Title: Mozilla Sunbird would be a great calendar to use on pdaX rom
Post by: magi.sys on June 13, 2004, 07:19:05 am
I just found out that the mozilla guys have separated the calendar to a package called Sunbird.  It would be great to use this on the zaurus since it uses the ical calendar format.  Would anyone be brave enough to compile this for us?

Kopi is by far a more mature app.  It\'s got everything you need calender wise.  Also of interest is that Zautrix has just said they are close to Kapi (the address variation) being usable, which is great news.

Aside from the alarm issues (which might be sorted out in the next pdaxrom release, by the sounds of it), the tool rocks.  I can\'t wait to try t kapi as well.

The other pi-sync apps are directed for the Z\'s.  They are a much better fit imo.  If there was a standardisation effort (which I think there should be to solidify the pdaxrom) on a particular suite it she be on these two products that are actively developed directly for the Z. (albeit not for pdaxrom :-(

Chris,

I did some googling and can\'t find any information about Kopi. I am a fan of the Moz team also. While it is great to have Z apps, my goal is also to be able to run the same application on my desktop and keep my information synchronized. Contacts and Calendar are two apps where that is critical.

There is version 1.63a on the pdaxrom.org stable feed.
Is there a newer version kicking about anywhere?

This link www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1987 says the current version is 1.7.x. Looks like a neat application. I may check it out.

I suppose that one works only with QPE based ROMS, not with pdaXrom.

KOPI\'s nice and all but it would be nice to have other options.

I want to stay away from QT/KDE as much as possible.  I\'m thinking of running Firefox and Thunderbird so just thought it would be nice to run Sunbird as well.  The iCal format is very attractive too.

I\'ve tried Kopi and the mozilla based Thunderbird and Firefox on an C860.
The speed of Kopi is reasonable but the Mozilla stuff is so incredibly slow I just don\'t want to use it. Hats off for the pdaXrom community that made it possible to run these moguls but man the slowness .... True its comparing apples and pears but I have little doubt it holds up for kabi and sunbird as well.

For example the first time starting Thunderbird from the menu nothing visible happens for 35 seconds (I timed it). I thought something crashed and forgot to notify the user so I started dillo, browsed a bit and suddenly another window popped up.

In general I found performance of X-based applications significantly lower than the Qt based applications, with a few exceptions like dillo. Or maybe it is my zaurus?....
Don\'t get me wrong, I love pdaXrom. Just wish apps were faster. btw can anyone recommend a good email application, non-mozilla please.
So if a choice needs to be made I vote for the Kopi stuff, not mozilla.

Hmm, I get about 18 seconds for Firefox to open completely on the C860 (with a blank initial page). Find that quite acceptable.

18 seconds! are you serious? no overclocking, standard 400MHz C860, right?
For me it is 35 seconds (same as thunderbird). This is directly after restarting X.
Someone else give a number please...

Now I\'m concerned something is wrong with my C860...
---
Edit: ah yes, the second time I run it it takes 18 seconds...

Still too long for a pda application. All this magnificant hardware and it is an order of magnitude  slower than palm pda.  :?  Personally I think a pda application should be ready in 3 seconds maximum. Anything above is not practical to use. Besides, why on earth does an email application have to be 25MB and take 35 (or even 18 ) seconds to load!?

Some of the Qt apps seem faster because they are \'preloaded\' in RAM. That is, when you switch away or close them they are actually still running. If you use firefox a lot you can just leave it open all the time. I do this with KoPi for example. What I miss most compared to the original ROM is a good quality movie player and a contacts (ie. address book) manager.

Good point doublec. I\'ll get over it and get on with it. Won\'t use any mozilla stuff since I find it absurd one app takes 25% of my memory but all the rest is pretty neat so I\'ll help out with some testing on the unstable feed as zazz requested here: http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...t=4735&start=30 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=4735&start=30)

Doublec: For the addressbook there might be a solution coming RSN. The folks who have created Ko/PI have an
addressbook Ka/PI in trhe pipeline (Sharp ROM alpha version is just out).

While I would say that mozilla is an excellent browser and its newer apps are very good standalones, It hasnt been developed for embedded systems. Mozilla has always had a size issues, and consequenty speed issue too :-)

but, freedom of choice, I would say is the theme here, if more than one person wants it, then there is demand, and things might improve for us.

hello btw :-) this is my first post

What is everyone using as an addressbook now on pdaXrom? KO/PI is nice I am using it for  to and calendering but I have yet to find a decent addressbook..  saw one TK based one (zxpim I think it was) but the links are down and I don't find it on any feeds...

Now that KOrganizer (KO/Pi) has KAaddressbook (KA/Pi) working in tandem and now KMail (KM/Pi) has been added to the functionality, you might want to look at this thread: (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=5385&hl=)

The mail app is brand new and does IMAP but not POP3 yet, but from what I have seen from Zautrix in the last few months, it will not take long!
