Probably depends what types of games you like
I prefer puzzle games, so my current favourites are: card games (Simple Solitaire Collection), crosswords (Shortyz), and Japanese-type puzzles (Simon Tatham's Puzzle Pack, Thermometers Puzzles). I also enjoy interactive fiction (aka text adventures); they're freely available from many sources, and can be played in e.g. Fabularium. Does anyone have any other recommendations for that sort of game?

SCUMMVM runs a treat for all those old Psygnosis and LucasArts games like Sam & Max, Discworld or Day of the Tentacle.

I run mupen64plus - first on android, now on sailfish. Also, the gameboy (normal, advance, colour) all work. I never configured dosbox correctly for the keyboard, but it worked on android. Retroarch works well, and as mentioned scummvm. The playstation emulator works well also. Most support joystick, connected to the USB port. If you run android, there are a squillion emulators - the gemini is fast so most run well. The playstation or n64 seem to have the best "modern game vs performance" tradeoff.
For non emulated games, my favourite is "Ravensword, shadowlands". It is a skyrim like game which almost makes running android worth it. Check it out on youtube - awesome game.

Manaplus (free and open source MMORG) works fine
