Title: Once You Have Changed To Another Rom
Post by: donnatn on July 08, 2006, 03:43:16 pm
I just got my Zaurus a month ago and have never really updated a ROM before.  I have decided that pdaXrom is what I want.

Can someone tell me what the issues are when going from qtopia to pdaXrom?

If I do that, can I go back if I want to?

Just worried that I will screw it up.

Please tell me if I should be careful about anything.  I would hate to kill it.

Thanks!

Donna

I can understand your nervousness - there's a lot of info to try and digest (I've had my Z a few weeks).

As in most cases when upgrading something it's best to do a backup first (in this case a NAND backup).  Then if something goes horribly wrong you can revert back.  So you'll need a SD/CF big enough (C1000/3200 is ~130MB) to hold the backup.

A word of warning about pdaXrom; if you're going to try Beta 4, then it uses a new bootloader (u-boot) which if as you're new to all of this, is IMHO a pain in the arse for newbies like ourselves if you want to revert to another ROM or version of pdaXrom (just my opinion   ).  I would suggest Beta 3 or Beta 1, however I've gone off of pdaXrom, so I shouldn't make your mind up for you   .

Hope that helps, let me know if you need more info...

It also needs to be under 1GB in size.

I agree, don't try beta4. Its not beta quality yet.

I am using beta1. It has its quirks, for example suspend/resume can be problematic. I also find that if I reboot without first deleting /etc/mtab, it doesn't see any of the applications installed to my ext3 formatted sd card.

In general use, though, I find it very stable.

My advice would be to take a NAND backup and try all the other distributions. Each has their good and bad points. I don't think any of them covers all the bases. Its a question of finding one that does enough to make you stick with it.

And communicate the bad points you find back to the developers (which might mean leaving the safe ground of this forum and sending a mail...) so they can work on improving user stuff. Saying fooROM or barzaurus sucks without motivation isn't helping anybody (well, it's helping the developers to dislike you).

Good point.

Don't think anyone's doing that in this thread. I'm not anyway, and apologies if it came across like that. I think its fair, in this case, to point out that the latest version isn't as stable as the recent previous versions. After all, if beta4 of pdaxrom were to be used by anyone for evaluation purposes, they would get an inaccurate impression of how good pdaxrom is.

I want a ROM that can run OpenSSH because all of the servers that I admin run it.  I saw on the distro list that Open Zaurus and pdaXrom support it.   I also looked at the PIM stuff and it looked like it had more features than the Qtopia out of the box apps.

I am going to make a go of it.  I wonder if putty could run on it?

Anyone know of an all inclusive list of steps to follow when changing ROMS?

    Still Nervous        is me

Thanks for the advice.

Does changing the ROM effect synching?  I tried to synch my Z with my desktop and got nowhere with it.  I did get the drivers where I could use the USP and Samba to move files back and forth but I couldn't get the synch software to work.

I downloaded the version that Sharp created for the SL-5500 in english.  Couldn't get it to work.

If I install pdaXrom, will there be any synching software with it?

Thanks

afaik, there are openssh packages for all the various zaurus roms/distros
the same with the PIM stuff. ko/pi runs on all the various distros as well including cacko/sharp rom.

there is an old build of putty 0.55 available for pdaXrom as well. I build 0.58 for X/Qt but I can rebuild it for pdaXrom as well (well maybe)

also, i want to echo the previous good advice of trying beta1 instead of beta4. beta3 is  a bug fix of beta1 so you can mix and match packages from beta1 and beta3 without problems.
