to usdir.rdm before you put it on your Zaurus.
Anyone managed to make it work on CX models ?

so this works with cacko and the new maps?
-
When I first installed Cacko on my C1000, I tried various versions of the zroadmap ipk and when I hit on one that worked, I stopped soooo, other ipks may work, but the only one I am SURE works cuz it's working on my C1000 is the one I uploaded above. I also am using the OLD maps because I happened to have them; didn't even KNOW there were NEW maps so I have NOT tried ANY new maps with my setup.
All I do is look up addresses with the zroadmap install I have on the C1000. On my SL-5500, I have qpeGPS installed and use a Digitraveler from Radio Shack (they no longer sell them) with a custom cable which I bought on Ebay from someone and so can use the GPS features on THAT Zaurus.
Zroadmap has an arrow on the screen which tracks your travel when you use it in a car and the names of the roads and intersections pop up on the screen as you pass them....very neat. The only thing I could never get to work with it is the voice. Flite always reads just the first intersection and then never "speaks" again.
so this works with cacko and the new maps?

Sorry, but I'm confused. The arrow on the screen tracking your travel is on the screen of SL-5500, not C1000? And the reason is ..., you can't get GPS to work with C1000? or i'm totally off the track
-
Well, I'll try to explain:
The Digitraveler can only connect through the serial port (or whatever that connection at the base of the SL-5500 is called) on my 5500. Since the C1000 does not have that type of connection; ergo, I cannot connect the Digitraveler GPS device to the C1000.
I don't have a CF card GPS or USB GPS device to TRY on the C1000. So, all I can do on the C1000 is look at static maps after I enter in an address. I cannot use the GPS tracking with it since I don't have a device which connects to it.
BTW, you need to set the icon for Zroadmap to "use root privilege" for it to work AND you must type in a viable address in the utility to have the maps show up. Also, your maps must be placed in one of the folders listed in the options of Zroadmap.
Do you have Zroadmap working on your device?

Hello, I have installed the ipk, but where do i drop the usdir.rdm file ?
I'm getting a few errors when I launch it
"An error occured when opening the selected trip"
and from the console :
## roadmap_option.c line 371: illegal option /home/zaurus/Documents..
## roadmap_locator.c line 1444: cannot open directory database (usdir)
## roadmap_gps.c line 232: cannot access GPS source gpsd://localhost
## roadmap_file.c line 70: cannot open file /home/zaurus/.roadmap/trips/default
Perhaps it is because I am running on cacko beta for SL-C3000...
oh and s3ah0kzz, if I can find any data for quebec, I would be happy! before first step is to get the app working.

you need the usdir.rdm file for it to run...

Actually, the C1000 (as well as the C3x00) _does_ have a Sharp serial port - it's on the side with the USB connector, hidden behind a cover.
Whether it will work for you seems to depend on the hardware/cable that you use. Try searching the forums for more information (i.e. 'C3000' or 'C1000' and 'serial').

Put usdir.rdm in /opt/QtPalmtop/share/roadmap if you have enough room or /mnt/cf/QtPalmtop/share/roadmap or /mnt/card/QtPalmtop/share/roadmap
Put a map in the same folder so you can try it out. Remember to hold down on the Roadmap icon with your stylus and check "use root". Also, go to "find, address" on the menu of roadmap and put in a known good address. Now Roadmap is picky on what it can find as an address. For instance, if I put in Peachtree Str for Atlanta, GA nothing will come up...I guess there are just too many instances of "Peachtree Str" for it to handle. Also, it will only accept certain abbreviations for Av, str (or maybe it's st), hwy, etc. You have to keep trying until you hit upon something that works and that it recognizes. You can also try "find, intersection". Then it will save the address so that in the future, you can go to "find" and choose that address and your map will pop up for that area. I have basic addresses for each city or county that I choose in order to get the map to pop up for that area and then I scroll from that address to find what I want.
Just download any map to use and try it out and look up viable addresses in Google or Yahoo.

