Hi Guys,
Check this out!
http://www.archos.com/products/overview/pma_400.html (http://www.archos.com/products/overview/pma_400.html)
Sold my Zaurus a few months ago and bought an AV480 because I just couldn't wait for the PMA400, never regretted the purchase, but did miss my little Zaurus, now the PMA400 has been announced officially and I'll be getting one of those asap!!
:-)

Hi
PMA400 site soon to have an SDK. The English pdf manual is already on.

This is more of an off-topic subject really...
Anyway, the PMA400 runs at least Qtopia 1.6 and includes all the standard Qtopia apps (Calendar, Email, etc) plus Opera. So it comes with pretty much the same software as the Zaurus, minus Hancom Office, but with a newer version of Qtopia and of course all the enhanced media software. Plus they are releasing a SDK for it and it syncs with the Trolltech Qtopia Desktop, so it possibly works under Linux too.
Shame there is no keyboard and it is pricey at $800.
-
Its got usb host so I would hope a keyboard can be used.
-
omro,
Can you compare both machines after some hands-on?
Thank you in advance.
-
Certainly :-)
-
OK... I've merged these two threads (lgurevich must not have seen the omro's thread on the same subject ) and I've also moved the thread to the off-topic forum.

I am in no way connected to any company responsible for this device, hense this is not an ad. I just saw this on /. and wondered what the potential for this device is. Archos is going to ship a Linux PDA/Media Player running Qtopia. Here is the spec sheet on this thing.
http://www.archos.com/products/prw_500594_specs.html (http://www.archos.com/products/prw_500594_specs.html)
My first thought was "There is my next Z". What I am wondering is if it is a Linux-based device seemingly similar in operation to a Zaurus, will there alternative OS's for it? OpenZaurus would rule on this thing. What is the potential for this thing?
-
The Archos device has way better video and audio playback than zaurus. It also record mp3 and video as well.
I doubt that there will be alternative os' for it. I would just be happy with what it was shipped with.
You will be able to install apps on it, but the multimedia apps it comes with are probably superior since it is a multimedia device.
-
wish the screen was 640x480. Otherwise a great Zaurus version media center. You know, once used to read things in 640x480, you'd never go back to 320x240.

For those who haven't seen already, Archos has announced the
Linux-based PMA 400 (http://www.archos.com/products/overview/pma_400.html?sid=j2232y24byfooj2b3jss3s). I, for one, am interested as to what it sync's with (Outlook, Qtopia Desktop, etc...)

Why can't people do a quick search on the forums PRIOR to posting.... this is the third post on the very same topic (in the wrong forum, I might add).
I'm merging this thread with the other one...

30GB HDD - wow
WLAN - great
CPU - does anybody know more about?
Display - 320x240 sigh...
Keyboard - none
SDK - coming

