Sorry for the very crude release - http://212.10.30.205/rc10/ (http://212.10.30.205/rc10/)
Feeds are located in the folders - excuse the mess :-)
Update C1000 version is out
.. with USB Host working and pre. gfx accel. Calibration screen is portrait mode. To enable mouse support edit startx and add "-mouse /dev/input/mouse0" in xserver args. Resizing of partions doesn't work yet.
As always visit our site for banners and donations - new website is almost done and will be "released" soon ;-) We are still working on the latest new stuff for the website - if you look "hard" you will probally find it anyway..
But please, please, please consider donating - we are very low on cash always and we still haven't got a C3000 - althoug we have a C1000 due to kind hardware donation - so expect a C1000 version soon - although hardware accelerated will be a while..

I noted the same, simple work-around until it is fixed is to use the X-virtual keyboard for special characters & Fn keys.

Hi,
On my C700, "Suspend" menu doesn't work anymore.
And although my wifi card (Linksys WCF12) is connected to my router (Inventel DW200), Gaim is unable to connect and Dillo exits when i type "www.google.fr" and then "enter"...
Did i forget something ?
Thanks.

Hi ,
Networking via samba is not working anymore on RC10 . I flashed back to RC9 , installed samba and it is working.
thanks,

How do you start a gui other than twm?
sl-6000
-
I flashed to pdaX on my 6k briefly.
fn keys don't seem to work at least "=" didn't work. You already knew the keymap was imperfect, though.
The partition resizing is a problem. there isn't really enough room for a decent installation
on the default partitioning scheme.
I really don't like twm. reminds of when I screw stuff up on my desktop
that's a quibble, though.
I think I will have to go backup my pocketworkstaion to free up my sd card, put the feed on a cf card and give this another shot.
keep at it-- I've seen pdaX on a 760, and was really impressed. would love to see equal functionality on my 6k
-
?!
very strange. I had loaded pdaX over sharp..and got a really basic emergency looking desktop..restored to guylhem rom.... then flashed to pdaX and got a beautiful gui. I wouldn't have thought that would happen at all. I wonder what my partitions look like...
I need to go figure out the wireless if I can.
It would be nice, though, if the apps obeyed the window manager in portrait rotation. a landscape aterm in a portrait disply isn't really necessary, is it?
really #$$!!!ing nice, guys,
Thanks!

You seem to have gotten farther than I did. I also loaded rc10 on my 6k tonight. I answered "y" when the installer asked be if I wanted to format the user flash. As a result, root had no home dir and no .xinitrc. Since the default system xinitrc is the one that has shipped with X at least as far back as X11R5, (R4 had 'awm' I think) that brought up twm as the default window manager. I managed to get focus on an xterm, and from there about all I could do was type 'reboot.' I couldn't do anything else because the pointer calibration was all messed up. The X axis was reversed, and the Y axis was non-functional until I had the stylus about 3/4 of the way to the bottom, when it would start rising off the very bottom of the screen It got maybe a third of the way up as I brought the stylus all the way to the bottom. So it's reversed to, but there's more to it than that. As reported here by others, I couldn't use the FN shifted keys, so I couldn't type some important characters like '-'. (Try going without that at a Unix command line. 8) Since I couldn't reach the window menu because of the pointer issue and I couldn't 'kill -' anything, rebooting was the best way out.
When I logged back in, I looked through /etc/X11 for a more suitable xinitrc, and found /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.openbox. This I copied to ~root/.xinitrc. When I typed 'startx' I got a much more reasonable starting desktop, with an xterm taking up about 2/3 of the screen, and with a piece of the desktop available. However the pointer was still screwed up. The calibration ran on both startx attempts.
That's all for tonight. I look forward to further testing.

you could repeat what i did.. weird though it seems... do a restore on guylhem's image.. boot to it, shutdown and install rc10. I expected that to have problems... as it turned out my problems came right after a fresh factory restore...
-
can unstable-feed still be used in RC10?
-
I did what adf did, really nice looking! Now we need to figure out how to start up the wireless....

It's the partitioning. With the default split, pdaXrom fills up the "read only" partition. If you load the guylhem rom first, it converts the flash partitioning to a single writeable root. This allows the pdaXrom install to complete correctly.
It looks as though pdaXrom will have to distribute either a smaller image or a NAND flash image for the 6000L
My vote is for the latter.
On a cheerier note, let me second what others have said in this thread. This ROM is beautiful!
-
This is GREAT. It looks good and feels (subjective I know) to be faster.
512MB SD card came today so I'm well happy.
-
Are we sure we HAVE to use wlan-ng? I mean, if we can get the prism2 drivers to load, maybe hostap can be used?
I guess first is getting the prism2 module to load.
I put the feed on my cf in the meantime so I could see how the apps work
really really nice!
good quick office apps (full blown, too) and 3 browser options.
-
Hi Laze,
I saw that you have packages for kde in the feed.
I thought I was the only one to be crazy enough to try it.
Is it usable?
Christoph

You can also try to use the tools in the installer to resize the root partition.

