OK, guys, looks like we've identified all of the major issues in 1.22 release, time to prepare the first hotfix.
What I need from those who had wireless cards, which were not identified properly is to post here what you endded up adding to the hostap_cs.conf file to get your card recognized. I will include these entris into the hotfix, so that your cards are supported without a need to tweak config files.
-
Another problem.
I can't use "root privilege" under Qtopia by checked "Execute with root privilege (not secure)". I can't launch the application (eg. Zeditor)
-
Is there a publicly accessible list?
Maybe add an option to use no wallpaper at all?
-
Any possibility of adding to Hotfix A (or some future release wishlist) the ability to toggle on/off a feature that lets clamshell users make thier machine go into suspend (and exit from suspend) on the open/close of the lid?
For Example:
A. When the feature is ON open/close would cause suspend/resume respectively.
B. When feature is off the open/close would not affect the palmtop state (except to turn off display as usual).
I find it a major pain in the arse to keep hitting off when I am done using the unit, which means I often open it to find the battery is dead. Of course for Mp3 and movie (listening) you would want to keep the unit running when closed, hence the need for a toggle.
I brought this up a long time ago in a thread here on ZUG and (as I recall) you thought it was a worthwhile idea. So I just thought I should mention it again in hopes that it may be added to hotfix A or at least a future release of some kind.
In any case, Great Job and Thank you for all your hard work !!

I would like to request for the option to "disable auto-rotate", and also omnicron' sugestion.

Can you identify what exactly you've identified? This is probably going to make this thread much more effective (as in, you asking if there's any other major issues - people may assume that their problem is going to be fixed).
Haven't tried 1.22 yet myself, but plan on doing so soon. Good work, thanks :-)

Hi,
let's go back to what was asked:
I had to change the hostap_cs.conf for my D-link DCF-660W to be recognised as such. There was already an entry for a similar card and it would probably have worked with the original file but my Z reported my card to be a "Zcomax XI-325H 200mW" and I didn't like that. For both cards there was the same vendor id.
I commented out the Zcomax entry and removed the comment on the vendor id of the D-Link card and added a comment to the version in the same block. The version is what is reported on my card but it didn't work wihout commenting out. The result is:
#----
card "D-Link DCF-660 11Mbps WLAN Card"
# version "D-Link", "DCF-660W", ""
manfid 0xd601, 0x0005
bind "hostap_cs"
#----

Hi, i have a socket CF bluetooth card. I try to use my motorola v525 phone as a modem va BT with GPRS. In the network settings, the z (c-760) finds my phone with bluetooth, and that's all. I cannot make a pair. I read some howtos, they all use the btctl binary, and i have no such thing, i didn't want to setup anything like this, because on the homepage i read that it should work out of the box. What can i do to make a pair of those devices? (Enter pin code on the Z, than the phone ask me to enter, only then the phone accept modem commands via BT).

What can i do to make a pair of those devices?
It's easiest to initiate pairing from the phone. Use the menu option on your phone to add a bluetooth device. The phone should discover the Zaurus (and any other BT devices in range). In the phone's menus, select the Zaurus as the device to add. The phone should prompt you for a PIN ... use "1234" (the BlueZ default) and the pairing should complete.
-
the phone cannot find it, where can i make the z discoverable?

Hi,
the most critical fix for me would be the battery charging issue (on SL-C860).
My SL-C860 is brand new and I don't want to overcharge the battery.
On the other hand, is it already known what happens in that case ?
Is the battery still charging (with the risk of destroying it), when the LED is on ?
What is the risk of loading it more than 4 hours ?

When you create a new BT GPRS on Zaurus and start to connect, then the phone should aask you the PIN code, which is 1234. After that Zaurus and your phone will pair. At least this is how it works with my phone.

I've already sent a notice to the guy, whochupdated battery driver for me.
However this seems to be a strange issue though. I've noticed that a couple of times on my own Zaurus, but after that both of my Zs charge just fine with out any problems.
Maybe you should let it charge for a few hours and then next time you charge it will work as normal...

mavlovsky: the phone doesn't ask for pin code, maybe, because it can be initialized with the standard atz. I am not very familiar with bluetooth, but for palmos, i wrote a chatscript with the proper init strings to make my phone connect. Where can i put it on my Z?
-
After i put the proper init string in the init string section, it still hand with initializing modem, and the phone doesn't do anything. Could you recommend me some stuff to read about the topic to make it work, from command line, etc, i am familiar with linux, but just not with bluetooth. The phone is motorola V525.

