Title: Cases..
Post by: squint on June 26, 2003, 08:11:45 pm
I am looking into cases...

Does anyone know of any hard covered cases for the Z.  I have a 5500.  Also I was wondering if anyone has ever seen any sort of cradle that could be used in the car.. I would like to plug my Z in, in the car to listen to MP3s if possible but it would be nice if it was mounted nicely somehow.

Any ideas would be appreciated..

As far as hard cases go haven\'t seen any.

As far as car mounting check out this post on the Sharp forums.

Hello

I looked.. and looked and finally found a company (Piel Frama) that makes custom leather cases w/belt clip for the SL-5500.  The are VERY nice cases made from hand tooled leather.  I had to order mine from the WWW site posted below.  At the time they were only available direct from the manufacturer.  It did arrive in 3 days though!  Recently during my web searches I seem to recall seeing the cases being offered by a distributer in the US.  You might want to do a search before ordering from Spain   Here is the web link for the company Piel Frama.

I have a piel frama case for my 5500 and it is REALLY nice.  I wish they made a case for the 760.  I would recommend to anyone who\'s interested in a 5x00 case to get one of theirs.  The only complaint that I\'ve seen from people on the boards is the higher cost of the piel frama cases.  I think they are worth every cent.

Regarding the hard case - rino skin (http://www.saunders-usa.com/rhinoskin/index.cfm) makes cases.  I just went to their website, and it seems to have changed a bit.  You could probably find a universal style hard case that would fit a 5500.  I don\'t think they have a case made specifically for the Zaurus though.

good luck!

I picked up a Sumdex leather case at OfficeMax for about $25-$30. It fits both the 5500 and my 750. It also comes with a combo pen/stylus.

Does anyone know if the Piel Frama case will fit the 5600?  I know they are pretty close in dimensions, but Piel Frama won\'t commit to it working with the 5600.

No it won\'t work, with the way the battery sticks out.

As far as car mounts go, the zaurus cradle makes a really good one if it can be fixed in a suitable location.

I have a UKk Ford Focus, and I took out the ash tray, which just happens to be exactly the same size as the base of the 5500 cradle, I couldn\'t have wished for a better fit.  it is tight enough to not need any extra suport, or velcro.

It also happens to be just above the cig lighter socket, so power is nearby.

First off, dismantle the cradle, remove the usb wire by unplugging the connector, keep it in case you need to use it again later.  I wirelessly sync, so don\'t need it.

Find an old 5 volt phone charger that plugs into cigarette lighter socket.  Cut off the plug and solder on a zaurus style power plug, being extra careful to et the polarity correct.

Attach this to the back of the cradle, attach a zthin serial cable to the serial breakout on the back of the cradle. The little plastic lugs on the zthin cable have to be removed with a sharp knife so it will fit.

If you remove the ford double size radio, there is ample space to route the serial cable and power cable behind it, and ample space to work.

Route the serial cable to the glovebox which houses the gps device, an external antena comes from this and magnetically attaches to the roof.

Now insert the cradle into the hole left by the ashtray (making sure Saddam isn\'t already in there, he does like holes   )

nozcar1.jpg is the cradle in the ashtray with all cables connected, you can see the power cable in the cig lighter socket, but the gps cable is hidden.

zcar1.jpg is the zaurus in the cradle running qpegps.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pssmith/ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pssmith/)

The main beauty of this, is you just whack the zaurus into the cradle and it coneects to the power and gps, without any further messing with wires as they are attached to the rear of the cradle.

Tested as stable by driving over speed ramps (in empty private car park incase any plod are reading this) at 40mph and the zaurus stayed put and carried on telling me where I was.

Optionaly paint the zaurus black to match the dashboard (and car) colour.

Selling the car? no problem, just remove the cables and re-insert the ash tray and no one will ever know, just make sure you buy another black car with a \"zaurus cradle sized ash tray\" other wise black zaurus will no longer match, and cradle will no longer fit.

I\'ve been using one of these for over 2 months now, works fine and the price is right.