6000L WiFi Works!
Several things were key in getting this to work.- Follow the instructions at ftp://ftp.linux-wlan.org/pub/linux-wlan-ng/README (http://ftp://ftp.linux-wlan.org/pub/linux-wlan-ng/README) exactly as far as editing the files in /etc/wlan. Don't mess with pcmcia or hotplug.
- /etc/rc.d/init.d/wlan start
- dhcpcd wlan0
- Don't use vi, either in console or X11 mode!
It's really busybox, and it has terrible trouble with wrapped lines. The fact that the 6000L is in portrait mode makes this more likely to be a problem. Use SciTE in X11 mode (in the Office group)
Here's a relevant (censored) section from my /etc/wlan/wlancfg-mySSID, implementing 128 bit WEP:
#=======WEP===========================================
# [Dis/En]able WEP. Settings only matter if PrivacyInvoked is true
lnxreq_hostWEPEncrypt=true # true|false
lnxreq_hostWEPDecrypt=true # true|false
dot11PrivacyInvoked=true # true|false
dot11WEPDefaultKeyID=0 # 0|1|2|3
t11ExcludeUnencrypted=true # true|false, in AP this means WEP is required.
# If PRIV_GENSTR is not empty, use PRIV_GENTSTR to generate
# keys (just a convenience)
# add-ons/ in the tarball contains other key generators.
PRIV_GENERATOR=/sbin/nwepgen # nwepgen, Neesus compatible
PRIV_KEY128=true # keylength to generate
PRIV_GENSTR=""
# or set them explicitly. Set genstr or keys, not both.

Obsessed, you mean?
I'm obsessive about gadgets and systems software. The Zaurii bring out the best (?) in me.
-
hey laze --
you said replacement (new) ipks to fix the fn key thing -- does that mean that they
are up? or are you going to post with their names and when they are up, etc.
Scott
-
hbo,
Thanks a ton! This got me online and in via ssh to my Z!
A couple small corrections to your instructions:
/etc/init.d/wlan start
should be
/etc/rc.d/init.d/wlan start
and
Here's a relevant (censored) section from my /etc/wlan/wlan-cfg-[i]mySSID[/i], implementing 128 bit WEP:
Should be
/etc/wlan/wlancfg-mySSID
No dash after wlan and before cfg in that filename. But those two filenames are in the README, so anyone following the directions should catch those two differences.
Well done!
-
Thanks for the corrections! I've updated the text accordingly. I also removed the 'modprobe prism2_usb' step. A subsequent reboot showed that it wasn't needed.

After I got pdaXrom installed on top of a single flash partition, my problems with the FN key went away. I'm sure that a corrected .xmodmaprc is dropped into ~root if the installer doesn't run out of room first. Try NAND flashing the guylhem ROM, then updating to pdaXrom. That will repartition your flash so pdaXrom can install correctly. Be sure to do a NAND backup beforehand so you can return to the standard ROM!
laze: how do you get the pipe (vertical bar) symbol? Other ROMs map this either to shift-space or fn-space.
And it seems as though the NAND tools really need to work for the 6K!

It's working under X11 (fn-space = |), just not on the text console.

pdaXrom newbie tip (for those who, like me, do NOT rtfm.)
In X11, the calendar button is the control key.
-
Hey everybody.. so for the slow response time.. Glad to see you figured out the wireless stuff yourself :-) I was going to post it.
Current big bugs:
1. There is a flash/ram size problem with the Sl6000 - sometimes it can be fixed be resizing or nand flashing roms like guyhelm rom etc.
2. The files to fix the FN input bugs and more on the clamshell models are still not online due to extreme downloads from russia - please be patient for some a while.. I will post when you should do a update.
-
quick comment
using guylhem rom seems pretty repeatable. I've done it twice (kdebase, kbepim and kde libs so NOT fit on internal )
-
Another issue.
If you don't "wake up" your Zaurus before taking it off the cradle, the idle timer is still active, and if you are over the idle time for your battery configuration, it will immediately go into suspend.
Solution for now:
Tap the screen or hit a key on the Z to wake it up right before you pick it up.
Long term solution:
Zero out the idle timer when it goes from AC->Battery mode, maybe?
-
Gondola - we will look into it.
SL6000 problems will be checked tomorrow for better testing :-) Basically the SL6000 seems more unstable than we tought..
The clamshell related problems should be fixed - from a clean console/bash (no window manager running) do a ipkg update and then a ipkg upgrade. Make sure you have it setup you ipkg feed to the new location(http://212.10.30.205/rc10/Zaurus-7x0-860/feed/) and you have a working internet connection when doing the upgrade.
Can anyone confirm the samba network problems reported earlier?
Also the problems with suspending from menu - anyone still having this?
Regarding some of the comments about programs starting in too big sizes.. There is no good work around this at the moment. Although i had thought about changing all the programs so they are called with the geometry parameteres of the current screen. That way almost all programs would start maximized - any better ideas etc?