Hi,
1. Is it possible to add some configurations for debugging the WLAN-communication?
2.Is it possible to at some constaints, that the light doesn't suspend after 0 or 1 second?
Thank you flens
-
Hi,
the issue with charging is in fact very strange.
When my Z is turned off the charging always works fine. It is only an issue when the Z is turned on and connected to the power supply. I expect that under these circumstances the power to be used for charging and for the device itself. When charging is done the light should go off and the power should be used only for the device itself. I have an iRiver mp3 player which shows exactly this behavior.
My Z when I bought it with the original Sharp Rom usually didn't turn off the charging light when it was switched on and connected to power. With Cacko 1.21b the light usually went off and now with Cacko 1.22 it is always on when the Z is turned on and connected to power.
I also fear that my battery doesn't like it to be charged all the time and I now think about what I should do. If the problem persists I will probably don't use the Z with the power line connected but that will make everything difficult.
Any suggestions?
Kind regards, Jan

Hi! qtredesktop starts in qvga mode if i launch it from icon, but it starts in vga mode if i start it from command line. This is on sl-c760.

is is also possible to release a kernel without the sharp splashscreen, i like to see how the kernel is loading. alternately could you release the kernel source or patch so that i can compile it myself.
thanks

This is a quote form Cacko ROM home page:
Kernel source used in Cacko ROMs is available here: http://developer.ezaurus.com/sl_j/source/source_dl.htm (http://developer.ezaurus.com/sl_j/source/source_dl.htm)
Tarballs of patches to the kernel and configuration files are available here:

So, this means that currently it behaives exactly like it did with original Sharp ROM, which means it's most likely OK for the battery.

Hi! qtredesktop starts in qvga mode if i launch it from icon, but it starts in vga mode if i start it from command line. This is on sl-c760.
A lot of the apps not specifically designed for the Cxx0 series do this.
To stop the icon starting in QVGA, tap-hold the icon and uncheck "Display with magnified screen"

Hi ALL,
my SanDisk CF-Wifi Card is also recognized as "Zcomax Xi-325H 200mW", but seems to work properly :-)
Another prob is from my point of view much more important.
After flashing Cacko 1.22 (Lisa) and installation of VNC-Server from Cacko-feed the VNC-client on my XP-Box does not respond to keyboard and mouse (although I can see the picture from Zaurus).
The same configuration works well at Cacko 1.21 (Elen) Hotfix B.
Best regards
Cmpayc

Did you reboot the Z after installing the VNC server?
-
I really like the improvements and simplifications in this Rom version. The things that (i think) should be fixed are:
-D-link wifi properly detected (already described in this thread)
-The confounded backlight issue, which was never resolved in the previous version and continues to be a problem. I often prefer the backlight set to the lowest level, but in this setting it will do unexpected turn-off kind of things (there was a thread just the other day describing this in full, i did so a few months ago)
-There are some issues with kino that may or may not be suitable for a hotfix. Probably the easiest or least intrusive of these is that when kino is playing back, all the key strokes are directed to it, even if it's in the background. This makes eg browsing a bit difficult, as the arrow keys don't work as expected.
-Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the expected dtm filename case was changed from 1.21. Not sure how that would have happened, but i had to change the case of my old data files so they would overwrite the new ones.
I've experienced some really strange suspend/screen save issues, especially while kino is playing audio files, and (seperate problem) setting kino to enable underclocking during audio playback really FUBARs my z until it's rebooted (not to mention that it doesn't play smoothly while underclocked, anyway). This is of course easily enough resolved by not checking that box; i just thought i'd mention it.
Future stuff:
I've been using 1.22 long enough now to have a wishlist for the next version (yeah, i know...never satisfied). First and foremost is the browser and email apps. The included email client is pretty much worthless as it doesn't support enough options (secure connections, for example) for me to use it. I installed OM/Pi for the first time right after flashing, and i haven't found any reason not to replace the default email app with it. Excellent program. I can understand the hesitation to replace the other (almost equally inept) default PIM apps because of the syncing and dtm issues, but i don't believe that's an issue for email.
And browsers... this is an area that has me confused. When i got my z from a previous owner seven months ago, it had opera 7.30 installed. Now, the brand-spanking-new 1.22 rom has 7.25, which (still) has issues that a mature browser just shouldn't have (don't get me started on netfront). Why is a version months old the standard for our shiny new ROM?
Edit: Okay, i see. After reading a thread in the security forum it seems clear that the newer versions of opera are flaky. Too bad. It could use some fixing.
Kino2... what an improvement in multimedia capabilities it represents! Nevertheless, the interface is awkward, and adding files to a playlist seems to take a very long time. Adding a directory to a playlist only works if the directory depth is one, which isn't how most of my media library is arranged. And it's more sluggish than the old player was. So it's a huge step in the right direction, especially in consolidation of capabilities, but a bit rough around the edges. But wow, that video playback is purdy!
So now you have my input... unsolicited as it may have been . 8)

For anyone that's concerned about the battery overcharging, there's a very low level protection circuit in the battery itself that would prevent any damage regardless of what the Zaurus is doing.
Lithium Ion batteries will emit a flammable gas if they're overcharged. Shortly after they start doing that, they become hot enough to ignite that gas. With such serious consequences, there's no way a company would let it overcharge because of a software problem. Even if the protection circuit were to fail, it should be designed to fail open so that the battery just stops working.