Greg, that looks a lot like the holder I\'m using now.    Actually, I\'m more interested in finding a  flip-open style case that allows me to use the 5600 without having to remove it.  So far, none of the \"generic\" cases I\'ve tried fit very well.

I have been using a hip pack to carry my Z, Targus keyboard, AC and auto charger, earphones and extra styli.
But I would like to find something with a little more room, and padding for the Z.

I have been checking out camera and CD player cases, but haven\'t found one with the room. Anyone have any ideas?

I have had no luck looking for a thin hard case for the 5600 that is a snug fit;
the Belkin I tried was 1/8\" too short;
I had to settle for a universal soft case when the 5600 travels in the briefcase;
innopocket makes aluminum cases for Palms, but they don\'t fit ;
the lack of a hard case  for the 5600 has been the biggest weakness found so far;

If one shows up, please let us know, thanks

I too struggled with the case decision, and the lack of product selection for Zaurus 5500 did not help. I ended up searching for other less customized options. Not sure if this might be what you are looking for, but this Otter case has worked great for me. It definitely does not fit in a shirt or coat pocket, so I primarily use it for travel when I need a hard case.

Zaurus 5500 fits pretty snugly with a little room to spare on height and depth.  Width is almost perfect.

I received a universal PDA case from amazon.co.uk today.
It\'s a perfect snug fit for a C860, and only £4.99!

It\'s a bit gratuitous, but I like showing people my Z! :-)

I really like the Nutshell case I got for my 5500.  It\'s a holster-type design, and accomodates the 5600 as well.  I have the belt clip version.  I\'ve had it for about a year now and it\'s done a good job protecting my Z.  Here\'s the web site, despite the fact they\'re in New Zealand shipping was reasonable and quick:

Yes I agree with you, the Piel Frame case (i had for the 5000d) was too good.

But for the C7xxx series you could check the PDair leather case. I got one along with the C750 (together deal), and while its not as leathery and as well finished as the Piel Frama leather, this case is pretty good actually.

The nice thing is it clips on to the Zaurus bottom hole and the side holes and thus doesnt require a case as such. Its more of a cover.

I\'m a sucker for PDA cases!
I\'ve got two for my C860, have a 3rd one on order from conics.net and now I\'ve seen that tuff-as-nuts website I may have to get another. :-)

I got the PDair case with my C860 when I ordered it from shirtpocket.
It\'s a really nice case.

The only problem I had with it is it\'s a bit awkward to get at the compact flash card. I had to unhook it and take it out of the case.
Maybe my case was a bit stiff, but I had to use a bit too much force to unclip my C860 from the case. It clips in easily enough though.

I was scared I might put too much pressure on the wrong part of the C860 and damage it.

I\'m going to stop reading this thread now.
It could cost me too much money! :-)

Well I used to have a 5500, 5600 is due to be delivered today, I used to use a GBA case for mine.  It had enough room for the Zaurus to fit in there as well as a couple of small items and was padded and had a strap to attach to your belt.  Though I did take the GBA tag off of it.  This was not a case for the newer GBA-SP and they can be found for about $10 or less from time to time.

vishhnja--

Tell me a little more about the the Nutshell case for your 760/860.  Did you get the full flap or the tab closure?  What happens when you have a compact flash WiFi card in the Zaurus, can you close the case with it in?  What options would you recommend for me?  Thanks.
Title: Cases..
Post by: vishnja on March 18, 2004, 06:17:53 am
Okay, I have the tan brown version with the tab closure, belt clip and loop and a card pocket. The Zaurus still fits into the case with the wifi card inserted, so this is not a problem at all.
My version looks very nice, though a bit too masculine to me: it has a kind of an \"Indiana Jones look\". Maybe it\'s the colour or the sturdy finish. But as I wanted to have a case that could protect my Zaurus and that would allow to reach the Zaurus easily, it\'s the right case even for a girl ;-).
I think you could get a more understated look with another colour and darker sems and by leaving out the card pocket. But the card pocket comes in handy for me, so I would recommend it.
If you would like to see pictures, I could send you some,

hope, this helps

I\'ve found Targus cases to be very nice and very affordable.  I\'ve been using the \"universal sport\" case for 1.5 years and I\'ve been very happy with it.  I bought it at Best Buy for $9.99.  Targus has it on their website for the same amount: <http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=PDAT05>

