My impression is that Planet Computer have indeed abandoned the Gemini, for both Android and Linux operating systems.

I bought my Gemini to be a little palmtop computer running Linux and used it happily daily as such until last year. Eventually, however, the lack of any updates has meant that I can no longer use it.

I am not one to upgrade constantly if my system is working but I did eventually have to upgrade (and couldn't) because of external conditions: needed to install a package (davmail) that is not available for the version of Debian Linux Gemini provided.

Thank you for the links. Depressing reading...
In answer to your questions:
  • the headsets (I have 2) are passive
  • the headsets worked just fine on a top end Samsung (the one that got stolen)
Thanks again. I'll use the 3.5mm headset I have, ignoring the noise when not actually in use.

Gemini PDA - General Discussion / USB-C headset not working for phone calls
« on: February 01, 2022, 09:22:32 am »
Hello all,

TL;DR: none of my USB-C headsets can be used for phone calls while the 3.5mm audio headsets work just fine. Can I use USB-C headsets for calls?

I have searched the forum to no avail. Sorry if I missed an obvious post somewhere.

Longer story: when I bought my Gemini back in the dim and distant past, I installed Linux and never tried the Android OS. However, my main phone has been stolen and I needed something to replace it. So I've started using the Gemini as my phone now and this meant using Android. I've managed to get everything set up to my satisfaction (after a bit of a techno-shock moving from Android v12 back to v8...) except for phone calls. Although 3.5mm audio headsets work, they have the noise issue which I find quite annoying. The USB-C headsets do not have this problem but I cannot use them during calls.

Otherwise, I'm actually quite happy with the Gemini as my phone although I miss Linux...

Thanks for listening!

Also, is there a way to use i3wm instead of lxqt ? sddm seems not to recognise i3, but if I switch to lightdm, i can login to i3 session...
The login screen does allow the choice of different window managers or desktop environments. It looks in /usr/share/xsessions for those choices. You can create your own in that directory for i3. For instance, I have this on my desktop computer in a file called i3.desktop in that directory:
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Name=i3
Comment=improved dynamic tiling window manager
Exec=i3
TryExec=i3
Type=Application
X-LightDM-DesktopName=i3
DesktopNames=i3
Keywords=tiling;wm;windowmanager;window;manager;

* As the Gemini has a non-standard processor, will DEBIAN updates be readily available? Or will it depend on whether the community make a compilable version for the Gemini available?
It's not a non-standard processor. The ARM processor in the Gemini is one of the standard processors supported by Debian, known as arm64.

* Will I be able to install apps like TaskWarrior, easily?  Is there an installer app within DEBIAN?  I'm currently using Brew on a Mac and installing other software is a breeze.
One of the key strengths of Debian is its whole package manager eco-system: apt, dpkg, ... and, yes, taskwarrior is one of the packages available.
Having said this, one of the problems with Debian on the Gemini, as it's not really supported, is that it is not possible (or at least not easy) to upgrade to recent versions of some of the packages due to the Gemini specific packages being stuck at an old version of Debian. So if having recent versions of some software is critical then the Gemini may not be for you. In my case, all the software that I want for portable computing is stable and does what I need. I don't need to be at the bleeding edge for what I do with my Gemini.

Gemini PDA - Linux / F-buttons

On my system, the key bindings (including FN keys) appear to be defined in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/planet_vndr/gemini.
Maybe you need to use xkb to set these?

Thanks! For me this works in firefox but not in terminal
It works in gnome-terminal; which one are you using?
Check
Code: [Select]
readlink /etc/alternatives/x-terminal-emulatormaybe.

Some programs like byobu & htop rely on F buttons.

does anyone have a trick to get F-buttons handy?
On my system, Fn+Shift+N (where N is one of the number keys) gives me FN with F0 being F10 in reality.
This doesn't help for F11 and F12...

is it actually feasible to detect when the screen folds and make a trigger based on this?
that could possible run a custom default of such a script
In principle, it is indeed possible. However, I've been unable to figure this out. Any advice on doing such would be very welcome indeed.

I guess it depends on how long you wish to store it. If it's just until you use it next and that is likely to be in hours (or a day), what I do might work for you. I turn off the radios (bluetooth and wifi), turn off the display with
Code: [Select]
xset dpms force offand then close the lid.
I don't use the default screensaver because I hate having to type in my password. I like living dangerously...

Excellent. Thank you.

Thanks for this. Nice to have it all in one place.
Do you know whether the 4G support requires an up-to-date Android installation? I've not updated the Android side of my Gemini since I bought it almost 2 years ago (only booted into Android once)...

Slightly off-topic but have you considered the Pyra? It's a community driven PDA, fully open (as can be these days: does not include some of the radio component drivers). Not out yet but soon (hopefully).

Thanks.

I am curious: why disable sleep?

If you run lxqt-globalkeys on Xfce startup, all of the configured options will work.
I don't seem to have lxqt-globalkeys. There is /usr/bin/lxqt-globalkeysd (note d at end). Is this what you mean? If so, this has no effect for me with respect to lid actions.