I have unzipped, untar and dropped a few .rdm (maps) from the website into /opt/QtPalmtop/share/roadmap, but nothing shows up.
How do I view a map ? Can I only access a location by address?
At least the app is working, and is not displayed that error message anymore
-
search for a valid address...then you will see the map
-
Heh, well, you did the hardest part. You should have a county map in the same folder with usdir.rdm.
You have to go to "find" at the top menu, click on "address" or "intersection" and keep entering addresses for the area map you downloaded until zroadmap "finds" one. It takes a lot of patience and a lot of tries, but eventually you should hit on a street, avenue or intersection which makes the map pop up and shows the address. You can try various streets, avenues, etc. in a city in the county. Also, street, avenue drive have standard abbreviations which you have to use AND use the standard abbreviations for the state. I think avenue is AV; drive is DR, but I'm not sure. Keep trying....if it says "no street of that name", try a different street. Once you get a map, you can scroll to various areas and click the stylus on different streets and avenues and see the spelling the app uses which makes it easier to enter OTHER addresses.

Quickest way to find a street if this is your first time searching, is use very basic, simple street names.
203 main
204 main
608 washington (presidents)
204 elm (trees)
etc, etc. Eventually one will pop up.
What I did for a city close to me was to look up the public library in the phone book. When I typed in that address, the map popped up.

Great, thanks for the help, I got it to work.
Therefore I'm a little disappointed, as it's nowhere as fast or visually complete as my good old Mapopolis on pocket pc was..
Lets just hope it gets better as the time goes on
Say, there's QPose that emulates Palm OS, could I get TomTom or Mapopolis running from the emulation on my Zaurus ?
I can't get my hands on a Palm ROM though.. Anyone got QPose to work?
-
i try to run qpose on my c3100 but it is almost unusable....so i do not think that we can run palm gps software under zaurus.....
-
I zoomed out too much and zroadmap crashed. Now zroadmap GUI crashes (the process existed) upon startup, even after uninstall/reinstall. Do es anybody know where it stores the inital zoom information?
Edit: sorry it's working fine, just takes very long time to load maps for a very large area.

Does anyone actually use this with a gps?
-
I use it with my SL-5500 with the Radio Shack Digitraveler (no longer available) and a special homemade cable which I bought on EBay.
Works great. Tracks along like a champ with a little blue triangle and pops up with the names of upcoming intersections. In each corner it tells your current speed and how far you have to go on your trip and I forget what else.
Can't use it on my C1000 because I don't have a GPS device which will work with it.

There's a post in "Deals and Great Z Buys" subforum. GPS for $35
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=17825 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=17825)
My question is: Do you need a cellular phone + account to use these devices?
I know it's a dumb sounding question, but I thought you needed a method to "talk" to the satellites. Does the above GPS module work by itself when being hooked up to a Zaurus?
Thank you,
Jon
-
Nah, believe it or not, there's something in this world that's FREE. :-) I guess the US government put the satellites up there...I can get about 6 or 7 on a good clear day. Just plug the device into the Zaurus and WAIT ...sometimes the first time will take as long as 10 to 15 minutes to pull in the satellites but mine works almost instantly after you have used it once in a new place.
I'll check out that link to the inexpensive GPS...thanks.

My question is: Do you need a cellular phone + account to use these devices?
I know it's a dumb sounding question, but I thought you needed a method to "talk" to the satellites. Does the above GPS module work by itself when being hooked up to a Zaurus?
Thank you,
Jon