Nice to see so many liking our rom and making complete downloads of our feeds but please consider donating or at least looking at the banners on pdaxrom.org site.

on opening apps.. if you do this, will there be a pager? 3-4 fullscreen apps on top of each other w/ no way to shuffle between 'em would be pretty frustrating. Then again, maybe there is an obvious thing that I've overlooked

Alt + Tab will toggle between open apps. You can also install an alternate WM like fvwm and create a pager Also you can open apps on seperate desktops and Ctrl+Alt+ right or left arrow will move you between them.
Cheers,
Jerry

I donated right after I got wireless working.
Does the 'Donat-o-Meter' ever change?

Yes... Will updated it now - btw. the files updated for the corgi fix is the matchbox-pdaxrom* file.

you can add the task manager applet to the panel. (via right click on the bar or via the menu)
-
both good solutions. thanks
incidentally.. after flashing fro guylhem-rom, because it only makes one (2 really, but one is the loader stuff) partition there is no mtblck3 and hence nothing at /home. I guess no surprise there, just thought i'd mention it

This is crazy
After a quick install on my C750 the mouse cursor behaves rather nervous. For instance, I wasn't able to select anything from a dropdown list by tapping and holding the stylus on the scrollbar. The effect was that the mouse cursor jumped all around the position pointed.
I reinstalled RC9 and everything is OK again. Am I the only one having this problem?
If so, I will have to retry I guess (maybe I will anyway).

No, my mouse cursor has been well behaved so far..
However, I'm not able to remap the Short cut keys or the Silkscreen buttons with the Input Setup applet. Anyone else having this problem? Remapping Ctrl & Alt did work.

VisualBoyadvance can't work in RC10!
it needs libqpe.so

Another issue with rc10:
When I start X, I get the following messages that I can only see after shutting down X again:

There is some know jerkyness with the screen at the moment.
Also we are still looking into the many reported problems with the SL6000

Like Badog said, the libqpe.so is missing.
Can we download it somewhere ?
RC10 is running fine, even xfce4 runs well
(except that shift is a bad replacement for Fn
as right mouseklick, but thats xfce )
...and i have now a whole free weekend for getting
my serial Bus Bluetooth-Card working...

can the unstable feed be used? on a 6k? specifically I'm looking for vnc (tightvnc if possible).
-
I installed rc10 on my C860 tonight, just to see what it looked like in it's intended environment.
WOW
I so much wish Sharp would make a Z with the clamshell form factor and the display from the 6K. It's the only thing that spoils my enjoyment of this wonderful work of art of a ROM, in all its landscape-mode glory.
Good job!

surely it can be tweaked for the 6k. a lot of stuf is simple.. like opening windows full screen.. and rotating
couter-clockwise --getting those changes into a releae shouldn't be too hard..or doing them ourselves seems a not-too-bad worst case. you might also consider using a wm that handles portrait better (?), icewm seems to do a good job on other setups
How do you zoom on a 6k?

I haven't given up on the 6000 and this ROM. I think you're right that adapting it to portrait mode will just be a series of tweaks. As I said, I just wanted to see it in its "native" environment. Also, my 6K is bouncing between the Sharp ROM (which is the only place I have PW working well), the Guylhem ROM and this guy. It's sort of like my cutting edge development box. The 860 was my standby reliable production box running CACkO 1.22a. But I just couldn't resist giving this ROM an extended tryout. So the 860 is now like my semi-stable QA box. I have no production Zaurus, so it's a good thing all my PIM data is on my Treo. Actually, this is NOT a good thing.
-
lmao.
I'm new to pdax... but the stuff that "just works" is marvellous on this setup.
I installed firefox, and vlc. got the urge to see if shoutcast would work....and bingo- I pick vlc to open the file and I getv streaming music. no problem. VERY nice
I also see siag in the feed ! bravo. it is missing a lib on my 6k though....and 8 hesitate to mix feeds on a rom I don't quite understand. sugesstions onfeeds..siag..vnc?
-
@adf I believe that except some pakcages which might include some different configuration (for instance X) all the applications are the same for 6000 and SL-C model...so yes the unstable feed can be used.
see some feeds here: https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7513 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7513).
I thought siag was dropped...what lib is missing (often for a lib xxx look for a libxxx.ipk or xxx.ipk , without the lib in front)
Note the feed here http://www.pdaxrom.org/ipk_feed.php (http://www.pdaxrom.org/ipk_feed.php) is the 1.05 feed and wasn't compile with softlfloat and the ipk there might not work.
(basically all apps for RC5+ should work) the official feed is http://212.10.30.205/rc10/Zaurus-SL6000/feed/ (http://212.10.30.205/rc10/Zaurus-SL6000/feed/)

I had a lockup on my 860 just now. Unfortunately, I hadn't yet set up ssh with my key, so I couldn't log in to the machine to troubleshoot or recover. I had jjust finished dumping a tarball of the SD card over the wireless when the lockup occurred. The pointer still tracks the stylus, but otherwise the interface is completely unresponsive.
[addendum]
The backlight dims and the power icon in the task bar changes when I switch to battery power, so something is alive in there.
-
pgas- thanks.
missing libMowitz.so.0
I'll check the other feeds.
why was siag dropped btw? I had high hopes for it...

