Can anyone recommend an inexpensive USB LAN adapter that will work with pdaXrom/ii13? I want one that is supported in both the 2.4 and 2.6 versions. Smarter folks that I have tried to get the driver for my DM9601-based adapter working with no luck. I thought with the manufacturer providing linux drivers it would be easier, but obviously not. I would like to get a working USB LAN adapter before my next trip. Thanks.

USB dongles with pegasus and rtl8150 based chipsets will generally work since those two drivers are included out of the box...
This means, most cheap USB dongles made in Taiwan will work, but the more expensive ones won't...
-
Thanks. Most of the listings don't specify the chipset. I will look though. If anyone has a link to an eBay or other listing for a known good one, please share.

I got mine (see my sig) from geeks: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HE-130R&cat=NET (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HE-130R&cat=NET)
geeks often has grey market products from Taiwan and usually use generic chipset, which make them Linux friendly.
Edit: btw, I got mine for $8 + S/H (but i placed a tall order with a total about $150 to offset the shipping charge).

But ...
USB NIC which uses Davicom DM9601 chipset is the cheapest that I've ever seen...
It costs me only 20 RMB (about 2.6 USD)...
I would not stop trying to build driver for it ...

Yes, all the cheap ones I am finding have that chipset which is what I already have. I appreciate Meanies compiling and wellswangs continuing to work on the driver, but for a $10 (1.99 +delivery) I can't wait forever to get a working NIC.
-
but my rtl8150.o USB LAN can not work in the pdaxrom Beta1 in Tosa, the kernel is 2.4.18.
but i don't know how to compile the driver of it.
wellswang help me a lot .anyway,i won't give up to make it work in my Tosa.
Rtl8150 is so easy to use in my sl-c3100. in the original rom and the pdaxrom any version

Thanks to Merli for compiling the driver, and add "WK-668 USB NIC" support to the driver

Is the 9601 driver completely working now? If so, other than installing the ipk is there anything else needed to get it working? Thanks.

Is that link to the exact adapter you have? Does it work "out-of-the-box," or with little work?
Thanks.

I'm also very curious about this. Any posting specifying what works, with the steps involved, will be much appreciated.

steps:
copy driver to usb folder in depmod
run depmod -a
put usb lan in
set ip address through ifconfig

Okay, it finally arrived. The large chip inside says "Zt CKN 0635". Does this make it one of the above, or something else? The only possible clue on the box is "Uses 93C46 to store resource configuration, ID parameter, etc."
I'd plug it in and see if it worked with one driver or the other, but I didn't think through that I'd need an adapter for this adapter, since of course it's a standard rather than mini USB plug on it.

I got a usb lan adapter from geeks.com, but I don't know what chipset it uses, and being the n00b I am in this area, have no idea how to figure it out or get it working. Could somebody help?
EDIT: Found that it uses the dm9601 chipset and I downloaded the driver, bu can't get it to work (it was compiled for 2.4.x, and I have a 2.6.x kernel). Any tips?
Thanks!

downgrade your distro to beta3 or pdaXii13 , or wait for rxxx to become stable and eventually, more modules/drivers will be added...

Meanie, you mentioned this in another thread. Is the 9601 driver in the latest pdaXii13? Thanks.

Oh, I guess at http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/beta3/custom/ (http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/beta3/custom/) - was stumbling around in dead links for awhile, but Google is our friend....
But ...
# insmod ./dm9601.o
./dm9601.o: ./dm9601.o: unresolved symbol crc32_le
Does this mean I don't have the right 2.4.20 kernel, or that there's some other module I need to load first? (My install is Kathryn.)

"Kathrin" covers many versions. Check theoutput of 'uname -r.' That should tell you if you have the right kernel.

I phrased the question ambiguously. I know I have a 2.4.20 kernel. The question is whether it's the right 2.4.20 kernel - whether the symbol that isn't being found by the module is some option that needed to be compiled into the kernel, but wasn't, or whether it's a dependency that could be satisfied by loading another module first. (uname -r just confirms that it's 2.4.20 - doesn't tell which options it was compiled with or Kathrin version it was packaged with.)

Is it possible for you to actually try the dongles in-store? Bring your Z along, plug the dongle in, then run "ifconfig -a" to see whether a network device is created, if so you're in luck, if not check "dmesg" to see what chipset the dongle uses.
-
Most places won't let you open the package.
I wanted to open the package of a pelican PSP power adapter to look at the volt/amp output at Best buy, but I was told to purchase it first, open it, then return it if it didn't work.
When I got it home, I was glad it was the same as the one recommended here on the forums.
I found one more dongle, this one may work. I added it to my post above.
Is there a website that identifies the chipsets in these ethernet dongles, or where online can one find such info?

the linksys usb100m should work fine. it is a realtek chip--it even works with sharprom/cacko (using a module meanie compiled, I think)

Thank you, I'll order that one from Tiger Direct if I can't find it at a store near me.
I found the driver, it is included in meanie's "netswitch_0.4_arm.ipk"

Thank you, I decided against getting this anyway. It looks like the 200m model has replaced this one.
I also just checked the regular Zaurus outlets and none of them have any CF Ethernet cards now.
Handheld-linux [Shop] has the same one that I have that doesn't work.
Trisoft doesn't list CF Ethernet cards now. StreamlineCPUs is gone, Conics has the Buffalo card. Dynamism doesn't have CF network cards.
It's getting hard to find things for the Z nowdays.

my 100m works, the connector isn't a problem. It is small, inexpensive and connects my Z to ethernet. However, I'm not prepared to become a sales zealot for a usb lan dongle--get was is easy to acquire, inexpensive, small, and known to work.

