6000 - Tosa / how do I hard reset the Zaurus sl-6000?
« on: July 14, 2004, 06:33:26 pm »
What is typically referred to as a "hard reset" on Palms/PPC's--that is, to erase all user data and return the device to a factory-fresh state--is called "Format" on the Z.  IF this is what you wish to do, hit the reset button on the back, then hold down the OK button while turning the Z back on.  You will get a menu that includes "Format."

Just another data point, but I have used SanDisk SD cards (both of Chinese manufacture) of 256 and 512 sizes, in both vfat and ext2 formats, in two different Zaurii without difficulty.

lwong, nice writeup of this cool new Z add-on!

B.) Which is the \"latest version\"?  I ask b/c I know there is a \"v1.4\" (and even, I think, flavours \"a\" and \"b\") out there, and every new Special Kernel comes with nebulous qualifying remarks to the effect \"I think I compiled this with Wireless Extensions, but who knows?\"  I had fine performance with SK v1.3 on my 5600, and I can vouch for wireless extensions being enabled.

D) I think there\'s a counter on the forum index for \"Views\" next to \"Replies.\"

This is probably not what you want to hear, but I experienced something similar with two Symbol WiFi cards that both turned out to be fried.

Adhesive ones could leave residue, but I\'ve never experienced it.  The \"tuck-under\" kind (G2, NuShield) couldn\'t possibly leave residue.

I\'d say they\'re mandatory if you use HWR and want more than six months from new-in-box to wastebasket.  If not, it depends on how paranoid you are, but I prefer to have a tough, replaceable layer between the most vulnerable part of my mobile device and the outside world.

6000 - Tosa / Bluez dialup networking and IRK
« on: June 02, 2004, 08:16:41 pm »
I recently discovered that using the IRDA hack to setup Bluetooth dial-up networking (as described in the ZUG Wiki) renders IRK unusable when the BT DUN connection is active. I guess I shouldn\'t be surprised (I\'m sure the IRDA port is locked by the QTopia networking subsystem, even though the hacked /etc/ppp/peer file resuts in ppp connecting via an rfcomm port), but I was disappointed.

I am therefore happy to report that applying the same hack to a connection configured as \"Dialup\" solves this problem.  (I have no idea what the default port for this type of connection is.)  The connection is always available from the network applet (with the Socket 2.5 card, a BT-DUN connection is never available via the network applet), and having the connection active doesn\'t interfere with IRK!

Is there any difference?

Probably not; Sharp\'s supplied kernel on my 5600 (PXA 255 version) even had the cache workaround enabled.

The translations come as zips, and when you unzip them, you will get a (fairly complicated) directory tree with files in two places.  The first will be a .conf file that will be in ~/mods.d/, and the actual text files will be in ~/modules/texts/[raw|z]texts/[translation name]/.  My translations are in /mnt/card/usr/share/sword/...  I would guess that /mnt/cf/usr/share/sword/ would work as well.

How much bulk, and is it self-sufficient in terms of carrying (belt loop/clip)?

\"Content Column\" mode helps a lot, if you can live without the formatting...

Yes, that link works, but the link in that page to the Zaurus files ( http://community.zaurus.com/projects/zroadmap/ ) doesn\'t work.

ZUG mirror site does!