Has anyone used this CF GPS card with a C3100/3000/1000? (With zroadmap)?
http://www.ambicom.com/products/gps/gps-cf.html (http://www.ambicom.com/products/gps/gps-cf.html)
AmbiCom GPS Navigation Receiver CompactFlash Card [Model GPS-CF]
I want to know if this one works, because my local Staples store carries them.
I don't plan to use the included software or voice stuff. I want to be able to use this when I'm on a motorcycle trip. I'll just pull over and take my C3100 out of the saddlebag and use the GPS to "Find" my location.
Description from webpage below:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overview
AmbiCom's GPS Navigation Receiver CompactFlash Card is the Global Positioning System Receiver for your Pocket PC and the perfect accessory to your PDA. In addition to comprehensive driving directions, the GPS Navigation CompactFlash Card is loaded with extra features such as dynamic voice navigation, off-route warning, and detailed street maps in the 50 states. Now you can turn your Pocket PC into a true GPS navigation system and never worry about getting lost!
In addition to PocketMap Navigator, you can also use other forms of navigation software in conjunction with AmbiCom's Navigation Receiver. Aviation, nautical, outdoor camping and hiking software are just some examples of the variety of softwares you can use with AmbiCom's Navigation Receiver. Simply ensure the software is compatible with NMEA-0183 and SiRF Binary protocols and you are free to explore the world with your new GPS navigation system!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nevermind, I should have searched first... I used "Ambicom" as search word, and after sorting thru 28 pages of wifi and bluetooth. I found about 15 threads on GPS. 5 of them were very informational and I bookmarked them.

Zroadmap has an arrow on the screen which tracks your travel when you use it in a car and the names of the roads and intersections pop up on the screen as you pass them....very neat. The only thing I could never get to work with it is the voice. Flite always reads just the first intersection and then never "speaks" again.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=113679\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I have CF gps working (i.e. can see the satellite signals in the zroadmap gps console and qpegps). However, I didn't see an arrow on the zroadmap screen which tracks my travel. Is there a setting/preference I should set?
Edit: Should have printed the following on my forehead: "patience is a virtue!". Since this is the first time the gps unit starts up, it takes ~10-20min to associate with the satellite network. Btw, I love the blue arrow ...
-
Actually, I have not done this in a while and at the age of 62 my memory is not the best BUT, I think you have to "start a trip" first and then get moving and you will see the arrow moving. I can't remember if you need to set a "destination" also, but maybe you do.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, you don't have to. The little blue arrow (your current location) is moving either in "navigation" or "trip" mode. "Set distination" and "start trip" give you an extra red arrow, pointing to the destination, ahead of the blue arrow. The map moves and rotates as I advance. Pretty nice.
However, I only had speech and text ("current on ... street" and "approaching ... street") once. Then nothing showed up again. I understand the flite thingy is tricky, but I though the on screen text in the "trip" mode should work ok. Don't know which setting is wrong. I need to read more about the online zroadmap help.
Another puzzling thing, I used to have voice (flite) responce every time I selected a street, which suggested the flite thing wasn't totally broken. However, from yesterday, it only responses to my first click, as other people experienced. Btw, my package was zroadmap_1.0-3 from cacko feed with the old maps.

Reading the roadmap manual Here:
http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net/manual.html#id.s5.6 (http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net/manual.html#id.s5.6)
I found these keyboard shortcuts:
But a lot of them don't work. I have a C3100 and Cacko 1.23 full
Has anyone gotten all, or most, of these keyboard shortcuts to work in Zroadmap?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.6 KEY BINDINGS
Most of the RoadMap commands are available from the keyboard
(so to answer requests from my loyal Zaurus fans) .
In fact, the button and key bindings are common to all ports,
but some buttons might not exist on some platforms.
Please note that all the button and key bindings are case insensitive,
i.e. the same binding applies to 'A' and 'a'
(as well as to "Button-Left" and "button-left"--whatever it means).
On a desktop or laptop (or on the Zaurus), the keyboard keys are mapped as follow:
Button-Left Move the map view to the left.
Button-Right Move the map view to the right.
Button-Up Move the map view up.
Button-Down Move the map view down.
+ Zoom in: enlarge the central part of the map.
- Zoom out: show a larger area.
A Show a specified address.
B Start the trip back to the departure point.
D Show the destination point.
E Erase maps among those currently visible.
F Toggle the full screen mode.
G Show the GPS position.
H Hold the map view in its current position.
I Show a specified street intersection.
J Rotate the map counterclockwise.
K Rotate the map clockwise.
L Show the last selected location.
M Enable/Disable map download.
N Create a new trip.
O Open an existing trip.
P Stop tracking the current trip.
Q Quit RoadMap.
R Set the map back to the default zoom level.
S Start tracking the current trip.
U Center the map on the GPS position (north up).
W Set the selected street block as waypoint.
X Find an intersection.
Y Save a screenshot of the current map display.