Sounds like a pocket-load of fun. And remember: disabling the overcharge detection circuit might constitute an act of terrorism in your country

I have an SMC 2642W card - doesn't look like it's been mentioned here yet. The new ROM thinks it is that 200 mA one, "Zcomax Xi-325H 200mW" I think (sorry, I haven't got the card with me) and I can't get it working.
I can't find the hostap.conf file - where is the file please, and how do I work out what to put into it to ID my card?
Thanks
Ian.

Did you reboot the Z after installing the VNC server?
Yes, I did.
Additionally I have noticed that my Z reboots (Win-like :-) after uninstall of VNC-Server on 1.22 Lisa.

I've the same problem with the VNC server as cmpayc... Rebooting doesn't help.

I can't find the hostap.conf file - where is the file please, and how do I work out what to put into it to ID my card?
Hi Ian,
the filename is hostap_cs.conf and it is located under /etc/pcmcia
If your card is reported as "Zcomax Xi-325H 200mW" it has the same manfid as many other cards (for example my D-Link 660W).
You can just edit the Zcomax entry.
Use the command
cardctl ident
to find out what your card reports and change the entry accordingly.

Has anyone managed to use a swap file in RAM?
Can create & attach using SD card, but cant attach using RAM, with a failed to attach swapfile message, swap file creation is also slightly different, RAM goes 33% then completes while SD card goes 33%, 66% then complete.
Anyone know what I am doing wrong as I would prefer to use some of my 56mb of unused flash memory for the swap file.

I'm aware of the problem but I have no sulition ther than setting minimum level via hardware keys... Sorry, you have to thank Sharp for not providing the source code for their Qtopia version...

Kino2 will be updated, but not too soon. As a workaround, you can reasign keys in kino2 to those not used by the browser.
-Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the expected dtm filename case was changed from 1.21. Not sure how that would have happened, but i had to change the case of my old data files so they would overwrite the new ones.
The problem is that you should have created a tarball of your DTM data instead of just copying it. When you copy files over FAT formatted card, case is not preserved. I've updated Cacko FAQ to reflect this.

OM/Pi doesnt properly support non-latin character sets. It completely blocks GUI when retrieving mail from large mailbox.
Secure connections can be easily setup with existing email client by using stunnel, which is included in 1.22 ROM. For example, I'm reading and writing email from my Zaurus using Google mail, which requries SSL connections.

Because personaly I saw absolutely no difference between 7.30, 7.55 and 7.25, and 7.25 is the release version from SL-C6000.

You're not doing anything wrong, mas already said RAM swap wasn't working yet.

No, you can't create a sapfilw in RAM, although option is present...
I've updated FAQ with this info.

I didn't realize the hardware keys used a different means. It does seem to work properly that way... thanks!

Wow, that's a nasty "feature" i wasn't aware of. Is that just for the Z or for FAT flash cards in general? Thanks for clearing that up, the problem made no sense to me.

I'm noticing a problem with the KeyHelper support in 1.22 ...
Using the Home+Any feature to launch the apps configured in keyhelper.conf works fine, but setting up keyhelper.conf to assign @qcop actions seems to have no effect. Assigning @text actions works correctly, as does @exec. I'm guessing this may be a known problem since the keyhelper.conf entries for CyrInput "nextKbdLayout()" messages are commented out, but I don't know if it's been "officially" reported.
As a workaround, it's actually possible to do the following:
M = @exec /opt/QtPalmtop/bin/qcop QPE/TaskBar "showInputMethod()"
But it's a lot slower than if KeyHelper were doing the qcop directly
Not super critical, but I think it's worth putting on the bug list. Or if you want to shoot me a copy of the source for CyrKeyboard (PM me for my email), I'll be happy to see if I can find the problem
-

That is a feature of FAT. FAT is case insensitive just like the OS it was made for.

Hi Ian,

If your card is reported as "Zcomax Xi-325H 200mW" it has the same manfid as many other cards (for example my D-Link 660W)....
Thanks for the reply, Jan.
But, it looks like the hostap_cs.conf file only changes what is displayed on-screen, or I just don't know what's going on. I looked at the format and I deleted everything except the SMC 2642W (which was in there but had the "manfid" field commented out).
It still doesn't work - with my modified .conf file, the LED comes on on the card but stays on (while trying to detect it). It doesn't ever get to the point of being connected to the Zaurus (i.e. ejectable). At least when the C860 thought it was the Zcomax I could eject it cleanly, although I couldn't connect the the network.
Unfortunately I haven't got much time to play around (and do I really have to reboot it every time? I'm pretty clueless about this stuff...)
Thanks,
Ian.

