I recieved two battery extenders for the Zaurus as christmas presents.
They were the ones seen all over ebay... that take 4 AA batteries and plug into the AC outlet on the Z. Well, I put batteries in it, and plug it in my Z. .. but not light turns on. Nor does the ZAurus show that AC power has been connected to it.
It says it works with all Zaurus 5x00 models. . . but does the 5600 use a different power supply than the 5500? Has anyone had luck with one of these units? I find it hard to belive that I got two seperate units that are both defective?.. does it simply not work with the 5600. Or maybe it simply doesnt' light up... I donno what to expect.

I made my own battery extender with parts from Radio Shack. Radio Shack sells the battery case and a Type B barrel plug. The AC power adapter that came with your Zaurus SL-5600 should let you know what the correct polarity is. The polarity for the SL-5500 and SL-C760 is positive center. When you have the battery extender filled with batteries in the correct polarity and plugged into your Zaurus, then your Zaurus should light up as though it were plugged into a wall outlet with the AC adapter.

I have one for my 5500, and it works fine. It has an on-off switch, maybe you missed that? No kidding, just in case, happens to the finest people

lol ... nice pyrates :: yea, I work in a camera store:::: Lots of people comming in with 'broken' digital cameras who put thier batteries in upside down.
Well ... it finnally worked one day: but only once the power was reaalllly far down.. . So for whatever reason, it seems to only deplete the batteries once the main lithium one starts to really die .... not a big deal I suppose : I was just expecting it to show the light all the time, not only when it was next to dead to begin with.

It'll depend on a couple of things - Is it a regulated battery extender, and what kind of batteries you have.
I built a battery extender for my Zs that usines rechargeable NiMH batteries. Because it isn't regulated I can't use Non-rechargeables, as 4x1.5v=6v which is *very* bad for the Zs charging circuit. (Alkaline batteries would probably sag under 6v very quickly under the load that the Z puts on it, but there is still that initial 6v when first plugged in.)
A regulated extender would have a circuit inside that forces the voltage to 5v all the time. Whether this will work with your Z will depend on how much power it can supply at the time. I've got both the original EA-70 2amp adapter and the EA-72 1amp adapter. The EA-72 cannot provide enough power to light the charging light on my SL-5500 when it is running, only when it is off. The 5x00 series seems to require a lot more power than the SL-Cxx0 series.
