Title: Biggest Reason Why Zaurus Gets Bricked?
Post by: Cyberdoc1971 on October 27, 2006, 06:04:41 pm
Lately I have been seeing more and more Z's getting bricked or crash. I have had my C3100 using the Cacko 1.23 ROM for the past few months, and crashed only once due to taking too many apps off at one time. Thanks to some of the forums, I was able to get it back up in no time. I'm wondering if certian Z models are more prone to bricking and crashing, or if it is a ROM or software issue?

If you are still using your Z... it hasn't ever been bricked... When you brick a device it becomes a paper weight... aka Brick... useless... un-repairable by easy means...

Mines has crashed only during experiments and I know what causes them.  I fix the problem and no more crashes.  Never been bricked.....hmmm  6 times on the sl-5500.

Actually, it locked up where it would not do anything, even with a hard boot. I had to re-flash the ROM and start from scratch. Luckily I had my contacts and appointments backed up, so I didn't lose much. If anything it was a learning experience.

Or better yet, which apps cause the worst crashes? I have tried a number of bad apps where it has locked my Z at the worst times. I've always hated trial & error, because you're not sure what you will get.

this is why I have two identical Zauri, one for trial (& error) and one for stable work. This has saved me from many problems.

Another strategy (which I also have) is to always create a NAND backup before any critical software installation. That way it is always possible to revert to a stable state.

does anyone use tripwire and other tools to monitor file changes on their Z, especially to look for critical file changes?

BTW, here's a simple virus checker I wrote for the Z... since there are none, it's a really simple program

#!bin/sh

echo "Scanning for all known viruses"
sleep 10
echo "none found"

Only collie (SL-5000/5500) can be bricked. Other models contain diagnostics menu which can not be overwritten by users. So in worst situation you have to charge Zaurus, run diagnostics and restore NAND Backup.

And even a dead collie can be recovered with
writing a new bootloader via JTAG.

And JTAG schematic is available on my website: http://www.hrw.one.pl/2006/08/09/sharp-zaurus-jtag-cable/ (http://www.hrw.one.pl/2006/08/09/sharp-zaurus-jtag-cable/)

Are there many viruses out there for the Z? I know nothing is perfect, even the Z comes close to perfection, but I have not heard of PDA's getting a virus.

I'll probably be murdered for saying this... but I have to speak out. I can't hold it anymore.
The worst viruses of all time are for the Zaurus!
They will destroy your Zaurus, cause you, "the human", to spontaneously-combust , cause your house to disappear (leaving an empty lot), and remove all memory of you from everyone in your life.
They are that serious and that deadly!

Sorry I just worked a 12 hour shift and can't take anything serious.
I'm sure there are vulnerabilities in applications that have not been upgraded, but I've never hear of a virus.

LOL, very funny   , I think we all would feel that way if it did happen. I asked because I heard of a few number of yaers ago with some of the Windows Mobile and Palm OS PDA's, Which I have seen antivirus for them.

the winCE, palm and symbian viruses are pretty poor as these things go, I think the only one ever seen was a symbian one, and it was really a trojan.

there's an irony that because the Z has much better connectivity options (a full protocol stack for wifi, bluetooth, irda etc), that it'd be a better vector for viruses than the others; however, it's unusual for any PDA to be directly connected to the internet, perhaps the only people who ever would be zaurus users using a CF ethernet plugged into, say, a cable modem and getting a real IP address with unfiltered internet connection; most of us are using natted gateways which provide some protection.

Thanks for the info, it does make me nervous when I do get a hot spot to get my mail. At least at home my router has a firewall when I surf and watch TV at the same tiime, LOL.