Hi,
here is the code to add to hostap_cs.conf for the buffalo wli2-cf-s11 wifi card.
card "BUFFALO WLI2-CF-S11"
version "BUFFALO", "WLI2-CF-S11", "", ""
# manfid: 0x026f, 0x030b
bind "hostap_cs"
Thanks for your great work.
-
If your card works as a Zcomax then it will also run identically with any other definition in the hostap_cs.conf file that has a 'bind "hostap_cs"' line.
If you comment it out and your card stops working it is because the version line your card is reporting is different, so the Z can't find a definition anymore. Either uncomment the manfid line (so the Z finds it in the same way it found the Zcomax) or use "cardctl ident" to figure out what version line your card is reporting and use that instead of what's currently there.
I think this "Zcomax issue" can be solved pretty easily. Put a default generic definition into the standard Cacko hostap_cs.conf file just called "801.11b WiFi Adapter" or something else equally generic with the manfid line present, and comment out the Zcomax manfid line. Without a brand name there should be no reason for most people to think that the card had been "misdetected". What do you think, maslovsky?

Well, if people didn't care about card name, everyone would just use Zcomax. But apparently people want to see the card they own, not just "somethng"
The source of the problem is that most of the wifi cards are the same. And many manifaturers only bother updating a sticker on the card, not version string or manfid.
Howevere many cards still can be identified by using the version string and this is what I'm trying to do in the hotfix, so that everyone is happy

All keyhelper functionality works. The lines you mentioned were added a long time ago when I was experimenting with the merged applet and Fn + Shift didn't work yet. There is one catch tough the symbol between @qcop and channel name must be TAB, not space. That may be the resson why your own qcop etries didn't work...

I'm going to have exactly this card soon for testing. After that I'll be able to either make it work and include an update in hotfix A or confirm that it doesn't work with hostap drivers meaning it won't be supported by Cacko ROM...
So, please, just wait a bit...
-
There is one small asthetic feature I've noticed which was the same on Cacko 1.21 ...
On the applet docking bar the libnetmonapplet.so quite often overlaps other applet icons. If it helps, the applets I have on the bar just now are:
clock applet
kopi alarm applet
clipboard applet
net mon applet
memory applet
kbd applet
card mon applet
comb battery applet
volume applet
If I disable the net mon applet (or even the clipboard applet which it overlaps) and then re-enable it, the applet bar sorts itself out though.

It seems Kino2 causes early suspends when running from battery, if left open.
Can anyone test this? Just play a file, and let kino2 sit without input for a minute or 2.
My Z suspends after a minute or so if I let kino2 running, but stays on if I close it.
Something to look into.
Edit: scratch that, the Z goes to sleep too fast even when kino's not running.
More of a minor problem: your icon for .wav files doesn't have a high-res version (for thumbnails view)

On the applet docking bar the libnetmonapplet.so quite often overlaps other applet icons. If it helps, the applets I have on the bar just now are:
The problem is that netmonapplet is one the applets, which shipped with Sharp ROM and we don't have source code for...
I've tried building a version from Qtopia 1.6.2 and it worked, but it lacked some of the features, such as button with connection info, wireless signal level, etc.
-
More of a minor problem: your icon for .wav files doesn't have a high-res version (for thumbnails view)
That I can easily fix
-
One thing I've noticed is that Kino never has the right time length for my mp3s. Is this a known issue?
-
I have a few queries and bugs-
Wifi card query -
I have a wifi card that has the following output from cardclt ident :
Socket 0:
product info: "INTERSIL", "HFA384x/IEEE", "Version 01.02", ""
manfid: 0x0156, 0x0002
function: 6 (network)
When I Insert it into my Z, it is recognised as "Senoa SL-2011CD/SL-2011CDPLUS"
This card is not defined in /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf, so where is that coming from?
I created a wifi connection but when I try to connect the card gets "suspended".
$ cardctl status
Socket 0:
3.3V 16-bit PC Card [suspended]
Please help !!! I've spent hours trying to sort this out.
Bug for 122
1. Citytime displays the date sa "Jan 13dayThu17:36"
Thanks, Dawn

I suspect that's an mplayer issue. I've been working on my own mplayer GUI and I've found that it's control interface reports seriously bogus elapsed time and length information when playing VBR MP3 files.

As promised, I am posting this from my SLC 860 flashed with cacko 1.2.2. What a journey !!!!
Here are the steps I took to get here. I have a CF wifi card.
1. in the console run cardctl ident
Socket 0:
product info: "INTERSIL", "HFA384x/IEEE", "Version 01.02", ""
manfid: 0x0156, 0x0002
function: 6 (network)
2. edited /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf to have only the entry for my card.
device "hostap_cs"
class "hostap" module "hostap", "hostap_cs", "hostap_crypt_wep", "hostap_crypt_tkip"
card "Senao SL-2011CD/SL-2011CDPLUS"
version "INTERSIL", "HFA384x/IEEE", "Version 01.02", ""
# manfid 0x0156, 0x0002
bind "hostap_cs"
# Optional configuration parameters for hostap_cs.o
# module "hostap_cs" opts "channel=3 iw_mode=3 essid=test ignore_cis_vcc=0"module "hostap_cs" opts "dev_template=eth%d"
3. in the console restart pcmcia /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart
4. re-inserted wifi card in the CF slot.
5. create wifi network connection -
ESS-ID = ANY
Network type = Infrastructure.
Switch off autoconnect option.
6. connect and hey presto i'm in.
This has taken me hours of trial and error, searching & reading info and persistance. I found quite a few tips in the forum and the cacko FAQ page cacko faq (http://my-zaurs.narod.ru/cacko-faq.html).
enjoy and good night, dawn.