ipkg is a shell script which calls grep:
# grep -c grep `which ipkg`
11
grep in my case comes from the grep ipkg:
# ls -l `which grep`
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 55 May 20 22:57 /opt/native/arm/3.3.6-xscale-softvfp/bin/grep -> /mnt/card//opt/native/arm/3.3.6-xscale-softvfp/bin/grep
And that executable depends on one of the missing aliases for libpcre.so:
# ldd `which grep`
libpcre.so.0 => /mnt/card/usr/lib/libpcre.so.0 (0x40026000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40039000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)
Sooo, I added /mnt/card/usr/lib (and /mnt/card/usr/local/lib) to /etc/ld.so.conf and ran ldconfig, which solved the problem with qpkg.

Another bug report
This may not be an rc10 issue, but it's a bug nonetheless. The base OS comes without the zoneinfo database. It's available in the feed as the "timezone" package. The database (as delivered by that package) is about 1.5 MB, so I guess I can understand leaving it out, although it's not a tradeoff I would have made. At any rate, the date and time applet doesn't let you change the timezone, whether or not the package is present! This is a bug in my book. If you expect an average user, even a Zaurus average user, to know to type 'ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/... /etc/localtime' then you will either weed out all the unskilled users, or hear them whine a lot.

Request for Enhancement
Since this release candidate (and maybe earlier releases) includes OpenSSH, it would be possible to run xinit from startx using the ssh-agent. That way, typing 'ssh-add' in any terminal would give any program launched by the desktop the ssh identity (via the user's ~/.ssh/id_*) that was added to the agent. And then we could brag to our friends that we were just as sophisticated and cool as SuSE and Red Hat. Wait... forget that part.
/usr/bin/ssh-agent xinit $client $clientargs -- $server $display $serverargs
-
Hbo thank your for very good and precise bug reports - we are looking into them now..
Btw. i agree with timezone problem i haven't still figured out and good and easy way to let the user select the timezone - will add it soon ;-)

I'm having this same problem. I'm forced to quit X completely before shutting the Zaurus off.

I've been experiencing lots of lock ups, mouse moves but rest of the GUI is unreponsive. Sshing in & killing x server fixes things. There was some correlation to umounting & mount my micro drive & wifi card. For a while I made sure to unmount before removing but lock ups continued. Lock ups also ocurred without removing the CF card. I hacked the /etc/apm file per DVDRW's post and number of lockups have decreased (sashz seemed to have a more elagant solution in the script, but without the sleep command). So far they only ocur with removing the wifi or CF card without unmounting the drive (using the applet). I haven't had any unassociated with mounting & unmounting. Anyone else having similar experience?

I'm continuing to have occasional lockups on my 860. I haven't discerned a pattern, but I'll keep your experiences in mind going forward.
As far as APM, I notice that when I switch to battery power after a long time on AC, if I haven't recently touched the machine, it hibernates immediately.
I've also had a repeat of symlinks to libraries on /mnt/card/usr/lib going away. I installed and played a game of Frozen Bubble. After a long interval, I rebooted the machine. Frozen Bubble wouldn't start after the reboot, complaining that perl couldn't find lib_SDL_something.so.2. Once again, the .so was linked under /usr/lib, but the extended names were not. This was a fresh reload so I could increase the size of the root partition, so I hadn't yet added the /mnt/card library paths to /etc/ld.so.conf. I did that and then ran ldconfig, which fixed the problem again. It sounds like either the symlinks were there after an install, or else the environment was providing a LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the frozen-bubble.sh script so that it worked fine. After the reboot, either the links or the environment went away.

I have, I hope, a simpler issue.
on my 6k If I plug in a usb kbd and mouse, I have to insmod path to usbmouse.o (kbd is just insmod). No biggie, but automation would be nice. the real issue is that the mouse lights up, but has no noticeable effect on anything-- doesn't control the pinter, etc.
How do I get my mouse to control the pointer? (tried hid.o, too btw) suggestions?

Thanks pgas, actually that's the hack that I'm currently using (the dvdrw hack I mentioned in my post). It has reduced the number & frequency of lockups. I used it in RC9.1 too, but was hoping it wasn't needed in RC10.

I've installed the above linked apm script, hopefully the lockups will stop..