the USCB has released their 2005 TIGER/Line data at http://www2.census.gov/geo/tiger/tiger2005fe/ (http://www2.census.gov/geo/tiger/tiger2005fe/) The maps we're using are 2002 (or maybe 2000) version. I'm wondering if we can package the new data in the old zroadmap format.
also take a look at Roadnav http://roadnav.sourceforge.net/ (http://roadnav.sourceforge.net/) A portantial port candidate for Z.

As far as I know, [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=336]this[/url] is the latest ipk for the Sharp ROMs. If you're running pdaXrom, there are newer packages, which use the newer map version, have nifty icons, and look a little nicer, but basically have the same functionality. You might be able to get the pdaXrom version running under X/Qt, if you install all the proper libraries, but it'll definitely be slower that way.

You can download the one from cacko feed (version 1.0_3), which I'm using. AFAIK, that's the most up-to-date working ipk for sharp rom.

dbowden, xjgian, Thanks a lot.

Is anyone able to compile a newer ipk?
Also, is it normal for the road on the map to be between a quarter of an inch to half an inch away from my actual location? Zroadmap seems to always place me a little to the left of the road I am actually on. Is there an offset setting somewhere? What causes this?
-
Just re-flashed to CackoLite, and it's a bear to get zroadmap working without an SD card with maps and usdir.rdm on the card.
Previous to reflashing, I had copied my maps and usdir.rdm to this directory:
/hdd3/QtPalmtop/share/roadmap
It worked with no cards inserted.
I also edited my prefrences file to point it to /hdd3/QtPalmtop/share/roadmap
This worked fine before I re-flashed.
Now I cannot get roadmap to launch without a card with the same directory on it.
/hdd3 didn't change in the re-flash.
EDIT: A little more reading in the roadmap manual shows the default prefrences file.
Some things don't "Stick" in the actual GUI prefrences dialog.
Map.Path: ~/.roadmap,/var/lib/roadmap,/usr/lib/roadmap
Changed to this:
Map.Path: .,/hdd3/QtPalmtop/share/roadmap
(I used the ., because the "General.Database" path uses the same format).
Now it runs off /hdd3 with NO cards inserted!

I don't play with my Zaurus much anymore, but I needed a newer version of zroadmap. I compiled roadmap-1.0.12 and hacked together a new ipk using zroadmap-1.0-2 one. Please try if it works.
Thanks.

Hey lucho, you still around? I reflashed back to the sharp rom and thought that I might as well try your roadmap package. I installed it, got my gps card up and working, and then attempted to run zroadmap. I get the following errors if I launch it in the console and no roadmap windows appear on screen:
bash-2.05$ roadmap
SlSharedManager: can't get proc entry
Display size = 480x640
s** roadmap_config.c, line 620: found no 'schema' config file, check RoadMap installation
s## roadmap_locator.c, line 118: cannot open directory database (usdir)
Call stack:
roadmap_screen_refresh
roadmap_screen_repaint
bash-2.05$
Any help is apriciated.
Oh, by the way. Does this new version use work with the new maps from the roadmap website? I know that the older zroadmap version that I used needed some older maps.
Thanks!