But, it looks like the hostap_cs.conf file only changes what is displayed on-screen, or I just don't know what's going on. I looked at the format and I deleted everything except the SMC 2642W (which was in there but had the "manfid" field commented out).
I'm going to have exactly this card soon for testing. After that I'll be able to either make it work and include an update in hotfix A or confirm that it doesn't work with hostap drivers meaning it won't be supported by Cacko ROM...
So, please, just wait a bit...
Of course - I am not holding my breath, The work you've done on these ROMs is amazing and has been a big boost to the community. I'm not trying to bug you :-)
The SMC 2642W card worked fine in Cacko 1.21 (+hotfixes) just before I upgraded... if you can't support it any more that's OK. I'll either upgrade by card or revert to 1.21, which was perfectly good really! I only wanted the new NetFront 3.1 with the cool extras because I'm reviewing the C3000 and I am getting jealous.
Regards
Ian.

Here is a "bug" to fix
If you / out before Qtopia starts and go to console, the screen will not scroll properly. When you get to the bottom of the screen, everything just writes over itself on the bottom line. Very annoying. You have to keep using the clear command to get back to the top of the screen, and forget reading multipage output.
I know that there is/was a kernel patch to fix scrolling so that you could watch the bootup notes if the SHARP logo screen was turned off. Is it possible that this same kernel patch is needed for a boot to console to scroll properly too?
(And while you are at it, if you just want to flip that little check box and turn off the SHARP logo screen that would be cool too. )
-
It seems Kino2 causes early suspends when running from battery, if left open.
Yes indeed, i'm having problems like this. Glad i'm not the only one. Weird shutdown/blankout problems. They do seem to happen more when Kino is open or has been run.
Qtopia has crashed three times since i updated, as well, and that's something that had only happened once previously. Sorry i can't give more specifics on what sets that off.
I also had a lockup when an alarm went off the other day while screen saver was on (and haven't yet figured out how that screen saver turned itself on randomly one day).

There is a small program called consolescroll (available on ZUG), which you need to run while in console and it will fix scrolling problem permanently.
Also, turning off sharp logo is not only a matter of a checkboox. There is a kernel build option, which needs to be se to enable messages on console, but unfortunately it's present in many places in kernel source, so it may cause a lot of compatibility problems...

Maslovsky et al.
The only couple of "issues" I've noticed and things that might need a bit of attention would be:
1). It would be nice to not have to specify an SSID when connecting to wireless networks. When I'm in local "hotspots", I obviously don't always know what they are. If we could get the "Any" function to work, that'd be great.
2). The only other "weirdness" I've noticed is that KINO doesn't seem to release the CPU when you exit it. The processor utilization stays pegged at 100% and will remain that way until the C-860 is rebooted. The other apps doesn't seem to have this effect. This may be false reporting of course, but it does appear quite consistent. Doesn't running the processor at max use up the battery power more quickly ?
That's about it for me. This thing is a work of art and the fact that these things are all I can come up with is testament to the success of all the hard work you and the other contributors have done on our behalf. Thanks again !
-
After playing with this release some more Kino2 seems to be the biggest "issue" for me as well. Sometimes it dies but leaves mplayer running so to re-start Kino2 you have to first kill the mplayer using kill command with pid. Also, Kino2 sometimes aggresively takes over the machine - it seems to once in a while use a lot of cpu and also once it is running it tends to take over the keyboard. For example, after I start Kino2 and right after that I start Opera (and have Opera in the foreground) Kino2 keystrokes still take precedent over Opera (not always, and this happens regardless of how I set the Kino2 keyboard shortcuts in preferences - I even tried to set them all to 'None' but I'm not convinced that this always works either).
Other than Kino2 issues for me this is a perfect rom (only improvement will be stripped down version that is appartently under development).
Thanks for great work.
-
the most critical fix for me would be the battery charging issue (on SL-C860).
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=61670\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
In the meantime I have to revoke my concerns about the battery charging. My SL-C860 is charging now without problems. LED is properly powered off. Maybe my device was too new at the beginning.