Another bug I haven't been able to resolve. The /root/Choices/input.cfg doesn't seem to modify the Shortcut buttons or silk screen areas. I've run the input setup applet and checked to make sure the proper values are set. The proper keys show up in the applet drop down boxes. I'm guessing for some reason those re-mappings are not being read properly. Re-mapping the Ctrl Alt keys & the mouse buttons work fine.
Cheers,

popped in the xserver mouse settings in startx ..mouse works if i manually load the modules. I lose the pointer If i unplug the mouse, though...and of course if i use a startx script with the mouse settings in it and have no mouse attached or no modules loaded I have no pointer.
useable, but at some point it should be automated.and least on starting x, maybe checking for a mouse and loading the appropriate modules and options? (same w/ keyboard).
having x restart on plugging in a mouse might not be so nice

I'm giving this RC a lot of exercise. Something baaad happened that I just noticed. My 1GB SD suddenly (or at least I noticed it suddenly) lost most of /usr. The only thing left was /mnt/card/usr/lib/ipkg.. Running an fsck.ext2 on my 6K showed about 20 errors, and left me with most of the missing files under lost+found. I'm an IT professionial. I have certifications. The nice folks at the hospital gave me several, for instance. So naturally I had no backup.
The fact that the ipkg directory survived may indicate that it was that command that trashed the card. I did several 'ipkg remove' commands, switching between the gui and the command line, and between -d /mnt/card and not. So the bug is probably between my ears, or riding on a cosmic ray that is now passing the orbit of Jupiter after flipping several crucial bits on my SD card. But I still think it may have been bad behavior with the package manager and/or ipkg.
I have to feel that way. I have my professional pride to salvage, after all. 8)

Bug report
A sequel to the sad story above. After reloading rc10, reformatting my sd card, altering the base OS the way I like, layering on tons of software, performing a NAND backup while simultaneously making a tar backup if the newly loaded sd, all in a marathon session, I had X11 up, ready to start poking at all that software I loaded. But I noticed that the time was off. It looked like Greenwich time. "Odd," I thought, "I set the timezone before the backup." Sure enough, the clock was actually 17 hours slow, although that made it look 7 hours fast if you didn''t look to closely. (I didn't, so it looked to me like Greenwich, 7 hours ahead of PDT.) So, I typed 'ntpdate my.fave.ntpserver.com'. Wham! The screen went dark. "Oh no!" I tapped the screen, the backlight came back on My sigh of relief died in my throat as the system went in to hibernation. Hitting the on button brought me back to the desktop, but now it was frozen, like so many reports have it, after hibernating with a CF WiFi card.
Now for the bug.
The desktop wasn't frozen! X had died and left the display on VT2, which was an unresponsive, though pretty, piece of eye candy. (I herewith resist the temptation to compare it to my ex-wife. She wasn't that pretty.) Logging in with ssh and typing 'chvt 1' got the console back. I think it's a bug that there isn't some failsafe mechanism that does a chvt 1 if X dies, and there's no activity, or a login session, on any virtual terminal other than 1. Either that or the X server should scrawl "aaaagggh!" on the screen as it dies.
thank you for listening.

I had a similar experience with my /mnt/card/usr today. On a reboot it was just plain gone. Before doing anything else I rebooted, as I had this happen a couple times with RC9.1. After the 2nd reboot /mnt/card/usr was back & everything happy on my SD card.
@Laze: This input remapping failure happened after the ipkg upgrade (from console, no X running). I've both rebooted & restarted X server. I normally run the ROX Pinboard, but using the default Matchbox WM has the same result. When this first happend I though it might be due to left over files from RC9.1. I'm running with a single partition /=57 mb. So I did a NAND restore with original Sharp ROM, then installed RC10 again over that; resizing / back to 57 mb. Still having input remapping problem with shortcut buttons & silkscreen. Could it have anything to do with single / partition? (don't think so but....?)
Cheers,
Jerry

Thanks. I know about that one. In this case, it was the card that was corrupted. I've looked over the Cxx hardware forums and there are threads talking about sd cards having problems with large continuous writes. I have certainly been doing a lot of write to mine, lately. But this is the only failure I've seen, so I'm hoping it was an isolated problem. But the way I'm using the machine, if the problem isn;t rare, I'll probably run across it again sometine soon.

Are you sure the card was corrupt ?
I have had the same kind of problem several times. It seems all files are gone and there's no way of putting them back, but, a reboot does always fix the problem for me.
Are you using kde stuff ? I think that's the way to run across it again. Load a program that uses kde, suspend your Z, resume the next morning and you may have the lost-files problem again. It doesn't always happen, just sometimes. Short suspends don't seem to cause it.
I had the same problem when using KDE-apps through pocketworkstation and I already had it again using KDE-apps on RC10.
I read something about "eject-insert" of SD and CF cards on "resume". Maybe this causes the problem ? But why doesn't it always happen ?
Chero.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=81406\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Unfortunately, yes. I ran fsck on the card and it came up with 20 or so errors. Most of the files ended up intact and placed under lost+found. But the second-level directory structure was completely hosed. I could have tried to piece it back together from what had been salvaged, but that would have been error prone from a variety of angles. Since the data was 100% recoverable by reinstalling the software, I just reloaded the OS and apps. This time I have a backup!