Looks ok - but 320x240 screen isn't up to scratch.....
In comparison, a Zaurus SL6000 has:
HDD: Well, mine's only got a 1Gig micro drive, but adding in the 1Gig SD card and external USB drives....
WLAN: yep, and works a treat..
CPU: not fast enough (one day I'll sort that out by building Qtopia and stuff with softfloat and adding support for the Toshiba chipset's blitter stuff)
Screen: 640x480
Keyboard: Take your pick - IrDA (pocketop, etc) or USB.
Mouse: yep, that works as well (any USB mouse should work fine)
Of course, the Archos will actually do a decent job of video playback, which the SL6000 just refuses to do......
-
plus the archos is a one stop shop for recording off the TV.
-
The archos device blows away the Zaurus for audio and video playback - smooooooth and a nice framerate. It runs qtopia 1.7.1.
-
my C760.
-
This is a great zaurus replacement. The merged forum has got something wrong though, the resolution is 640x480 and 720x480(? I don't know how an lcd can carry both these resoultions but the tv out might) If they keep this up, release new hardware versions once in a while and perhaps shrink it some in the next version, Then they've got a steady customer. Ideally I'd wait for the next version, but seeing what has happened to sharp, and the vast amounts of alternative linux pdas, I'll buy one as soon as I have the money.
I Thought the sl5500 was too big, not to mention all other pdas made by sharp, but with all these features size is passible. I can surf the web and download gigabytes of porn, watch it on my tv or show it to my friends, move all the porn to my computer and exchange the contents on the archos with gigabytes of pim or text documents that i can either input through onscreen keyboard or textrecognition, THERE IS A FOLDAWAY KEYBOARD AVAILABLE AS AN accessory (no I am not affiliated with archos) so it will be possible to do text input on the thing also, even without bringing a fullsize keytronic (Does keytronic even have usb) keyboard.
WE CAN start bothering Trolltech to release a qtopia 2.1 release for the pma400:P
Nuff ranting from me, only one last word of wisdom (or two). Any alternative os and its applications MUST be compatible with the original os, I belive this is vital for the survival of a community, not to mention enlisting new people. If you buy such a kit and find that there is loads of great software, but only a third of it is possible to use at your pda/mediaplayer at a time then people will run with tails between their legs. I think this IS A LESSON WE HAVE LEARNED ON THE ZAURUS, AND ALL COMMUNITY PAGES SHOULD HAVE WARNINGS ABOUT CREATING INCOMPATIBLE SOFTWARE; IT SHOULD BE FROWNED UPON!! We need a "qtopia/opie standard base" Maybe it is possible to use lsb in some extent?
EDIT: I was WRONG, It is only qvga, I allmost started to cry when I found that out. Once again a company releases a device with a obvious defect. f*ck it, I just saved myself €800.
-
Now all I need is qtopia bittorrent (if it's not available)(for porn that is)
-
How hard could it be to port OpenZaurus to such a device? It runs Linux and Qtopia by default and has flashable firmware. If it smells like a Z and acts like a Z..
The reason I brought this up is that it is becoming apparent that Sharp is moving away from the PDA market (starting with the US) and therefore we can't expect too many more versions of the Zaurus. A device like this could keep all the kick *ss apps we all use and love on our Zaurii and simply port them to the next Zaurus-like device.

hmm... maybe people will learn how to use forums in the new year
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink
How about a forum for the PMA400 series? I know it is not a Zaurus, but all these devices are common using Linux with Qtopia/Opie, like simpad and this already has a forum. A PMA400 forum could benefit all Linux device users, particularly as Archos are currently the only manufacturer officially selling a Linux Qtopia device to the rest of the world.

How about a forum for the PMA400 series?
A good idea but why not wait until the thing is at least available?

In france, Paris we have the Linux Solution 2005 Expo at this moment and Archos is there.
We are able to see the New Archos PMA 430.
this links above to have some Photos
I can get some extra technical answers on the device (great one)

and also jbmm (http://www.jbmm.net)
PS : Jaffar is working in Archos and a very nice guy.

Archos PMA430 is available at amazon.com , $799.99
PMA430 @ amazon $799.99 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0007LNDU6/qid=1107439753/sr=8-3/ref=pd_bbs_3/103-1129999-5885420?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846)
-
wow. That's more than the 6000 retail (and we saw that $400 was the price point for many). Though the multimedia aspect of it is very appealing I think that is too much for us or joe sixpack. I suspect the price point for this to be closer to $550 or as high as $650 (price of HP's flagship PDA).

Why does Amazon list it as the "PMA430" but Archos calls it the [a href=\"http://www.archos.com/products/overview/pma_400.html]"PMA400"[/url]? If you look at the Amazon photos, the model number printed on the device is "PMA400." Are the PMA430 and the PMA400 the same thing?

Does anybody know which processor the archos uses? What I'd really like to know is whether programs compiled for the Zaurus will work on the Archos or will require recompilation. I suppose eventually it won't matter if we get a cross-compiler but it would be great if the Zaurus programs just ran on the Archos. So, does anybody know?

430 stands for 400 series with 30G hard drive. There will be a 80G version.
Just like its AV400 has AV420 and AV480, two versions
-
Thanks. Do you know when the 80G model is coming out?

Here's a link to the Archos Fan site, check out the WMV video of a guy demoing the device. I'm more impressed now than I was before, the USB host accessories make this one tempting device.