You can just edit the Zcomax entry....
OK... originally I posted here becase my card didn't seem to work at all, but after reviewing all the posts I realised that I could probably make it work, even if the name was wrong...
So today I did two things:
First I made a small donation to Maslovsky (to ensure good karma), and then I tried cycling through all the settings and "hey presto!", I found some which work. They do look exactly like the ones I had before, so the donation must've helped
The SMC2642W card is still reported as a "Zcomaz XI-325h 200mW" but I don't really mind about that, as long as I'm online again. Here are the settings just in case they're non-standard:
Specific ESS-ID selected
ESS-ID = SMC (...of course this will be different for yours)
Network Type = Infrastructure
WEP = 40-bit (64bit)
Hex entry for WEP Key1
Authentication: Open System
no other options set, IP and DNS automatic.
Anyway, it all works, Maslovsky rules and my Zaurus does everything I need it to again.
Thanks,
Ian.

any chance of a return for the infra-red applet??

A lot of apps that run in Magnified Screen mode are unusable because the exceed the physical screen size.
Tapping the check box does not toggle the state (box remains checked).
The bottom task bar exceeds the screen size so the Qtopia menu can not be clicked on.
In the case of SLapAss, even using the MENU key to get the Qtopia popup was useless since there was not even a ROTATE opition on the menus.
This is a major problem, IMHO, since it renders a number of apps effectively unusable. I've searched on the keywords but have not seen a post of these specific problems.
-
Just found another item that does not seem to come up in search.
The task bar memory app shows my Used memory as 14,805 kB but the Cache has grown to 36,810 kB in just a few hours leaving only 5,623 kB free.
System Info shows 15,759 - 37,203 & 4,173 kB respecively.
I have seen this happen with other varriants of the Sharp ROMs, but never this rapidly! Looks like a really major memory leak somewhere.
OK, I know that I can flush the cache by rebooting but that kludge is an inelegant PITA. How'za bout a util/app to clear or flush the cache?
TIA!!
-
The magnified screen issue is because the small versions of the icons haven't been included in the default install - there's a smallicons package in the feed to put these back in. Unfortunately not all the icons have small versions, and so this isn't nearly as good a solution as it needs to be.
The cache isn't a problem - it'll expand to fill up most of the free memory. But it'll also shrink back down as soon as some other process needs the space. If you get out-of-memory errors when the cache is still a significant size then there might be an issue, but I doubt that's the case here.
-

Hi !
I've installed Cacko 1.22 plus Japanese kernel, having previously never run with Cacko, preferring a hand-converted Sharp ROM. So I'm still in the process of familiarising myself with everything ...
Fist of all - thanks. You've clearly put a lot of effort into the ROM. Right, here are my observations so far :
Oddities with the screen going black and poor charging, already well reported.
Having switched Language to Japanese, jisho, Hancomsheet and others work fine with Japanese input but Hancom Word refuses to accept Japanese characters via the keyboard, it only works using the inputmethods. Not a major problem for me but might bother some people.
As an aside, it was mentioned in the Japanese kernel thread that you can use Japanese input without changing language by installing the unicode font. Can anyone report that this works ?
Some strangeness when changing the date/time. Using the up/down arrows or pressing on OK will sometimes bring up one of the Japanese input methods (JpnSymPad).
One bizarre incident that has only happened once - using "mv" in Konsole produced an error message along the lines of "file does not exist", when it clearly did. A reboot fixed that one.
A question rather than a bug - I tried to tighten up the sudoers file by giving access to only a few select programs, but this stopped suspend and reboot from working. There seems to be a reliance on using sudo for a lot of things, but the Sharp ROM doesn't need it. Why the difference ?
Right, I'll go and do some more playing.
Cheers
Ian

It probably makes mroe sence to report Japanese-related issue to the proper thread (Japanese kernel), so that people, who actualy use Japanese stuff can help you.

Most likely, the "Suspend-Resume architecture", which is inscluded in Cacko ROM depends on default configuration of sudo. You can contact tumnus regarding this architecture.
Also, note that some of the applications (in particular, bluetooth networking applets) also depend on sudo. They may work with non-default sudo settings, but this was never tested...
-
It seems to me that the battery level indicator is overly optimistic now, or it might just be a Kino2 issue. Three times now i have checked the battery icon while playing music (screen closed) and found it at well over half charge, only to have the whole thing die on me less than an hour later. Previously that level meant i had at least two more hours of music, plus some spreadsheet use before i had to worry about power.
All three times it was with the screen closed and kino2 running, and last night was extra-unusual in that i had to take out the battery for a moment, replace it, and then plug the Z in before i could get it to turn on. So it may be that kino2 pegs the processor at 100% at some point like someone else here observed, and drains off the battery suddenly because of it. I don't know how the lockup occurred, though.
Kino2 also stutters or freezes for a few moments at random points in music playback, a problem i never had with the previous ROM and players.
And in a completely unrelated note, i have a stupid question: what's the root password? I tried to switch to root to do some stuff, and couldn't get what i thought was the password on the previous ROM to work. Is everything intended to be done through sudo?
-
Thanks very much, pelrun. Getting the small icons now & watching the cache (still seems large to me, but no out of memory yet, so .... G).
-

