Title: 12/12 ROM update
Post by: brouhaha on December 12, 2003, 04:45:20 pm
I just downloaded the 12/12 X11 ROM that\'s hosted by ZUG.  There appears to be a problem with it.

The initrd.bin file will never completely transfers itself to my CF cards (I\'ve tried 3 of them).  The other files aren\'t a problem.

I get about 75% through the transfer, and it just stops.  One time, I got an error saying the file was \"too deep\".  The other times, I just get a \"delayed write failed\" error.

Anybody else having trouble?

I just downloaded the zip to my win2k laptop, and was able to unzip and move the initrd.bin, updater.sh, and tools.tar successfully to my CF (via pcmcia reader).

have you tried downloading it from the cacko site to see if you get the same troubles?

After the 4th download,  it still gave me problems.  Then I compared file sizes on my desktop copy and what made it into the CF card...they matched.  I dunno what the deal is.

Anyway, I just finished flashing.  I followed the instructions on both the ZUG and cacko websites to the letter.

After my 760 rebooted for the \"final\" time, all I\'m getting is a Linux Penguin in the upper left corner with a flashing cursor below it.  Power button doesn\'t work, nor do any of the keys.

Normal?  Do I just wait a long time?

That\'s also what I got upon flashing, and after each reboot... when you say \"wait a long time\", how long are you meaning?  30 sec, 1 min, 5 min?

I think mine boots to the login prompt after about 30 - 45 seconds (haven\'t actually timed it).

I\'ve been waiting about 15 minutes.

The blinking cursor just went away.  I just have the penguin now.

I think there\'s a problem.

Yeah there\'s definately a problem there. I suggest that you try these steps:

Although the C series support flashing by SD cards, CF still appears to be the safest option. Although the ROM itself is about 25 Megs, the FAT16 system sucks up a little for it\'s own use, so I recommend using a 64MB card.

I\'m assuming that to get the files onto the CF card you was transferring them via the USB cable or you downloaded the .tar.gz file directly to your Zaurus and extracted it to the CF card. Although this SHOULD work it could have caused a problem. I suggest either buying a cheap USB CF card reader or finding someone who has one and getting them to transfer the 3 files initrd.bin, tools.tar & updater.sh to the base / root folder of the CF card.

When you\'ve done this connect the AC power supply and choose option 4 and then option CF and then yes.

When the new cacko bootloader comes up when you try to flash it make sure you repartition the system area of the memory to 25 MegaBytes. This is all it needs and gives you a nice 90~ MB /home area

Self explainitory

This is a must and this could have caused your problem, clearing the Flash will give the ROM a new slate to work with.

... and keep your fingers crossed

Thanks.  Just as you were typing that up, I tried another install...and it worked.

Apparantly,  there\'s something wrong with my USB Hub.  Because when I went around it and plugged the memory reader straight into my computer, I had 0 problems transferring that file.

I have a feeling the filesize reporting was wrong earlier when I was having xfer problems.

Now...I accidentally double tapped on the last screen calibration point.  I need to find out how to recalibrate.

Run konsole (or connect via telnet) and remove file /etc/pointercal_tslib like this:

rm /etc/pointercal_tslib

then reboot your Z.

don\'t forget that the cacko.biz site has a great faq area, with many of these questions answered... I\'ve also added all these x11 faqs to the unofficial zaurus faq!

btw - that ROM isn\'t a 12/12 version... it\'s still the 12/8, I was just updating the downloads section, and it took todays date as the upload date.