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=81720\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Yeah buddy! 8)
The SDK is one of the best features in my opinion. It's really easy to port GTK[+12]* apps. The also have kdelibs from KDE 3.4 ported. I haven't tried to build anything them, yet.
You can find the native SDK in a .img file in the subdirectory for your Z (referenced in the first post in this thread.) If you put that .img in /home.root, it will be mounted by the startup scripts on boot, and the tools will be symlinked into /usr. I haven't tried cross compiling yet. It looks like their cross environment is not up-to-the minute. At least the version number is RC5 whereas we are at RC10. But I figure I can update with the libs from the native kit, and grab headers as needed from the various projects.
Laze: Does that sound like a viable approach? Are you going to update the cross SDK for RC10, or wait for a later release?
-
The cross SDK is comming anytime soon - but at moment we are busy trying to fix all the bugs.. The RC9 SDK should work.

There is quite a lot in the "rom" as shipped. However the root is writable, so deleting packages is perfectly possible. (Whether it's advisable is up to your judgement. 8)
I don't have a list of the base packages, since I've already loaded a ton of stuff on top.

Anybody figure out how to have more than one wireless setting?? I have my home network set up, and my work network set up. I have to manually change the settings in wlan.conf to work though. IE, I comment out the network I'm not at. I tried to set up wlan0, wlan1 but that doesn't work.
Oh, and anybody figure out how to get kismet to work?

Problem with SD
===========
My config: 750 with 1gb SD formatted as ext2/3 (happens in either filesystem), rc10
Occasionally the Z "loses" the sd card, expecially when installing packages or running kde. I've applied the sd-fix via ipgk upgrade from outside x, but it did not have any effect on this issue.
If this happens, /mnt/card appears unmounted, and a have to reboot to mount again (mount /mnt/card doesn't do the trick here).
Now the bad thing is: Most of the time, everything works ok after rebooting, but occasionally I lose some dirs on the card. ls -l doesn't list them and in mc I see them in red with a questionmark in front of the entry, e.g.:
/home
/lost+found
/opt
?usr
A fsck results in countless errors leaving me basically with the only option to reinstall the whole thing...
Any idea how to improve this is greatly appreciated!
If you need further details/logs/etc, just ask.
Take care
chris

KUDOS to the pdaxrom team for make this availible to SL-6000.
I have been playing with it for a week and, in my humble opinion, this is by far,
very very far, the best rom i have used.
For what i want from my Z (pretty be a mini linux laptop), it burries the sharp rom,
OZ, debian over QT ...
It is a LOT snapier and stable than debian (eg try firefox).
All the apps i tried so far work very well, and mostly out of the box, (firefox,
mplayer, xmms, abiword, kismet, quake, vncviewer ...)
Even the bluetooth stuff work great.
(I managed to use my cell phone as a bluetooth modem).
I have a couple questions:
Why is there some stuff in the feed, that, eventhough the .ipk file is there, the
package not appears in the "Packages" file? These "removed" packages are then not
availaible through the package manager.
adf - you seem to have gotten VLC running. I think i installed it successfully,
but does it have a gui? 'Cause when I launch with vlc or wxvlc from command line
I get the "remote interface initialized' then nothing. Using the VLC icon created on

I'd really like to be able to use shoutcast stream on my Z.

But this is very powerfull ROM.....
When i suspend all is well, but when i push the power button, the first time Zaurus power up and sudenly POWERDOW, the second time it works....
I noticed that after resume the clock is not at the right time but it shows a wrong time.....

What a fantastic ROM! I'm using a C1000 and have a couple of issues, however.
1. The right shift key doesn't work (won't capitalize or get symbols)
2. My ambicom wl-1100c connects to my ap (wep) without problems but I can't get it to work with kismet.
I've tried using the "hostap" driver as per the instructions I've seen on the forums but to no avail.

Hello,
Just wondering if someone could explain what's going on with the drivers in RC10 on the C1000 for wifi cards. I have both an ambicom wl1100c-cf and a linksys wcf12. Both cards are able to connect to wireless networks without any problems. I am trying to get kismet to work though and am thoroughly confused. I'm not sure what source line to use in kismet.conf. Looking at the /etc/pcmcia/hermes.conf file it looks like both cards should be using the orinoco_cs drivers. But there is no orinoco module anywhere. lsmod shows no orinoco_cs module, there's none under the /lib/modules directory, and when I insert my wifi cards I get errors in the /var/log/messages file about not being able to find the modules. But somehow the cards still manage to connect. Is the driver compiled into the kernel somehow? If so, which driver is it? Anyone care to explain? Thanks.

How should we install for the 5600 if we can't use the NAND tools (the SL6000 image recognizes my 5600, but errors/hangs on installation)? What can I use besides the Guylhem ROM to resize? Or has anyone gotten the Guylhem ROM to work on the 5600 (trying it will require buying a larger CF Card, so I would like to know if it can/should work first)? I currently have the OZ/GPE Image.
Thanks for your help!