I hadn't but it is downloading now & will get installed ASAP afterwards. Will let you know soonest how it works.
Thanks! With the Japanese support kernel, I may no longer have any good reasons to stay with the plain Sharp ROM!!
BTW - It would be nice (IMHO) if a tap on the time shown on the taskbar right end brought up the date info instead of sending the user directly to the settings page. Or possibly a setup option giving the user a choice. I often need to remind myself what the date is (old man's CRS disease, and all).
Great job!!
-
OK. I just installed small-icons v1.0.0-1
Using qpe-minesweep v1.5.0-1 for first example, The game board & squares at the different levels each appear more or less the same as those on C860 under plain Sharp. (side by side comparison)
The task bar icons, however, are still much wider & taller than they should be. They badly over lap one another and the bottom 1/2 or so of the entire row is cut off by the lower edge of the physical screen.
With qpe-mindbreaker v1.5.0-1, the game board itself has both bottom & right side scroll bars. The plain Sharp one does not. The task bar icons are again too large in both dimensions by far. There is also some problem as to which task bar icon responds to a click on the area of an adjacent icon.
SLapASS v1.0-1, in magnified display, starts about 1/2 way off the right side of the screen. The opening box has to be repositioned each time. Better than before, though, when it wouldn't even fit across the width of the screen.
If you click "Configure APs", the box is too wide for the screen no matter what you try. Fortunately, the problem with the Magnified screen check box not responding has gone away, so SLapASS can be run landscape without editing the *.desktop file directly.
Having the "top" command is really great, BTW!
You are aware that the ZUG URL on the boot screen needs to be changed, I hope.
Thanks again. I can live with the current state of magnified screen because I run all but a very few apps in landscape. But some are just too small to see & use without the magnified display.
Now if I can only figure out, without any docs, why SLapASS is spawning zombies right & left constantly ..... G!
-

Actually, what I had in mind on the taskbar clock applet was more like what Sharp v1.40 JP does. ie:
-
Sorry to say, but more strange behavior on the magnified screen - small taskbar icons front.
I decided to take a screen capture to post. Opened Mindbreaker in magnified screen. Got a white display followed by a very distorted but recognisable "boot time" 1 to 5 count down, in portrait mode, then the usual "tada" wave & the time - date settings page.
Tried launching Mindbreaker in magnified screen again. This time it opened properly except that the taskbar icons were back to the size that they had been before installing the small icons ipk.
Small icons showed on the Uninstall list. Uninstalled the package. This caused several tab icons, most noticably TreeExplorer + & TreeText, to change to an icon that I have never seen before. In *landscape* mode!
It totally pooched the display of Mindbreaker, as well. Looked like the component images went south somehow.
Since I had made NANDs at several points over the past few days, I went on & reinstalled the small icons ipk. This returned the above tab icons to their previous images & the Mindbreaker image components but failed to restore the smaller taskbar icons in magnified screen displays.
I took a snapshot anyhow. Attaching images no longer seems to place them in the message body & I don not have a URL where I can hang them as the "insert image" demands. But here is the JPG as attachment.
-
Man, you're probably starting to hate seeing my posts (G). But this one is easy.
At first I wasn't sure the screen capture (shift)+(Fn)+C was working. No "shutter" sound. Noticed that several wave files were AWOL from the sounds subdir.
I can understand dropping chime.wav & wave.wav since they are 110kB & 207kB. But shtr.wav is only 17kB. And it lets you know for sure that you've got the "shot".
Since I have pleanty of room still, I added all 5 back.
chime.wav 110k
shtr.wav 17k
surprise.wav 74k
wave.wav 207k
xylophone.wav 65k
Just for what its worth (G).
BTW - the cache routines are doing a much better job of returning free memory when required than the Sharp 1.31 or 1.40 versions. Sometime with the Sharp ones, I have to reboot in order to stop the yellow warning from showing even when only a few apps are running. After reboot, the cache is back to more reasonable size. I have not gotten a yellow warning yet with v1.22 despite sometimes having (IMHO) very little free memory. GOOD WORK, gang!!

Any chance of getting bunzip2 linked to bzip2?
It's not a major annoyance, but annoyance when I forget and type "bunzip" before I remember and have to go back and type "bzip2 -d".
Also there is a more up to date version of busybox (1.0) kicking around - although for some reason they haven't included mount support. Having a tar that recognised -j flag would be great.

No, that's a huuuuge pain in the butt. I've spent about two weeks trying to get busybox 1.0 into 1.22 ROM. It's totaly incompatible with many Sharp applications, including Package Manager. And once againm since we have no source code for them, there is no way to fix the problems. We're stuck with current bisybox.