You can install it drom the command line like this:
ipkg install zroadmap_1.0.12_1_arm.ipk
I do get this error, even though it seems to be installed:
ipkg install zroadmap_1.0.12_1_arm.ipk
Unpacking zroadmap...Done.
Configuring zroadmap...[: zroadmap: unknown operand
Done.
bash-2.05#
It may work, when I run it from the comand line it just complains about not finding the map files or the "schema" config file. If I can figure out where these files should go then it may work. I'll post back about any updates.

Ok, I got this package working! Here are the steps:
1 - Install the package listed on the previous page from the command line by typing ipkg install zroadmap_1.0.12_1_arm.ipk
.
2 - copy everything in /opt/QtPalmtop/share/roadmap/ to /home/zaurus/.roadmap/ mkdir /home/zaurus/.roadmap
cp -R /opt/QtPalmtop/share/roadmap/* /home/zaurus/.roadmap/
3 - download the new maps here: http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net/maps.html (http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net/maps.html) and place them in /usr/local/share/roadmap. Or just put them wherever you like and make a symlink to the right place. Also, look in /opt/QtPalmtop/share/roadmap/preferences for other possible map locations.
4 - uncompress the maps "tar xzvf [map_file_name]".
5 - launch roadmap!
-
xamindar,
I followed your directions because I had an old version of zroadmap on my C1000 and wanted to use the one with the newer maps, but it doesn't seem to recognize the newer maps.
Zroadmap launches but has a little yellow box in the screen which says "No map available" I placed the maps in the locations you said and I know it's "looking" there because when I removed usdir.rdm it would not even start up.
I'm using the North Carolina maps downloaded from from http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net/maps.html (http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net/maps.html)
Help....

hmm, does it spit anything out in the console when you run it from there? I downloaded the maps from that location and the usdir.rdm as well ( map directory for RoadMap version 1.0.8 and later). I'm using the california map only so far. If I remove my maps and leave only the usdir.rdm I don't get a yellow box saying there are no maps, I just get a blank roadmap screen.
You uncompressed the maps right? I don't know what it could be.
Also, try searching for your address in North Carolina with roadmap, it may just be trying to use a state that you don't have loaded. That was the first thing I did when I ran it.
-
Yeah, I uncompressed the files and I have the county .rdm and the usdir.rdm there. Well, actually I downloaded other counties and put them in there also...still same error...the application just closes when I try to find an address. These are addresses I was able to find before with the older version.
Here's what it spits out at console - if anyone can give me a clue from it, I'd appreciate it:
$ roadmap
SlSharedManager: can't get proc entry
Display size = 480x640
== roadmap_gps.c, line 678: cannot access GPS source gpsd://localhost

hmm, I got that proc entry error along with the "found no 'schema' config file" when roadmap couldn't find my config files. But that error went away. I don't know what it means though, it doesn't seem like it would be related.
Can you post your preferences file and tell me where you are putting your maps?
Sorry I can not help much. I actually got a lot of help getting this working from the mailing list http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net/list.html (http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net/list.html)
You might want to try that.

Corky, roadmap DOES run without gpsd running. I do it all the time to set up my waypoints before I hit the road.
RoadMapGPS just monitors the satalites that gpsd reports. It will only show something if your gpsd it running. The way I do it is I just start qpegps (the qpegps package comes with gpsd) which then starts my gpsd automaticaly. Qpegps also has a really nice screen that shows the status of my gps with graphs and location info. Then I load roadmap and tell it to start my trip. Works every time.
Any more luck on the new roadmap tombraider.

Nah, I wound up going back to my old install of zroadmap_1.0_2_arm.ipk I sure would have liked to be able to use the newer 2004 maps, oh, well.

I have zroadmap 1.0.3 (zroadmap_1.0-3_arm.ipk) installed and the files inside are dated 1-11-2005.
I also use maps from the same year as shown in my screenshot. 10-15-2005
These maps have always worked for me.
What is the difference between the new maps and the old ones?

