In a previous video, I noted that Debian didn't support the little computer's WiFi out of the box. That's because I was using the default Debian disk image. Switching to one with non-free drivers resolved the issue.

I also noted that the display wouldn't rotate in Fedora. That's because I was using the default Wayland display server. Switching to Xorg resolves the issue... but it also means that display scaling is set to 100 percent instead of 200 percent, and that makes text and graphics look tiny.

the pictures are, if I understand correctly, renders of 3d models created by someone who examined the engineering drawings in the patents that Microsoft filed.

Gemini PDA - Android / android app for a serial terminal
« on: June 29, 2018, 06:04:13 am »
I was wondering if anyone had a particular recommendation for an android app which will turn my G into a serial console (perhaps with VT100 style emulation, as well as raw serial IO).

I've got an OTG adaptor and a USB serial dongle to test out.

If nobody has such a thing, I'll try this out and update here:

Gemini PDA - Android / partial Adoptable storage
« on: June 24, 2018, 06:49:46 am »
Android 6 and above allow you to turn part of any memory cards into native storage for Android, a process known as adoption. That causes the contents of the adopted file system to be encrypted by the phone, you can't pop the card out and read it in another computer or phone. Android will get upset if you take that storage away!

It is possible to split the memory card so as to have some capacity adopted, and the rest as FAT32 for the traditional "external" legacy storage.

You connect to your phone over ADB to get a list of adoptable capable storage devices like this:

Code: [Select]
$ adb shell sm list-disks adoptable
disk:NNN,MMM

then you decide how much you want to reserve as a percent of the capacity (note that a 64GB card will have only usable 60GB). To set aside 80% of the capacity as legacy:

Code: [Select]
$ adb shell sm partition disk:NNN,MMM mixed 80

You can then go into Settings->Storage and see the separate storage spaces.

If you decide to take the card out to back up the files in the FAT32 space, I recommend you shut down the phone beforehand, and put the card back before starting up.

If you decide to repartition the card, you'll see the "ghosts" of old adopted storage list in the Storage settings and you can remove them.

I don't seem to have any wifi functionality.

I ssh'd in over the usb ether, and I see a wifi device,

Code: [Select]
root@gemini:~# ip ad show dev wlan0
34: wlan0: mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN group default qlen 1000
    link/ether 00:09:34:5a:83:db brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

root@gemini:~# ip link set dev wlan0 up

root@gemini:~# ip ad show dev wlan0
34: wlan0: mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN group default qlen 1000
    link/ether 00:09:34:5a:83:db brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

root@gemini:~# connmanctl enable wifi
Enabled wifi

root@gemini:~# connmanctl scan wifi
Scan completed for wifi

I installed connman-ui but if I run connman-ui-gtk at the command line, nothing happens. There's nothing in the menus that looks useful.

Gemini PDA - Linux / rebooting latest debian firmware with "init 6"
« on: June 23, 2018, 06:16:44 pm »
I was ssh'd in, over USB ethernet emulation mode, and typed in "sudo init 6" to reboot, and nothing happened.... for a long time! screen was blank, didn't respond to ESCape/ON/OFF (but I didn't force it).

after what seemed like forever, probably only 30 to 40 seconds, it did reboot by itself

Gemini PDA - Hardware / speakers out of phase?
« on: June 20, 2018, 06:29:46 am »
i was watching a youtube video and I was enjoying the stereo sound when I realised the sound seemed odd, there was no central stereo image. I think it's because the speakers are mis-wired and thus out of phase.

Just me?

Or is it some sort of audio processing that's meant to give a faux wide field effect?

I'm wondering if there's an audio player for android which allows reversing the phase of one channel so I can do a test to try and prove I am right.

Gemini PDA - Linux / How much space?
« on: June 19, 2018, 02:23:59 am »
Since installing Linux also means reinstalling android and wiping the data partition, I want to choose the right amount of space for Linux so I won't have to do that again.

I have a 64GB memory card, so I can put bulk data on that.
I was thinking of allocating 8GB. I won't be compiling the entire kernel but I will probably need to compile kernel modules, so should I allocate 10 or even 12G?