It looks at least one person has recieved his. He has tried Zaurus apps on it too. Mild sucess. Some apps worked fine, some apps needed trickery to work, most didn't work at all.

I've just watched the vid, I've been looking at Archos stuff for a while. Very impressed, I think that will be my next machine someday, I'll probably wait for prices to be a bit more favorable, i.e. when they release the next one ;-) With opie-reader, zbedic and portabase I'd be set.
I'm gonna read up on it later, once again Tux does us proud, it's a great piece of kit and a great use of Qtopia.
-
I'm sold on this. The 320x240 LCD res is no issue for me, after having a C series with a res so high I had to strain to read it, I prefer 320x240 on a small screen - for me it's optimal. Plus (finger's crossed) I've never seen a dead pixel on a 320x240 display in all my years. Also from my own experiments in the past, driving 640x480 is gonna require a lot more go-go juice from the processor etc than 320x240. Probably why YP3700 felt so much faster than my old 860 even with half the clock speed. It works up to 720x570 res. (PAL) when output to a TV etc. and I noticed on a forum all my favorite Z apps which I'm now using on my Yopy work out-of-the-box. I'd wait for Hancom to be ported which I've read is on it's way. Interstellar Flames works ;-) Dunno about Doom but it's critical.
At the mo I have an Ubuntu PC running MythTV but our house is going Mac in the next few months, all the old junk is destined for charity shops and I'd like something to fill the digital recording gap, if I can get something that does that, hold all my music (incl. Oggs evidently), replaces the PDA and still lets me keep Qtopia on a device I can even take on trips etc. then that's the one for me. The USB host is just another bonus. If a solution for iTunes compatibility ever comes out it would be completely perfect for me. I wonder if any USB keyboard will work?
I may leave it upto a year for the price to be right for us, but after the new macs, a heap of bills, some dental work, a holiday, a robosapien v2 and whatever else my kiddie-within needs/wants this year, IT will be on the list.
The only thing I'm not clear on is how it's wired up for recording TV, we only have digital satellite as their is virtually no reception of analogue here. I know it can be connected via Scart but I wonder if live TV from the a/v input can be watched. If anyone get's one and/or knows the answer do let me know.
;-)
-
FYI, price tag already starts falling at amazon.com. It is $759.99 now.
And release data in US is set to be 2/15

I don't not see why not. If you can record with it, you can view it. Looks like they also have a tv cable, for an analog video signal

Video playback is very nice, and you won't really notice when you play videos. Having a larger resolution screen decreases the battery life.
-
I don't know if I'm right here, but the PMA400 does not seem to have CF or SD or whatever slot.I guess that 30 GB is enough, and two USB slots, one with USB host is more than enough, but it just seemed strange. How are we supposed to transfer data to an external source, or move data from one device to another (e.g On a trip)?
-
USB host connection if you're transferring from a digital camera or you can do wifi with a PDA/notebook. You could always just get a card reader on USB host.
-
Correct. It also has Wifi, so...I guess it's ok.They left us to choose, just like Sharp did with the wireless.Go figure.
The Archos sounds like a great device! It certainly has more value for money. But strangely, the Zaurus still looks like the device I'd buy.Or mabye the Yopy 3500, if I found it for 200 Euro or less. Those devices rule.

Are the the Zaurus, the not-so-supported-and-discontinued Yopy, and mabye a Ipaq with Familliar or the Archos our only choices?
That doesn't leave us much freedom. But I guess I can't really complain. The Zaurus is really sweet. If the Archos becomes supported too, It also enters the sweet devices domain. But I don't see that coming.Soon.

