I agree PGAS... and I like it!  Nothing like having something, and not wanting the newer stuff (as it's not much better)..

I would like usb host though........     What's the point of 128MB Flash?

Oh!  You can put the whole OS on the FLASH, and thus you don't have the slow microdrive startup performance that bugs people with a c3000... that was a smart move by Sharp.

It looks like the biggest feature is that it includes a bunch of software that used to be sold separately.

I wonder if this is the surprise that TRISoft was talking about appearing in 17 days?

But only by extra CF_Cards
On the second page of the sharp-link (http://www.sharp.co.jp/corporate/news/050607-a-2.html) they show the "Period of use" with a CF-WLan-Card!
I think the only changes are more Flash and more japanese software.

C3100 upgraded to Flash128MB(C3000 flash16MB).

well, it's a pleasant surprise, but not overwhelming... I'd rather they upgraded the RAM than the flash, to be honest, if that's all they were going to do, as more RAM would make a big difference to performance for some hungry applications.

and they missed the opportunity to upgrade the internal drive to a 5GB, which would have been trivial.

sigh.

my 860 is safe, and will remain mine... until a "3200" or something comes out with at least one wireless option.

bummer, no built-in wifi... I was really hoping for that

I think I'll keep my 1000... the 4gb microdrive would be nice (especially with the 128mb flash), but I'm still worried about having moving parts in a handheld.

Sharp seems to be going in smaller upgrade increments with each iteration of the Zaurus releases now.

So essentially this seems to only a move from 16MB Flash to 128 MB Flash and White cover to Black cover.  The sofware additions of course dont count much for US and Europe imports.

Well I am content with my C1000.

I have a 4GB microdrive plugged into my C760... I've used it for more than a year, and have dropped it more times than I'd like to admit, and have yet to have a problem with it.

If, like me, you're paranoid about losing data, you can always do like I do... keep a backup of all the important stuff on a RAID array, and use something like unison to keep it in sync.

cool, so with the C3000 & C3100 you can use the USB host function to have a USB-IDE adaptor, and then carry round a small double disk pack with RAIDed disks!

doesn't this make the Z a little bit big?

It certainly looks cooler (I've always liked black for electronics).  And more flash memory is good.  But I think I'll stick with my plan to purchase a C1000...and maybe one of those wierd Magpie PDA's as a side dish...

I mean it IS COOL...but it's not THAT cool...

I love it!!!
It really looks great!
I had a doubt about to buy a C3000, but now I really want a C31000, Why?
1 - the upgrade of the flash memory that is very important (I think).
2 - the upgrade of the Core (linux), how everybody know when a product is released always there are few bugs to fix.
3 - the color (yes! god bless the vanity), black cover is really pretty.

I had the hope to see a product that could be a combination between C3000 y C1000, and it comes true.
Yes, us of all want to see a Zaurus with wireless skills but, It is really dificult, because business is business and Sharp have a great market with the CF Cards (Wi-Fi or BlueTooth or whatever).
But It could be good because in a future we could see a CF Card with VoIP
What do you think?
The only thing that I need to know is Which is the price of this baby?
And by the way, anybody knows a japanese friend to get one?

Best regards, this is a good day to work.

And I guess you can now add a internal bluetooth to it since the OS is on the flash and put the Microdrive in the CF slot?

Yeah except it's more RAM we want. Whatever. I don't get why you'd need any more flash. It's good policy though, because they can maintain a very similar software stack for the C-1000 and this.

Right now VoIP on the Zaurus is a software problem, not a hardware. Sharp isn't capable of producing utility software, let alone a decent softphone.

A few things I like about this one:

1. Internal flash is 128 Mb. This means the whole ROM can be stored on it, microdrive can be removed and a bluetooth or maybe even a wifi card can be plugged in instead.

2. It looks even nicer - it's more black than C1000

The thing I don't like is the price - due to the microdrive AND internal flash it will be most expensive Zaurus we've ever seen

Yup, Sharp are crap at s/w, but q. good at hardware. Why Sharp can't do full disclosure, and even fund OE project, I don't know? They'd only need to loan a few Zs, sign some NDAs, and pay a fraction of their dev budget, as they'd get all their testing for free, and development q. cheap!