Hello,
Just wanted to report that I got kismet to work with both my Ambicom WL1100-CF and Linksys WCF12 using RC10 on my C1000. A nice side effect of the really dirty hack I used to accomplish this is that my Z can now also read CF memory cards, yea! That was totally unexpected. This is a really nasty way to get stuff to work but I think I can live with it untill the pdaxrom developers fix those two things. I used the kernel, kernel modules, /etc/wlan, and /etc/pcmcia from the original Sharp rom. To save anyone else the trouble of nand restoring to get these I've put everything you'll need (aside from the kernel and updater), in the file attached to this post. Anyhow, here's how I did it if anyone else is interested. Please make a nand backup before trying this as I can't guarantee it'll work.
1. Download the file attached to this post, rename it with a .tgz extention, and put it in / on your Z. Would one of the mods mind changing the attached file's name? I was unable to upload it as a .tgz
2. Install wlan-ng from the feed.
3. Download the original (normal) kernel and updater.sh from Tetsu's site http://tetsu.homelinux.org/zaurus/kernel/index.html (http://tetsu.homelinux.org/zaurus/kernel/index.html) and put them on a cf or sd card.
The special kernel might also work, but I haven't tried it yet.
4. Flash the kernel
DO NOT put your wireless card in your Z yet because there's a good chance it will freeze.
5. After you reboot, log in and startx because the scrolling outside X is broken when using the sharp kernel.
6. /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia stop
/etc/rc.d/init.d/wlan stop
rm -r /lib/modules /etc/wlan
mv /etc/pcmcia /etc/pcmcia.pdax
8. Untar the file attached to this post in the / directory. This will create /etc/wlan, /etc/pcmcia.sharp, /lib/modules, and /lib/modules.rom directories as well as place a modules.conf in /etc and a script called switchpcmcia in /sbin.
9. ln -s /etc/pcmcia.pdax /etc/pcmcia
/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
At this point you "should" be able to insert your wireless card and connect to your network as usual. If not something's wrong.
10. Edit your kismet.conf file and set the source to use wlanng and wlan0 as the device. I used the latest version of kismet from the ipk on www.kismetwireless.net but the kismet from the feed should work just the same.
11. When you want to use kismet run "pcmciaswitch sharp" this will shut down pcmcia and relink /etc/pcmcia to /etc/pcmcia.sharp and restart pcmcia and start wlan. It takes a few moments. You will see some errors from wlan, ignore them. I think it may be because the version of wlan in pdaxrom is different than the version in the sharp rom but I don't know, it's not really important. When the script is done you should be able to start up kismet and it will see access points. You will also be able to eject your wifi card and use cf memory cards.
12. When you've had enough fun with kismet and actually want to connect to an access point run "pcmciaswitch pdax" it will stop wlan and pcmcia, put back the /etc/pcmcia link and restart pcmcia. you will then have to
"cardctl scheme yourschemename". This seldom seems to work for me though and I end up having to switch schemes using the lan&wifi app.(Anyone know why that is?)
13. Two more things.
The sharp kernel breaks the alt key (which is really useful in moving around large windows), so you'll have to add the line "keycode 77 = Alt_L" to your /etc/X11/kb/akita.xmodmap and then run
"xmodmap /etc/X11/kb/akita.xmodmap"
The sharp kernel also makes it impossable to get out of X, it locks up if you exit. But hey, who needs to leave X
From what I can tell everything else seems to work.
I know this is a really dirty way to get this to work, but I REALLY need kismet and being able to use the CF memory card is nice as well. I hope my instructions are easy enough to follow. Let me know if any of you try this and have problems.

Anyone can help me on config Kismet for SL6000 running RC10...when i enable prism module kismet say " no card found"...any helps ???

Hi Laze, Hi all :-)
... any updates of pdaXrom or feeds in near future?
... because I want to make some experiments with kdepim/sync, gpsdrive and wlan ... maybe don't want to reflash if there's something new on pdaXrom ...
... is there any chance to rsync feed directory on this temporary rc10 server (your post this thread at beginning)?
Thanks for all the good work

Any news about sl6000 upgrades too ?
The most important solutions is suspend / resume .....

Hi Laze, Hi pdaxrom developers,
... I think that I not the only one waiting for some updates or notices about "what's going on pdaxrom releases / homepage" :-)
thanks for all the great work

- Installed RC10 for Akita over the weekend, because attempting to upgrade the kernel whacked the whole system, anyway. Nothing to lose! (wink)
- First impression: WOWZERS!! This thing is visually very impressive, with a nice base bundle like the memory/cpu applet, battery meter that shows percentage, and other utilities. Sweet!
- The controls are way tiny, but the "mouse" cursor follows the stylus around, making it much, much simpler to use those tiny controls. It's daunting at first, but one quickly becomes very used to it. Nicely done!
- The available app set looks great.
- BUT: The unit suspended (presumably for inactivity), and when I powered back up, the UI was utterly unresponsive. The little cursor moved around, but nobody was listening. Finally did a reset to get it back.
- A number of the dialogs run off the screen, and there's nothing that can be done about it. They can be moved around if the title bar is visible, but the controls that run off the bottom are simply not available. One dialog (don't recall which) was so large the title bar was well off the screen, so I couldn't even dismiss it. Cancel/Ok had no effect ... I finally got it to go away, but I don't recall how. I just tried things until it worked. (wry grin)
- It appears to use lots of power. My meter when from 100% to 85% in about thirty minutes, which is pretty stiff usage. If the battery was only 85% to start with (a possibility, then it seems the battery meter shouldn't showed 100% to start with. (shrug)
- After thirty minutes it crashed again.
- Final analysis: A for effort but far too unstable. Recovered my virgin NAND backup and re-installed all my stuff lost in the kernel snafu. Not a happy flashing weekend. (sniffle)

Try solutions from this topic, maybe one of it helps you: Zaurus Ui Freezes If Suspended Too Long (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=10804)
My C860 is quite stable with the RC10; I had those kind of freezes, but they are gone. I think pdaXrom for Akita isn't mature yet, so keep trying; if nobody uses it, it won't be better.