Interesting. I was under the assumption that the new maps did not work with that version of roadmap. Everyone seems to be saying that throughout this thread. Maybe they do work, I never tried.

Curious, what version of roadmap is that? Help > About. That was the version I was using before I went back to the japanese rom, I never checked to see.
The new one I installed is 1.0.12. Also, one note about this new one. It speaks every intersection to you as you pass it, not like that old one that just spoke the first intersection then stopped.

there is more, but you get the idea.
I haven't used it while driving.
I've never used anything except the mapping function, none of the route functions.
I use it on my motorcycle.
I stop, get it out of the saddlebag, then use it to locate myself on the map.
I wouldn't have a clue as to how to make it speak to me
-
Okay, I downloaded zroadmap_1.0-3_arm.ipk from the Cacko feed over the internet on my Windows PC and then transferred it to a cf card and installed it on my Cacko 1.23 C1000 (after I uninstalled my old version of Zroadmap).
It installed great to internal from the ipkg installer.
I put my old maps in a roadmapold folder in /mnt/card/QtPalmtop/share/.
I put the new maps in a roadmapnew folder in /mnt/card/QtPalmtop/share/
(I have that path in my zroadmap preferences.)
I then ran from the zroadmap icon after renaming the roadmapold folder to roadmap and the app ran great...maps all worked and my trips worked.
I then renamed the roadmap folder BACK to roadmapold and renamed roadmapnew to roadmap, and the app would not run at all...just got "stuck" on the flashing icon and did not open.
I don't know what to think. There must be some difference between Jon's setup and my setup or a difference between the ipkg he downloaded vs my ipkg??? The new maps download from http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net/maps.html (http://roadmap.digitalomaha.net/maps.html) do not work for me with this version of Roadmap.

You are correct I tried it and it works with out starting gpsd. When I installed zroadmap I got an error message from the install and the icons did not show up in the applications folder so I started from the command promped and got the same message as tombraider so I started gpsd and it worked. I then went to Tab Settings found that they were there but wern't showing up so I edited one clicked ok and they finaly showed up . I think when you do that that Qtopia is restarted. It may be that all you have to do is restart Qtopia or reboot to get it to work after you install.

Yeah, I had to reboot to get the icons to show up with the 1.0.12 version mentioned in this thread, but they showed up without a reboot with the zroadmap_1.0-3_arm.ipk version.
Corky, which version do you have installed and do you have the new maps working on it??
Corky, roadmap DOES run without gpsd running. I do it all the time to set up my waypoints before I hit the road.
RoadMapGPS just monitors the satalites that gpsd reports. It will only show something if your gpsd it running. The way I do it is I just start qpegps (the qpegps package comes with gpsd) which then starts my gpsd automaticaly. Qpegps also has a really nice screen that shows the status of my gps with graphs and location info. Then I load roadmap and tell it to start my trip. Works every time.
Any more luck on the new roadmap tombraider.

Yeah, when you install packages through the package manager it will refresh the qtopia menus when you exit (that's why you get the "please wait..." message). But if you install it through the console it doesn't refresh the qtopia menus. In that case a reboot or edit of the tabs will refresh it. I usually just edit the tabs because I usually need to move the icon to the correct tab anyway.
One note. I don't think roadmap will start up at all if it can't find any maps. If it doesn't start up then just edit your ~/.roadmap/preferences file manually with the correct location of your maps.

I looked at my map files again and most US states, (besides Illinois) are from 2003.
I didn't check every one of them.
Maybe the ones I have of Illinois got repackeged sometime in 2005, and that's why the files have 2005 for the dates.
Here's a screenshot of Pekin, Illinois.
The light blue area on the left side of the pic is the Illinois river.
It seems that I have lost the color icons on my map screen.
I used to have a blue triangle for my location, and funny looking red icon for "map download".
Now I only get small black squares, as you can see in the pic.
I have to do some more reading, and bring the instructions with me when I go out of town.
Yesterday, on a motorcycle run, I couldn't remember how to use it
qpeGPS worked fine though
I hope they get vector maps for qpeGPS someday.
I have some stationary maps loaded in qpeGPS, but they cannot be zoomed.