The Z attaches to the case with velcro.  I put only one velcro strip on the top (rear, of course) of my 5500, just below the CF slot.  This allows the bottom part of the Z to lift upwards so you can use the keyboard without removing it from the case (the velcro is very strong and secure).  My WiFi card sticks out the top a little, but you can still zipper the case around two sides.  The fit is slightly tight around the corners (when you zip it shut) but it hasn\'t been a big problem.  Just have to be careful not to catch the hinge of the screen protector when the zipper comes \'round.  The front and back covers extend slightly beyond the zippered sides providing excellent shock protection when you drop it.  I\'ve dropped mine a few times but my Z has never been harmed.

I\'ve just started looking at cases for my c860 and, so far, I think I may just buy another one of these Targus \"universal sport\" cases!  The c860 fits very well and you can even still use the keyboard without removing it from the case!

Targus seems to have a few new ones on their web site though, so I think I\'ll look at some of the others before ordering.

first  let me say that the piel frama is worth the money for a 5500 owner, i always have mine on my hip all day. plus an extra belt clip mounted in my car gives a convenient place to hang it then.

and that was nice zbones, real nice with the black. why didnt ithink of that?  should work nicely with krylons fusion paint(its the best i have found for plastic, really works nice)   but i cant decide on a color.

I just ordered a Copilot 30 PDA Carrying Case from mobileplanet.com for
$34.95 + $7.64 shipping.  Should be in the 1st of next week.
It was sized just a bit larger than my  new 5600 so I hope it will fit snug with
my D-Link CDF-660W wifi card.

Will repost when it gets in.

Copilot 30 PDA case is here.  It seems to be made rather well.
The top flap fastens to the main part of the case with velcro and has plenty of  space to handle the 5600 with it\'s DCW-660W wifi card installed.  The sides of the case are a little too big and doesn\'t fit snug to the Zaurus (though this doesn\'t appear to be a problem and a little padding could always be added).

Looks like a keeper unless I just happen to come across something better down the road.

Hmm I just plug the zaurus in start the music up and shove it and all the wires into the glove box. Works a treat and nothing obvious to nick if anyone looks through the window :-)
Bought a cheap generic cigarette lighter psu that works great, I get my music and my zaurus arrives fully charged on long journeys.

I like the look of the top one, the Extreme Body Suit. Seems that many of those guys cases are either discontinued or sold out though.

With my c860 soon to arrive, I\'m on the lookout for a nice case. Does anyone know if the C860 will fit in the Vaja Universal Pouch, the large one?

I wonder why they don\'t have more of their models on the English page. It looks as though the bi-fold case is only for the 700/750 so wouldn\'t fit the thicker 760/860.
I would like to have slots for cards as well.

Recently I ordered and received a Xigma case for my 5500. It\'s beautifully made, but...it\'s half suede. ICK.

I went back to Xigma\'s English page where I\'d found the case and ordered it before; I wanted to see if I\'d somehow missed that little detail about the suede. The English page is http://xigma.jp/en/ (http://xigma.jp/en/). Under \"Carrying Cases\" is the \'Other\' link I used before to find the case for the 5500. The model is listed along with a bunch of other PDAs; but the links to the cases are all now dead. So I can\'t look at the pics again to see what I missed, and it seems that they aren\'t selling 5500 cases anymore.

Grr! Now I have a great looking case that I really can\'t use because it\'ll get crappy very fast. What were they thinking, making a PDA case half suede!!??

Squint,

the Ipaq h4355 (the model with the thumb keyboard) is about the same size as the 5500, just a little thinner.
A case for that Ipaq model may fit the 5500