You can move big app windows while holding down Alt (Address button, by default) and dragging the application anywhere.
This is about the 10th time I tell this on the forum, it's time to make a FAQ...
[...]
Without larger Akita userbase the release won't get stable, so I think anybody who thinks like "OMG, I like it, but unstable, I wait until it gets better" should think about using the rom for development reasons.

I find that it does have a higher power consumption than the Sharp ROM, but I ahve not had it out and out crash on me.
Did have my 1 GB SanDisk SD card die over the weekend (need to make a trip to Costco to exchange it, less than a month old).
XMMS is a little flakey (takes for ever to start playing an MP3), but mplayer works well.
Haven't been able to get either of my CF memory cards to work either (Lexar 256 MB and IBM 1 GB MicroDrive).

I already killed 2 1Gb Sandisk SD cards. (in two months)
The last one I exchanged for a Sandisk 1Gb Ultra SD, I've been using this one for 6 months now, without any problems. I tried to use the 2Gb Ultra, but my C860 doesn't seem to recognize it.
Does anyone know whether this is hardware or software related ?

Using my 512 MB Ultra II right now. Have been looking for a Ultra II 1 GB, far and few between up here in the "Great White North"

this has got to be the sweetest ROM for the Zaurus SL-C1000, period. Mix in a little ROX & ICEWM with multiple themes and VNC to my Mac so I can remote control itunes and I'm in heaven. So far everything has worked with this ROM and all the tips in this forum has helped a total newbie like myself to customize my C1000 till my hearts content. Kudos to you all for creating a beautiful package and keep up the wonderfull work you guys are doing. Top notch!

Hi, I just installed RC10 Akita on my C1000 and I have come to this several bugs:
- I don't know why but each time the zaurus suspend the clock settings I have goes wrong when I return from suspend mode,
- I don't know if it's normal but I can't go into portrait mode
- I didn't manage to make my usblan to work I've got one with the Rtl8150 chip, the device lights are on which I suppose is a good thing but I can't ping to my router.
I've entered all the good settings in usb and in lan & wifi in system tools
apart from that it's working great, thanks for this release, so far it beats (for me) the sharp rom or OZ in terms of look, feeling and overall working apps.

Hi, I just installed RC10 Akita on my C1000 and I have come to this several bugs:
- I don't know why but each time the zaurus suspend the clock settings I have goes wrong when I return from suspend mode,
This is a problem related to the hardware clock not getting synchronised with the system clock during a suspend (or in fact ever) and also affects OpenZaurus (which I've just switched back from again ).
My solution was simply to set the hardware clock to the correct time with:
# hwclock --systohc
however if you are using an ntp source then this needs to be done before every suspend to keep the clock accurate.
- I don't know if it's normal but I can't go into portrait mode
I had this problem initially, but then it went away - not sure what I did.
- I didn't manage to make my usblan to work I've got one with the Rtl8150 chip, the device lights are on which I suppose is a good thing but I can't ping to my router.
I've entered all the good settings in usb and in lan & wifi in system tools
I couldn't get the USB to operate in anything apart from host mode when I last used pdaXrom, which was one of the reasons I gave OpenZaurus another go.
If someone has a fix for this I'd like to hear it!

???Ah ok, I don't think it's the same problem.
I want to use usb host to plug a usb-ethernet device, I don't want to use the usb-pc connection to act as a bridge.
For your problem, did you try to desactivate the usb host module (as in OZ 3.5.3 perhaps usb_ohci_pxa270)?

You can modify /usr/bin/apm to set the hardware clock before each suspend. It also fixes the problem where Matchbox/Openbox can freeze after resuming due to the time shift. Thanks, JAm13's solution worked perfectly and as he said my portrait mode problem solved itself after a while so the only remaining problem is to connect my zaurus to the net via my usb-ethernet adaptater.
I installed the driver for it but now I don't what I should do now to make it work.
Also I tried to compile the flac plug-in for Xmms on my Fedora core 4, but it won't compile it if I don't have xmms installed. So I tried to compile Xmms and it said that I don't have Glib installed but I have the glib 2.0 installed I just don't have the glib-config file. Any ideas?
The flac encoder and decoder compiled well but the plug-in just won't compile.

Yes, I had exactly the same problem until I overclocked the processor to 471MHz (values 2, 2, 4) in the overclock GUI. This info could be easily found searching OESF:
