GPD - Windows OS / Making Windows usable on the GPD Pocket
« on: October 29, 2019, 06:15:30 am »
A little late - I thought I'd put this up before.

This is really about making Windows less of a pig in general - https://neilstechdocs.blogspot.com/2017/09/gpd-pocket.html

I intend to replicate it on my Chuwi minibook when it arrives.

8100Y with 16GB RAM upgrade. This will give my old XPS 13 a run for its money.

Ordered one - cheap enough that I don't mind hacking around a bit after I get it (my GPD Pocket has an internal USB hub and MicroSD slot now as well as heatsink mods).

It does have a backlit keyboard BTW.

People say my laptop is the size of a phone - so I show them my Unihertz Atom.

GPD Pocket - hardware / GPD Pocket Reviews

I use it for raw processing and overall image corrections so no retouching. To be honest I haven't found trackpoints or capacitative touchscreens really precise enough but a bluetooth mouse works fine. Screen size isn't a problem - after the U810 and Zaurus it's pretty large - mouse wheel zoom makes it pretty quick to get precision when you need it.

Having now gone to the effort on tuning the Windows install with with ThrottleStop, NTLite and Spybot-anti-beacon I am loathe to blow it away to try Ubuntu (would rather have openSuse anyway but Kubuntu is servicable). Am seriously considering getting another one for that! With LibreOffice, RawTherapee, Firefox and NextCloud client running on Windows I have no immediate incentive to switch to Linux...although running some server stuff on the Pocket would be neat if a good hack for more internal storage were to materialise.

Everything seems to be working well and with ThrottleStop setting the package power limit to 2W (with a burst to 5W) rather than the 5W and 15W that it shipped with then I can get 8-10 hours battery life with normal desktop usage (mail, editing office docs, bit of browsing, NextCloud syncing in background). However, 2W is not enough for full HD YouTube playback (3W is fine) - but I can't actually really see the difference between 1080P and 720P on the display at any reasonable viewing distance so I'm not overly bothered.

Wow!  That was hard to watch.  I wanted so bad to Geraldo Rivera him to knock sense back into him.

Geraldo.....that's a good one.....

I have to agree with him on one thing the keyboard looks terrible.

Any keyboard that small is going to have some compromises in the layout/design.

That's one part of the price you pay to have a pocketable computer.....along with a small display.

After my Zaurus SL-C1000 and the Fujitsu U810 it's positively spacious. I don't know what everyone is whinging about!

In my experience, I not seen anyone produce *good* content - code or docs - as fast as they can type, anyway,

December 0.2 is released.

In case you missed it, please check out a screenshot:

Will give it a go, especially since we can now use SDHC on Zaurii!

General Discussion / Larger Sdhc Cards On Sharp Rom

the timeout messages are prompted with the original driver too, at least in cacko 1.23b1 on my c3000.

The point is I'm seeing timeouts for cards that did work with the earlier drivers - but only the cheapies so no great loss.

It does work with Cacko 1.23 provided you have the original SD card driver and not the 4GB SD update.

However, the change to supporting SDHC has had some side effects for me:

It has made the Z much more sensitive to SD card timings - so some cheap SD cards give timeouts (type "dmesg" in Konsole to see the messages)

It seems to expect the SD card to be partitioned since it tries to automount /dev/mmcda1 rather than /dev/mmcda

MMC card support seems to have gone - can't get any of mine to mount

Software / Kde-pim/pi 2.2.9 Available For Sharp Rom
« on: June 11, 2008, 07:18:29 pm »
Most excellent! I am just putting SuSE 10.3 on my U810 as a big sister to my C1K (see the saga unfold at http://neilstechdocs.blogspot.com) - that makes one thing a helluva lot easier. As others have said - keep it up!

It is available for Sharp-Rom and Suse Linux 10.3.

There are no major fixes compared to version 2.2.9 - more or less I just recompiled version 2.2.9 for suse 10.3 and fixed some compilation problems with the C++ compiler.

I've been thinking about doing such a thing with the exact same machine but I was afraid of the battery life and unaware of the CF lifetime. Did you tweak the swap (lkike turning it down) to save your CF or didn't you do anything specific ?

Nothing special for swap - I did use an SLC flash card though, which has about 10x the read/write cycles of MLC flash cards (allegedly). To be honest, I have 12V linear flash cards from 1993 on the Omnibook 300 which are still working fine and I've never encountered a problem with flash failure - maybe I just don't buy cheap enough!

Batteryrefills do a good job for boosting battery life - they warranty their work and you can send them old failed batteries which is what I did. It's not pretty as they have to split open a plastic welded unit and then glue it back toegtehr but it works well (and they don't use Sony exploding cells either). Otherwise, changing from HDD to flash makes less of a difference to battery life than you would think - the processor and backlight are more hungry.

Fujistu Lifebook B-2154 circa 2001

1.4kg, Celeron 450, 192MB and touchscreen configured as follows

1. Ripped the HDD out and replaced with 4GB CF card (Transcend 266x which gives 40MB/s)

2. Had the batteries refilled with newer LiIon cells from batteryrefill.com - takes the life up to 5 hours from 3

3. Installed Windows 98SE (yes!) with IEradicator to remove IE and unofficial SP2.01.
This is remarkably secure and fast, no services running in background, most malware won't run.
Linux does run but not quite as resource efficiently and the touchscreen and BIOS suspend/resume are not quite 100%

4. Install CPUIdle

5. Install OpenOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird and the whole PIM/PI suite

Also have a set of HP Omnibook 800CT's which I use as wireless X-terminals running cut down Slackware off CF cards
The older ones have not quite enough video RAM to do 800x600 16-bit colour (who designed that?) but a bit of X tweaking will get you 800x572

...and an Omnibook 600 for the old DOS/Win 3.1 nostalgia games

...and an Omnibook 300 (spot the theme!) with DOS/Win3.1 in ROM, 9 hours of battery (AA's), Flash drives and 1.3kg - from 1993 and still going strong

excellent results, thanks for posting!

now I just need to wait for someone with a C3x00 to try to find space for an internal BT module and prove it possible, then I'll follow them!