Hmm, the version of busybox I've got on my Z now installs into Qtopia/bin and hasn't given me any problems with any of the sharp apps. Maybe it's because the original busybox is still present in /bin/ and the package manager is hard coded to call /bin/tar.
I'll try replacing the version I have with the one in /bin and get back to you with the results.
I'll also try contacting the author and see if mount can be put in to the 1.0 version

Be carefull, you can easily get your Zaurus into unbootable state by replacing busybox...
-
Stubear,
Once you get your the 1.00 version busybox booting make sure that you test all the Sharp apps thoroughly. We always thought that we had succeeded only to find a few problems with the Sharp apps. There are also a few applets that are in the 0.65 verison of busybox that are not available in the new version.
Good Luck!
-
To my opinion it's not really worth the efforts. If you need tar with -j option, I can simply create a ipk with standalone version of tar, which will install somewhere to /usr/local/bin and will not interfere with busybox's tar.
-
Well I'm using the ipk from here (http://tbox.jpn.org/wiki/linuzau/wiki.cgi?LinuxZaurus%b8%fe%a4%b1%a5%d3%a5%eb%a5%c9%2fBusyBox) and everything seems fine at the moment. I can install and remove packages using ipkg and qinstall. Mount has been moved to sbusybox so I had to make a new symlink, but it rebooted fine (although there were some errors about /etc/mtab being readonly).
The main reason I want the later version of busybox is to get rid of tar, bzip, zip etc and use busybox for them all - saving space on the filesystem so I can put other things there.
The current version has the following modules available
[, ar, arping, awk, basename, bunzip2, busybox, bzcat, cal, cat,
chgrp, chmod, chown, chroot, chvt, clear, cmp, cp, cpio, crond,
cut, date, dc, dd, deallocvt, df, dirname, dmesg, dos2unix, dpkg,
dpkg-deb, du, dumpkmap, echo, egrep, env, expr, false, fbset,
fdflush, fdisk, fgrep, find, fold, free, freeramdisk, fsck.minix,
ftpget, ftpput, getopt, grep, gunzip, gzip, head, hexdump, hostid,
hostname, hwclock, id, ifconfig, insmod, install, ip, ipaddr,

Which means I don't have to install seperate ipks for strings, traceroute, tar, zip, gzip, top, bzip, fdisk - yeah I know that many of these are already installed on Cacko but they are seperate programs that are taking space I could use for storing other things like dictionary files and games.
I'll get back to you after I've given the new busybox a workout nad tested all the Sharp apps.
By the way could you include dawg (in /home/QtPalmtop/etc/dict/ so that the handwriting app has word completion/lookup - it makes using it so much faster. If you don't have the file I can upload it - it's available in the opie-i18n-eng ipk from memory. I assume that other language version would work too but have only tried English.

Most of the busybox versions of the apps you have are missing many features. The features for tar, sed, awk, grep, and find to name a few are missing most of the functionality of the regular GNU versions of those apps. You will end up using more space once you have the same amount of functionality + some of the new busybox features. So, if saving space is your motivation I don't see the pay off.

Are you sure you indeed replaced original busybox? How did you install new one? The only way you can actualy replace busybox in ROM is to remount root partition as writable and replace busybox binary in /bin. The try to reboot and install some packages via Package Manager.
Unless you have replaced busybox in /bin, your system doesn't use it. And you don't save any space...
Finally you can calculate how much space you save by replacing some of the full featured apps with creapy busybox versions and I'm sure you won't even get to a 1 Mb...

That's part of the testing procedure - finding out what the busybox version is missing. If it's missing something that I think is important then I agree that it's not worth it. I.e although tar has the -j flag to allow inline bzip2 usage, it seems to be lacking the -p flag to keep permissions.
There may not be much space saving in the ned, but a lot of it is just the fun of playing with my Z and seeing what it is I can/can't change

Yep, sure I've replaced the original busybox.
Installed the ipk, which installs busybox to /home/QtPalmtop/bin and creates a few symlinks.
Remount / rw - mount -o remount,rw /
Cd to /bin and mv busybox busybox.orig and mv sbusybox sbusybox.orig
cp /home/QtPamltop/bin/busybox /bin/busybox
cp /home/QtPalmtop/bin/sbusybox /bin/sbusybox
rm mount umount
ln -s sbusybox mount and ln -s sbusybox umount
Remount / ro - mount -o remount,ro /
Test a few things in konsole and then get brave enough to reboot
Warning - Do not try this without having a backup. You can make you Z unbootable I know I did it with the last version before I noticed mount was in sbusybox instead of busybox
Yeah, I probably won't save a lot of space, but then if I didn't try I wouldn't be having fun. And I might just learn something useful too. Although I do see you point about stability and compatability in the Cacko rom - if it wasn't this stable then I wouldn't be brave enough to play.

It's the second time now that Cacko fucks itself: it suddenly stops responding, and rebooting it litteraly takes *hours* (I had to let it sit overnight).
I don't know what causes it, which is what's turning me crazy.
How can I provide you guys with feedback next time it happens? I don't really have much of anything else installed: KDEPIM/PI suite, qpe-filemanager, qpe-alarmclock, that's about it (that runs permanaently, anyway).

I had a similar issue and discovered that my SD card information was corrupted.
After re-format the SD card every returned to normal.

I totaly agree - that's the main motivation