SIP for zaurus is catered for by KP/pi; it's not too bad, works for me, even over bluetooth network - I can login to employe's voip system with it.

Skype for Z, well, QT/arm/linux is now vaguely coming.

Anyway, this is the wrong thread to discuss telephony.

well conics has got it up with an initial price.  After streamline gets it, I think c1000 might still be the better value.  I do wonder if this opens up the door for people putting internal wifi/bluetooth cards inside.  That might be worth it.

Full disclosure of specs would have helped Sharp tremendously, but they cannot let 3 parties develop the whole platform. Someone has to do the boring stuff, and provide an environment that's stable enough to let the tinkerers tinker.
OESF has nothing to do with software development, it's more oriented towards the fostering of a community around mobile devices and open architectures.
The signing of NDA's is really something open-source coders will tend to avoid, to prevent them from being limited in what they can do in the future, and because once you have the software source, whatever spec was used to develop it is easy to reverse-engineer. The Nokia way of going at it is much smarter: provide *good* functionality for whatever the device is supposed to do, and make it open so 3rd parties can take care of the long tail.
Of course, maemo on the one pre-eminent liunx PDA is probably not something Trolltech would be happy about.

It's also a totally closed architecture. And it's unlikely they'll open it any time soon: they want to sell the middleware.

In C1000 there is no connector to place microdrive and no controller to internal CF bus. Of course you can buy controller and connector and solder both by hand, (because board is same) but I wouldnt do it on my Z personally.

As one guy around here mentioned before, it would be nice to get a brand new Z with all the modern and quite useful things - 624 MHz PXA270 CPU, 2700G video accelerator and 128 Mbytes of RAM as well as NAND. Most of those features are already present in high-end Windows mobile handhelds, like Dell Axim X50v. I'm unable to understand why Sharp doesn't want to put them all into new Zaurii. To my mind, I need only few things that my C760 doesn't do too fast: 1) Smooth midi playback via Timidity; 2) Smooth DivX playback of CD titles without having to recompress them; 3) Swift WWW surfing via Firefox; 4) Performance of slow 386 ar at least 286 when playing PC games via DOSbox (with SB sound, of course).

I'd like to buy 3100, if I wasn't afraid of some things: 1) Limited performance of 416 MHz PXA270, especially when executing video output; 2) Extended size and weight of 3k series; 3) Very unserious and inconvenient 5-way joystick instead of good ol' T-reversed cursor keys (I've got really used to it ).

RAM limitation, of course, stays here as well. And programs like multiple-windowed Firefox are still crashing at 64 Mb space...

The next Cxxx I would consider buying would need much more than just a better colour. It would need to have a much faster CPU than the current  4xxMhz and of course more memory, say 128MB at least, preferably 256MB. Also a faster and bigger harddisk would be needed. This 4 GB microdrive is bloody slow. The 8 GB CF SANdisk would be better. Also, I want build in bluetooth capabilities, a viable VGA out solution! and faster USB 2.0 host. The current support for Wifi cards is fine with me cause wifi is a power sucker so being able to remove it and conserve power is fine by me and its quite handy on the plane (you can just pull out the wifi card). Maybe 2 SD slots instead of 1  and 800x600 res would be good too.

I know why IMHO SHARP don't use anything better and not adding new features. They just dont want to touch anything generally in the hardware of Cxxx series so they do only do improovment such to not touch basic motherboard and construction. I think they will publish absolutelly new model redesigned to Christmas market. And then will try to patch that model next 2-3 years. They are just too lazy to redesign whole unit from scratch now. But what I don't really understand is their policy NOT to sell it worldwide. Maybe they don't have support or production capacity, but I really dont understant it.

Yep, to dangerous ;-)
Will simply ask my local reseller to order me a 3100 without the drive (to put a CF in instead) - if the hard disk would be faster than CF (and i mean not only a bit) it would have more reason to exist...lets see if enough people do so to actually have Sharp recognizing it.

More RAM and faster CPU would just be nice to have, but battery life is also important to keep high.
