I just got my 5600 and I was looking around and noticed that doom can be installed with pbdoom. Can it be put on the 5600 or does it need to be on the CXXX versions?
Thanks in advance.
-
I tried it. It worked, but has a few problems:
1) The display was rotated, which made it very hard to control.
2) SDL has some bugs. If you accidently hit the home key or the application keys, the display doesn\'t switch properly. What happens is, the program is still being displayed, but no longer has input focus.
I\'d say its an impressive demo, but not really playable.
-
what about quake on the 5600? has anyone gotten that working?
-
it works, but toooooooo slow, even with the overclock kernel.
-
t works, but toooooooo slow, even with the overclock kernel.
That\'s strange. It works fine on my 5500.
Where did you put the wad files? try putinng them on your fastest memory(internal), second best is cf/nicrodrive. Most sd memory is too slow for doom.
Peter.
-
I think weili1977 was talking about Quake, which was never optimised for the Zaurus and no one has picked the project up.
Doom plays fine on the 5600 with or without overclocking. The SDL bugs are gone with the latest 1.2.6cvs version of SDL.
-

I also tried quake and it was too slow to be playable on my 860.
Doom worked, but I still haven\'t figured out all the keys yet. The main keys I haven\'t figured out are the ones used to set your key mapping. I guess the ESC key is the main one.
-
I think weili1977 was talking about Quake
Indeed. I can see that now. I was going by the thread title \"new5600 and doom\".
As far as Quake goes, I had a play with it intrerestingly enough it ran faster at 640*480 on my c760 than it did at 320*240.
It still wasn\'t playable as there were hardly any polygons being rendered.
This must mean that the software detects the speed of the cpu somewhat, and tries to compensate by dropping the detail level.

Doom worked, but I still haven\'t figured out all the keys yet
On the cxx0 in doom,
Press the cancel key.
Scroll down to \"options\" using the downarrow and press space.
Down one again for \"setup\" press space.
Down one more for \"key bindings\" press space.
You can now define your own keys for playing the game.
It does depend on which libsdl you are using, I use the 1.2.5 version from a japanese site. The 1.2.6 version ran Doom upside down on the cacko rom.

I can\'t get my PrBoom working. First I installed the SDL library ( libSDL_1.2.6cvs-1_arm.ipk ) from:
http://www.gnurou.org/software/zaurus/ (http://www.gnurou.org/software/zaurus/)
Then I installed PrBoom ( prboom_2.2.3-2_arm.ipk ) from:
http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=333 (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=333)
Then I installed the Doom Demo (Is this the WAD?) ( doomdemo_1.8-1_arm.ipk ) from:
http://de.geocities.com/apillath/ZaurusDoom.html (http://de.geocities.com/apillath/ZaurusDoom.html)
A PrBoom (Doom) icon appears under \"Games\". When I open it, it waits for a while, switches to 240x320 mode (I\'m on SL-C860) with \"Please wait...\". A few seconds later, it switches to 320x240 (landscape mode) and says \"Please wait...\", and then it exits. ...but the PrBoom icon still shows the explosion graphic that QTopia places over an icon what that application is loading. (There isn\'t any hour glass).
I\'m guessing the PrBoom crashed? Am I using the right files? What am I missing?
Thanks in advance!
-
I figured it out... I was missing 2 additional SQL libraries:
libSDL-mixer_1.2.5cvs-1_arm.ipk
libSDL-net_1.2.5cvs-1_arm.ipk
both found at:
http://www.gnurou.org/software/zaurus/ (http://www.gnurou.org/software/zaurus/)

hmm I have quake runing fine on my 860 with the cacko rom. not a problem
except that I cant seem to get an esc key working with out quiting.

So could someone compile a list of what needs to be downloaded and installed in what order? This could be very usefull
-
http://de.geocities.com/apillath/ZaurusDoom.html (http://de.geocities.com/apillath/ZaurusDoom.html)
install:
libSDL-mixer
libSDL-net
libSDL
prboom
doomdemo
Warning: you need about 10MB of free space !
The first 3 items are needed libraries (although mine seems to work just fine without the libSDL-net library... but maybe that is needed for network gaming. The prboom is the actual doom engine. doomdemo is the \"WAD\" (did I get that right?) file which defines the actual game. There are a number of free WAD files out there, including a huge one called \"FreeDoom\". Each WAD file you install will create a new icon under your \"game\" tab.
Once you install all of the needed libraries, the game plays right away... although it\'s qwerky because of the key mapping, the game orientation makes it upsidedown for the SL-Cxx0\'s. I played it for hours laft night... it\'s fun!
Let me know if that works.

By the way... does anyone know how to jump in DOOM? There\'s a nice armor I found in a cubby hole but I need to jump up to reach it.
-
I managed to get freedoom working in my 5600. But (this is LAME) I can\'t get out of the starting room in the first level. Any pointers? Also does anyone know where I can get the other wad files of Doom?
Thanks
-
LOL, people don\'t know how to play doom any more. Am I really that old? And, you can not jump in doom, look for a switch that will allow you to get to things.
-
Of course you are not old. But it is true, I have played very little Doom in my PC. At the start of the game, if I remember correctly, the door used to open if you went and stood in front of it (maybe you had to press \'space\'). In Freedoom, however, I can\'t see any door at all, leave alone open it. Could someone please tell me how to get out of the room?
Thanks
-
Press the BS/Del button. That\'s the button to \"use/click\" stuff. You an also change the keyboard mapping by pressing \"Fn\" (I think).
...but I still don\'t know how to jump. Can you jump in Doom?
-
Oh... I forgot to mention... go to the door (so you\'re right up next to it), then press BS/Del. It took me a while to figure that out too...
-
Thanks Mr Olsen
But I still can\'t see the door!
I start in an empty room and see an EXIT sign in front. Below that on the wall there are rows of buttons. I go up to the buttons and press BS. Nothing happens. Behind me is a recessed wall eith a diagram. Where is the door?
Thanks
-
The door is on the side with the Exit sign. There should be 2 buttons: a red one (which is lit) and a green one (which is darker / not lit). You have to be touching the wall at that point for the BS to work.
It is possible that your keyboard is mapped differently. Did you try pressing your FN button to see if the kayboard mapping appears?
-
Thanks for the info. I\'ll try it & let you know if it worked.
-
It worked. Thanks man.
You rock
-
I cant find the door you guys are talking about. There is a door with a dead marine in front. Cant open that. There is another white door beside the pool with the dead monster. How do I open these doors? I am using the shareware version.
Thanks.
-
I dont seem to have midi music working either. Is it included in Prboom?
-
ToneOlsen : doom doesn\'t have a jump key
-
ToneOlsen : doom doesn\'t have a jump key
Thanks! I\'m glad someone remembered to answer that question
...so, how do you get to the armor in the room with the 4 square pillor with the fire balls throwing snake-man creatures?

Different doors require different keys. A door with a partcular color around it needs a key of the same color. It\'s a big treasure hunt to find the combinations of locations to find the various keys to progress to various doors in the game. It isn\'t much like the new Quake games where thinking isn\'t needed as much as a fast firing button
I dont seem to have midi music working either. Is it included in Prboom?
I don\'t have music on mine...
-
Hold on a sec... are you refering to the 3rd level? (The 1st is a simple door... no creatures. The 2nd floor has lots of creatures and secret doors. And the 3rd level is some doors... no secrets or creatures (or maybe only a few creatures)... but no colored doors or keys...)
I can\'t find the path beyond the 3rd level either...
-
I am just on the first level, as soon as I start the game. Cant get past the doors. There is no colored key.
-
For anyone interested, I got the midi working with prboom.
1. Download the timidity midi patch from http://www.linet.gr.jp/~tamuki/timidity/ea...required.tar.gz (http://www.linet.gr.jp/~tamuki/timidity/eawplus/guspat-20000706-required.tar.gz)
2. Install it on your SD card since it takes a lot of space. I put it in /mnt/card/Documents/timidity
3. Edit the timidity.cfg so it points to current dir
4. Create a symlink from usr/local/lib/timidity
ln -sf ln -sf /mnt/card/Documents/timidity /usr/local/lib/timidity
Now...If only I could get through the door.
-
There\'s a dead soldier on the floor in front of the door? Maybe you\'re palying a different map than me.
In mine (from memory) the first level was 1 room. There are 4 walls: A computer graph terminal screen/wall, a blank wall, a latch door (with a green and red button), and another blank wall. You go up to the green and red button (the red one should be currently lit), and the press the \"use\" key (whichever it is... it depends on your perosnal keyboard mapping). On mine I think it was the space. You can tell if your using the right key because if you\'re in front of a wall, and you press it, the guy grunts (because he\'s pushing the wall).
-
Definitely a different map. I installed the prboom package and the doom1 demo ipk. What package did you install?
-
Freedoom. Its great!
-
Would some one be willing to send me the library files needed, as the links are down/gone? Any one? I would appreciate it, I want to try DOOM on my Zaurus
SL 5600 Special Kernel 1.3
256 PNY CF
-
these files by the way
libSDL-mixer
libSDL-net
libSDL
thanks again,
TJ

...but I still don\'t know how to jump. Can you jump in Doom?
.......i.........uh......omfg..........speechless
I guess i thought if you were wise enough to choose a linux pda then certainly you had played doom before.....
Apparantly i was very wrong.
I just cant get over that........
jumping in doom......lol....yes the jump key is right next to the antialiasing and hardware shader control button.
-
I thought you couldn\'t jump in Doom?
-
Hey, wizzard, your cat keeps mooning me! ...it isn\'t a pretty sight!
-
yes the jump key is right next to the antialiasing and hardware shader control button
I thought you couldn\'t jump in Doom?
I think he is joking. As far as I know there isn\'t an antialiasing and hardware shader control button. \"Jump\" wasn\'t one of the keys DOOM let me map in the setup screen, so I assume it doesn\'t have it.
I played Quake, and I think I was confusing some of Quake\'s abilities with Doom... i.e. jumping...
So... how do you get the shield vest on level 2 (the 1st level, of course, being just the door), behind the secret wall just off the floor? (In FreeDoom)
-
Hey, wizzard, your cat keeps mooning me! ...it isn\'t a pretty sight!
I thought that they hated it only in the south.
Guess Iowa \'s geddin\' dere (simulated southern drawl)
So how abaht geddin\' mah avvyturrs sorry a** off da forrum? (even more pronounced simulated southern drawl)
How \'bout a poll?
Actually want a more suitable avatar but haven\'t got around creating one yet.
The above stastements are not aimed at hurting anyone\'s emotions/beliefs etc. etc. yadda yadda yadda.......
So I apologise in advance.
LOL
-
I thought that they hated it only in the south.
What does north and south have to do with not wanting to look at a cat\'s anus? Are people in the \"north\" more likely to subject their cats to this kind of thing on a regular basis... whereas people in the \"south\" find something disturbing about it? Sorry.. you lost me.
...but that was an impressive suthern\' drawl\'
-
In deference to TonyOlsen\'s, sensibilities, I\'ve changed my avatar.
-
Try prdoom from zports.sf.net ?
I remember i installed it a while back worked fine (dont remember about the keys thought). And Quake was way too slow. I know mteira compiled doom recently on zports for the c7x0. I don\'t know how good it is on a 5600 thought.

[Edited out]
Doom is still great. If only I could find a way to get that armour in level 2.........
-
Has anyone managed to get it to play right side up in landscape...if so, how?
-
Which zaurus do you have?
With my zaurus 5600, I had to use a special libsdl version that has qt rotation of 2.

Which zaurus do you have?

Where did you get this special version? I am trying to run Exult on my C860 and it's upside down no matter what LibSDL I try. I've tried the script file with SDL_QT_ROTATION=1 and also tried that in my environment profile with no joy. I can see lots of Rotation variables listed in the console output when I run Exult from the console, but I have no idea how to access them.
-
Its on my website link on the bottom of this message.
-
OOps. it might not work for you at all. I had qt rotation set to 2 if the machine detected is a 5600.
It might behave like the other libsdl's if it doesn't think its running in a 5600.
The C860 is supported though as I can see in the source.