# insmod ./dm9601.o
./dm9601.o: ./dm9601.o: unresolved symbol crc32_le
Does this mean I don't have the right 2.4.20 kernel, or that there's some other module I need to load first? (My install is Kathryn.)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=162294\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
No, it means you didn't load it properly. Don't use insmod, use modprobe!
Insmod only loads the modules you specify, but modprobe will also load any dependencies. In this case "modprobe dm9601" would also load crc32.
Now all I need to do is get it to recognise the usb id's of my dongle...

I got this dongle at a local store today. I cannot get it to connect.
Linksys USB200M
It also has "NWC USBv2 100m Linksys" on an attached label.
The lights flash for a second, then go off.
dmesg (last line)
usb.c USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x13b1/0x18) is not claimed by any active driver.
lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 13b1:0018
I also tried a powered hub, but it still gives me the "not claimed by any active driver" message and the lights only flash for a split second, then go off.
How do I know what chipset this uses?
How can I tell if it uses pegasus or rtl8150 based chipset?
-
plug it in to a linux desktop? They usually have more dirvers included, havving more space and all....
-
I don't have a linux desktop available.
I was hoping the number "100m" on the label would make it similar to yours, adf
This uses the ax8817x driver that needs to be backported from 2.4.21 kernel, and also requires backporting the USB stack according to this post.

I got a USB to LAN adapter from Radio Shack today.
It is a Belkin F5D5050 USB 1.1 10/100 Ethernet Adapter.
It uses the pegasus driver.
I connected it to an ethernet port on my Linksys WRT54G router.
I had some difficulty at first getting it to connect, using the LAN and Wifi applet.
Then I rebooted and used the LAN and Wifi applet again, and set it to:
Obtain TCP/IP automatically (DHCP)
Auto-detect DNS
It connected and I checked with ifconfig.
I now have these 3 numbers:
inet addr: 192.168.1.102
Bcast 192.168.1.255
Mask: 255.255.255.0
I used dillo and opened these forums. The page loaded in 3 secs.
Then I used Epiphany and tried weather.com-large-maps (a page I have bookmarked).
This took 15 minutes, and it finally timed out.
I then copied the weather-map address into dillo, and the page loaded in 2 secs, but the map had a message "internal server error"
I guess my new USB LAN dongle is working like it should.
When I first hooked it up, I couldn't get ifconfig to output anything about eth0
But after rebooting and trying again, it worked!
One minor bug, if you can call it a bug. The network config GUI won't disconnect the connection. I have to unplug the dongle.
When I first got home with this new "toy", I plugged it into my Cacko Zaurus, and it has a major problem.
The USB icon comes on the taskbar, but after about 3-5 seconds, Qtopia locks up completely. The only recourse is resetting in the battery compartment.
I guess, I'll have to fiddle with that Zaurus some to get it working. I'll post anything else about this in the Sharp subforum, if necessary.
Edit:
What gave me the idea to use this dongle is this thread from awhile back:

Don't get a Dynamode USB-NIC-1427-100 LAN Dongle as I have had big problems with mine not working on some networks but working on others. I contacted their tech support and they said that they don't support linux. I then sent them a link to their web page for the product which clearly states that linux is support. They just responded saying that the web page is incorrect and needs to be updated.
So it looks like I have to now go to the hassle of finding a replacement. I am waiting to hear back from linksys as to what chipset they use in their USB200M (hopefully it is a rtl8150, but we will see.)

Here is a thread about the Linksys USB200M
I have one and there seems to be a driver for 2.6 kernels, but I'm running pdaxii13, which uses the 2.4 kernel, so I had to purchase a different dongle. (Shown in thread, 2 posts up)
Good luck with the USB200M

NOTE: the attachments in that thread have disappeared, you may find the driver file by googling the filename I posted.
Edit
Is the Linksys USB200M dongle the one pictured in this thread?

If it is, we are talking about the same dongle.

The following is a pic of the Linksys 200M
So there isn't a driver for the 200M for hte 2.4 kernel, I might have to look into R198 or whatever pdaxrom is at, I have the same one and a ZD1215 USB Wifi dongle which I think has 2.6 drivers.
BTW I have a Linksys 200M I've never been able to get to work with Cacko, pdaxii13, it's a V2 of the hardware, and reported vend/prod ID from dmesg upon insertion is 0x13b1/0x18, a quick google and you get a bunch of TiVo forums, but this one (http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=288342) looks promising with a driver for a 2.4.20 kernel, might be worth a try when I get home tonight. Appears it uses the ax8817x chipset not the RealTek one.