How did you get maps for qpegps? I tried the built in download but it took hours and I couldn't figure out how to use the maps it downloaded. Are they accurate maps? Does it actually follow the streets?
-
When I install the 1.0.12 version, if I put the NEW usdir.rdm in my map location I get a yellow box that says "No map available" (yes, I DID edit the preferences file to look in my map location and roadmap looks there because if I rename or delete the usdir.rdm file, roadmap does not start at all and if I put the OLD usdir.rdm in there, it complains in console that I need to "upgrade" my version of usdir.rdm!).
So I have tried both the Cacko feed version and the 1.0.12 version and NEITHER one works with the new usdir.rdm and the new maps.
Wish I knew what magic you guys are using.
Our street name is misspelled on the old maps so I sure would like to be able to use the new ones.
I see the preferences file is quite different from one version to another. The location of the maps is referred to as General.Database: in one; and in another as Map.Path: There are other differences too.

Did you just install it with your old Roadmap still in place?
I deffinately would not install it while the other roadmap was installed. On my maching the new roadmap was on a fresh install, I had had no other versions on there before. Maybe that has something to do with it.
You might have tried this already, but it would be a good idea to delete the whole .roadmap directory in your /home/zaurus AND delete the /opt/QtPalmtop/share/roadmap directory that is listed in my steps and then install the new roadmap to make sure the preferences and schema files are the correct ones.
-
Yeah, I already did all that. Will try sometime when I have a fresh install on the device.
Thanks anyway.

I downloaded them here:
[a href=\"http://gps.pazu.info/]http://gps.pazu.info/[/url]
This page has links to several sizes and resolutions of *.jpg or *.gif maps
I think I had to convert them to *.png before using them in qpeGPS.
The page has instructions as to how to create or edit a text file that keeps the coordinates in the right location on the downloaded maps.
I don't have any street maps. These are county and state maps, which cannot be zoomed in qpeGPS.
You can zoom them in a graphics program, but then you lose detail after so many zoom levels.

I have found that even though I thought I changed the preferences file it did not work unit I created a folder /usr/share/roadmap
and placed the usdir.rdm there.
Once I did that and started the application I changed the preferences in the application to point to my sdcard for maps and it seems to be working properly for me.
Yeah, I already did all that. Will try sometime when I have a fresh install on the device.

was able to install the latest 1.0.12_1 version and use the new map files. The following is my own installation log, I installed it to my sd card. The link fixing probably should be handled by a post-install file, if the original packager has time to repackage the ipk.
uninstall zroadmap_1.0-3
rm -r /home/zaurus/.roadmap (preferences files)
ipkg -d sd install zroadmap_1.0.12_1_arm.ipk
Unpacking zroadmap...Done.
Configuring zroadmap...[: zroadmap: unknown operand
Done.

is there any interest in zroadmap 1.1.0 (2006 US map) on the sharp rom? Zroadmap is already available for opie/Angstrom, I can try to build one with the sharp compatible tool chain in OE if anybody is interested.

YES! There is. I still use zroadmap on my zaurus. It is great. I'm not sure but I think the version I currently have on it is 1.0.2 which works great except it does tend to freeze up some times and I have to kill it and reopen it. I would definitely love to have a new one.
-
Sorry to be so late responding, but I just got my C1000 recently, and even more recently discovered this thread. I downloaded 1.0.12 version of zroadmap using hints from this thread. (Works great!! Thanks!!!) I am interested in the newest version (1.1.0) of zroadmap too. Hope I'm not too late.
-
Bummer no one ever got around to compiling a newer version of roadmap for the Zaurus. The current place I live at is not on the old maps that my old version of zroadmap uses. Is it hard to compile the newer version of roadmap? Has anyone tried it?