Don't forget the Zaurus is discontinued and unsupported for everywhere except Japan. The PMA400 is a supported device.
There will be more linux handheld devices running Qtopia being released this year....
-
Isn't the 3700 the fat one?
It's a little thicker to accomodate the CF card.
Are the the Zaurus, the not-so-supported-and-discontinued Yopy, and mabye a Ipaq with Familliar or the Archos our only choices?
Yes, but as ipotter said, the Z is not supported outside Japan, the same applies to the Yopy (the 3700 is not discontinued) outside Korea, the iPaq is not an option unless you know which machines support Linux, where the get Linux and how to do it, and the Archos.
If the Archos becomes supported too, It also enters the sweet devices domain.
I don't understand what you mean by supported? Supported by whom?
I think people get easily distracted by this support thing, if you have a problem nowadays, you go online, find the right forum or site and sort the problem out. If the machine goes belly up then you return it to the supplier. With the Zaurii I had, I never relied on Sharp for anything, ShirtPocket was where I bought my 860 and they were responsible for fixing/replacing it - how they dealt with Sharp was irrelevant to me as a customer. My 5500 was off eBay, if it died - tough luck. When my first Yopy was playing up, YopyPDA UK were the people I called. In fact, I've never contacted a manufacturer in my life AFAIK regarding any product, only the vendor. i.e. the people who take my money and give me a receipt
2005 is a big year in our house, I've a lifetime of cluttered machines etc and PC's which are all destined for /dev/null. The PC's (finally) go within the month for Mac's and I will be getting the Archos as soon as the price is right. I really like it, the more I read, the more my MythTV setup seems pointless, it will be a household item more than mine personally. The Yopy serves me well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that ipotters words are prophetic and new machines are on the horizon, I'm optimistic about Linux handhelds in a way I've never been before, they're all good - they're all fantastic and more is to come. I for one think Trolltech has done a real service to the Linux community in making something which was once a dream for many of us Linux old-timers a reality.

The PMA430 has a special trick. Qtopia and it's apps run in 8 bit, but the video and multimedia apps run 16 bits. Not sure why they did this. But they will have a special "multimedia sdk" that I would bet has some more information on this.

The pma430 uses an omap1510. Zaurus apps do run on it, with the exception of some that write directly to the framebuffer, and others that install to non standard places, like apps that create their own tab in launcher.

Me, neither. Web browsing in 8-bit color is pretty lame.
-
now that's a nice toy :-)
However sice I pretty much don't get time to watch tv at home let alone while out and about I'll stick to my 860. But hey, come the lottery win..........
-
The review (http://www.kevinboone.com/pma400.html) reads:
"Even the meagre configurability of Qtopia is not made available.'
"The way that the Linux underbelly has been concealed from the end user is irritating to a Linux user."
"If you do have to reboot the unit (e.g., because the touchscreen has stopped working), the date gets reset back to January 27th, 2005), and any manual configurations changes you've made get set back to the factory defaults. "
It seems some of the great fun of using (playing with) Zaurii is lost!?

Or maybe not, you can run a konsole and Archos have published a new firmware, which presumably if you are feeling brave you could customise the rom anyway.

On the machine I played with, it seemed as configurable as Qtopia 1.7 on my handheld. I was happy with it.

Don't know how, seemed no different to my old Zaurii, the terminal was there, don't know if there is a difference between the one they had in the store and the one the reviewer had.
"If you do have to reboot the unit (e.g., because the touchscreen has stopped working), the date gets reset back to January 27th, 2005), and any manual configurations changes you've made get set back to the factory defaults. "
It seems some of the great fun of using (playing with) Zaurii is lost!?

I couldn't verify the rebooting thing. But I had real problems with my C860 and the time on it, in fact, for keeping time it was useless. It felt like any other Qtopia machine, resolution was good, good form factor but with all the A/V goodies.
At the £549 price tag Dixons (UK) are charging, I could buy a lot of other things, so it looses out there. I'd consider it only when the price is much less than half of that. IF I had the money right now to burn, I'd get it though

Seach of the archos PMA400 shows it available at http://www.compuplus.com/insidepageNoLinks...ogle&id=1003800 (http://www.compuplus.com/insidepageNoLinks.php?refer=froogle&id=1003800) for 685. US.
It is getting close to being on my wish list. I have noticed on ebay right now that everything Z is going for more than it was last year at this time.
Once enough of these get in peoples hands it won't be long until they run whatever is available to Z's now.
I will keep my z for now (I still have 4 amigas).

Zautrix will be working on an Archos port of KDEPIM/PI soon, FYI.
