Thanks for the detailed, yet understandable descriptions of what these things do!

Those sound useful!

A couple questions, since my linux skills are still a bit lacking:

What happens if there's no network connection when the scripts try to set the clock?

You mention that apm is already wrapped (I take it this means that there's a script called apm that runs some commands, and then runs apm)...after installing your stuff, do the things in the previous wrapper still work?

What happens if you don't unmount smbfs shares before you suspend?

What's PS1?  (I'm guessing it's the console that comes up when you first start the rom, before you get into x)

What does .Xdefaults do?

Thanks for your patience!

Please keep us posted on your progress.  It would be nice to be able to run  my Java programs on pdaxrom.  Thanks again!

How about the pocketop IR keyboard?

What can I do to help someone get some working drivers going?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Status Update..
« on: December 10, 2004, 03:39:38 pm »
I havn't had any battery problems since the some of the very early releases.

There is a PDF viewer available for pdaXrom, but it's not as good as the one for the qtopia based roms.  Some docs it reads just fine, others it doesn't read properly, a few just crash it.

General Discussion / Zaurus As A Laptop/desktop
« on: December 09, 2004, 09:40:23 pm »
The problem there is going to be the video.  Last time I looked, the IO Data cf->vga card only output at a few frames a second, so you won't be using it for regular use (it's more designed for slide presentations and such).

I think your best bet would be to just have a small, unobtrusive, cheap old PC under your desk whose only purpose is to run a VNC client.  Then you just run the VNC server on your Z and everything works, without having to worry about driver compatibility and such (All you need is a working network card).

I know, it doesn't have quite the geek factor, but it's still pretty good.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / For Pocketop/all other keyboard users

I have a pockettop keyboard too.  I'm still hoping someone can get it running in pdaXrom.  I don't really have time to fiddle around with it.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Java 1.3 and Swing in pdaxrom 1.1.0 RC5

As I understand it, applications without VFP support will still work under the new rom, they just won't have the speed advantages of stuff compiled for vfp.  Anyone care to confirm this?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Emulation & pdaxrom

Hey Drac,

Thanks for all the hard work on this!

How much of the gens source is ASM?  Which parts of the code is it in?

I'm getting the sinking feeling that we're going to need to do some more significant work than a simple crosscompile to get a good genesis emulator running...

Anyone out there good at translating X86 ASM into ARM/xScale ASM?

Actually, I've got another good idea for getting some help with genesis emulation...stay tuned.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Most important missing/to be fixed in pdaXrom?
« on: October 27, 2004, 01:54:16 pm »
Requests for games, shoutcast, etc are all important, and I want those things too, but they're not things the pdaXrom dev team should be working on.  You guys should be focused on the system as a platform for running apps.  The rest of us should be stepping up to the plate to write apps for the platform (Thanks to the few who have already started on this...maybe over thanksgiving I can get my crosscompiler set up and join you)

The most important thing that I'm missing is support for my external keyboard (pockettop).
However, I'm not sure if that should be a feature of the OS or if it would be better implemented as an application.  If the framework is already in place to allow for external keyboards (IR) and other input devices (USB mice and keyboards for when the RATOC card works), then I think you should not worry about it and let someone else implement the code for specific devices.

The other thing that irks me is the click-and-hold rightclick.  Sometimes it's really nice.  Sometimes it is too troublesome.  Since it sounds like the functionality is implemented as a patch to TSLIB, this probably is something you guys should work on.

A nice little app that lets you turn that functionality on and off (via clicking a taskbar applet or one of the useless keyboard keys) would be a good start. Basically, a cross between how it works now, and how xmonobut worked.  A mode for left click, right click, center click, and leftlick-hold-for-right-click in an app like xmonobut would be ideal to me.

I do think you should work on support for the other zauruses (Even though I don't have one), but I also think that should wait until you've got 1.1.0 finalized.   I imagine the changes involved would justify a major change in version number, not a change from 1.1.0 RC6 to 1.1.0 RC7.  Once we've got 1.1.0 Final out, then we should start discussing other Zauruses.

Another thing that I think should be worked on after 1.1.0 is final is an attempt to get software designed for sharp roms working on pdaXrom.  But I think that supporting other zaurus models (especially the 6000 and the new clamshell) is more important.

Thanks again to the pdaXrom team for giving us such a great platform!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Emulation & pdaxrom
« on: October 22, 2004, 05:05:05 pm »
Ok, if a WinCE machine can do it, we certainly can as well, we just need a bit more work on optimization, etc.

Anyone know which emulators work best on the windows handhelds?

Nothing like good ol' Bucky...I can't wait.

Thanks for working on the crosscompiling, Drac!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Request: Sega Genesis / Megadrive Emu for RC5
« on: October 14, 2004, 03:19:40 pm »
http://www.squish.net/generator/

Is another one we can try, but I don't have any experience with it, so I don't know how it will do with compatibility, run speed, etc.

This one was ported to the ipaq, so it sounds like it's quick enough to run on a handheld.

The maintainer also seems pretty eager to help with porting, and it sounds like porting the console version should be pretty easy.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Request: Sega Genesis / Megadrive Emu for RC5
« on: October 14, 2004, 03:13:39 pm »
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gens/

That's the one we want.  Gens is by far the best emulator for the desktop, and probably the one we should try to get running for the Z.  (We may want to leave out segaCD and 32X support if that's an option during compilation)

I've seen reports of a newer version, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / RC5 Browsers dont like me.

That seemed to fix dillo.  Thanks!

I think the problem starts when you change your browser settings.

Still no luck on minimo, though.
